Ordered coconut shrimp, was fried in old dark oil and when I took a bite it was tough to bite. The moonlight roll was fantastic. It was made of thinly sliced cucumber filled separate with 4 piece tuna and salmon. Then doused with Mirin for a sweet finish. Very impressive. Chef Robert Irvine would have a field day with this place the way he like to simplify menus! The menu is overwhelming; Thai, Chinese, Japanese, pther Asian dishes. Six of us dined there; 2 of us ordered Chinese dishes and two couples chose to share sushi boats for 2. We were served the Chinese and finished before either couple recieve their sushi boat. 45 minutes after we were done one boat arrived, the other boat a half hour later. The last couple served were compllled to eat quickly as we were long finished and ready to go. Our server (charming and very good) said the sushi chef prepared the sushi incorrectly and blamed her for improper instructions. She said she would have to pay for it our of her own pocket! I never leave reviews but I had to in this case. I feel like it is a case of the good the bad and the ugly. My husband was impressed with the wonton soup. I will start with that because it is true. I ordered the crab ravioli and the Ichabod roll they both said crab as an ingredient. What they had instead was Kani. They should specify that because imitation crab is not the same as crab. The ebi tasted so much of lemon I couldn't even taste the shrimp and it was watery. The shrimp tempura I ordered tasted so much like fish I had to check to see if the shrimp was indeed that and not fish. I enjoyed the all you can eat sushi menu for lunch Thursday. The appetizers were great, especially the crab ragoon. My favorites were the Philadelphia roll with smoked salmon and cream cheese and the phoenix rolls. I have been twice with a year in between visits. I was by myself the first time and had the General Tso's chicken. It was delicious. The portion was large, and it came with choice of white, brown, or fried rice. After that visit, I thought this would be a great place to bring my wife. That opportunity presented itself this evening. We began with the fried calamari, which is served with a chili lime sauce. The squid was lightly breaded and crispy. It wasn't as tender as I hoped it would be, but it wasn't chewy either. I'll put it somewhere in between the two. I had the sesame chicken and white rice. The portion was big enough for us to share. It was all white meat, which made the dish tender and juicy. The breading was light also, so it didn't leave me feeling stuffed even though I cleaned my plate....with some assistance from my wife. My wife had a sushi combo platter. She had the Phoenix roll (9 pieces), the honey roll (6 pieces), and the shrimp tempura roll (6 pieces). That was a lot of sushi. She wasn't sure about the first two rolls, but our waitress did a great job of explaining what they were. My wife loved the sushi and was very happy with the recommendation made by our waitress. The service was great on both occasions. During my solo trip, the restaurant was packed. But, I was seated fairly quickly. There was no wait tonight. Both times, the waitresses were attentive and kept the drink glasses full. Located in the heart of Newtown, Ichiban is an excellent choice for dining out. Came in to ichiban today with high expectations, and sadly, left feeling quite unsatisfied. The food took a very long time to arrive, and our waitress was extremely blunt and unhelpful when ordering. Ichiban is a family favorite in our house. Since I found it years ago when we visit mom and dad it's become the kiddos favorite! With their all you can eat lunch special, no one can outdo the establishment with better prices or better quality sushi. The all you can eat prices are in effect from 11:30-2:30 and I recommend you do not come on a time crunch. Remember to be patient as all the employees are doing their best. For me, coming here wasn't my choosing but joined my husband and his coworker for a business dinner. We ordered a medley of entrees. I ordered two rolls that had spicy tuna with avocado and a spicy eel roll. That was "ehh"... Not bad but not great. Way overpriced for such little of a presentation. I myself ordered a spicy chicken and prawn dish with mixed veggies and chow mein noodles. The flavored were bland and hardly spicy but the veggies were cooked perfectly. My husbands coworker ordered this medley of different seafoods that consisted of prawns/scallops/calamari.. Cooked perfectly but lacking in seasoning. My husband ordered a wonton soup and we all had it family style. The wonton soup was also bland until I added some and then it became more interesting. After two years I decided to give this place another shot. This time I had a much better experience. I liked the texture of beef tendon and I would recommend it to my friends. The salmon sashimi was excellent. I then came back a few days later and had fish in oil and duck. Another Ok restaurant located in Williamsburg's New Town. Honestly though this is probably one of the better "Japanese" places in Williamsburg although I feel like its Chinese inspired foods are the selling point here. I'm not a huge fan of Chinese food and haven't ordered it here, I usually stick with their sushi which usually get smashed on Yelp, lol. Anyway, its right next to the movie theater and Sweet Frog's and once inside it does look a little fancy. The set up is actually nice, there bathrooms are usually clean as is the rest of the place. I've seen this joint busy and I've seen it dead. The dinner crowd is obviously the busier time of day to visit and as with anything in this area during the summer months it gets quite packed. Food and service really make a restarant more so than the decor for me. And for Ichiban, the service is usually what disappoints me more so than the food. I find that uncomfortable ethnic treatment that is oh so common in many establishments here. I don't like pulling the race card but if you aren't the typical tourist and Wburg ethnicities you pretty much get treated like crap. I've been ignored, rushed and once had this lady totally bypass me and my table despite us obviously trying to get her attention. This last time I went was sadly the best in terms of service. Our waitress was somewhat efficient but still seemed bothered by our presence and I felt like she was quickly trying to take our order to move on, even though there were only two other tables occupied and three other waitress around. Hm. I usually go for the Sashimi here which is pretty nice in size with all your typical raw cut varities. The raw pieces were fresh tasting and nicely arraged. I'm a fan of their Age Tofu here as well, it's probablly one of the most beautifully presented that I've seen. The shumai tastes like it was poured out of prepackaged box. Like most Japanese places you get a choice of miso soup or salad. The miso soup is so-so with not a lot of tofus so this time I went for a salad. The ginger dressing was ample and tasted good but I found it a little disturbing that obviously canned smushy corn was used. I picked some out. My sister ordered Chirashi and enjoyed it, she really like the crumbled seaweed and bonito flakes used atop here rice. However, I found it strange that their Chirisha was deconstructed and not put together in a bowl like most places. Overall, due to the lack of good sushi places in Willimaburg I will be back but it will be a long time before I do because of the crappy service. It'll probably be another year or so before I do and I'm glad that there are better options in Newport News. read more

