Yesterday, March 5th, 2026 I took my cat Mr. Meowgi into the Idaho Humane Society Medical Center to be evaluated due to a serious respiratory issue that he has been experiencing. I explained my concerns about Meowgi's persistent cough and Doctor Patricia Pence was very thorough in her examination of him. The care and treatment that Meowgi received from Doctor Pence was nothing less than excellent. After the appointment, Doctor Pence contacted me twice to check on him and to give me an update on the results of his bloodwork and X-Rays that were completed. She suggested that we put Meowgi on a diet as he is a hefty boy and she explained to me that the medication that she was prescribing would very possibly cause him to gain extra weight, which may cause diabetes. Dr. Pence listened to me and I know that she took every word that I said to her seriously. I genuinely feel that she does care deeply about the animals that she treats. She also made me feel valued because she was not arrogant or pretentious in any way. If you are looking for a caring veterinarian that will do all that she can possibly do to take loving care of your animal, please make an appointment to go see her. I had a terrible experience with West Vet after they charged me almost $300 to do absolutely nothing with my injured cat. I took our 1yr old dog for a Wellness and vaccines to the Humane Society in Boise. (We adopted from there a year ago and had a wonderful experience. The vet was an elderly lady that couldn't physically do an exam on my 80lb dog. Patricia Pence, DVM. She almost seemed intimidated by the size of my dog and often the vet tech stood in front of her to "protect" her. I told her that my dog's ear was very dirty all the time and she shakes her head while walking. She physically couldn't look in the ear or do a proper exam. It got to the point of me asking for some tissue so I could clean the ear to show her the brown stuff. She offered some ear cleaner but didn't think necessary. (Again without looking at the ear). I was very confused with that appointment and quite shocked with that experience. The next day my dog was sitting next to me and I took a flashlight and I can see that her ear canal looks red and inflamed. Doesn't look good. I send them a message and told them that. I was willing to bring my dog back. Instead they said they prescribed the ear cleaner. I picked it up and started using as prescribed. Two weeks later I can see my dog is not better. I scheduled with another vet outside of Humane Society, had to pay again for another exam and they looked in her ear and looks bad! They also took a sample to look under the microscope and sure enough has an infection and was prescribed antibiotic. Very frustrating but if first vet would actually look in the ear she could have seen it. Hate to say this but if vet can't physically do a proper exam maybe it is time to retire. I ended up spending double the money with another exam, cytology, antibiotics plus my dog was suffering! read more

While they may provide quality care at a reasonable price, they failed to follow up on vaccinations that were scheduled and on their records. This left our pet without the completed series, so they wanted to start all over again. Overall waste of time and money, so I won't be using them again. read more

After my 18 year old cat passed away in June, I wasn't sure if I was ever gonna be ready. Then some feral kittens showed up- and I realized just how ready I was. Not only did these folks let me borrow traps for those little ones, but we went to the main adoption center and met Willow (Moira at the center). She's made me her human in less than 5 hours, and this shelter made her adoption easier than anything ever. Super clean facility with excellent folks who seem to really care and aren't just about charging crazy prices like some I've been too. They make it so the pets can actually be rescued. read more

