Got lunch at this charming Japanese restaurant in Galena. It has great reasons to come at lunch. Little Tokyo has a menu filled with bento boxes and sushi. A lot of things to choose from. The prices are okay for the quality and quantity. Bigger place inside than it looks. It's got the main dining room as well as a bar area so there's a choice for the environment you can go to. The menu is pretty big and has more than just sushi or whatever. A lot of the familiar items. There's also some pretty great drinks too. It's about $9 for a pina colada. This is a pretty big one with a cherry and pineapple slice. It's got a few lunch combos. We got the one with 3 rolls. It's about $17 to get your choices. We got it with the avocado, oshinko, and vegetable rolls. Quite filling. The rest of the menu has great stuff. Has to be the best Asian restaurant around here. It's closed Tuesdays. Little Tokyo is a delightful little place at the end of the Main st. One side is more of a bar and the other side is more sit down eating. They have sushi, hibachi and Pad Thai. There is a lot to enjoy on their menu. We were seated quickly and given plenty of time to look through the large menu. My group enjoyed sushi, fried rice, Pad Thai, egg rolls, soup and other appetizers. The Spicy Girl roll was very good as was the fried rice. The portions are very good in size so come hungry! I have been to Galena many times and I decided to give Little Tokyo a try for lunch. The bar area is rustic, and the bartender was attentive and nice. The mai tai was very good. I ordered the bento box dinner portion, which was plenty for two people. The miso soup was delicious! The California roll with 4 pieces was very good. However, I found the steak teriyaki to be somewhat tough (for being cooked medium). I was told the sashimi was very good and fresh. I give this place 3.5 stars. Been a while since I've dined at LT. the inside has been redone and booths were installed to make it cozier. Nice touch ! The food was better than nice, it was excellent! The service was great also. This is a tough one. The thought experiment is whether the place should be judged for what it is... which is a Japanese-styled restaurant in a tourist town. It's probably the only Asian food around this town, so it needs to cater to the tourist clientele. Are we supposed to be here for authentic? I don't think so. Right? The food is fine, though somewhat lacking in flavor/freshness/texture. The preparation is suited to tourists with fussy tastes, so it's in their best interest to keep it mild, I suppose. The ambiance and the dish flourishes (mini LED on the sushi boat) is like a throwback to Asian restaurants from 30 years ago... which again... if that's the intent, then it's working. The service is good, though I felt a little bit of extra hovering. So that's the thought experiment. Do we judge Little Tokyo against popular tastes or authentic tastes (as if I really know what 'authentic tastes' are anyhow)? I think its website refers to itself as "the finest Japanese restaurant in the tri-states" which probably is a little hyperbole and a little marketing - but I know it set my expectations higher than it ought to be. read more

First time here after numerous Galena visits. It was fairly busy on a Sunday evening about 6:30 pm. Drinks were fast coming out, as were soup and salad that came with a hibachi entree. But the entrees took a very long time to appear. The osumashi soup was a bit thin but had good flavor, it's the one with chicken broth, mushroom and scallions. Could have had more of both. Shrimp hibachi had a good amount of tasty shrimp, the veges and fried rice were great. The other entree we got was Romeo & Juliet rolls, with shaved ginger and wasabi. Also very good. The waitress was so helpful. Our rolls were 10/10. It was the perfect anniversary dinner for our weekend in Galena! Though it was busy, we felt like we had privacy to enjoy each other's conversation. Our first stop during our day trip to Galena, recommended by a retail worker a few stores down. We were the only ones there and the walls kind of looked like they were in the middle of remodeling. Our waiter was very nice and quick to serve us. Here's what we ordered: Philadelphia roll: Not great. It had this smoky flavor and I am not sure if that was intentional or not, but it left a weird taste in my mouth. Edamame Clear soup x2 California roll: Always a safe bet and they did it well The wait staff was a little awkward with us being the only ones in there - could have maybe turned up the music a bit! Before my Yelping days, long before the pandemic, I'd been to Little Tokyo as a stop on a haunted pub crawl. The story was something about a little boy on fire as I recall, you know, the good stuff. But on my recent visit, the spirits were calm. We stopped in on a Monday night, with most of the town dead or hiding away from the lingering winter chill, and were seated right away. Any time you go to a new sushi restaurant, you know there is going to be a significant amount of time spent poring over all the options, and so it was here. But we were neither rushed along nor ignored as we narrowed down our choices. Everything we got - avocado salad, the salmon lover, a few rolls, and drinks/dessert - was really good. Fantastic!!! Stopped for lunch and got the beef bento lunch box. Ordered the beef medium rare and it was as soft as butter. It was cooked perfectly and so delicious. The pot stickers/gyoza (spelling) were so tasty. I also ordered a spicy mama roll. It was crunchy with just a hint of spice. I can't wait to go back. I expected this place to be good for Galena, but not great all around. It's easily the best bento box I've ever had. Super attentive service. My beverage was never less than half full. Our visit at Little Tokyo was definitely one of the best meals we enjoyed while on an anniversary trip to Galena. We began our experience with Mai thai cocktails. They were fruity and boozy, just as one would expect from a Mai thai. For an appetizer, we enjoyed their vegetable tempura. We enjoyed an array of broccoli, sweet potato, and onion with a slightly sweet dipping sauce. It was solid. Though not my favorite portion of the meal. My dining companion and I then ordered their Romeo & Juliet and Tiger Rolls. Both were perfectly rendered and 100% delicious. The fish was fresh, the sauces were great, the rice was perfect, the rolls were perfectly evenly sliced (no ridiculously