The cuts were generous and incredibly fresh. The Tekka Maki rolls were rolled perfectly, with a great bite and, again, very fresh. We were also treated to dessert and chose the fried green tea ice cream. It was definitely firm, which makes sense since it was fried, but fried green tea ice cream. Came in for some teppanyaki solo last night, was sat with a big birthday family, and had a great time! Classic experience, same as all the big brand places. One little extra thing I did absolutely love, was that the fried rice was automatic and you didn't get up charged for it, and even better they gave you chow mein noodles as well! Came by for a late dinner after work and was craving some beef. Ended up ordering the sukiyaki noodle with rice. The broth wasn't too thick or heavy so it felt like a lighter meal. The glass noodles and tofu were great contrasting textures. The beef was also cut sufficiently thin to not be too chewy. One tip would be to temporarily take out the meat just as the residual temperature finishes cooking it. Throw the meat back in for a quick reheat before eating. It helps to prevent the meat from getting too tough. Since the broth was light, I was able to finish most of it along with the rice. Mix em together and you have a nice porridge! I wish there were more vegetables inside though. Comes with a small bowl of miso soup. Since it was already a late night meal (around 9pm), the restaurant was basically empty except one other party that arrived after me. But the restaurant was receiving phone orders and takeout during my meal. Relatively clean inside! The windows are strangely blacked out so you can't see inside the restaurant. I tried to go here while in town for work even though the reviews were hit or miss. I walked in and waited for 17 minutes but no one offered to seat me or say anything. Then when I was walking out, I was followed to my car by 2 of the men that were in the parking lot and watched me get out of my car. If you're in the Salinas area, this is a great spot for teppanyaki! I was in town for a work trip, and this place is conveniently located near the hotel I usually stay at. We both went with the teppanyaki dinner, and it did not disappoint. The meat was cooked perfectly, and the chef added a fun touch with his humor throughout the meal. Beer is nice and cold! One thing to note--the lighting in the restaurant is extremely bright. It's almost blinding. They could definitely benefit from dimming the lights a bit to create a cozier, more relaxed ambiance. I really enjoy coming to Fujiyama for several reasons, so I will try to sum it up in this review. Fujiyama is a great place for a nice family outing in Salinas. There is plenty of parking in this lot and you have the option to sit in the hibachi or sushi section. The chefs will be sure to make you laugh with their amazing tricks like a steaming onion train and impressive broccoli tosses ( I caught mine). The portions are huge and you'll definitely have to take some leftovers home. They have really neat deals that I'm sure your pocket will love as well. Came on a Friday evening with a group of 11 to have the teppanyaki experience and celebrate some special occasions. Policy is that the entire party has to be present to be seated, with a 15 min grace period for your reservation time. The restaurant is sectioned off with a wall into a regular dinner and bar area on one side, and then down a narrow corridor, the teppanyaki side. The room we were in had zero decor and all the blinds were closed, so the ambiance was lacking. The soup was a tasty broth with mushroom slices & green onion. I waited & waited for salad that was supposed to come, but cooking started & I just took the miss to continue with the meal progression. The veggies were flavorful--a mix of zucchini, broccoli, onions, & mushrooms. The noodles & rice were lackluster--basically just the taste of soy, butter, & garlic. The fried rice only had a scant amount of eggs as an addition, no other mix-ins. The proteins were awesome, very well cooked & tasty. I tried the streak, filet, shrimp, & scallops. The 2 sauces were also delicious. Others in the party enjoyed some other kitchen & sushi items as well. Chef Paul was great!!! He was fun, funny, lively, personable, and did some different tricks versus the typical shows. He was invested in making sure we enjoyed our food & experience. We had very good customer service. Staff was attentive, helpful, & took photos. Our celebratory guests of honor all got balloon hats & vanilla ice cream with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, & a candle. Birthdays get sung to, and when the ice cream comes out, there's a moment of colored lights that flash to loud club music. Depending on your mood, this can either be received as fun or obnoxious. There were too few staff and sushi chefs, so we had to wait a long time for food. While the servers were friendly, the fish was not fresh, and the sushi rice had no proper seasoning and was given in excessive amounts. I also found it problematic that they charge a $2 penalty per piece of leftover rice, yet serve so much rice to begin with. Additionally, they