I've had three experiences with this location. The first was a cat adoption; adult male cat. Thankfully they make it clear that you can return the cat within a certain timeframe if they don't fit well within the household and not only did the cat not bond well with the cat I already cared for but he was spraying and there was blood in his urine. So that was concerning. I immediately returned him. No issues. No refund due to the length of time I had him. The second experience was a cat adoption; male kitten. No issues. Adoption process was simple and the kitten is now an established pet in hour household. The third experience was a phone call. To preface; every single experience has involved interactions with staff who seem to hate their job, hate their life, or both. The phone call today was an effort to seek information regarding the treatments for dermatological allergy symptoms in cats and the assistance they may provide to financially struggling households. The receptionist at the clinic never gave me her name and after putting me on a brief hold gave me an answer that was not to my original question. After clarifying what she said so she knew I understood her, I restated my question. Her answer was "no we do not". Nothing further. I'm not a stickler regarding customer service because people suck sometimes so not everyone deserves kindness and respect. However I've noticed over the years, with these three interactions, that the staff here don't seem to really care....about anything. It's depressing enough having animals who need care and a small budget in which to get it done. So to have to reject a family in need would be harder, I'm sure, however compassion for the families in need coming to this business for help just doesn't seem to be there. We're all out here just trying to to our best to do good in this world, it's hard, I get it. They are not humane I called two weeks begging for them to help My ESA animal at bird street shelter,my 13 yr old ESA dog was sick and yes I actual had her that Long! I explained I was Dissabled only on SSI couldn't afford to go to another place. They lie say there busy when there not! Give you the run around will tell you to go to another Urgent care animal hospital. There is no other place in the valley that has payment plans for people with no credit and there is no other place with affordable prices. My fur baby didn't have to suffer and I watched her suffer! After reffering me to west vet I got the same response, it's all about money with these people, they just said sorry our hands are tied maybe reach out to local churches. Today 7/20 my dog passed away and I had no where to dispose of her body but was told to take her to the old shelter on Dorman street in Boise,when I got there I spoke with a lady in back parking lot explained what happened, she told me to go around front with my deceased Dog and someone would help me. They walked by but never once helped or bothered to open the front door. She was not just a ESA dog actually recommended by a local Doctor in the valley,she was part of the family! When the people who work there are old and sick, and broke I hope the insurance company tells them all sorry our hands are tied but calls themselves HUMANE. They are nothing but about money IDK why there even was a secondary shelter built just a waste of ementy buildings with barley any DOGS a waste of taxes and Grants. It would of costed nothing to have moment of empathy and compassion.This company don't deserve even zero stars - Negative stars. Sorry My hands are tied!!! I want the whole treasure valley to know what kind of people are running these places! My daughter adopted a puppy on Friday, Oct. 20 (her name was Spot there). In less than 24 hours it was obvious the pup had kennel cough. Because the Humane Society vet wasn't available, my daughter took the puppy to a vet who confirmed kennel cough, prescribed antibiotics, and said to come back if things don't get better in a couple of days. Two days latter, the little dog was much worse, listless, and had stopped eating. My daughter took it back to the vet, who after more expensive tests, diagnosed the puppy with pneumonia. My daughter called and spoke with management at the Humane Society, to let them know about the puppy's sickness, which she obviously left the Humane Society with, and to see if anything could be done to assist with the large amount of money she'd spent to save the dog. She was told that there was nothing they could do, that the puppy had been with them less than 24 hours and so had not had a chance to be evaluated or treated for any health concerns. There are two big issues here: 1) It's unethical for an organization called Humane Society to not evaluate, treat and care for an animal prior to letting it be adopted. 2) I absolutely believe there is something they could do to compensate my daughter for the significant amount of expenses she's incurred, due to their failure to care for a sick animal. They could easily refund her the adoption fee, or offer complimentary veterinary services. I'm really disappointed by the lack of ethics and accountability demonstrated by the Idaho Humane Society. read more

