We had a very good meal at Ichiban. The place was not too crowded around 6:30p on a Saturday night, so we seated in a nice comfy booth. I got the Sashimi Deluxe plate and my niece got the pork ramen. Both were very good. The sashimi was very fresh and tasty. The ramen was not too salty, and the nooodles were thick and tasty. The fried pork pieces were also not too salty. Just right. Food: we got a free little sample of some kimchi which was really good. Liked that the fried chicken came with daicon radish, but the chicken wasn't crunchy like we were expecting. Both the American hammer and grace rolls were good. They do offer vegetarian and cooked sushi which is nice. Dumplings weren't bad, didn't care for the sauce though. Service: the host was soo nice and welcoming, & the servers were very attentive as well. Extras: off street parking, not many slots, and it's kind of a tight fit. So it looks like Ichiban is under new management since we were last there about a year ago. The good news is that the food quality appears to be maintained: we shared apps of the seafood pajeonn and seared scallops which were tasty; my wife's seafood jigae was also good as in past visits; and my sushi & sashimi combo and daughters' chirashi bowls were fresh and beautifully plated. On the downside, however, is that the formerly complimentary banchan of kimchi, namul, and other small sides is no longer provided - indeed, a serving of kimchi is $3.95! Really? The menu has also been slimmed down a little; on the other hand, new additions such as Korean fried chicken are now offered. So all in all, if you're looking for your fave dishes they'll likely still be there and better yet, they'll still taste as you remembered. read more

This place is right around the corner from my house so I've been in many many many times! Can't believe I haven't reviewed them before infact! The owner is a sweetheart!! There are tons of options in the menu but I always get the shrimp fried rice as the portion is enough for at least two meals. I also get something else but it changes each time. Things are always great! A couple of my girlfriends always get the bibimbab or katsu don. Everything is always super tasty! Decor and ambiance are super simple but that makes it feel homey and like a neighborhood spot. read more

So, so great! We went tonight with our 20 month old and had amazing service and amazing food. I had the salmon lovers dinner which was perfect. Our waiter said their kimchi was the best, and he wasn't lying. We loved our seafood scallion pancakes and even our toddlers French fries were crispy and hot and delicious. House salad was cold and crisp, miso soup was flavorful and has more than two tiny bits of tofu like most places offer. My husband loved his Kimchi ramen and tried hand grated wasabi for the first time! The owners came and chatted with us and our toddler. Our toddler isn't talking yet but he still included him in our convo and was very kind. Our waiter was so sweet and had great suggestions and fast service. 10/10. read more

We were visiting the area for a dance competition and decided on sushi. Based on the positive reviews we agreed on Ichiban. The location and restaurant itself leave much to be desired. We walked inside anyway and we were pleasantly greeted. The restaurant inside is fine. Nothing special or anything to rave about but actually smelled clean (they just opened). It was a quick lunch and I ordered the Nigiri Sushi for one. $19.95 and it included miso soup. It was presented well and was extremely fresh. It was a filling lunch and I'm glad we went. Unfortunately, we went here during a sushi chef in training. Ordered a super expensive sashimi meal. After 1.5 hours of waiting, I still didnt get my meal, even after watching 10, if not 15, takeout orders go out. We were the only people in the restaurant. My entire party had eaten already. Stopped in Ichiban again recently as I was craving sushi. Beyond amazing sushi, and impeccable quality, there are so many little things about this place that make it shine above and beyond nearby places. For example, Ichiban makes their own soy sauce which has such a different and unique and complex flavor compared to bought in stuff or those little packets you get elsewhere. They have a rack of chop sticks for regulars to leave their chop sticks for next time, with labels to know whose is whose. With a to-go order, each maki roll is labeled in marker on the outside of the clear transparent container. This is such a simple and quick gesture that adds a layer of quality and care to each order. The decor is nice, yet at the same time no frills and comforting. It's small enough that it can feel quaint and homey, but big enough that it feels established yet "formal" in the sense that it is not a hole in the wall. With this order, Carol took time on the phone to answer questions about a new special roll I wanted to try (volcano roll, which was amazing btw). Before I even went to get my order I was feeling excited just based on her explanations and answers on the phone. Going in you're greeted immediately with an exciting-sounding "hi! how are you?" and multiple staff make eye contact. Such a stark difference compared to the level of service and hospitality at other places where you're waiting endlessly, or walk in and nobody is around, or feel like a cog in a machine. The difference here is that you're greeted by an owner, or maybe an owners family member (seems like several generations work here, as it is family owned and family run), rather than someone who is unattached, just clocking in and maybe doesn't care. You can tell that they genuinely value every customer's business whether it is a regular or someone visiting for their first time from out of town. You can see that everyone puts their heart and soul into it, which in the end shows in the amazing caliber of the food and service. read more

