It doesn't look like much from the outside (or the inside for that matter) but looks can be deceiving. These "hole in the wall" places are usually the best and this is no exception. America is quickly becoming coast to coast franchises but locally owned restaurants like I & I don't just lend nostalgia to a quickly disappearing past, but give us hope for the future. I'm sure you're not reading this review for my prophesy for the future of the US, so here's a review of the food. Ah-mazing. I got the Elwood Burger Cheddar Horseradish Chive Cheese, Bourbon Bacon Jam, Grilled Onion and a side of fries. The burger was well portioned, and perfectly cooked. The toppings were to die for. We were just passing through and needed dinner but if I'm ever in whatever town this is again, I will definitely be stopping here. I can't say this is the best restaurant in town, only because I've only eaten here but my suspicion is that it is. I'm tempted to purchase the property across the street (beside the prison) just to eat here every day. I think it'd be a fair trade. Just don't pick up any hitchhikers out front. read more

It seems like Danville really cherishes these locally owned hole in the wall grills and I love that! Our first experience at I & I was great! The food was really good - my husband had a burger and I had a grilled tenderloin. We noticed on the menu that all of the meat was locally raised, which explains why the prices are higher than average. The fries were really yummy. And our service was top-notch. For a return trip it was everything ai expected and more. The server was on top of it from start to finish, the food top notch and the portion size HUGE. Right across the Indiana state line on the West side of Indiana sits this little gem that serves up awesome hamburgers made with local sourced beef and many other items such as fish, steak, and chicken. We ordered two appetizers of onions rings, fried green beans and when they arrived we realized at that moment we were never going to finish either of them. The portions were huge and the freshness and flavor were great! They have many specialty hamburgers to choose from and the standards as well. I went with the Ellie burger with grilled onions and bacon jam. It was massive and delicious. My partner chose the mushroom and Swiss for a home run. The burgers come with your choice of fries, chips or Cole slaw. We both chose fries and they were really really good. We could have did just fine with the fries as our side but we splurged. The interior of the place is a little dark but warm and comfortable. There are even a few slot machines to entertain you if you desire. Came for a quick lunch after going to the VA. The fries are on point, crispy! Now the burger wasn't bad. It's definitely big. The toppings made the burger. BUT the burger meat was not seasoned. What a yummy find! We were on our way home from a soccer game in Illinois and with the good reviews figured we'd give it a try. Late at night, it felt like the restaurant was in the middle of nowhere - like a hidden secret! It's nothing fancy but both the food and service were terrific. The burgers and the catfish were the standouts. We tried two different burgers and both were full of flavor and cooked to perfection. We also enjoyed the fried pickles! Wings were good, but the breaded kind with sauce on the side which isn't my favorite but that's a personal choice. We also loved the French onion soup. Drinks were very affordable (after $14 cocktails last weekend, $6 was a bargain!!!). The kitchen was backed up so service was slow, but the food was worth the wait. We were staying in Danville for a couple of nights and wanted to find a place with good food since we'd been in the road for 2 days. The reviews of this place were positive so we decided to give it a try (it was Valentine's Day btw), and we were not disappointed. In fact, I had the BEST catfish of my life. No joke! And spending time in TX as a youngster, I had a lot of catfish. The breading is done perfectly; cornmeal and not too thick. You can taste the fish and its melt in your mouth flaky, light and delicious. In fact, my husband ate so much of mine, we tried to go back the next day so we both could get it but the kitchen was closed that day. It came with coleslaw and fries. I don't eat coleslaw but my husband said it was good. The fries are 4 star fries. They were not crispy and were a bit greasy. The drinks we ordered were delicious and when I asked for a margarita without the mixer they were accommodating and checked to make sure it was how I liked it. My husband got a cheeseburger and ordered it medium rare but was brought out well done. The server was great and let us know she forgot to tell the kitchen and took it back and had it remade. This is such a rare thing in food service that I would come back for the service! They had a dessert special of crème brûlée and I can't pass up that dessert as it's my favorite. The sugar was perfectly caramelized and the vanilla crème was creamy and delicious! The place is clean and the service is amazing!! If I'm ever back in Danville, this is where I will go! First