I cannot believe the amount of love that your staff has for not only the animals you all care for, but for the owners as well. Last month, we had to bring in our dearly loved pup (she lived a wonderful life...a full 15 years). I called in before to ensure we brought her to the correct location. I was told where to go, etc. As soon as my family and I walked in (in tears), the staff knew exactly who I was and didn't even say a word. One gal in particular, just motioned to me to come on in and she would take care of everything. She asked if I wanted our pup's remains back, to which I stated we did not. She made me feel a ton better by letting me know that you spread the ashes across the mountains. I love the thought of our furbaby being out there amongst the trees and nature. So my friend and I visited the humane society yesterday. It was my first time and I wanted to go see all the lovely animals and yes they were well taken care of and although not a place where any animal wants to be, because they want their forever family so they can enjoy life the way it should be. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about each one and we got to know some of them a bit better. Their kennels were clean and you could tell the animals felt comfortable. I know that my next dog will be a rescue as they deserve so much better then to be in a shelter. I wish I could take one of them home but I travel too much and I have a lovely boxer that takes a lot of my time. He loves other dogs but 2 is just too much at this time. Yesterday our new Multipoo puppy Kai Ziggy got out and ran faster than we could, until he was out of sight and lost. We searched for hours without finding him, so my mom called Animal Control to help us find our puppy. They came out and searched for hours, and found him! They gave me a call and met me at my home with our scared pup, who was safe and unharmed. I am SO grateful for Animal Control's help. It is so cold out right now and he somehow made it across Ten Mile Road, he would not have been able to make it back across safely. Their knowledge and experience in knowing where pups like to hide and how to catch a scared dog, was invaluable! I am SO grateful for their time and commitment to help keep our puppy safe, so we now have our puppers back with a happy ending. They made not only my family, but my co-workers and all my friends and others on social media that was helping me post messages about my lost dog - have a great day and week. I can't explain how disappointed I am in a place like this that has shown even on TV that they get donations for helping people when every time I have brought any animal, including my own or people I am trying to help with their animals. Even in emergency situations have been turned away for lack of funding. Thank god for nomadic critters they have helped so many times in so many ways! Unfortunately because of big name company's like the Idaho humane society they can no longer continue their non profit group because they can't get any of the help they need to provide help for low income and homeless pet owners that desperately need the help because all of it goes to crappy places like Idaho Humane Society. I have tried giving IHS the benefit of the doubt so many times. I really have. But they're extremely dishonest. First was a dog of my sister's that had to be surrendered. My sister got a free dog from Craigslist & he ended up biting her when he got ahold of a bag of cookies & she tried pulling them from his mouth. My mom even showed them a picture of the bruise he left on my sister's hand when she surrendered him. Not only did they put my MOM'S name on the no-adoption list for not being able to pay the surrender fee for my SISTER's dog, but they failed to mention Jack's food aggression and bite history TWICE. I check their page religiously for a dog that would suit us, so when I saw Jack on their website, it was mentioned about him needing training, but conveniently nothing about his biting history. I noticed he was off their website one day, but then showed up again 2 weeks later. Still nothing about his history of food aggression and biting others. I then adopted a cat from them about a year and a half later. In his description, it said he was a transfer from HJC & that he was returned twice for "differing" reasons. That should've been my first clue. I tried for several months to work on that cat, but he kept peeing all over everything (after he sprayed all over the place at the last house we lived at). He was incorrigible with being let outside. I wanted him to be strictly indoors, but he made it impossible. He would yowl, bug, pee, and destroy everything. So we decided to let him outside. Then he started killing a bunch of birds in our backyard. He was overweight, that didn't stop him. He even had a bell on his collar. Again, didn't stop him. When I returned him back to IHS, I SPECIFICALLY stated he would be best suited as a barn cat. When I asked them about him, I was told he was adopted out as a house cat & when I told them about his history with killing birds, the person I spoke with asked if I was referring to the "overweight black cat", as if to insinuate I was lying about his killing birds. I guess they don't understand what good hunters cats can be, overweight or not, bells around neck or not. We recently had an incident with one of their fosters, but I have been speaking back and forth with someone at Idaho Humane Society about it and have decided that because of their kind and quick responses, and the fact that they resolved this particular complaint, I will be giving them more stars. If you're sensitive to equality in good customer service don't go to this place. My husband went to take our two year old to find a dog upon arrival he wasn't greeted by an apparent employee who he asked for directions to reach the front entrance she was very dry and unwelcoming. Upon his entrance the front desk clerk was also dry and unwelcoming and didn't seem interested in helping him when asked what the protocol was to being there for the first time. The rest of the employees throughout the place was the exact same way. The visitors were more friendly then the employees. I would hate to say the disposition these employees had towards my family had everything to do with our ethnicity. I would hope not! We will definitely be taking our dog adoptions options somewhere else. The employees need to be trained on sensitivity and better customer service! No one should walk into a place ready to adopt a dog to be treated with disregard by the employees who handles it all. Our beloved family member was injured and our vet was closed so we chose to bring him here for care. After assessing his injuries and giving us a quote of over $2100 my husband was looked at and told that it looked like affordability was an issue and offered us papers to sign to surrender him. Never once was anything from us mentioned about cost. We chose to proceed with care as cost was not an issue to have our family member taken care of. 28 hours after he was admitted they still had not began any treatment. Frustrated, we called our regular vet who was able to get him in right away for surgery and do both surgeries at the same time. So we took him to our regular vet. 25 hours AFTER our family member had left this facility they called my husband to update them on our boy. They did not even know he was gone. Sad..... read more