l've had Ichiban a couple times but this is my first time making a review! I'm usually skeptical about places that mix different asian cuisines, but I feel like Ichiban does it well. I had takeout this time and got a chirashi bowl, which wasn't as fresh as when I got it at the restaurant and slightly fishier, but it was still good! I'm embarrassed to say I hadn't heard of this place until recently. It came up in a yelp list for sushi and I decided the reviews were worth the trip. I am so glad we checked this spot out tonight! The restaurant itself is quaint and welcoming. They have such a huge menu it was difficult to choose what to eat. We ultimately decided on fried shumai, Samsun Jam-Bong (homemade noodles with seafod and vegtables), kimchi, some sashimi and some Maki rolls. Everything was great but the slam dunk was definitely the noodle dish. Savory, spicy broth with perfectly cooked homemade noodles, vegetables, octopus, shrimp, and scallops. I couldn't get enough. It's probably my favorite noodle dish I've ever had. All of the service was so warm and efficient. We can't wait to come back and try more of their specialty items. read more

Haven't been here in awhile so it was nice to check in. The same owners are here which is nice to see. The restaurant was clean with a sushi aroma- uou can tell this was a sushi house. The waitstaff ok but the two kids who were the bus people needed more training. Now the food - the crab Rangoons lacked crab and were not stuffed enough. But the sweet potato noodles were delicious. Something Like a Filipino dish. The sushi is still the best!! Tightly rolled with a fresh taste. But the star of the dinner was the combo fried rice!! It was amazing with the works and an egg over the top. Muah! So honestly if those bus people were working as hard as the waitstaff they might have got a 5 but a loud 4t for me. This was a great find! The menu goes on forever with both Korean and Japanese dishes! I love the idea of having it all in one place for everyone to choose what they fancy! The sushi was fresh and delicious and the presentation was top tier! We also enjoyed the jajangmyeon and sticky wings. Finished off the meal with the delectable fried ice cream which was sooo good! My only suggestion would be a better water/soda fountain filter as the drinks were not the best. Overall this place will be on my list of options from now on. read more

My wife and I were out shopping in Cranston and decided to find a sushi place. Ichiban was one of the restaurants that caught my attention. So, on a whim we decided to try it. Upon arrival, the outside of the restaurant seemed tired, like it could use some cleaning and a fresh coat of paint. My wife and I were a bit skeptical, but you know that old saying "don't judge a book by its cover" so we went in. We were greeted warmly by an older gentleman, who I assumed was the owner, and given our choice of seating. The menu was extensive and also featured lunchtime specials. My wife and I both opted for the sushi combo lunch special; she chose a salad and I went for the soup. We also went with some fried shumai as a starter. While we waited we were greeted by two more, I am guessing, family members; the wife and son. The wife brought us some table samplers for us to enjoy while we waited. One of the dishes was kimchi, which was delicious. The shumai then showed up and it was outstanding, lightly fried to perfection. Next up was the soup and salad. The soup was really good and the salad looked amazing. My wife enjoyed it thoroughly. Finally the sushi combos arrived; everything seemed very fresh and was delicious. All in all I say this place is a keeper. Next time we are back in Cranston we will be back. read more