time eating here and I loved it. Got the potato bacon pizza because I've never had potato on a pizza. It was amazing! The bartender/server brought out the hot sauce and pizza seasoning. I'm so glad I tried it because I loved it!! It goes great on the fries and the pizza. I asked where they got them, she said they sell them there! So I bought Butch's sauce and seasoning. First and foremost this is out in the country on the Indiana/Ilinois border. Lit up in the night like a neon light bulb. It's a small place but I love love love it and will definitely be back soon!!! Went on a Friday night around 7 and only had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. There is a bar you could sit at if there's an open spot. Pool table, some gambling machines, and the rest are tables. They had the cutest deco going on for Valentine's Day - white tree with red ornaments. Very festive and I really thought it "softened" the bar atmosphere. My group was able to order drinks while we waited, and the owner actually arranged that. He was super cool and friendly, and mingled with the patrons. Food - it was DA BOMB When I say I'll go back? It's for the food!! That night they had an all you can eat catfish dinner. Lots of people having that. Ordered the French onion soup and it was pretty tasty. Yes, I have it on the owner's word that it's homemade. I got the smoked pork chop dinner and it did NOT disappoint the baked potato was HUGE and enough for two people. The meat was perfectly cooked. It was delicious and I would get it again. Someone at my table got the catfish and I tried a piece of it and again, really liked it! One of my friends gave the slaw and tartar sauce super high marks too. Great food and great drinks! This is my second visit to this gem. Stopped in last time on the recommendation of the hotel front desk person and it had a wow factor then, and again tonight! Place looks like a typical midwestern bar, nothing fancy or special. Big wooden bar, pool table, jukebox, gambling machines, you can picture it. When you look at the menu you can see right away that this is no normal bar! The service is great, seems like these folks have worked here for a while and know what they are doing. Food is fantastic. Last time I was here they ran a special on spaghetti that my partner tried, was awesome and I had the catfish dinner. Tonight I tried one of their burgers and it was outstanding + affordable! Yes indeed I would come back for the food but what REALLY impressed me was the friendliness and cozy atmosphere of this tavern. Mandy and Jessica are the BEST staff a restaurant could ever ask for. I was passing through town but their attentiveness and warmth made me want to move to Danville if they are any representation of the folks here. What a nice surprise! I had just driven cross country and made an overnight stop in Danville. The hotel clerk recommended this tavern to eat at. I was a bit skeptical but decided to go. The Tavern is located on the state line of Iowa and Illinois. It is a bar that had really great tasting food. I ordered the Catfish sandwich with fries which was huge and tasty. The Blondie is hands down the best burger that I've ever had! The sweet and savory combo is worth the drive!!! The batter on the fries and onion rings were a pleasant change from the norm. We visited this restaurant because the reviews were good and we love catfish. We ordered a catfish sandwich because the dinner was $17 for a piece of fish, fries and slaw. Which would have cost us $34 without tip and drinks. The waitress suggested a blondie burger which she raved about. It had pineapple and was saturated in teriyaki sauce so much so that you couldn't pick the burger up to eat it and the bun tasted more like a pancake than a bun and it cost $13 with no sides. The fries were small like end pieces. The drinks were in cans so you didn't get refills without paying extra. The fish was so so but nothing special about it but it was only $10. The burger was awful. The waitress seemed not to notice or care that there was a lot left on my plate. In fact she commented that I was hungry and I just stared at her. The bill was still $40 with a tip and it was not something I would ever repeat. I do not recommend this place because of the high prices and the food that is trying to be something that it clearly is not. read more

I needed to blow off some steam after discovering my hotel for the night was not going to work out for me. So I was happy to spot this border straddling spot with food and drinks. I walked in to a mostly empty bar save for a small group playing pool and drunk singing to a song playing on the jukebox. Perfect. The bartender was quick with my beer. I had a Briggs Urbana Hefeweizen, which is a locally made beer. Cool! I was starving so I ordered some fried green beans and cheddar cauliflower. Hello huge portions! I couldn't finish my food. There were plenty of TVs and the bartender offered the remote to me. I felt like I was at home or something. ha ha. So, if you're in the area, feel free to stop by and stuff your belly with some good greasy food and local craft beer. read more
