During a very snowy week, I was getting a little stir-crazy being locked in the house. My husband and I eventually decided that we should make our way from our house to downtown Fredericksburg to see what was happening. The streets had been plowed and there were plenty of parking spaces so we stopped for a coffee at Hyperion Espresso. What a good decision! The coffee (mocha for me, cappuccino for him) was delightful. I had to try the delicious looking peanut butter cookie and I am glad I did. Yummy! The crowd was enjoyable - mostly students from Mary Washington doing some studying and families out looking for hot cocoa for snow-bound children. Hyperion is an independent coffee place right in the heart of old town Fredericksburg. You take one look, and you WANT to like it. You WANT it to be the perfect little non-corporate Mom & Pop with a personal touch and a unique menu of quasi-original dishes. Sorry, you won't find much of that here. The coffee is fine, the atmosphere, okay. But from the first time I came here (10 years ago?) Hyperion has not invested in a toaster to toast bagels. So if you want a bagel, you will either have it cold or microwaved. That's right; they have bagels, but they do not toast them. I'm quite sure this is the only coffee house I have ever been to that has bagels, but no way to toast them. Their explanation: "we don't have space." That is a strange lie to tell. They have plenty of space. Speaking of use of space: Their upper level seating area like an out-of-business coffee/pastry place, with a fridge, coffe-making equipment and empty pastry cases. I will post a photo, if possible. To add to the lameness, their microwave oven is like an anemic, $49.00 WalMart special like a kid might have in a dorm. Certainly not enough for a busy eatery. When Hyperion steps into the 21st century, they'll get better ratings. BTW, I had a problem at a Starbucks recently, so I complained via their website. withing 24 hours I got an apology and $5.00 credited to my Starbucks card. Starbucks also provides its employess great insurance and educational grants. Starbucks is doing well because they are QUICK to learn from their mistakes and fix things. Great place to grab a cup of coffee. I'm kind of a coffee fanatic so I enjoy checking out new places. I came here on Friday night at about 830. It wasn't busy and I had the interior almost to myself. I ordered a medium Colombian coffee and it was quality good. The staff were very friendly. Two of them had several tattoos and it was enjoyable to discuss their favor artwork. The establishment itself was clean, to include the single restroom. I really liked the plethora of bare wood throughout the interior because it added a nice homey touch. If you're in the area and want a standard drop coffee, I would suggest you head on over. It was worth the drive from Stafford. read more

This use to be one of my favorite coffee shops. I stopped by every morning on the way to work. Last night a couple of my friends stopped by for some coffee. While we were sitting outside one of our friends stopped by with her kids. After about 5 a brunette women that worked there came out, apparently one of the owners, and told them they had to order something or leave. Tried to explain they were just stopping by to chat and she became very rude said something about calling the cops of they weren't going to order coffee. One of the girls began to cry because of how rude she was being. I could understand maybe if it was busy but it was empty, they had only been there for a few minutes, and kids don't need sugar around 8pm either. I was just really surprised at how this women treated people, not to mention acted around children. I guess not everyone in a small town understands how to treat people with respect. The experience is a real bummer because I live the coffee and the people in the morning are super nice. It might not have hit so hard of I hadn't found out she was one of the owners and everyone outside said this was a regular occurrence. read more