used too much MSG in all the dishes, which left an unpleasant feeling in my mouth and throat after eating. I was visiting Salina's for a softball tournament. We stayed at hotel near by and saw a restaurant with a hibachi grill and decided to eat there. We were in the mood for sushi and decided to try a new spot. This place offers hibachi but we wanted sushi. Our server, Bryan, sat us and took our drink orders. We ordered Sapporo draft beer and he offered "large or small", where we went with large. Shortly after he brought out one large pitcher of beer and one large bottle of Sapporo. Needless to say we were very confused, and I think he was too. We ended up keeping the pitcher and sent the bottle back. We had a lot of questions about the rolls and asked for white tuna with the sashimi dinner. Bryan checked into and answered all our questions. We wern't impressed by the roll options on the menu and were struggling making a decision. We were craving a roll with tempura inside but a mix of fresh fish on top and surprisenly they didnt have much to offer with that combo like most places. We opted for the Crazy Friday, Hulk, and Angel rolls. The soup served with our meal was disgusting! Literally was the worst miso or whatever soup it was we've ever had. It tasted rotten and smelled like old seafood. We asked Bryan to please get it away because it smelled so bad. The rest of the food came out pretty quickly and thankfully tasted fresh. The Angel roll was the best out of the three rolls. The sashimi was fresh where the white tuna I wanted was delicious. We wern't super impressed with the Hulk or Crazy Friday roll. The Crazy Friday had more flavor and was decent, but the Hulk was boring and wouldn't order again. Eventhough we could tell our server was probably newer he was really nice, really tried and gave us good service, which we appreciated. We both ordered Miso soup, which was perfectly adequate, but nothing to write home (or here) about. My rolls were fine. The rice was good, but the general flavor was uninspired. BEHAVIOR FROM THE MANAGER WAS RIDICULOUS I decided to take my boyfriend, my pastor, and his family to eat here for my birthday. We read online prices were set for adults (40) and kids(20). Once we got there, we noticed a smell of sewage, which we didn't care about, but also there was a height chart that said "under line eat free" and "over (certain) line eat 20." When we got there no one showed us the lines and sat us right away. The waiter was extremely sweet and mentioned it was his first month there, he was extremely welcoming and told us both kids would eat free because of age and my sister would pay 20. Our first problem was we expressed my sister had a strict diet and asked if she could order something specific, our waiter asked the manager and our waiter came back and told us my sister would have to pay full price (40) for the buffet even after we were told she would eat for 20 but we did not intend for her to eat buffet due to her diet. We didn't mind it and went on with our night, after we ordered all our food and it came in. Then, AFTER the food came in the manager told the waiter only one kid would eat free and the other would pay 20 dollars after ordering everything. We ended up getting confused because we were not informed of this previously. We again didn't mind it, until we decided to order something for the child who was eating free and the check came in and we got charged full price for the plate we ordered for the child, we were extremely confused and asked what was going on. The manager came to our table and said if it was a problem she could take our plate back, we were in shock and told her okay and to take it off our check. We were disappointed in how we were treated by her, we loved our server, and he tried his best to help, but we were extremely shocked by the behavior and treatment given to us by the manager. A random choice for a sushi craving, chosen for the reviews on Yelp. It seems they're mainly hibachi, but judging by their menu, they'll make anything you want. The Sushi for Two is made for two who are ravenous, a generous sampling of fish and a basic rolls. Didn't blow my mind, this platter is just fine for its price point. They do make a delicious Chicken Katsu Don. The chicken and egg are flavorful, and it's all quite light and fluffy. The chef and wait staff are great. The food was good, and we loved the show. My downfalls for this place is their unwillingness to cater to their customers. We had two guest show up surprisingly to have dinner with us and it was a hassle to ask for them to order more food. We would be paying the restaurant obviously. It just doesn't make you feel welcomed as a guest at a restaurant and it's awkward. Thankfully, the chef made it happen for us. Also, the main guy in the front isn't very friendly. He was imposing all these rules on us. The restaurant itself could use a makeover. It also smells a little funky when you initially walk in. It could be the mop water they use to clean, but definitely need something to fix the smell. Lastly, they over charged us someone else's bill "accidentally."
