I love this place. We've been visiting Ichiban for years and I was surprised I had never written a review. The family that runs the restaurant is so friendly. We've been bringing in our young boys since they were babies and we've never felt like they weren't welcomed, they are very kid-friendly. The food never disappoints - from the little complimentary appetizers that they bring in the beginning to dessert. The sushi is always great. The food here is still so delicious. So why the 2 star update? Well, it breaks my heart, but, this place has become Apsara-fied. I really try hard to not judge a place too much on it's clientele, but the staff need to do some serious crowd control. This is what I mean by Apsara-fied..Take a reasonably priced, delicious ethnic food restaurant, add arrogant yuppie jerks with $$ to burn, some booze, and the ambiance is officially destroyed. Went on a busy Saturday night, as I have done before, and was completely disgusted by the yuppie crowd. There were scary euro trash types, a table of 8 that included a space cadet mom, a texting teen, 2 drunk LOUD men, and 4 children under the age of 10 that were wrestling and running and screaming. Ugh. A full table of Brown students that thought it was ok to make loud whistles as if they were at a sporting event, and a glorious young man in shorty shorts who looked like he just finished his lap of "the boulevard" and wanted to stop in, and stink up the joint..Terrible. I have also included a picture of my vinyl seat that was ripped to shreds with stained stuffing coming out. Sorry for the poor quality. I miss the days when this place first opened. Back then it was just some regular people, mostly couples in their 20's and 30's, and hardly any kids. Again, I know it's not right to judge the owners on this, but the owner sure does work that room! He needs to put his foot down, and pay attention to details like the seats falling apart. I know for a fact that if I went half a mile down the road to Marchetti's, the guests would be well behaved, and the furnishings clean and functional. It's called precedent. A suggestion by Yelp to try Korean this week brought me to Ichiban. I saw many photos and reviews and ordered some maki and a bibimbap. A ginger ale, and my bill came to $28! I felt a bit lighter walking out of the place even though a good 90% of what they fed me was rice. Their free sides weren't good. The fermented black beans were very hard. Fish cakes were thin, spongy, and faintly fishy, in a little oily fish like a mackerel, kind of way. Their maki was the smallest I have ever seen. Smaller than Ichigo Ichie! Half the size of Tokyo and Lemongrass. Same price $5.50 a roll for tuna and cucumbers. The bibimbap is a couple cups of rice in a sizzling clay pot. I had to ask where the beef was. It is a beef dish! I had two little pieces you could fit in a teaspoon. Same amount of zucchini. A little more, maybe a tablespoon of the others... and an egg. The waitress said it was authentic. One cow in Korea must feed 5,000 people then! To me a beef dish must contain beef as an ingredient. Pictures look pretty, but it's 90% rice. $12. $35 with the maki, a drink, a nice tip. Last night I told my friends who live in Cranston, and they told me the place was expensive and the portions are small. So much for that. read more

I have lived in Nova Virginia from almost 20 years and have eaten food all over the country. My partner comes from Hawaii and he knows sushi. Ok, so I must way I was very hesitant to come here. But I'm glad I went. The sushi was pretty good for the price, and my girlfriend was happy. I got the Coca Tuna and an avocado roll. The avocado roll tasted fine, just like everywhere else. The Coca Tuna was pretty good too. My only complaint is that the tuna didn't taste as good as it could have and there was so much of it. I also got some green tea mochi (they were out of red bean) which was not very good. First off, it was covered in whipped cream and cheap chocolate sauce. Then when I actually bit into the mochi the ice cream inside was all melted and the actual mochi was thin and hard. The 2 people I was with both enjoyed their food as well. The price is reasonable. Ichiban is a great place for sushi. The staff is always friendly and prompt. The food is fresh and delicious. I love that they serve kim chi while you are waiting. My favorite sushi rolls here are the California Sunshine(Sunrise?) roll - strawberry and kiwi, yum! and the Coka(sp?) Tuna. Very creative and tasty. Highly recommended. read more

