I am updating my review and giving this place a 0. I was recently dined in, and the experience was horrible. First, customer service could be better. My family waited so long to get our food. Some of us were eating, while others waited for more than 30 minutes for sushi rolls. The rolls were much smaller, with more rice than the filling and topping. The "sushi chefs" were a joke, taking their sweet time and not caring that customers were waiting for a mediocre sushi roll. The waitress was rude, threw utensils on the table, and provided no napkins. I don't know if this place changed owners, but the service and food are no longer how they used to be. Service was quick and easy, nothing extraordinary. They were very fast though. We had three different rolls. They were good and spicy but at the same time a bit subpar compared to other sushi joints. I noticed their menu contains a lot of this "crunch" topping which got old pretty fast. 3 rolls split between 2 people was very filling though. The pictures of the rolls made this joint look really enticing but it's not really anything that special. If you do go, I don't imagine having a bad roll but I also don't think you'll find an amazing one. This place was a 5 start before but the lady name Stephany G that works there doesn't have any training on customer service. Due to covid I asked that to separate each of my orders and label them. She said she couldn't do it and wasn't willing to label an order that I made for my company. This will be the last time me or my team member to ever come here during Covid19. So my husband and I both were servers and bartenders prior to our careers so we are understanding of lacking service due to being understaffed. However, last night that was not the case. We got there around 7, sat ourselves, got our own high chair, and the menus were literally tossed in a pile on the table. They eventually came to take our order and it seemed as if they were annoyed that we came in. I double checked the time to ensure it wasn't close to closing but 7 is peak dinner rush especially on a Friday! Our appetizers came out with our grandmas meal and then the other 3 rolls came out 30 minutes later after they asked us 2 times if we had ordered a different roll. When the first roll came out the server again tossed the plate onto the table and it hit one of our appetizer plates. My husband and I pre-bussed all the plates and moved them to the end of the table where they sat for the entirety of our meal. The other 2 rolls came out shortly after by a different server and usually you would ask if the table needed anything else. She just walked away and my husband went up to the sushi bar to ask for wasabi and ginger. Again, we could understand if they were busy and understaffed but all 4 servers were standing up front on their phones and the family behind us had also made a neat stack of plates that were never cleared. To end the night, our server ran our card, brought back the copy to sign, and placed it in front of our 15 month old. We made the joke that she would sign for the table but our server was already on her way back to talk with the other servers at the front podium. As we left, not one of the 4 people standing up front looked up from their phones or turned outward from their talking circle to say goodbye or thank you for dining with us. It was comical how bad the service was and it wasn't just us because my husband and I were laughing about it in the parking lot as we got the baby in the car seat and another family overheard us and agreed that it was also terrible for them. Its a shame because the food was actually really good. Train your servers better, if I could go back I would have taken the tip and given it to the chefs and busser as they seemed like they were the only ones working. read more

Wow! Out of towner with limited options here in Prunedale. I took the risk & tried out this "hole in the wall." What a gem! Got the valley roll. Not disappointed is an understatement. This roll rocks! It's HUGE! Very generous & fresh fish portions. All the ingredients were fresh & flavorful! The service- well, let's just say that I was going to take it to go, but felt so invited into the warm, friendly, & friend-filled service, that I had to stay! I highly recommend this place. Everything was delicious! The Udon tasted very authentic! Excellent Spicy Tuna and Caterpillar rolls. The Teriyaki Tofu came out sizzling on the skillet and was nice and simple and seasoned wonderfully. The chef has great energy and positive attitude, seems very friendly. It's a bit pricier than other sushi places I've been to, but since it's just a 2 minute commute from my house, so it's worth it. The place does look a little under decorated at the moment but I don't mind it at all. It leans towards a clean modern look rather than cluttered and tacky, and it's bright and pleasant. Most importantly, I'm so excited there's a local place to get sushi now!!! Id love for this place stick around. Can't wait to come back. read more

After we heard they finally have their liquor license we decided to give them another try. So glad we did! We got here right before the dinner rush last night and got seated right away. They have also improved on the decorations and got a couple of flat screens. They have also improved their menu with lots of very reasonably priced rolls and bento combinations. They now offer Sake Bombs at 6.50 each instead of having to buy the beer an sake separately . I had their Chicken Teriyaki, Tempura and Goyza Dinner Bento. I really like how they have changed their salad mix to spring greens instead of the standard iceberg mix and the dressing is very tasty . I love that they give you a big fat Onion Ring in their 8 piece Tempura serving. The dipping sauce for the Goyza is awesome! Hubby had their 101 Roll. It had seaweed salad on top with a variety of sauces and he liked the hot sauce best. Their service was excellent! The girls always checking on us and bringing our check promptly with out having to a ask for it. Pretty sure this is our new go to for Sushi. We'll definitely be back! read more

Who knew Prunedale would have good chinese food AND sushi?! I seriously would've never thought to come up this way for sushi until one of my coworker's told me about it. I was skeptical since most people think Samurai in Salinas is the best... difference of opinion there.. but I was pleasantly surprised. The rolls were about $12-13 each vs the $15-16 rolls in Salinas. My fiance and I can easily finish 4 rolls at Samurai, Kokororo, or Harumi. We got the shrimp and veggie tempura appetizer, plus 4 rolls. When the rolls came out, we immediately thought "oh my, we're in trouble"... the rolls were pretty big. I can't remember all the rolls we got, maybe the Raiders roll, crazy horse... some had jalapeno kicks to them and lemon slices. Overall, they were all good rolls, and service was excellent. I would definitely make the drive to Prunedale for sushi again over Samurai. Spent around $70 for 2 people - tempura + 4 rolls + tax/tip. read more

We love the food at Ichiban! They are our family's go to comfort food restaurant. We especially enjoy the rolls and the hamachi kama.