I had heard about Ichiban, but this was my first opportunity to try it. Wow. Food was top notch. The menu is amazing--it has so many offerings! The Gyoza dumplings were fantastic, the sushi was amazing, and the Broccoli with Chicken was the most delicious & flavorful version of this dish that I have ever had. Prices are extremely reasonable for the high quality food. I look forward to going back and trying more of their many options! I highly, highly recommend Ichiban! read more

Update: I've gone to the all you can eat sushi a few times now. There a pros and cons... if you are a lover of good and timely service, don't come close. BUT the reason is because everyone knows what a good deal it is and so everyday it is jam packed with people. Normally it takes about 25 minutes for food and 15 min for drinks. Not the place to go if you need to get back to work. But if you aren't in a rush get a wine and enjoy! Also the owner is a stickler if you don't finish. I get it, it's how they make money, but I only ever 2 rolls and I didn't finish 2 pieces and they were going to charge me $2 even though I was already paying and had no intention to order more.... Im shocked this place has such a low rating! I would expect at least 4 stars. I am a sushi addict (like probably could go 5 times a week) and I love this place. I love that I can get wonton soup and sushi. They service at dinner time is really great and the booth seats our supper comfortable and private. My husband always gets the panang curry and I get sushi. We love that they offer both of our favorites and we don't have to argue about where to go for dinner. I have never written a review about a place, but after eating that food I just had to. Sushi is my all-time favorite food and this completely satisfied my craving it was delicious. I think I eat the food so fast I forgot what it taste like, but I know it was good! I ordered the Seattle roll, salmon avocado roll, California roll, and the shrimp dumplings. I visited this restaurant for the 1st time and was not impressed with the service of the manager. Our waitress was very nice and accommodating. We had the all you can eat sushi price where you get charged for not eating every piece of food. No problem until there was a hair in my husband's food. At this point I had finished my food and he requested to not be charged for taking his home since he had to wait and was no longer hungry. The manager was very unprofessional with our server. She was loud and refused to help. Not once did she come over to apologize and we were still charged for taking food out of the restaurant. Had the situation been rectified we would have returned so needless to say we will not be returning only because of the manager's attitude. read more

When we were seated at a table we were immediately given some hot towels for our hand--a nice touch considering it was so cold outside. We ordered a couple of appetizers: edamame, coconut shrimp and vegetable dumplings. The edamame and shrimp were good; the dumplings, underwhelming. For my entree I selected the shrimp teriyaki with fried rice and hot and sour soup. The soup & rice were included with the entree, something I found pretty surprising. Most places I've been charge you an extra couple bucks if you want fried rice instead of white/brown. Everything I ordered was tasty and arrived expeditiously. The server was friendly and attentive. My parents and I went here on a Monday after Christmas. The place was packed!!! We waited over 20 minutes to be seated, there was a lot of confusion as the hostess was also waiting on people at the bar. We had the nicest waitress, she gave us great suggestions! I had the chicken pad thai and my parents got the all you can eat sushi (which you have to eat the rice as well or they charge you) - with appetizers and salads! Their house salads are delicious, not your plain jane Japanese restaurant salads. You must try the sweet potato roll! Highly recommend if you're not in a rush! read more

There is no way to describe how awful the server was to me and my companions. I came into the store for lunch in a powered wheelchair. When the doorway was a little too narrow to get thru the woman who greeted me got upset I was bringing in the chair. Granted there was a small scratch to the doorframe. I ate lunch with no trouble and went to the ladies room before I left. I came back to find the hostess trying to drive my electric wheelchair (I left it behind because the hallway to the bathroom is inaccessible to wheelchairs). Let me repeat: the hostess tried to drive my wheelchair without me present. You never. Ever. Touch a person's wheelchair without their permission. If my friends hadn't been there she would have tried to maneuver my chair without me, which is utterly unacceptable. On TOP of that the hostess was belligerent with my friends, who tried to explain why she should not touch it. I came back to find she had said some pretty uncomfortable, ablest things about me when I was gone. I was pretty horrified at how awful this woman was and would suggest anyone with wheelchairs to reconsider going to this space. The hostess in question was passive aggressive, rude, and should be ashamed of her awful, ableist, snobby behavior. And I guess the sushi was fine too. Wasn't worth the $50 spent, I've eaten at many asian restaurants. Soup was waaaaay to salty, appetizers mushy and had that freezer taste. Family and I was trying to decide on dinner and we like to try new restaurant. So we came across Ichiban. There price range for there food is okay the lowest price I seen was $10.95 highest was $65 for a meal. I had got the Ribeye w. black pepper sauce and it's with your choice or white, brown or fried rice, a soup of your choice or a salad really good $16.95. Then I got a dessert a Temper mango Cheesecake $5.95. Are server said she never seen anybody order dessert before. And I asked her how long you been working here Jennet she said a few months. It took them at least 15 mins to bring it to the table. But it was delicious. Are server was very friendly and nice instead of giving her a 15% tip I gave her 23% tip she would always check on us see how we was doing joking around with us and very pleasant.