I think Ichiban is one of the better Korean restaurants in Rhode Island. They have quite a large selection of Korean/Asian dishes to choose from. They also have some Korean-style Chinese dishes such as Jambong, black noodles, which are not as commonly sold in Korean restaurants in Rhode Island. The only problem with Ichiban would be it's location because it's hard to get there if you don't have a car.. Would have been much better if Ichiban was in Providence rather than in Cranston- read more

We came here after checking out the reviews on Yelp. The place was kind of empty for Saturday night and service was good. We were excited to see so many options on the menu. I ordered the seafood stir fry and my husband ordered the Kalbi beef. My stir fry had tiny pieces of shrimp (frozen type without any flavor) and very soupy. The beef was dry and we could barely finish it. Everything lacked flavor and we will not be coming back. Service was overall very good and the place looks clean and has a good ambience. After perusing Yelp for some great sushi places around Providence, I came across this little gem out in Cranston and decided it was a great spot for a Valentine's Day date. The only negative portion of the evening was my initial impression upon walking in. The decor feels dated and aged, and you can see the wear in tear in simple things like the seats or the physical menus. Seems like this place hasn't changed much since it opened (which feels like a decade ago) and could use a good updating and sprucing up. We went out for dinner the night before Valentine's Day, so there were not a lot of people in the restaurant and it was generally quiet. That said, the food and service were excellent. I confused the waitstaff a bit with my drink order, but they realized what I had done and asked about it to resolve the issue quickly. We didn't order anything too crazy in terms of drinks (my date ordered some soda and glass of wine while I had a couple of whiskey and colas) and the drinks were adequate and delicious. We started with the crab rangoon appetizer (a habit of mine; I always try the crab rangoons). They were fried well and the filling was not only delicious, but they certainly didn't skimp on it. For dinner, we decided to get a few rolls to share: Philadelphia Brothers Ichiban Garden Hamachi Roll Lobster Roll All four rolls were great, but the star was the lobster roll. When they say they use the meat of a full lobster tail, they aren't kidding around. The Ichiban Garden roll was fantastic, and I even had a few pieces regardless of my general non-preference for eel. Philadelphia Brothers is simply their take on a Philadelphia roll which was perfectly fine. As it's my favorite sushi fish, I always get something hamachi and the roll was great. After four sushi roll orders, dessert was out of the question. Service was attentive without being invasive. The waitress seemed to keep an eye on our drink glasses and only came over when we were low on a beverage, and once to make sure everything was good with our food order. I'm not sure I'd say it's the best sushi I've ever had, but it was certainly a great quality and worth the 35-minute drive from Fall River. If I go again, I will definitely get some sashimi to have a better sense of the fish quality. But, for what we ordered, everything was great and worth a revisit. read more

Very good, and surprisingly affordable sushi. We got an assortment of maki and sashimi which were all fantastic. Came with a large group (possibly too large) yet the staff/service was fantastic. The owners even came over to chat with our (hungry & restless) young kids. At the end, all the kids got a cookie, except for my (7yo) daughter because of her peanut allergy. The owner saw she was in tears and personally brought over a persimmon for her. That kind of attention and service pushed my review over to 5 stars. read more