I've always loved this place. The portion sizes are huge, so you really feel like you get what you pay for. The wait times usually aren't bad, especially considering busy nights, and of course considering COVID. As long as you're patient, and don't mind waiting about 20-25 minutes for a walk up order, you'll leave happy. read more

Not sure what happened to this place but it's gone downhill. It used to be our favorite and worth the drive. Now, the service is horrible. They don't answer the phone, when you get there to order, they're not busy and the food still takes 40 min. A large sashimi used to have 35 pieces, today we didn't even get half. The dragon roll was small and gross. They used to dress us the to go items, now they are bare and sad. We paid $50 just for those 2 items.Never again. Don't waste your money, time or gas. read more

We ordered a large order of salmon sashimi which came with about 25 pieces. It was pretty good especially for the price. One thing it was a little chewy I think it just came out of the freezer. Extremely poor service. And there were a lot of servers working that day. They were huddled at the front checkout register. The floors were dirty when there was plenty of people to clean. We had to get up to ask for napkins, for our check, to go boxes, and also take our check to the front. Disappointed. Will not go back. read more

This is my go-to sushi place for many years! servers are friendly. I feel bad seeing all these changes for worse! Sushi chefs talk without masks or mouth guards while making sushi, considering this food is not cooked or heated at least. The liquid cleanser is sprayed forcefully all over the table with potentially contaminating the soy sauce via their spouts. Sushi size has significantly shrunk and price has gone up. Tried to get take out. Waited at the door for 15+ minutes being told told to wait three times. I tried to ask for a menu but was refused. Waited for over 20 minutes to try to order take out. Apparently they don't have menus (I could see two on tables). One menu was in use on a table. The other, I pointed and asked twice in 25 minutes to see, was not in use. One staff member said they wanted to keep it. With TWO menus in the entire restaurant!! I left, and told them that I did not feel confident eating from a restaurant that could not supply menus. Have eaten/ordered here about a dozen times before. Very poor service. Take out has been missing items we paid for each time. Seems like they desperately want to go out of business. I will not be spending a cent more here; will drive into Salinas for sushi as restaurants who do not treat the customers like trash. read more

I have been here twice in the last two weeks. It's not a regular stop for me as far as eating out in Prunedale, however the last two times the service has been less than satisfactory. I'm not sure what's happening with the waitress staff but I hope the owners will look into that. I receive my meal and then 10 minutes later my companion received theirs. When we asked the waitress about it we could not hear nor understand what she was trying to tell us, it sounded like someone with a takeout got our meal? As a compensation we were offered another salad? It was very disappointing. Last week when we were there we just had to keep asking for everything we needed. The waitress seem to very inexperienced, was not friendly, and was not good at checking to make sure we had what we needed. We had to keep asking her for help. Definitely coming back again. If you are a serious fish lover, I mean the freshest kind, raw like sashimi, Ichiban Sushi is the place. Growing up in Taiwan island, we were spoiled about seafood. Fresh seafood were abundant and can be found in any local markets and there were plenty of authentic Japanese restaurants serving sushi. Now living in Monterey area, you would think that sea food is easy to find. Well.. we have been to most of the Japanese restaurants in the area and I am sorry to say most were less than acceptable as soon as we sampled the sushi rice. If you have to ask what is the difference between sushi rice and regular rice then you ought to try the other place first to appreciate what Ichiban has to offer. Back to Ichiban, this is a nice little restaurant nestled in the Prunetree shopping center in Prunedale. The place has become very popular since it open about a year ago? The fact that its business is good means the fish is fresh. There are limited seating with a lot of take out orders. So be patient! On a Friday evening we were warned about the 45 minutes wait for one order of chirashi. It was worth the wait! For about 20 dollars, the chirashi came with a great variety of sashimi on sushi rice, a small garden salad and miso soup. Let me tell you the portion was very generous, more than enough for two of us. We had so much rice left over our chickens had a feast. The sashimi were excellent. The cut again very generous, chunky, nice cut, fat.. Most of all fresh, superior quality. If you crave seafood and would not want to drive to San Jose Tomi, then this chirashi will satisfy the most discriminating seafood lover. read more

After going here for the past couple of years because they had the best sushi in the area. I am noticing that the portions have been significantly smaller than it user to be at least 1/4 less than it use to be. I went there for the sz and great tasting sushi, but now I'll be going there a little less now. read more

The food is amazing! The sushi rolls are unique and delicious. Customer service is outstanding and never disappoints. I've tried many sushi restaurants on the Monterey bay and Ichiban Sushi is by far one of my favorites. Definitely give it a try! read more
