A rude and unprofessional cashier yelled at me due to her mistake I inserted my credit card to pay for grocery, the machine failed processing it, and the cashier told me to try again. I tried again and it worked. The cashier yelled at me Don't remove credit card early. I didn't remove it but she yelled at me that I removed my credit card. Apparently, the machine malfunctioned. It was an extremely nasty experience. I went to the store every weekend, she was always there and always rude. She always showed superior attitude over customers. Every time I bought grocery at the store, the cashiers always excessively charged on me, I had to tell them the correct prices, they checked those prices, and corrected the prices. I'm not happy . How did I spend $45 and walked out with 1 bag of groceries. I come here to get my dogs food because they have the best prices on that. But I only purchase (7)dog food, (2)collards, (3)yogurt, (3)avocado, (1)bag of bagels and (2)sharp cheese. These prices are killing me. A casher overcharged me for an item, made nonsense, and rejected to refund. I went grocery shopping in this store. A cashier overcharged me for a grocery item which was plum. Its unit price was $2.99/lb but $3.99 was printed on the receipt. The weight for the plums that I purchased was 0.69lb and $2.75 was charged by using $3.99/lb unit price. I told the cashier that the unit price for the plums was $2.99 not $3.99. He looked at the receipt and said it was for lettuce not for plum. It was apparently for plums and I told him again that it was for plum. He again made the sense that it was for lettuce. I told him again that it was for plum not for lettuce. He made another nonsense that he charged $2.75 not $3.99. I told him again that the unit price for the plum was $2.99 not $2.99. He again made the nonsense that he charged $2.75 not $3.99. We repeated the arguments and then he said he would call the manager. The manager came, I showed the receipt, and the manager confirmed that the charge was for plum, changed the unit price from $3.99 to $2.99 and refunded me. I told the cashier what I told was correct and he said yes. Every time I went grocery shopping, unit prices on the price tags were different from the prices in their system and I always told cashiers and they refunded. What was ideal is that they had something I was looking for and what was advertised via Mercato when I had called. I was actually surprised as it's hard to find. That's why 2 stars instead of 1. What was not ideal was that the other that item I had already purchased on Mercato they not only did not have, but when I spoke to a manager he did not know what Mercato was. He kept saying "I'm only the night-time manager in broken English. Call the day-time manager." So why are you a manager? Update your availability and inventory via 3rd party sites and educate your MANAGEMENT on that third party sites exist in 2022. That's like calling a restaurant and the manager says "what's Door Dash?" I had to go thru 3 employees on the phone kept getting transferred and when I finally asked to speak to a manager he didn't know what the site was and putting any responsibility and my issue to "call back tomorrow to the day time manager." read more