Long story short, the antibiotics, the spay, and then a half mastectomy, and this dog is such a nice dog, I am keeping her after all. The vet at IHS helped us save her life. I am so grateful for the humane society.. We adopted our fur baby in beginning of January and fell in love instantly.. She was a bit shy at first but she came around very quickly. She is very cuddly and loving. She didn't get spayed before we adopted her, so they let us bring her back to get spayed.. unfortunately she didn't do very well with this surgery as she stopped eating and drinking. We sadly had to bring her back two times and second time she ended up having a 3 day hospital stay. The doctor called us everyday and gave us an update and kept us informed the entire time she was away from us (which was hard).. and by the 3rd day she was ready to come home. She's feeling so much better and back to eating and drinking and settling back into being home. The humane society helped us pay for the stay because they were dedicated to helping our baby as we adopted her from their shelter. And I will be forever grateful.. Would recommend reading the below if you are considering adopting a cat. In January of this year I was looking to get a cat and picked one out off of the Humane Society's website. It was advertised as a 6 year old domestic female long-hair that was cute as can be (aptly named Cutie Pie). I went in that weekend to meet her, and asked some questions about her health. I was assured that she had no health problems beyond a cold she had gotten in the shelter. It wasn't that I would have passed on her if she had health problems, but just wanted to know upfront. I was advised to bring her back for a check up in November, and to take her for a shot the following weekend, but otherwise that she should be a healthy cat. After getting her, she was a very pleasant and affectionate cat, but lethargic. I initially assumed this was just a mellow personality. About a couple months after getting her though, she started having problems with eating. First with dry food, which I just chalked up to being picky. When she wouldn't eat her wet food she usually scarfed down though, I knew something was wrong. I took her into the humane societies vet who informed me she had a "crappy mouth", and that she was missing most of her teeth and the ones she had were badly infected. He said she would likely need her teeth pulled due to gingivostomatitis, but that cats typically do well after that procedure. I was told that this may be caused by an auto immune disease, and we ran tests for FIV and Feline Leukemia which came up negative. He wanted to try a steroid and a long lasting antibiotic first prior to pulling her remaining teeth. Around this time I was suspecting that she might be quite older than 6 due to the lack of energy, and condition of her mouth. She improved for about a month, before showing signs of not eating again. I followed up with a different vet who informed me the condition is very serious and is likely caused by either Bartonella or an auto-immune disease. The vet told me that she would need all of her teeth pulled and to be shaved since she wasn't able to groom herself. The vet also said she thought she was around 12 years old. Three days later, I was informed after blood work came back that she had stage IV kidney failure, that she wouldn't survive an operation, and she has maybe 3 months left to live at most. If you know anything about kidney failure in animals, this is not something that develops overnight. Needless to say, adopting an animal that you think is 6 years old and healthy and finding out less than 6 months later that she has less than 3 months to live is heartbreaking. What I would have appreciated from the Humane society is more candor in my adoption. Things along the lines of "her records list her as 6, but she may be older than that" or "We tested her for rabies, but didn't run blood work to asses potential kidney issues" would have gone a long way. This was my experience with the humane society; I'm not saying they are completely at fault in this situation, I get that the records on some of these animals may not be the best and they can get a tremendous amount surrendered at a time. But, I also think they could do more testing on these animals to give adopters a more clear picture of the state of the animal they wish to adopt, or at least let them know upfront what testing they might want to get done independently at a vet. I'm happy I adopted my cat. From what I do know about her history, it seems like she fell through the cracks most of her life, I'm happy to say during her final months there was someone who really cared for her. Understand though, if you are going to adopt that the picture presented to you may not be what it is in reality. read more

I had my dog Gizmo in for a dental a few weeks back and I have struggled trying to decide whether or not to post this. I love the doctors there and would give them 5 stars but they obviously don't train their techs very well and some I dont think are even out of high school yet and shouldn't be allowed to work on someone else's pet. When I take my pet in to the vet they are scared and out of their element anyway, but he was actually getting to the point that it wasn't traumatizing him and now all that progress is gone. I want to know the people I am trusting my baby with know how to take care of them and actually care about the animal. They shaved my dogs paws because of cheat grass which would have been fine but they butchered him. This is a dog that has problems with his feet anyway but they cut into his poor feet and in between his toes so bad (mind you it wasn't just one paw, it was every single one, you would think they would see that they were doing something wrong and not continue to keep butchering him) he couldn't hardly walk. He had to come back for antibiotics and pain pills. He was in pain for 2-3 weeks. It was brought to their attention and I still haven't heard an apology or even heard from management. Had there been some follow-up with me after this happened I might not be looking for a different Vet Clinic. I guess my next step is to reach out to the veterinarian board and put in a complaint. What my dog went through I would not wish on anyone elses dog. I don't know what is going on over there but service and quality of care is definitely not what it used to be. read more

This was the best experience I've ever had at a vet especially with a semi-emergency situation. I was a walk in that had driven 40 miles to get there. By the time I got there, they were not taking anymore walk in's for the day. I called & explained my situation, they told me it would be awhile but they'd squeeze me in. I was so grateful!!! While waiting in my car because of covid, they maintained contact with me keeping me informed of when I would be seen. There were several people involved in the care of my cat & the financial side of it all, everyone was so kind & genuinely cared! It was very comforting to receive such incredible care!!! They also work on a sliding scale fee & if qualified can accept payments. This took such a huge stress off of me as I do not work and had to borrow the money to cover it. Their prices are beyond fair & unbelievably lower than other vets!!! They were so understanding of my situation, Thankfully the bill was extremely affordable. I would & will recommend them to everyone! They offered the BEST care, prices & experience I've ever had at a vet!!! Plus their facilities/services helps to give strays/abandoned animals the care they need to be healthy & finds them homes through their adoption program. Our rescue pup suffered a leg injury last fall when he tore his CCL (a dog's ACL). He was not able to walk on the injured leg or put any weight on it at all. We took him to the Idaho Humane Society where we were greeted with a compassionate and helpful staff from day one. They worked with us to figure out the best options. We met with Dr. Rosenthal to discuss surgery that involved an in depth TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy). After a consult with Dr. Rosenthal, we felt comfortable and confident that our dog would receive the procedure from a doctor with experience and our dog's best interests in mind. The surgery was completed in late December. Fast forward 4 months later, our furry family member has healed completely and is back to enjoying life as normal.
