This place is a local cornerstone, and carries a reputation with older Portlanders. It's been around a while, and has stayed true to what they are. I will say that some dishes can be hit or miss. For example I love their fried rice, but sometimes it has a slightly off flavor. Like the grill needs to be cleaned? I wouldn't expect too much on the interior, I always order takeout. It has a slight dingy appearance, and sometimes smells strongly of cleaning liquids. (While I appreciate the evidence of a clean kitchen/ restaurant, it can be a bit overwhelming) They also have a free soup to have while you wait for your order- while on the plainer side, I still appreciate the offer. Picked up some take out last night and can't say it's the best teriyaki I've had. Actually, not even close. The people taking my order was very nice and friendly though and I appreciated that. I ordered 2 combo meals; one with chicken and beef and the other with chicken and short ribs. The ribs were the only thing that I really enjoyed. The teriyaki beef was very dry and tough. The chicken was kind of mixed. Some pieces were better than others. We also got a kids meal with noodles and the noodles were pretty good. The salad dressing for the salad was very bland. If I ever crave noodles, I'd stop by for some yakisoba. read more

We are regular customers and they take good care of us. The food is delicious and we get to split a meal which saves us some money.

When I went to pick up my order, I walked in and got attended by an Asian woman with tattoos. The moment I asked her for my order she turned her back on me when I tried to show her the order on my phone. She told me that the wrong order would be out soon since she didn't even bother to take the time to look at the order I showed her. I was waiting on the side, and another client entered and when she turned to them she noticed me still standing there. She either didn't care or had forgotten I was there for an order because she asked me if I was going to order something. Once I told her I was still waiting on the order to be ready for pickup, she got really hysterical and aggressive towards me. Then, she started telling me that I was very impatient and to just cancel the order or do whatever I wanted. I told her I couldn't cancel the order anymore and she continued to get mad at me, so I just told her to not worry since it will be my last time going there. This is based on my own experiences as well as what I have read on here from other paying customers... I highly suggest that the owner takes the hint from several of the people who pay his overhead and start being nicer to his customers. Nobody is saying that you have to play "super host" and run around talking to all of your customers, but a little smile or positive attitude goes a long way. Your operating hours are posted for a reason. If you do not want people dining in 30-45 minutes prior to closing then let people know or post a sign stating so. You seem to be ok taking the customers money 30 minutes prior to closing. Another suggestion is to close an hour earlier and you clean up on your own time for the last hour. You cant have it both way. Well, you can, but you obviously are burning some bridges. Most everything else out here for food options suck! I have worked out here for almost 10 years and used to go to Teriyaki king. They give me the creeps there and the people arent friendly. They glare at you when you want to pay by credit card. On top of that, the value isnt very good. Best teriyaki place I've found in Portland so far! We got this absolutely delicious and HUGE portion of sesame chicken and chicken teriyaki with noodles and salad for only $10.50! My fiancé and I had big appetites and we couldn't even finish all of it! The sauces taste very fresh and the noodles are cooked just right. They weren't mushy and they weren't hard or over cooked, they were perfect! We got a choice between macaroni salad or regular green salad and we chose the green salad. A very overdue review for a phenomenal location! My wife introduced me to Ichi 23 through her work. They frequently purchase from here for their staff meetings and brought some food to me one day. I've been hooked ever since. Great portion sizes, excellent flavors, and always served hot! The lo-mein and teriyaki chicken plates are among the best in town. My kids love the orange chicken and gyoza! The cost is a bit higher than other nearby teriyaki stops, but the portion size and quality are well worth the extra dollar or two.