UPDATE/4 YEARS LATER: I would have been happy to leave my old review as is. But things have gone downhill. While they did overhaul the place and really clean it up during the pandemic, their prices have since gone wayyy up. UP to the point where they are comparable to the Gala store around the corner. But they are still less, so good, right? Unfortunately not. I went in the other day and bought a number of items, including a mixed spring greens for $7.99. But at the register it was rung up for $10.99. I told the cashier that was crazy, and it was marked "$7.99". He changed the price and then was told no it was $10.99. I said "too much, take it back". He agreed it was far too costly. He rang everything else up, I paid, and left. Upon getting home I went through the receipt to find he had STILL CHARGED ME THE $7.99 for an item he knew I wasn't taking!!! I called the number on the receipt and got a "whitebox" answering machine. i.e., no outgoing information, nothing saying it is Ideal Grocery. Thinking it was the wrong number I looked it up, and got the same anonymous voicemail. I never got a callback. Ok, so the next day I go in with the receipt and speak to the customer service person who tells me that "the woman that handles returns will need to check the video tape, and she will not be back until Monday." WHAT??? I've been a customer there for years, and they are insisting to rip me off, and keep me ripped off until they feel like rectifying their own mistake? To make matters worse, I went back to the salad sections and sure enough, the box was indeed the $7.99 I told them in the first place. So I took it over to the manager (who long knows me) and explained it to him. Yes, he did rectify it. But not anywhere near graciously. He held on to the salad box, holding it behind himself, and asked if I was going to buy anything else. My son said "hamburger meat", and I remembered that you really can't buy any meats in this store (see my original review, or many others!). So I told him we would not, and to please hand me the salad. Which he did, but not graciously. BOTOM LINE: The cost difference between Ideal and Gala is not as much as it once was. This market is most certainly NOT ideal. I went around 3pm today and picked up 3 packs of beef short ribs to cook for my family for dinner. After cooking the meat, I serve it to my family, and here I am with a mouth full of tiny bone fragment specks about to break my teeth. I inspected all of the meat and every single piece was absolutely FULL of bone fragments. IN THE MEAT. How am I supposed to serve this to my father and the kids?!? If I received this quality of food in a restaurant, it would be sent back in a heartbeat. I return to the store at about 7:30pm, with my specimen in a ziploc bag and my receipt in hand. The man at the meat counter tells me he does not speak English. I find a manager and explain my issue. We walk to the meat department, I show him which meat I purchased, he opens a fresh pack and tells me it is grease/fat. I show him the bone fragments in the fresh pack and also open my ziploc bag and show him the bone fragments in the meat. He cannot believe it, but offers to refund me anyway. I will also add that the man at the meat counter is now helping a woman who is speaking English. We go to the customer service counter and as he refunds me, I tell him to check the rest of the meat to prevent future lawsuits and he tells me next time I should bring all of the meat back so he can inspect the packages, though I've already told him that I cooked all 3 packages. I'm sorry honey, but there will not be a next time. ***FORGOT TO MENTION THIS ALSO HAPPENED LAST SATURDAY...*** Only a few bone fragments, same cut of meat, but life happens so I let it go. But again a week later?? Unacceptable!!! When I posted on my personal Facebook earlier this evening, another local mom told me that she has recently bought chicken here WITH THE SAME BONE FRAGMENT ISSUE. I will not purchase meat from this shop again and I advise anyone who shops there to be extremely cautious. Not only is this a huge hazard, but Manuel, the manager, apparently does not give a shit. I just had a really bad experience @ this store, and I will never go back. I stopped there, as a convenience, to pick up some last minute items. I was disappointed with three (3) of the four (4) items I purchased. The 1st was the 2.5 gallon container of Mazola corn oil. It was the last one available and when I arrived at home to start preparing dinner, discovered that the container had been previously opened. The 2nd & 3rd items were pints of Haagen Daz ice cream, both had defrosted and then been re-frozen, they had crystals in them throughout. I was looking forward to ideal opening since it's walking distance from my home, making it very convenient to run out and grab something. It started off well enough, but then there was a recurring problem... Expired food. I've seen expired meat on the shelves before, but recently I also came across molded raspberries, which prompted me to write this review. I'm not talking about 1 or 2 packages of molded raspberries. I'm talking about Every. Single. Package. I needed them for a recipe, so I rushed off to stop & shop where I found plenty of mold-free raspberries. The next day I once again trekked to ideal because I forgot soup at stop & shop. Out of curiosity I checked the raspberries. Still the same moldy fruit. Delicious. It's a shame because the cashiers are all friendly & helpful, and the market is very clean. Too many times I've seen expired food stay on those shelves for DAYS. Oye. I hate to write this update, especially since it's so nice to have some new businesses in the Baldwin area. I've bought milk here that curdled in two days and a bottle of Coke (which had an expiry date of March 2016- soda is supposed to have an expiration date a lot longer than that!) which had almost no carbonation to it upon opening it the same day. The only reason this place is still standing is because of the Latin American landscapers and contruction workers that have no option but to buy this terrible attempt of Dominican cuisine. This place has no standards and has made me sick twice the only reason I eat it is because I boss buys it at lunch time since we work on a route and most days we're close by. I have yet to taste rice done the right way from here. The stews are greasy and bland and one of the servers (a middle aged woman) will never do what you tell her to or serve you exactly what ordered. I hope for my health's sake that this place closes soon so my boss will have no choice but to fetch us lunch elsewhere. read more

We live around the corner so we were really looking forward to this market opening. We went the first week and loved it. But... On Saturday the 12th we went for our weekly shopping and noticed the primo sausage was expired on the 7th and still on the shelf. Today 2 days later the same sausage is in stock. This makes me question the freshness of the meat dept items and the deli meats. I might still go because its a nice store and 2 blocks away, but I will not be purchasing any perishables. Felt like a kid in a toy store when I went into the place this weekend. The variety is spectacular. The Latino/Asian/Indian products found here make life so much easier when trying out a new recipe. They have items here that the big mega chains would never bother with. The meat dept also has cuts of meat you also don't normally find in the big boys. I never knew that Adobo came in so many varieties. Prices are fair for these items, many of the basics I'll continue to take advantage of the bigger stores. Dinners will step up a notch now that I know Ideal is here. Keep up the great job read more

