This spot was jumping this Sunday afternoon. Definitely a popular choice with the locals, and that's always a good sign! The parking lot was full, but we were able to be sat right away. We were taken to a booth and the seats and table were wet from the quick wipe it had just been given. It wasn't just wet, there were also lots of crumbs that had been left behind. As I looked around, I noticed that the floors were littered with trash and food also. Straw wrappers, napkins and bits of food were present under each and every table. I understand that during a busy rush, the staff probably can't take the time to sweep, but even after the rush nobody bothered to address it. There was a gentleman bussing tables who stayed "on patrol", though. He circled the dining room at regular intervals and made sure that dishes were cleared in a timely manner. I see you, sir! We were greeted right away and our drink orders were taken. That young lady was very kind and upbeat, which was quite welcoming. When she returned with our beverages, she offered to take our orders, but we weren't ready. And just like that, she ditched us! J/K, but kind of for real. A different waitress appeared and took over from there. She was efficient and took good care of us, but in a way, she wasn't as warm. She was no-nonsense and straight to the point. Our food was decent. My husband had The Special, which is a basic breakfast plate (eggs, French toast and bacon), I had the turkey club with fries, and my in-laws both had phily steak sandwiches with fries. The food didn't come out super fast, but that gave us time to settle-in and not feel rushed. It was quite nice and a change from what my husband and I are accustomed to where we live. We had a leisurely meal and caught up with old friends who wandered in and out during our meal. That was another clear sign that this place is a local favorite. read more

I'm in Danville for business quite often, and whenever I ask people where I should be eating in the area, they always mentioned Gilbert Street Cafe. I'm really starting to understand the "midwest diner", a large restaurant that always seems to be busy, friendly wait staff and a menu that has every classic American option under the sun. The food is typically done well, and that's why everyone recommends Gilbert Street Cafe. I've come here on three separate occasions thus far and my experiences have been quite consistent. My first visit I got their fried chicken tenders, with their vegetable of the day and a side of hash browns. The breading on the tenders were pretty good, but the chicken itself was missing some seasoning. The vegetable of the day (which seems to always be the vegetable of the day whenever I visit) was mixed veggies. It probably was the stuff you buy frozen in the bag, that was just okay as well. The hash browns were fantastic though, I would highly recommend getting breakfast items, they seem to do those extremely well! My next visit I order the chopped steak and I was very impressed. This one had a lot of good flavor, wasn't too dry and, did I mention that the portions here are super big? That's the midwest diner for ya! On my most recent visit I got the country fried steak with mashed potatoes. This steak was also huge, maybe even larger than the size of my face. It came with this delicious white gravy that reminded me of the gravy put on biscuits and gravy here in the south. It was full of pepper, just the way I liked it. The potatoes on the other hand were a bit disappointing, it was almost like it was powdered mash. Not even the gravy could save it from the texture and flavor. If you're looking for a place to take the family, look no further than Gilbert Street Cafe. I had the Chicken Fajita Skillet with my eggs over easy. Absolutely LOVE that they have breakfast all day, or at least extended hours! The hubs and my friend were ready for lunch, but I almost always love breakfast more. Flavoring was good and the serving size was great. Took almost half of it home for another meal. Service was attentive and the atmosphere was diner-like. Prices were reasonable and we all left feeling pretty happy. read more

Ordered eggs over easy. Got half raw eggs!! Cut into them and the White of the egg was uncooked and running all over my plate!! Everyone else had ordered scrambled eggs, so they ate while I had to send mine back. By the time I was once again served Guess What yes again running egg white all over my plate!!! Again showed waitress, She again offered new food, but every one else had finished. So we just left!!! And they Dared to charge me!!! Even though I did not het one bite of eatable food!!! read more

Found the recommendation on Yelp. Glad we found it. We both ordered off the Senior menu- me the pork chop, the flavor was good and it was super juicy. I wish she would have offered some BBQ sauce. Hubby got the hamburger steak. He said he's had worse and he's had better. It looked juicy. Got the sautéed onions that he didn't want. Thankfully he just scooped them off. We would return if coming thru Danville again. We thought it wouldn't be busy since it was just 5 pm. We were wrong. They were super busy. The waitress never checked on us after the meal was delivered. The parking lot had room for our truck and a smaller trailer when we first got here. Went on Mother's Day with the family, all 6 of us were impressed. The parking lot was packed, wait was only maybe 15 minutes. The food was delicious, we had the hash stack, country fried steak, Cobb salad and a grilled chicken salad. Everyone loved their food and left feeling full, and with some left overs. One complaint/request from my sister is that the grilled chicken salad should be served with the chicken, peppers, and onions already be served diced (instead of sliced in huge pieces). Also, I do agree with the last review, the entry door is very hard to open, either it is too heavy or it just feels like it has a lot of resistance. read more

Don't go by the exterior or neighborhood. This little restaurant has great seafood! DH got the 2-piece catfish dinner and I got the fried shrimp po'boy with fries. Fresh, fresh, fresh! You'll think you are sitting on the beach. Drinks are bottled, even water, but that wonderful fresh seafood will make up for that! read more

Great stop for breakfast or lunch- kid friendly menu, they had soda alternatives for kids (chocolate milk and juice) which we appreciate. Service was quick and friendly. Food was served hot and accurate orders. We had wings, French toast, monte cristo, lasagna, and a burger, and all were excellent. Left with two big to-go boxes. I love catching a breakfast here while I'm in town to visit my family. I always go for a Skillet with ham, mushroom, onion, green pepper, and cheese topped with over easy eggs. I also enjoy a side of their sausage gravy - which is delicious. My Mom always gets the Chicken Fried Steak with gravy and I snag a few bites. It's fantastic. Cant tell you much about the food but it appears to be overpriced dennys geared toward the 65 plus crowd which theres nothing wrong with that. I got seated immediately they did great there. After that totally failure. Staff chatting it up with other staff while your patrons are waiting for you is a total no no. No staff came to the table and I promptly left. What a fabulous find. Showed up at 6 pm on a Saturday right behind a party of 10. Two other tables of 6 were already being served and takeouts were flying out the door. My mom and I both ordered the Greek salad which came with fried chicken and feta cheese for the cheese, the homemade Greek dressing was fantastic my mom had a homemade ranch which was delicious to dip the chicken in. This is the new name for this restaurant. The foods good and a reasonable price. I've ate there many times. Most the time the portions are huge. My mom would rarely eat it all and take a doggie bag home to finish it the next day. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone that hasn't tried it.
