Bento box with beef teriyaki and a California roll
    Heather M.

I have been to Galena many times and I decided to give Little Tokyo a try for lunch. The bar area is rustic, and the bartender was attentive and nice. The mai tai was very good. I ordered the bento box dinner portion, which was plenty for two people. The miso soup was delicious! The California roll with 4 pieces was very good. However, I found the steak teriyaki to be somewhat tough (for being cooked medium). I was told the sashimi was very good and fresh. I give this place 3.5 stars. I will try something different here next time I am in Galena.

This is a tough one. The thought experiment is whether the place should be judged for what it is... which is a Japanese-styled restaurant in a tourist town. It's probably the only Asian food around this town, so it needs to cater to the tourist clientele. Are we supposed to be here for authentic? I don't think so. Right? The food is fine, though somewhat lacking in flavor/freshness/texture. The preparation is suited to tourists with fussy tastes, so it's in their best interest to keep it mild, I suppose. The ambiance and the dish flourishes (mini LED on the sushi boat) is like a throwback to Asian restaurants from 30 years ago... which again... if that's the intent, then it's working. The service is good, though I felt a little bit of extra hovering. So that's the thought experiment. Do we judge Little Tokyo against popular tastes or authentic tastes (as if I really know what 'authentic tastes' are anyhow)? I think its website refers to itself as "the finest Japanese restaurant in the tri-states" which probably is a little hyperbole and a little marketing - but I know it set my expectations higher than it ought to be.

Love going to Little Tokyo - my birthday fave. The Romeo and Juliet role and little Tokyo roll are my go tos. They also are excellent at frying things- not heavy or doughy - light crisp. A must hit if you are in Galena

Impressive. Came here for lunch and glad I did. Ordered a beef bento box, came with a yummy salad, gyoza, Cali rolls, friend rice and a perfect strip "steak" + orange slice. NGL, it was great! Good service, nice atmosphere and wallet friendly.

First time here after numerous Galena visits. It was fairly busy on a Sunday evening about 6:30 pm. Drinks were fast coming out, as were soup and salad that came with a hibachi entree. But the entrees took a very long time to appear. The osumashi soup was a bit thin but had good flavor, it's the one with chicken broth, mushroom and scallions. Could have had more of both. Shrimp hibachi had a good amount of tasty shrimp, the veges and fried rice were great. The other entree we got was Romeo & Juliet rolls, with shaved ginger and wasabi. Also very good. Average to quiet noise level.

The reviews looked good, but then we met a couple on Friday evening while out who spoke highly of Little Tokyo! We decided to have dinner there on Saturday night! It was great! The waitress was so helpful. Our rolls were 10/10. It was the perfect anniversary dinner for our weekend in Galena! Though it was busy, we felt like we had privacy to enjoy each other's conversation. The X-O Roll in all honestly didn't catch my eye and didn't look appetizing in the photo on the menu. We trusted the waitress and we were thrilled that we did! It was probably one of our favorite warm rolls we've ever had. Can't wait to go back when we visit next!

Very good sushi. Nice, friendly and responsive staff and reasonably priced meal. We had very little wait time, even without reservations.

Ordered vegetable and tofu teriyaki, but they did not put any tofu in it. The teriyaki was bland and watery. Vegetables were good.

Let me start with READ YOUR CREDIT CARD SLIP before you sign it to avoid double tipping in error!…read more Made a reservation for Monday night at their first seating, 4:00 pm. They don't open the door until 4:00 so getting there early doesn't work. We ended up being the only 2 at the Hibachi table this night. I have to say it's bit awkward to have the chef all to yourselves. They have added some caveats to the Hibachi seating... only 5 split checks per group, at least half your party had to be having hibachi, and a mandatory 18% tip is added to every check, no matter the size of your party. Since we usually tip 20%, this actually works out to disservice for the staff. Then, when we got the credit card slip to sign, there was another place to add a tip and their suggested tipping percentages were on the total of food, 18% tip and tax. Now, to the food! I had chicken hibachi and my hubby had chicken and scallops. So delicious. It's always enough that we have another meal to bring home for the next day. My only real complaint is that they need to work out the tip suggestions on the credit slips since they already charged you a tip.

Hey, Japanese cuisine fans, we have a five star winner! Who would have thought? Amazing Japanese…read moreeats in Dubuque,Iowa. Based on one lunch visit, Ichiban is the most excellent sushi I have had since living in Alaska for 40 years. The food is what it's all about, but the atmosphere and service were everything I hope for in a high end West Coast Japanese restaurant. Maybe even better, considering these folks have a beautiful old fashioned Midwest Steakhouse style bar in addition to the Tokyo style sushi bar and a teppanyaki dinner room. Damn! This place has it all. My ala carte sushi was PERFECTLY proportioned and as fresh as it gets, short of picking your fish live from a tank. In my recent experience, American nigiri sushi is heading towards oversized chunks of crudely butchered fish on top of equally oversized and poorly seasoned rice balls. Today, I thought I was back in some alleyway Tokyo eatery. Damn near magic. Did I suggest magic??? These folks had FRESH UNI!!!!! In Iowa? Amazing. Perfect experience? No. The tempura appetizer was the low point of the meal, but it's relative. Still pretty good, all things considered, just not the magic light golden crispy tempura batter of my Asian dreams. Ichiban has a small element of Chinese fusion, but is pretty much true to its Japanese theme. The wa shoku will not disappoint. Gyoza are always my tell when trying a new Japanese restaurant. These were excellent little pork morsels in delicate tender skins, most excellently prepared, but may have been a commercial frozen product. The sauce was a Chinese style mustard, excellent, but not a classic Japanese presentation. Still, the plating was far better than most I've had lately, other than my own preparation, of course. I left Ichiban feeling better about the food, sake, and service than I have for ages. This place is a gem. I'm coming back soon to work my way through the menu, especially the nabe yaki udon bowl. As a purist, I totally overlook the 'rolls', but if that's your thing theirs were legion and from what I saw on other tables, quite generous portions. So, whatever you are looking for th the Japanese genre, you won't go wrong with Ichiban. Number one!

We ordered the saganaki to start, which was flambéed table side and it was fresh and delicious. We shared the porterhouse and the lamb chops (which were loins, not ribs) and there was an extra $8 charge on shared plates. The porterhouse was very tasty and cooked to perfection. The filet portion was my favorite part. The lamb loin chops were very thick and came with 4 large pieces. Each order came with a side salad or soup, and some type of potato, with many options to choose from. I love the Greek influence on this steak house restaurant. This is a great place to celebrate a special occasion or for a nice dinner.

When I called to make our reservation, I let the staff know we were coming in for our 10-year anniversary. When we arrived, I also mentioned it to the host (the bald gentleman with glasses). He responded with, "Well, your wife is right behind you--there goes the surprise," as if she wouldn't know it was our anniversary. At no point during the evening did anyone acknowledge our celebration or even say "Happy anniversary." I even asked our waiter, Pat M., whether anyone had told him we were celebrating anything. He said no--that no one had informed him we were there for our anniversary. We didn't come expecting free food, dessert, or anything special. But not acknowledging our anniversary at all--especially after we mentioned it twice--was frustrating. Every other place we've celebrated at has at least offered a simple "Happy anniversary," if not a dessert, flowers on the table, or a personalized menu. Log Cabin truly dropped the ball, and I believe the host is largely to blame.
