It is part of a gas station/general store so service may not be on point as they are covering multiple areas of the store. Doesn't have anything special like in house made waffle cones or anything. Also doesn't strike me as a good place to get shakes or specialty ice creams but if you just want a quick scoop of ice cream for the kids it'll do the trick. Main deciding factor between here and the stand across the street was having the ice cream case so the kids can see/pick out their ice cream and prevent a buyers remorse kid tantrum. Outside seating is limited, just one picnic table and a few benches in front.

In a town where…read morebreakfast options can be somewhat limited, service can move at a different pace than larger cities, and many establishments don't open particularly early, Book Peddler fills a nice niche by serving good coffee, made-to-order breakfast items, and offering a genuinely enjoyable bookstore to browse before heading into Yellowstone. I'd still suggest checking their website for seasonal hours, but we found them open early enough to comfortably fuel up before entering the park. The coffee program is surprisingly strong for a small tourist town bookstore café. They offer several locally roasted coffees, including lighter roasts, darker roasts, and decaf options, along with espresso drinks and specialty coffee beverages. We found the coffee to be among the better options available in town. The breakfast menu was another pleasant surprise. Rather than relying solely on pastries or grab-and-go items, many of the offerings are prepared to order. You'll find breakfast burritos, sandwiches, vegetarian selections, and meat options, giving most travelers enough variety to satisfy differing tastes. It's one of the few places in West Yellowstone where you won't be steered towards elk or bison! During our visit they offered both vegetable and ham quiches, along with chili. Everything we tried was fresh, satisfying, and felt like a step above what we expected to find in a small gateway community. Service is solid, though perhaps not spectacular by large-city standards. Orders can take a little while during busier periods, but honestly it felt very much on pace with West Yellowstone as a whole. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and seemed genuinely interested in making sure guests had a good experience. Given the town's relative isolation and dependence on deliveries, it's also not uncommon for certain items to occasionally be unavailable, whether that's a specific milk option, produce item, or pastry. We found the staff to be upfront about availability, and it never materially detracted from the experience. The bookstore itself is worth spending some time in, even if you originally stopped by only for coffee. The selection leans heavily into Yellowstone, national parks, western fiction, travel, and regional history. It's a much better place to find a unique souvenir or gift to bring home than another shop selling the same T-shirts, magnets, and trinkets found throughout town. Final Thoughts: Book Peddler quietly does several things well at once. It's a good coffee shop, a surprisingly strong breakfast stop, and an independent bookstore that rewards browsing. If you're spending a few days in West Yellowstone, I would recommend making at least one morning visit before heading into the park. After a particularly warm day of hiking, my husband and I resolved to try OTC -- especially since signs read that it was established in 2023. Keeping restaurants open is very hard work. I was interested in trying a buffalo burger while my husband looked forward to more trout. Since this is a family-friendly restaurant, perhaps the entry should be rethought. The door directly opens to the bar, which has high tables where families can be seated. (Here, we chose seats so we could watch the World Cup match.) There's another room with more conventional, lower tables. I asked for sliced jalapenos to be added the buffalo burger with cheddar, lettuce, sliced tomato, diced raw red onion on a toasted bun. Diners can specify to what extent the buffalo is cooked: medium or med rare are recommended. Substitute side fries for a side salad (romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, shredded cheese & crutons) for a nominal fee. * Ask your server to hold the cheese on the salad if you don't prefer it.