To say that I adore Ichiban would be a hideous understatement. I am crazy about this place in a "cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs" kinda way... The people, the fresh authentic food, the service...gold stars all around. It's authentic Korean food is spectacular but their sushi is probably in the top three I've ever tasted in my lifetime - and I'm not young and I've eaten a lot of sushi around the world so that's saying something. What makes it so good? It's so so so fresh... Like fish hopping out of the water and into their sushi kitchen. I'm typically a tuna type of gal but here, the salmon is a MUST. It's tender and just the right amount of fatty goodness. It melts in your mouth. In fact, they will accommodate subbing in salmon in place of any fish you wish. My favorite roll is the Crazy Dragon. Their dumpling soup is another must try. It's a spin on egg drop with their house made dumplings. Imagine a next level won ton soup experience and then multiple that by ten. My go to entree is the Bibimbap done in the stone crock. Tender beef mixed with mushrooms, veggies, seaweed and egg served with rice that sizzles and gets super duper crispy. If you like a kick, the sauce they serve will light your fire. So good. Please do not miss the kimchee. House made wth just the right tang and crunch. The only downside is that every time I eat here, i want to go back the next day... And the next... And the NEXT! Prices are reasonable, service is friendly and the people are gracious. This place gets buzzing so call ahead as seating is limited due to covid times. But I've had takeout here as well and it's still outstanding (dine in for the Bibimbap). Also, their hours of operation have changed so call ahead before you get your heart set on dining here to make sure they're open. As of now, they're open Thursday thru Sunday. Visiting my in-laws and after having Italian food twice a day for almost a week straight, this girl needed some Asian food. Stumbled upon this place and it did not disappoint. Food - amazing! I'm from so cal where Korean food is plentiful and it tastes like home. I ordered the Sam Jjampong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and it was piping hot, spicy (must order Korean spicy), smokey, and full of seafood (without it being fishy). The kimchi was really good as well. A tad bit sweeter than I'm used to but not overly salty like some of the ones from a jar. Hubby ordered sushi and he was impressed by the quality. Service - Jimmy and his wife were really nice and attentive. They stopped by to make sure we were okay and chatted with us as well. Super friendly and hospitable. Parking - plenty of parking on the left, right, and behind the building. Overall, a wonderful experience and this will be a regular spot when I'm back in Rhode Island. We had planned to go to Shogun where we had been before but they no longer had sushi, so we asked them to recommend somewhere else, and Ichiban was highly recommended. We had stir fry noodles with vegetables and they were kind of clumpy with a non-descript sauce. The nigiri sushi was good. The pieces were big and tasted fresh. The rolls we had were just ok. The service was friendly and the server let us know that she had doubts we would finish what we ordered and was satisfied with our efforts. As far as ambience it is also nothing special. We LOVE Ichiban! Conveniently located on Gansett Ave, this spot is surely a Cranston treasure. My personal favorites are the steamed dumplings and tartar. DELICIOUS! I tried Ichiban for both their Korean dishes and sushi. As an entree I tried the samsun gan-ja-jang, which consisted of homemade black bean noodles, seafood, and onions and it was delicious! Good portion as well, could've taken it home. I also ordered the spicy scallop roll, which was pretty good. Should have tried a specialty roll as well. There are many options on the menu to try. However, I'd love to try more of the Korean dishes and soups. It's a family-owned restaurant and the service is really friendly. Our server provided us with honest recommendations, which I appreciated. The prices are also reasonable as well, and the space itself doesn't look big on the outside but there are a good amount of seats. I would definitely go back! read more

Avoided the Japanese food and went for the Korean. Got a kimchi pancake (pajeon), jajjang noodles, and the yukgaejang (spicy beef soup with veggies). The pajeon and yukgaejang were SO good. The soup especially. It was loaded with traditional veggies and herbs and tasted like it'd been cooking for hours. The Pajeon was nice and crisp. The jajjang was surprisingly bland. Adding some extra hot sauce on our leftovers seemed to help. I think Ichiban's soups/stews are exceedingly delicious while their other things are hit and miss. read more

From the attentive host and server to the owner coming over just to say "Hi" and let you know that the order of Kimchi you're devouring is actually an old family recipe. This. Place. Is. ICHIBAN!!! My wife and I took a leap and ordered a bunch. The spicy seafood and vegetable noodle dish was like crossing over into a taste bud dimension not known by a human being up until this point. It was spicy, yes, but the broth and ingredients were a PERFECT balance and wonderful compliment to the following plates that we're arriving shortly after. The sashimi and the sushi rolls we chose were like little fish and rice fireworks going off to celebrate a perfect date night!! We were sent off with a fond farewell from multiple employees and further solidifying my opinion for this restaurant being a MUST VISIT SPOT to anyone even thinking about it. Ichiban has been my favorite restaurant since the moment I first tried it about 3 years ago! The volcano roll is the best sushi I've ever had in my entire life!! I love sushi so much and I'm always trying different sushi places but nothing ever even comes close to ichiban. The owners Jim and carol are the nicest and most caring people. They know my order from the moment I walk in & they always remember my family and I, even if we ordered something a while back and can't remember what it was, they always know.
