I stumbled in here yesterday after biking through cold wind and rain on my bike trip through Yellowstone. I was not doing well and I knew coffee would save me! This coffee shop/bike shop was a cozy oasis after my adventure and they had so many great coffee options. I got a maple cinnamon latte with oat milk that was exactly what I needed. I will admit that the flavor was extremely subtle, but it was still warm and caffeinated. I also got a cinnamon scone that paired very well with my coffee. Absolutely outstanding and stellar service!! Melissa is so helpfully, knowledgeable and kind!! For the first time ever my friends and I went cross country skiing Melissa not only answered our questions, she gave us pointers and put us with the best ski instructor we could have asked for! Thor was incredible! We had a blast!! He got us up on the skis and kept us up! Needless to say my friend and I are so hooked! We are actually thinking about investing in so skis, Melissa said she would honor or a discount if we bring back the repot at a later date, we were so blown away. I stopped here to return my bear spray (very common to rent in Montana especially if you do any hiking). I had no idea that Freeheel and Wheel was an entire shop full of bike gear, athletic gear, socks and even a cute little coffee house. Epic! I wasn't in the market to buy anything but for someone who is seeking apparel or coffee - I'd recommend stopping here. The interior is super clean and there are helpful staff on-site. Great bikes, and amazing service! My friend and I had grand plans of seeing Yellowstone National Park over Veterans Day weekend. What we failed to realize is that most of the park is closed to cars at that time as they prepare for the transition to winter and oversnow vehicles etc. When we saw this traffic hiccup on our map we quickly made alternate plans of seeing the northern part of the park on the first day and then called around looking for bike rentals for the next day. I was so fortunate to find Freeheel and Wheel on my second call (most businesses in West Yellowstone close for about a month before ski/winter season)! I put in a reservation for two bikes the next day and then was able to breathe easy knowing we had a new plan of attack! The owner of Freeheel and Wheel was super helpful the next day and even put my own personal saddle that I brought with me on the rental so I'd be comfortable for the 50 mile ride! With a bottle of fresh water already attached to each bike we were off! A truly magical day and such good people! Thanks for making our adventure so great! read more

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this shop and the ladies who run it. We were visiting W. Yellowstone and, as cyclists, wanted to rent road bikes to get some exercise. Renting a road bike was simple - a quick call and a credit card. Upon showing up the morning of our rental, the staff were quick to assist us, gracious in lending us helmets and a water bottle (so we had two each), and simply gracious. Soon enough, we were on our way on well-maintained bikes. While the day was cold, we had a great ride without any issue on our bikes. Returning, we had a hot drink (delicious!), a rest on the couch and were off for the remainder of the day. If you are in W. Yellowstone, please consider visiting this business for any bike, ski, coffee or outdoor apparel needs. You won't be disappointed! read more

They have been good to our family for over a decade. We often converge on the Yellowstone area with family from all over the country with a variety of biking skills and gear. Freeheel and Wheal has straighten wheels, replaced tires, serviced brakes, tuned shifters/derailures, serviced our XC skis and rented us bike trailers when we were flush with toddlers. I appreciate their work and costuner service/communication. From our $50 junker to the $4k carbon bikes they always treat us the same. Keep in mind this is a small shop and can be be in very high demand depending on the season and the day of the week. We love them and will always come back. read more

We stopped in and grabbed two coffees and a hot chocolate for my daughter and they were super yummy! We also got a brownie and a cookie which were really good as well, but the best part of our experience were the girls working there who gave us helpful information about things we could do and what was open or closed. We ended up renting snow shoes as well and the girls were super helpful in guiding us where to go. Definitely stop in for a coffee while you're in town. Bad service - avoid if possible! Listen I get it... they're the only game in town for bike rentals this time of year, so you may have no choice but to give them your business. But if you can help it, any alternative is better. They're just not nice folks. It's unfortunate that this place knows they have a good hold on the market and therefore has abandoned any semblance of customer service because it's inconsequential to them. Not the way to run a business! Me and my small crew showed up one morning asking about rentals.... we aren't rude or pushy people. We were in the area, deciding what to do for the day and figured we'd stop by and inquire. It was hard enough to get someone to acknowledge us and when they did, the woman out front wouldn't even look at us as she spoke. She said no rentals for the rest of the day and then turned her back to us. We called later in the day asking if it's possible to make reservations ahead of time... they said no. So what do we do? Next morning we show up right at their posted opening time, thinking we can perhaps jump in line for bikes. But it was the same story - rude woman at the front that isn't helpful or pleasant to interact with and no bikes available even though they just opened and told us over the phone the day before we can't make reservations. I get it.... they're busy and getting lots of traffic. I can't knock that. If you don't have bikes available, you don't have bikes available. But perhaps if they were helpful, polite and pleasant people we would keep them in mind for next time we are visiting Yellowstone. But this was not the case, so they will not get our business in the future. read more

ADV Rider. :{) My eldest son and i were passing by(on foot) and caught a slight breeze that carried with it the delicious aroma of coffee. He and i caught it about the same time, turning to one another we both laughed "that's good coffee" and we looked around to see where it was coming from. On a whim we looked inside the bike shop and sure enough! We were immediately greeted by a really nice young lady behind the counter and we placed our order. For our tour through Yellowstone National Park, we rented a Gaperguide at Freeheel and Wheel. As advertised, it was "simple and inexpensive." We simply plugged it into our cigarette lighter, and as soon as we entered the park, our "tour" began. It contained the perfect amount of information with the option of more "fun facts." We especially appreciated the recommendations for places to pull off the road and sights to see. We liked the Gaperguide so much, that we kept it for a second day. This is an outstanding little spot -- densely packed with awesomeness. It's the hub of XC ski culture in West Yellowstone. But more than having everything you need for Nordic skiing (sell, rent, fix, wax, lessons), this gem is just packed with stylish clothes, especially for the ladies. And an espresso bar, with baked goodies. I have to disagree, too, with the prior review. I was in West that same week and found the skiing to be good. There was not a ton of snow, but with XC skiing, you don't need it. You only need a good surface. True, there were spots where the tops of individual whispy little yellow blades of grass were poking up, but that did not undermine the quality of the skiing. And, yes, there was one steep hill where the groomer turned up a bit of underlying bark. But the vast majority of the many miles of groomed trails were perfectly good for skating. True, no classic tracks could be set in the Rendezvous "proper" trails during the early part of that week, but the grooming report said 20km of classic had been set on the South Plateau, which is accessed right from the entry Rendezvous trail ("In and Out"). I think the prior reviewer should have asked if classic tracks had been set, if that was necessary for his group to have a good time. I'm not sure how he missed the classic tracks on the South Plateau (snow-covered) Road. Several days after he was there (and before it snowed), I skied classic w/o tracks, and it was good -- not icy, not hard, plenty of kick. Anyway, great local spot. I sometimes stop by even when I don't need ski stuff just to see about a cute apparel gift for my GF. read more

Awesome place. Not clear what it is : ski rental, mountain gear shop or coffee house ? But they deserve 5 stars for the three categories. Very nice and friendly staff, comfy couch and cheap prices. Take 5 minutes to stop here before entering into the park. If you want to cross country ski, it is definitely the place to go for advices. read more