I love coffee, and theirs is pretty good. But, I also value customer service. The service I received today was enough to guarantee I won't be back. I was on a tour of Fredericksburg and stopped in for a latte, and everything was fine. I came back later for another coffee (the tour wore me out) and the same barista was ringing me up. She was pleasant, no complaints about her. Then, a woman (possibly a manager) came up and told me I could not have a venti iced americano with no water. Seriously? I just wanted extra ice, and no water. I didn't want anything extra, or difficult. Just no water. She told me no, and that is their policy. Huh? side note: it has been my experience that hot espresso melts the ice just enough. Adding water to it is not necessary for my taste. I asked why, she said that's just their policy...again. So I left, with no coffee. She didn't seem to mind at all. Other side note: I work in the hospitality industry in Fredericksurg and I promise from now on when guests ask where to get a good cup of coffee I will NOT recommend this place. I just didn't want water! Geeze! My suggestion: if you're having a bad day, let someone else interact with customers. One more side note: I just spent over $5 on a latte earlier the same day! Within three days of moving to Fredericksburg, I found and began to frequent Hyperion Espresso. They pulled a good shot, I appreciated the atmosphere, their outdoor benches are fantastic, and I lived about four blocks away, so I ended up spending a good deal of time and money here--probably about $20 a month in both bulk coffee and espresso beverages. I am on my third frequent buyer card since finding out about the program, and while many of their patrons certainly spend more than I, I think I still qualify as a good customer given the regularity of my business. That all changed two evenings ago. After ordering my tall mocha and cinnamon latté, I was told that I owed the shopkeeper $4.08. I had with me the likeness of one Alexander Hamilton, but I lacked coins, for I had forgotten all my metal on my nightstand. I spied a brimming penny bowl by the register and simply asked if--if, mind you--the bowl was for customers, for I simply didn't feel like adding another $.92 of zinc to my collection. In Atlanta, such requests certainly aren't unusual, and, up to this point in my Fredericksburg residence, I had no reason to think Virginia any different. After all, those pennies are supplied by other customers who simply don't want the change. The store has already made that money. Well, well, well: The shopkeeper immediately began to upbraid me for trying to cadge my drink. With a smug smirk and several campy rhetorical pauses, she told me in no uncertain terms that what I had proposed was "cheap, very cheap." Before I repeat that I merely asked if the bowl was for customers, understand that the 8 pennies in question made up less than 2% of the cost of the drink. But no matter. I realize that 8 pennies is stretching the limits of penny-bowl generosity--even though those pennies were presumably all gifts from other patrons--, and a "no" answer would have sufficed. But instead, even as I extended the $10 bill towards her, perfectly content with a "no" answer, I was forced to listen to almost sixty additional seconds of humiliating and repetitious rhetoric, which served no purpose other than to make a scene out of nothing. She repeated the same sentence three times--that I was cheap; that I had no business to ask for the pennies when I had the money; that she would have given them to me were I short the money; and that, well, that I was cheap. I'm not sure how many times I said "okay." At least three--all while proffering my ten-dollar bill. She finally took the money after I informed her that I had been extending currency in her direction for some time. She then shorted me $.10 on my change. In a fit of pique, I informed her that I was short a dime and asked who was really being cheap here, and where she was from. She scoffed and turned back to her work--no apology and "none of your business." The other barista gave me the dime. Am I really in Virginia? What just happened? For the time being, I will insist on giving The Griffin my coffee business, and I encourage others to do the same. Any store comfortable enough to treat a good customer like this needs to be checked. read more

This is a pretty comfy coffee shop with decent coffee and fun latte options. I got the marshmallow latte which was a special for the season and it was very sugary but delicious. I also tried their café au lait which was pretty good. This cafe is centrally located so there is alot of foot traffic which is great if you like people watching while you sip your coffee, not great if you like it quite. The baristas were loudly talking about slightly inappropriate topics but otherwise I enjoyed the whole experience. read more

Super cute space in the heart of super cute Fredericksburg historic old town. There was a nice selection of iced drinks and non-coffee drinks that was good since I had already had 3 cups of coffee and that much caffeine makes me unbearable to be around (if you think I'm loud and hyper already - I'm 10000x times with caffeine). However, I wish that the staff at Hyperion Espresso would pour themselves some of their own brew, because I *swear* all 3 baristas were half asleep, even though there was a long line and it was only 11am on Sunday morning. My husband had to repeat his drink for a venti white chocolate iced latte, and when I asked for a half and half (half iced tea and half fresh squeezed lemonade), I got all iced tea. I asked the barista to please correct my order, and he poured out half of the iced tea and poured in the lemonade - but he never stirred/shook my drink (so all the lemonade was floating on top, and the iced tea at the bottom), nor did he wipe off the side of my cup - which was dripping with iced tea from when he poured it out (so I ended up having tea stains running down the side of my white trench all day long). Was looking for a independent coffee shop to work at while I'm searching for a job since they seem to have the best atmosphere, free wifi, and good beverages. I tried Hyperion since it was the closest to where i live, but once I got there it wasn't as warm and inviting as I had read. There chai latte was ok, drinkable but not one I would come back for. Then there were signs that gave the impression they didn't like people to stay too long. Basically, during busy times please move along so others can enjoy seating and the coffee shop. Overall, wasn't too impressed and didn't get the vibe where I would want to come back. This is one of the only coffee shops that has some decent space to hang out in the area so I may give it a whirl one more time. read more

I am a regular. I don't drink any of the candy-sweet drinks. I don't think their coffee is incredible but it's not horrible. I drink my coffee straight black. There sometimes can be bitterness. The biggest problem I have with Hyperion is the long lines and the wait time. They have two coffee areas but they refuse to open the second spot. This results in long lines that stuff you between the bathroom and cooler. It's uncomfortable and the snail pace of getting your order in has sometimes sent me home before I could wait. This easily could be fixed if they opened the second spot, even if it were just to fill coffee orders! The owners know that the lines can be really long sometimes, and so it's a little rude to us regulars that they refuse to do what's right--even if it costs them a little more to do it. Despite this complaint, the atmosphere is nice, I like the outdoor seating, the staff is often friendly and cute and having newspapers is a plus. The pastries are average---nothing special. The scones are rock hard. The cookies are my favorite and I love the peanut butter cookie. read more