After reading the reviews on here, I can say that I was more than disappointed with my experience at Ichiban. The outside of the building is beat up and looks as if it's been neglected for quite some time. The inside does not look like it's been touched in about 30 years either. The whole place just felt dirty. The food was decent but not anything near the worth the price point that they were charging. My son got a 4 piece sushi set and said that it was just okay and he usually gushes every time he gets to eat sushi. My wife had the dumpling soup and she said that it was okay. The bowl in which the soup was served had a large chip on the rim which had to be noticeable to either the kitchen or waitress. I started with the kimchee pancake which was decent but not for the price. I followed that with the bibimbap which I usually love. This one was lifeless, the meet was difficult to detect and was served in a plastic bowl. It I'm paying $13 for rice, minimal beef, bean sprouts, noodles and chili paste at least have the common decency to put in chinaware. My wife, who is Japanese, stated that the restaurant really made her upset because people actually may think this is what a Japanese restaurant should be like. Based on previous reviews being so positive, unfortunately the people of Cranston/Warwick have no idea what good Japanese and Korean food can taste like and in what way it should be served. When I first arrived here we were given a plate of three different foods. I don't know what they were but all I know is that one was good and the other two were too weird for me. Just to give you my background, I love sushi and have bartended and served at a few of the best places in RI (Nick's On Broadway and Ocean House) so I'm not just a foodie, I've worked around some great chefs and really appreciate execution done well. Here's a story to breakdown Ichiban to you: I was driving down from MA to have a first date with my now girlfriend (almost 4 years later) and we met at Haruki on Wayland Sq. I thought the food was really good and have since went back multiple times. But I wasn't "allowed" to go to Ichiban until my girlfriend knew I was worthy (maybe it was date #6 or 7.) To give you an idea, you can look at sushi ingredients and the color will usually give you an indication of its freshness, flavor, and quality. Every time I go to another sushi restaurant, their fish looks dull in comparison. To top it off, Sushi Chef and owner Jim, has incredible presentation, aside from the great roll combinations they offer as specialties. I've talked to Chef Jim about the sushi documentary, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, and was happy to know Jim had learned in a similar authentic, traditional almost apprenticeship background to sushi. You have to try it out. Aesthetically the place won't knock your socks off, but it's very comfortable and nice inside and the service is always really good. Best sushi that I know of and I've been to Mirimoto's in Yountville, CA, twice. read more

I haven't really been able to find satisfying Korean around Rhode Island, though I guess this place is fine if you really need a fix (I've tried Mama Kim's, Sun&Moon, and Soban, and I suppose Mama Kim's is my best value pick). I had the bibimbap and the seafood pancake, and while both were acceptable, I just wasn't that impressed by the flavor. Nipped in here for a quick lunch. SERVICE - kind and attentive without being over the top LITTLES - love that they serve banchan, a throw back to living with a Korean roommate in college. Love! PRICE - I just moved here from Boston, so I am expecting it to be less expensive. Lunch specials definitely were. A bento box with salad, soup, vegetable tempura, rice and entree (sushi roll, katsu, teriyaki) was only $6.95. Non lunch specials seemed on the high side of major city pricing. Came here on a dead Saturday night. I had some high expectations for this place. Heck, they serve Korean AND Japanese food! How could I resist that combo! The menu was extensive. Ranging from anything to sizzling Korean meat to fresh cut sashimi and hand rolls. But since it was a bit late, I opted for some soup. I decided to try the "Seafood Jjampong" which is normally very spicy. Although I welcome all things spicy, I am not a fan of kim-chi. Fearing that it would be spiced with a heavy amount of kim-chi, I requested that they made the spicy soup "very very mild." We ordered some shrimp tempura to share. Which was deliciously flaky, light and addicting. I only which they had put more than 3 pieces of shrimp and 3 pieces of veggies. Very small. The soup was a flavorful broth with just enough spice. Not overwhelming by any means. I could probably use a little more spice, but hey I asked for "very very mild." It kinda tasted like a more dressy complicated ramen recipe. Kinda made me wish I opted for sushi instead. After a little while, I'm assuming the cook came by to check if the spices were to my liking. Which was very nice and thoughtful. Brownie points for making sure the customers are satisfied! Although my first experience was a bit underwhelming, I still look forward to working through the menu another time. I found Ichiban the way I usually find new places - word of mouth and a ton of yelp reviews. I'm going to say it now, Ichiban was the opposite of what I was expecting to walk into but I'm glad I did. It's definitely not your typical RI Asian restaurant a la the new Asia, Kon, etc where it's all about fan fare and just okay food. This is where you come for kimchi, sushi, and cheap drinks and enjoy it all. The service was great and attentive, the kimchi was spot on, and all of the sushi we ordered (outside of the seaweed roll, that was my bad... I'm not sure why I thought I'd love that) was so, so fresh! I'm happy to be yet another Rhode Islander who brags about and recommends Ichiban. read more

