We paid $20 to park and when there were no spots available they refused to give us a refund and said the $20 parking pass would work as a $3 walk in pass. So they got us to spend $20 instead of $6. They'll happily take your money and refuse to refund you for any reason, even if it's their mistake. read more

My spouse took me to Hyrum for the first time last year a place his family has been going to for years and I fell in love with the fishing, beach and views. Though not a particularly impressive state park, with the changing autumn leaves and glittering water, it was pretty enough to have warranted a higher rating, however the high day use fee discourages that. The charge is $10 per vehicle (or $3 on foot). There is a campground available as well, at $25 a night, with cabins for $60. I don't mind paying for use of a government park, but I want to feel it is worth my while, and this is mediocre at best. My family selected it specifically for kayaking, and it got the job done acceptably. There were other visitors with boats and the like, but the area is large, and on a Friday afternoon, our particular patch of green was un-busy. The water seemed clean enough. Those not participating in sports opted to sit near the parking lot and further from the "beach," appreciating the soft grass, shade offered by large trees, and absence of the prickly weeds overtaking the sand. I appreciated the nicer restrooms (there are two sets, the larger, decorated with stone, are superior). read more

Hyrum State Park just sucks! On July 20th there were over twenty boats on a 450 acre reservoir and everyone of them trying to surf. There was no parking and the park was full, but they just kept letting people in. The Park Ranger is a one of those who wants to be a big city cop, but wouldn't cut it. I am a retired cop and I wanted to slap him. It is really disappointing because it use to be a great state park. Chris Bradshaw can and needs to do better in managing the park. He needs to look to Willard or Bear Lake at how to properly manage a state park. read more

We camped here for one night during a road trip. It was just $20 for a site, and ours had a beautiful view of the reservoir. If you had wanted to, you could walk down to the water from the campground. Bathrooms were clean. Our next door neighbors ordered a pizza so apparently you can even get delivery here! I found Hyrum Reservoir on a map and decided to drive there on a whim. When I arrived I discovered that, in order to access the reservoir, one must pay admission to the park. This was something of a turnoff, as I felt like $3 for a walk by the water was a little unjustified. I saved $5 simply by parking at the top of the hill and taking a trail down to the water. The cost for a vehicle to enter the park is $8, which might be worth it if you're traveling there with several people, but not if you're going alone. While I wasn't thrilled with the admission fees, the services offered at the park are myriad. Fishermen and water skiiers were already at it early in the morning, there is a large sandy beachfront for families interested in swimming and sunbathing, and canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards are available for rent. According to their website, Hyrum State Park also features an RV campground. Despite the fact that they're cleaner than motorboats and beach goers, this park does not allow dogs. I brought mine along anyway because we'd driven quite a long way to get there and also because I am a terrible person. I probably got away with it only because it was still pretty early in the morning, and wouldn't suggest that other dog owners follow my lead. In all, this was a nice walk. The reservoir is pretty and is a relatively quiet place in the morning. In the future, however, I'll probably seek out one of the many reservoirs in this area that are free to visit and dog friendly. read more

I prefer to drive a bit farther and boat, swim, sun at Bear Lake instead. This state park is a joke. Fishing from shore can be decent. Catch rainbow trout with spinners or Powerbait, perch with worms, bass from boats with jigs and plastic baits. There are many trails you can walk down to the water from the roads. Some ice fish here with success. People still cliff jump off Big Toe, though I've seen a few people nearly die there thanks to murky water hiding shallows. While okay for fishing, recreation and summer activities are better elsewhere. read more

We have been coming to Hyrum state park for our family reunion for the last 10 years and have loved it. We camp in the little camp area and have so much fun there, but this year was very very different. We had our same itinerary as in previous years on our game day we rented bounce houses as we've done previously. After the bounce houses were set up and the company we rented from left, the ranger showed up and told us he wants them down right now. We called he company to come back and take them down and they were out delivering to other places so we thought well let's let the kids enjoy it while we wait. Not even 20 mins later he shows up again and tells us to take it down, when we tried to explained that the company is on the way to take it down he said he doesn't care, to take it down. We told him we couldn't because they have to set up and take them down. He also told us to turn down the music, it was 2pm, quiet time is at 10 pm. We tried to do what he said to keep the peace so we turned it down but before he left he also told us that quiet time is 9pm when we pointed to the sign that says 10pm he told is, "I don't care what the sign says, I said 9pm!" Anyway he came everyday of our three day stay and was rude and unwilling to listen to reason. But the worst was our last morning as we were breaking down camp he came up to us and said we need to give a $100 deposit, when asked why, (who has ever heard of paying a deposit in the last few hours of an event?) he told us to make sure the campsite is clean when we leave. When we told him that the garbage can was never emptied and the soap dispensers never had soap he said it was our families fault for blocking the garbage can. He said it was a big red truck blocking the garbage can. By this time a few people had gathered to listen to this ridiculousness, someone said we only have one person with a red truck and he is right here and he is a police officer so give him a ticket, then his whole story changed and he was like no, it was a tall blonde guy, we are a family of brown people and we told him then he is not part of our group. He said, "I don't care, he said he was part of your group so you are responsible. And if we can't fit all the garbage in the dumpster with the lid closing properly he was going to charge us $75." Ridiculous!!!! We have never in the 10 years been treated so badly at Hyrum, but you can believe that we will be sure to never return and will let others know. By the way we ALWAYS leave the campsite better than when we came. My brother I. Law way there the first night sweeping and washing down the tables of the pavilion. Despite his best efforts our children had the time of their lives. Campers beware! read more

Our family has been having reunions here for 10 years. We absolutely LOVED it up until this year. Everyday numerous times we had the Ranger come and harass us about something. We had him come tell us to turn the music down at 5pm. It was never anything offensive or too loud. But we complied. Then we had bouncy houses for 6 hours. The first hour they were up we were told to take them down. We had all the kids stay off of it until the company could pick it up. They were notified but could not return until the time we had initially given. Each hour the ranger was told this but he continued to come back andthe bathroom was empty from the time we arrived after multiple complaints they came FRIDAY! We started camp on WEDNESDAY! We had been using our own the whole time. Saturday morning as we were packing AND cleaning like we ALWAYS do. The ranger popped up again to tell me we need a $100 cleaning deposit before we go. Which I was fine with had he approached me the first 10 times he came to our camp during the week. He proceeded to tell me if the dumpster had bags above or around it they would keep $70. I told him the dumpster had never been emptied to begin with. It was pretty full when we had first arrived. He then said there had been a red truck parked in front of it. My brother then pointed to the only red truck my family had. Asked him if it was that one and then said that belonged to a police officer. Who was now walking towards us and told the ranger his truck has been parked in the same spot since the start of camp. The Ranger then literally started stuttering while saying he wasn't sure but the guy was white and blonde and the guy had told him he was with our camp! (We're all Pacific Islanders). I was in disbelief. He was totally back pedaling. Had this been true he would've asked that person to move so the dumpster could be DUMPED. The Ranger was walking back to his truck, check in hand. Whether they keep the money or not I don't care. It saddens me that we have been good loyal customers for 10 years. Our matriarch, grandmother, great-grandmother passed away earlier this year. This was a special year for us we have so many fond memories of her with us here. We have always been courteous. Nodded, smiled, and complied when asked something. No matter if it seemed they were somewhat unreasonable seeing as we were compliant with all the rules and had called to make sure the bouncy house was ok. We just loved this place a lot but have decided to never return after this experience. read more