I dont know if it is a requirement to work there, but I have gone a few times to see if maybe I was just experiencing one or two bad staff, or perhaps they were having bad days, but fairly consistently mediocre, if not downright unfriendly, service. I want to give Hyperion more stars, but I can't-- I just can't! I love coming here when taking a stretch break on the way to D.C. The outdoor seating (and indoor seating) is wonderful. I love how it's a popular spot for locals, which is why we come here every single time we go to D.C. Aside from the atmosphere, location, and local friendly hotspot, the beverages are not that good. I've tried drip coffee at Hyperion several times, and it's always so weak that even a watered down black tea would kick it's ass. I've had a mint Italian soda, which tasted like alka seltzer, as well as hot and iced tea, which is not something I think should even be rated. I will never forget how sad I was when I got this hyped-up mint Italian soda. I went back and talked to the barista about how it's supposed to taste, and she turned very blush saying that perhaps she put too much syrup in it. I felt bad, and she remade me another-- but it still tasted really bad. It wasn't just me-- even my boyfriend couldn't bare a sip. It literally tasted like what I image alka seltzer to taste like-- and there was no mint flavor to be found. This place is still good for meeting up and hanging out, but I think I'll stick to hot tea when I come here. read more

Hyperion is a cute spot for a rather sloppy cup of joe. Due to the volume, drinks come out quickly and look like the barista may have almost missed the mugs (if ordering in). My cherry cider, a Valentine's Day special, was soothing but nothing exceptional. The Fredericksburg coffeehouse attracts students, couples, and families alike. Its universal appeal might be a good thing if you're in the neighborhood with people of all ages. This is my first time coming here. Based on the experience, I'd probably give it 1 star.. but as I see some potential.. I'm going to give it 2. The coffee:iced soy latte... which I get everywhere in the country. Not potent at all. And poured incorrectly. Really disappointing, but whatever. The atmosphere: outdoor seating is always a plus.. which is why I'm giving the place the benefit of the doubt. Indoors, it's so so. Not cozy, but efficient. Medium roast coffee tastes like it's mixed with Earl Grey tea. They sell bagels, but don't have a toaster. The inside of the place has no fabric or other acoustic absorbing material so conversations echo in an uncomfortable way. Overall, I would say that an expression shop with bad coffee and the inability to toast a bagel that they just sold you, combined with an uncomfortable atmosphere for sitting and talking totally defeats the purpose. This year I am 32 years old, and I've lived in the 'burg my whole life with the exception of a boarding school and college hiatus. I must have been going to the Hyperion since I was 16, which was pretty close to the time the place opened its doors. Back then I was drinking their Italian sodas (which I believe they still serve), as I had not yet developed a taste for coffee. But as my tastes developed, the Hyperion was there for me. And I've come to love my occasional cappuccino there when I can scrounge up more than a little pocket change. The coffee is great - and the establishment is definitely better than a Starbucks in ambiance and character. The old checkered floors from when the place was a general store are still there, as well as some of the old fixtures on the ceiling. It's always clean as a whistle, and the coffee is always great - has been for years. Whether you like a strong brew or mild, they can accommodate your tastes with whatever they have on offer. From teas to coffees to chocolate milk, they have it all. There's also free wifi, which is a plus! The outside seating area is great for those who smoke or who have dogs. The Hyperion has historically gone the extra mile and even put a doggie bowl with water on the sidewalk. I prefer the climate-controlled indoors, unless it's one of the two-to-three weeks of bearable weather we get between the onslaught of summer and/or winter weather. However sometimes it can be nice having a hot cup of coffee on a really cold night outside. The lines can get long Sunday mornings, weekend evenings, and the like, but they're worth it. All the folks making the coffee are sardine-canned behind the bar, so you can check out your drink as it's being made. Hands down this is the best place to get coffee in Fredericksburg area - if you can get a seat during their busy times! read more

Great coffee! Awesome staff that is always cool. Always get greeted and they know mine and the girl's usuals (If it's the staff). Just watch out for the owner, short European lady, she is like the meaner version of the soup Nazi. She has good coffee, but she is her own downfall. I'm a regular, 2 - 4 times a week, and my gf goes almost every day, but she is still rude and unpleasant. She always has a bad attitude and she makes you want to leave after throwing your coffee back in her face. She also banned any sort of smoke/vapor outside, which is cool, but there is like a "notice, no smoking..." paragraph warning every 5 inches, which makes it actually annoying. Again, I love the crew and the coffee is pretty good and reasonably priced. Go here to enjoy coffee any day, AS LONG AS THE OWNER IS NOT THERE, and you'll have a good experience. If the owner is there tho, try "Here and Abroad" which is two doors down, and the local owner Vernon's coffee is just as good as his customer service, which is wonderful! read more