One of my new favorite korean+japanese spots in Rhode Island. You heard it folks, Den-den is not the only place to get good Korean food. Truth be told, I despise pan-cultural, fusion, or any restaurants that feels the need to broaden their menu options to cater to every palate, and the main reason why I liked Ichiban is because I chose to stick with the Korean menu options and was very satisfied with the results. My two favorite dishes were the soft tofu chigea and the special sauteed octopus dish. The tofu soup chigea blew my expectations out of the park as it was served boiling in a hot pot with large portions of tofu, shrimp and it was so hot and spicy and I was crying and drooling from every orifices in sheer bliss. The octopus was also quite scrumptious and the quantity was very impressive. I was less impressed with the initial small complimentary dishes (the kimchi, salted peas and tofu curds), only because of the serving size and the lack of ommhff-ness. I ended up getting the Ja-Jang-Myun, which is decent, but not incredibly memorable and my fiancee ordered a volcano roll...it was ok. Finally, I was a little bit disappointed with the seafood pancake since there were just a few bites of squid per slice and it failed to amaze me as much as the tofu soup did. My husband chose this place for our Valentine's dinner because he had heard great things and had wanted to try a new place. We are huge sushi fans so we have pretty high expectations. He made reservations for 8:45 but we got there around 8:30 and were seated right away. That was pretty much the only good thing about our night. A waitress came by and gave us the four dishes that I guess are given to each table in the beginning. After that, we didn't see anyone until about 25-30 minutes later. No drinks or anyone to take our order. Finally, another waitress noticed we had been sitting for a while and took our order. We got our miso soup before our water, which was brought over by yet another waitress. I still have no idea which one was our actual waitress. The miso soup tasted like it came from a packet, not like we are used to. The sushi looked pretty, but did not taste as fresh as it should. What I love the most about last night (sarcasm) is the fact that a couple sat down next to us about 1, 1 1/2 after we had already been there and was served extremely quickly. Normally if the service isn't that great but the food is awesome, I would return. Not in this case. We will stick to our usual sushi spot. Boo to having a not so great Valentine's Day. read more

Excellent restaurant - excellent food and I've been told by my co-workers that the sushi here is Amazing and the owner has helped train other local restaurants in sushi preparation. This is a family-owned restaurant, not a chain. The atmosphere is cozy and somewhat darker, nice ambience. We went for lunch and we did have to wait a bit but we had some amazing appetizers which came out quickly and we munched on those while waiting for our food. Had a fantastic time and excellent food. Will go again! You should go too. Stop thinking about it and just go. read more

Thank you YELP, this place was awesome. We knew we were in for a treat when we were the only non-Asian folks eating here. Menu is extensive. Interestingly, our kids asked if the fish in the sushi was supposed to be "that color", yes, that color means it's fresh. We tried Korean BBQ, which was excellent. The sushi is by far the best that we have experienced in the Ocean State. Our son had chicken teriyaki that had so much chicken that he just smiled the whole meal. Our daughter had a chicken and rice stir fry fish that was the winner at our table. Homemade real green tea and homemade soy sauce, we were blown away. You can even leave your own chopsticks there in a large display for future use. Service was warm, friendly and fast. read more

Yesterday my husband and I went to Ichiban Restaurant for some sushi. As always we were warmly greeted by Carol and Jim. We sat at the sushi bar which is small and very quaint. We were served 4 complimentary appetizers consisting of kimchi, fish cakes, black beans and something like a pickled slaw. We ordered. the Kamakazi roll, salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, hamachi sashimi, ikura sushi and some saki. Our food came quickly. Sushi was very cold and delicious. I dont like warm sushi. The portions were conducive with the prices. Everything was delicious. Actually better than delicious. There is nothing negative I can say about Ichiban. It is very clean and the service is perfect. Thank you Jim for the complimentary sushi samples. NOTE:: IF you are looking for cheap sushi, then go elsewhere. Good seafood is not cheap. read more

It was my first time there on Friday.. the wait was very short and the owners were very nice and welcoming. I ordered chicken Udon, spicy salmon roll, sticky wings, and a squid sashimi. The wings were smothered in this delicious sauce, almost like a spicy and sweet (not too hot). The udon could've been better... their udon isn't too thick and I prefer the thicker, chewier noodle, but there's might've been a tad too soft for my liking. The salmon roll was also tasty, and the presentation was lovely. Service was overall pleasant, our waitress was very joyful and attentive. Will be returning. read more