large end pieces!), and stayed together wonderfully well. Honestly, I can't think of a single thing that would have improved them. The menu is very robust (something for everyone). The prices are average and the service was friendly and prompt. Whoever thought we would find the absolute best Japanese restaurant in Galena. This little gem is located on main street. They do not take reservations, unlike most of the restraunts on Main St , but we had no problem getting a table on Friday night at 5:45. We started with chicken gyoza. The gyoza were the best I've ever had. The moist chicken had a slight sweetness, which made them outstanding. We shared the Chicken Teriyaki dinner and Yaki udon with chicken. The dinner included miso soup and a garden salad. The dressing on the salad was light and refreshing. The dressing was a house ginger and was so good. The Chicken Teriyaki was accompanied with white rice and rested on top of a variety of vegetables. The portion was larger than expected and the teriyaki sauce was sweet, but so flavorful. The Yaki Udon had plenty of vegetables and the noodles were prepared perfectly , so the noodles were not chewy. All servers were wearing masks and our server was so attentive and nice. This is one of my favorite sushi places, bar none. Sushi is one of my favorite foods and I'm pretty picky when it comes to what I like and don't like. Some local restaurants to us have huge rolls that miss the mark when it comes to flavor and freshness. I never have that problem with Little Tokyo. It's a two hour drive for me to eat here and it's worth every second in the car. Some standouts I've loved are the sweet potato roll, the mango shrimp roll, the crazy daddy roll, and the sweetheart roll (which I order every single time no matter what else I might be getting). The service can be a little slow and the restaurant layout is a little bizarre, but the food is always absolutely top notch. read more

Little Tokyo in Galena, IL, WAS a pretty good Asian restaurant... but not anymore. My husband's shrimp dish was absolutely disgusting. The shrimp were NOT deveined and were cooked BEYOND rubbery, almost rock-like. The waiter, who mostly could not understand nor be understood, was to replace his order with beef, which was supposed to be very fast. After the first ten minutes, we had begun to tell the waiter to skip it and just bring us a bill for the drinks we'd received. He kept saying chicken was coming fast, something we NEVER ORDERED. (Although we asked for the manager/owner multiple times, we kept being told "No manager ".) Twenty minutes later, he still hadn't put in the new order. Meantime, my food (which I had hardly picked at due to my husband having nothing) had become cold; my hot tea never refilled. We, again, asked for the drink bill. The unmodified bill arrived after 30 minutes or so, quickly followed by THE WRONG FOOD. We brought the bill to the front counter, again stating we were dissatisfied and wanted to speak with an owner or manager. I spoke with someone, who identified herself as the manager, on their phone. She argued that, since the restaurant had "costs" in making our food, we would have to pay the bill in full. Then she tried to insist we should, at least, pay for half. We stood our ground and got her to back down. We left, frustrated and hungry, but with the promise that the owner would call me to discuss our experience. Thankfully, Galena has no shortage of excellent restaurants; so we went elsewhere for a LATE, but delicious, dinner. We have phoned and stopped in many times over the last 7 weeks to try and speak with the owner; we have never been able to speak with him/her in the nearly two months since. Although any place could have an off night, this much time passing with NO RESPONSE is UNACCEPTABLE. THIS was LOUSY customer service... to say the LEAST. We have ZERO intention of returning, and highly discourage other diners from subjecting themselves to this venue. There are far better choices in our town. In response to your reply: "First,you both eat soup and salad" Yes, at this point, we had no idea how wrong this meal, which was a couple's dinner TOGETHER, would turn out. "when we bring shrimp hibachi and bento box,you complain shrimp cooked over,then we try to ask you want change something different,your husband pick steak ,it take some time,we are no buffet,we can't give you right away" It shouldn't have taken 20 minutes before the replacement order was started! "then you eat your bentos,your husband eat rice and mix vegetables when you wait steak,you eat half plate your bento and your husband finished fried rice and mix veggies" I said I PICKED AT MY DINNER. The rest is untrue. My husband didn't eat ANY of his veggies, by the way. That's not the point. "then you try to pack rest to go" The waiter packed it, not us; we left it. "and ask talk to manager,then my employee try call me,you tell me how you don't like it,then I said it is ok if your husband complain his shrimp is no good,I never say you have to pay your whole bill" Yes, you did... he said/she said. "I told you ,we can remove your husband's meal from bill;you just need to pay your food,because you eat half,then you ask your husband,then he said if you want me pay bill,l will give you 1 star,and never come back,this is your choice ,that is no problem" True. "finally,I give you solution is remove both meal just pay for your drink" This was the solution MY HUSBAND AND I INSISTED ON, not you. "this is best way I can do" This could ALL have been avoided. I waited SEVEN WEEKS before posting the negative review. THE BEST you could have done was have the owner reach out to make this right. We tried, over and over, by calling and stopping in to make contact. It's LOUSY customer service to avoid the customer complaint. Well despite passing by here with my motorcycle friends in the past before the pandemic I was finally able to try this Japanese restaurant for the First time. Very good tempura udon. Sushi was a bit odd to me but was delicious too. Why only 3 stars was because the waitress dis not understand when I ordered another sushi appetizer. I told her 2 times and said she understood but clearly not. I had addressed it to her about my disappointment. Also place was not ada or handicapped complient. Other than that food was great but service was subpar and not handicapped accessible for my mom who was my guess. Interesting to see a bonsai decoration on my sushi.
