Let me start with READ YOUR CREDIT CARD SLIP before you sign it to avoid double tipping in error! Made a reservation for Monday night at their first seating, 4:00 pm. They don't open the door until 4:00 so getting there early doesn't work. We ended up being the only 2 at the Hibachi table this night. I have to say it's bit awkward to have the chef all to yourselves. They have added some caveats to the Hibachi seating... only 5 split checks per group, at least half your party had to be having hibachi, and a mandatory 18% tip is added to every check, no matter the size of your party. Since we usually tip 20%, this actually works out to disservice for the staff. Then, when we got the credit card slip to sign, there was another place to add a tip and their suggested tipping percentages were on the total of food, 18% tip and tax. Now, to the food! I had chicken hibachi and my hubby had chicken and scallops. So delicious. It's always enough that we have another meal to bring home for the next day. My only real complaint is that they need to work out the tip suggestions on the credit slips since they already charged you a tip. read more

Hey, Japanese cuisine fans, we have a five star winner! Who would have thought? Amazing Japanese eats in Dubuque,Iowa. Based on one lunch visit, Ichiban is the most excellent sushi I have had since living in Alaska for 40 years. The food is what it's all about, but the atmosphere and service were everything I hope for in a high end West Coast Japanese restaurant. Maybe even better, considering these folks have a beautiful old fashioned Midwest Steakhouse style bar in addition to the Tokyo style sushi bar and a teppanyaki dinner room. Damn! This place has it all. My ala carte sushi was PERFECTLY proportioned and as fresh as it gets, short of picking your fish live from a tank. In my recent experience, American nigiri sushi is heading towards oversized chunks of crudely butchered fish on top of equally oversized and poorly seasoned rice balls. Today, I thought I was back in some alleyway Tokyo eatery. Damn near magic. Did I suggest magic??? These folks had FRESH UNI!!!!! In Iowa? Amazing. Perfect experience? No. The tempura appetizer was the low point of the meal, but it's relative. Still pretty good, all things considered, just not the magic light golden crispy tempura batter of my Asian dreams. Ichiban has a small element of Chinese fusion, but is pretty much true to its Japanese theme. The wa shoku will not disappoint. Gyoza are always my tell when trying a new Japanese restaurant. These were excellent little pork morsels in delicate tender skins, most excellently prepared, but may have been a commercial frozen product. The sauce was a Chinese style mustard, excellent, but not a classic Japanese presentation. Still, the plating was far better than most I've had lately, other than my own preparation, of course. I left Ichiban feeling better about the food, sake, and service than I have for ages. This place is a gem. I'm coming back soon to work my way through the menu, especially the nabe yaki udon bowl. As a purist, I totally overlook the 'rolls', but if that's your thing theirs were legion and from what I saw on other tables, quite generous portions. So, whatever you are looking for th the Japanese genre, you won't go wrong with Ichiban. Number one! read more

Walked in with a party of 6 around 4pm on Friday and we were seated immediately in a booth that was very spacious! Our waiter was very attentive and friendly! He complimented us beating the rush. Lol. The sushi was also brought out almost immediately after we ordered as well. The Dubuque fried roll is so delicious! Arizona local here and loved the sushi. I was in town for work and wanted a quick but decent dinner. This place offers both hibachi and regular table service. I was in town for work and wanted a quick dinner so I opted for table side service instead of the hibachi experience. Hibachi is offered in a different room of the restaurant, but there was a lot of laughter coming from that room. So the next time I'm in town, I will definitely try the hibachi experience. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu so feel free to ask as many questions as you need. We ordered an assortment of sushi (depending on the roll, it comes with 6-8 pieces), as well as, ordered a plate of hibachi. The sushi was fresh and had really good flavor. For two people, I'd recommend ordering at least 8 rolls/wraps. The hibachi came out hot and included a bowl of soup and salad. The atmosphere is semi-intimate and the restaurant is clean. They have a bar area and televisions around the restaurant. We happened to visit during March Madness so they had the games playing on multiple screen. Pricing of this restaurant is reasonable and it's easy to find. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting reasonably price sushi/hibachi with good atmosphere and friendly service. read more

Our hibachi chef was amazing. Friendly, fun, even tailored his "schtick" to match our clear love of certain bands. The restaurant is very clean, the staff is friendly, and the food is phenomenal. Portion size is without question worth the price, which for Hibachi restaurants is actually lower than expected. Updating my rating since they have reopened: if I could rate a zero I Would. Previously I gave a 5/5 and praised this place and couldn't wait until they opened.. now I would never go again. The remodel is beautiful but the attitudes of every worker here is absolutely ignorant. We have come twice within three weeks and on both occasions the wait staff was rude and in a rush, they assured me they wouldn't put certain toppings on the sushi because I can't consume it, and they still did but the wait staff never came back until it was with our food. We were rushed out of there as though they wanted to get more people sat. The noise level is so loud from the hibachi side, you can't hear the person sitting across from you. read more

For a solidly midwestern small city, this is a decent place for American style Japanese food. We usually do the bento box in the main restaurant, but they also offer hibachi seating. I like the teriyaki salmon and the SO likes their teriyaki chicken. The dinner box comes with salad and soup (maybe just soup or salad for lunch?), 6 pieces of California roll (fine, not particularly special), 2 gyoza dumplings, rice and we usually also get tempura. It's all good and we leave satisfied with the meal. They've recently renovated their space and it looks really nice. There are booths or tables and it's usually not very crowded at lunch. read more

Food from this restaurant is always incredible. My friend and I go here a couple times a month and always order the jalapeño popper appetizers because they are incredible. The staff is alert so nice and attentive. The restaurant can sometimes be pretty empty but that is rare. Usually it is a very lively busy place with people waiting for a table. The new building is lovely but there is nothing to absorb the loud voices. The server couldn't hear us and we couldn't hear her very well. The tables were about a foot apart so there was no privacy much less social distancing. The soup and and salad that comes with the meal was inedible to me as I am gluten free. No substitute was offered. I ordered water and didn't get any. When the server removed the soup and salad bowls from in front of my husband she nearly elbowed him as she reached for the bowls.... he was still eating from one of them. We had our main courses packaged to go. I sought they will be eaten. There is a great place in Galena, gluten free soup and salad for me. Pleasant staff. Worth the 10 min extra drive time read more

We went last night for a birthday and as always the food was amazing! It was my 4 year olds first time sitting at the hibachi grill and he had a great time! The entire staff is always friendly and it's a great dining atmosphere. Two lovely servers gave him some treats to take home and made his experience well above 100%. Ichiban is usually flawless from service to the actual food. Today, the chicken hibachi was great- per usual but the monster roll was a little warm and had a little too much sauce that overwhelmed the flavor of the actual roll. Service today was very unorganized (one of the server brought two different meals to our table that weren't ours) but they were very friendly in the process haha read more