I wanted to give all 5 stars based on my 5/12/18 visit, but the seafood worker robbed the final star. I just wanted my talapia and be on my way, not be flirted with and made to feel uncomfortable. The deli gentlemen was absolutely wonderful. He made great eye contact as I was trying to decide what I needed.( Instead of just walking away) He also prepared my order AND CAME TO THE AISLE WHERE I WAS TO HAND DELIVER!! I give him high praise for going out of his way. The cashier was so friendly, he was great at small talk. My total was $200 or so and he took his time to explain how the free items offer worked and was patient while I ran back on the floor to grab my free paper towels. He deserves a high five. He motioned to another cashier to please grab an extra cart as I had so much to be bagged and transferred. I brought my own reusable bags; he carefully bagged everything , putting heavy items on the bottom. (You'd be surprised how often this common sense tactic is ignored) Although I was prepared to handle loading my car myself,he helped me anyway and IN THE RAIN. KUDOS, to this young man. Be careful with this place 3 times I bought meat in this store that was not fresh, I kept giving them the benefit of the doubt because they are new but after the third time I went back with a pound of spoiled roast beef for a refund and to complain, and the manager tells me there is nothing wrong with the meat. grand opening sales the prices were too good to be true ! that because it is too good to be true , they advertised a higher end ham, turkey and cheese at a unbelievable low price i purchased some last monday bring it home and begging making my lunch for the next day only to be hit with a smell not familiar with Boars head , i then taste the ham ( honey ham) only to realized that i was film flammed by the deli , that when they offer the premium brand and sneak in the cheap stuff ! needless to say i would not be returning there any time soon , if you can't be honest with your customers on a grand opening sale , how would you treat your customers on a daily basis ? you need to remember it's more than just a sale it's a service you provide , up your game even if you have to raise the price there are plenty of other markets around waiting for our money read more

Since the new management has taken over it's been the worst experiences. Been going to this store since they first opened but since the new management all they care about is money instead of all the mistakes they are making and fixing it properly .. since the new management went to the deli ordered low salt turkey and they gave me ham got back home called and they said nothing they can do bc it already left the store ... another incident got delivery they did not bring my case of water called the store Manager was very rude to my grandmother saying she has to come back so they can look at the reciept get the time stamp so they can look at the video to see what happen mind you my grandmother is 89 years of age and not well she told him that and ask can they bring the water and we will show the guy the receipt he told her no she has to come in .. so I took the phone and asked if he can ask the driver if it's in the car bc this isn't the first time they didn't bring in everything he started to get very rude saying we need to come in to verify my grandmother on camera to see what she looks like and what happen I asked to speak to his manager he said he's the top notch . This supermarket leaves a lot to be desired. The manager, Manuel, is complacent, not interested in making this establishment more than just mediocre. Employees lack customer service skills, probably because they are unskilled high school students. Work ethic is lacking as they cannot wait for the store to close, counting out their cash registers twenty minutes before closing time. The meat department is an unappetizing disgrace. Do you want a little meat with all that fat? Pork chops are rimmed with inches of fat. Ground beef is white because it is ground with so much fat. Where did this place come from? The store often smells like rotten fish. This supermarket epitomizes everything you "DON'T" want in a supermarket. It lost a contract with Boars Head products. It lost its sushi chef. That speaks volumes. Residents of Baldwin deserve better. read more

So glad this supermarket opened up. Not sure about the problems some people have had with perishables, as I haven't had any issue with that. Regardless, this place does a good job of providing pretty much everything you'll find at other larger supermarket chains, and has a good selection of "ethic" (translation: Latino) food products, which is great for me, as we cook a lot of Latin American dishes. The staff are very friendly, and a few times the staff have gone above and beyond in making sure I find what I needed. The workers in the fish/seafood section were particularly friendly and seem to genuinely enjoy helping me out. Highly recommended. The only thing that prevented a 5 star rating was that on occasion they were out of stock with some of the meats I was looking to buy (probably because I shop very late and people purchased what I was looking for earlier in the day). A very minor issue, but it wouldn't be right to give a "perfect" rating because of that. In short? It's absolutely worth giving them your business, and I'm happy to have them in my neighborhood.
