I am in this area often and I pass this place every time, but I hadn't gone in until the other day. My Brooklyn personality instantly took over. It's FRIGGIN AWESUM OVAH HEER. I walked through this whole place with someone else, giggling with glee. I saw meat bread (lard bread), I saw a deli counter with delicious cold cuts & ham nobody pronounces right, and homemade salads, and smiling friendly folks behind the counter, and fresh SMOKED mozzarella (motz), which I've been missing ever since I moved to Jersey. There was fresh meats, pasta, fish, and ring sausage, cannoli, and homemade sauces, and pre-cooked Italian dishes for the folks who wanna try it all, but not make it themselves. Plus bottled and canned items I remembered as a kid, and most straight from Italy. The whole place smelled like parmesan cheese, and felt warm. All that was missing was the sawdust on the floors. lol (yeah I'm old). I bought pasta, their sauce, smoked motz, and parmesan parsley sausage links and made a nice dinner for my friend, enough to pig out and store for another day. The food is mediocre. The service is appalling. I have been sitting at my table for over 15 minutes with an empty glass, plenty of staff are continually walking by and not bothering to even check in with me, and I've been waiting to for boxes and the check. There is only one other table occupied right now and there really is no excuse. Absolutely terrible and would not even recommend to my enemies. And yes, I finally just stopped someone and asked for the check and boxes. But what a crappy place for me to have to do that after 15 minutes with what appears to be a ratio of about 4 staff for every patron. read more

Typically I grab and go whether its pizza or a sandwich but recently I sat down and dined in for the first time. This place has been here forever and finally had a chance to try it. Authentic Italian food recommended by an Italian. They are known for their sandwiches. It's like a deli and mini store. I had the Marco Polo which consisted of chicken, mozzarella, peppers. You have to pick your bread first, when you enter, pick bread on your left, order on the right. The store is shaped like an upside down U, the other side sells pasta and other Italian goodies, this is where the cash register is as well. No seating at all. I have been an Iavaverones customer since 1986. Two weeks ago I ordered a godfather hero, a sandwich I have eaten for years. It was the first time I was disappointed with anything from Iavaverones. It had very little meat. I thought it was a fluke considering its been a place that I trusted. Today another godfather with lots of lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and hardly any meat or cheese. So disappointed !! Had to throw away 2 of my purchases!! 1) the foccacia was very dry and old and had a funny smell, I took one bite and threw the entire package away. 2) Dry salted Baccala also in the garbage! I can't stress enough how memorable a bbq is with a porterhouse from Iavarone. As soon as i finish cooking that steak a perfect medium and slice it for everyone to try the first question i get asked is "where did you get the steak?" It always brings me great joy to know that the people enjoy the quality as much as i do. Everything from Iavarone is delicious and fresh so believe the hype. When someone asks for quality meats i always direct them here. They have beautiful cuts, their meat is never crowded, very nicely organized. Their salads are delicious and fresh as well. You really can't go wrong with trying the food from here, i choose this over any supermarket beef, chicken, sometimes they even have fresh fish. Oh mommy is this place good. I used to come here all the time for lunch since I used to work in Middle Village. So this place consists of two sections: first section is a deli section where they have a vast array of Italian cold cuts for sandwiches and by the pound. And then there is a food by the pound section ranging from the rice balls, to chicken parm, to pasta salad, to everything you can thing of. The second section, on the left side, is a butcher and seafood section where you could get steaks and some seafood like fish and shellfish. This is a to go place only and it's nice that you will always see a ton of cops here. This is the first location I visited after being recommended to the string of stores. My husband and I made the drive (just 15-20 minutes) and it was a lot smaller than we had expected. In any case- there were some yummy options and we wanted to walk away with some goodies! We purchased a 1/2 pound of marinated mushrooms, mixed olives, a piece of chicken parm, and a package of uncooked chicken sausage with feta and spinach. My husband heated the chicken parm to have with his leftover angel hair from Vincent's Clam Bar. I still had plenty of leftover meat in my dish so I was good on that end. He loved it. I took a bite and it was pretty good. Most notable was the fresh mozzarella topping. I immediately started snacking on the mushrooms and had to force myself to stop. They're delicious!!! A few days later we made the chicken sausage in a premade sauce we had at home and were blown away. This was definitely the best chicken sausage we've had. Iavarone on Metropolitan Avenue is a great place. While I normally buy meats and such from my local butcher, occasionally I'll pick them up here. There food is always fresh and tastes great. One of my favorites is the Godfather hero that is made fresh daily. The store is clean and the workers are friendly and have no problem making special sandwiches or slicing meat a certain way etc. I don't know about those coffee beans though, I've yet to see one person buy them, in all the years I've been going (many years). Only had half a dozen of their salads and only 3 different kinds. Did not have any of their great selection of salads like the Goat Cheese Salad or Chef Salad or many others available in New Hyde Park And on top of that, they only have prepackaged Ken's dressings to choice from, they have no Iavarone vinegrette that I have been enjoying for many years read more
