We visited Ideal Pet Stop while we were in the area, to get treats for our dog. The Ideal Pet Stop seems to serve mostly those in the Seward Park neighborhood, as it's one of the main businesses in the area. We walked inside and there was one employee working and stocking shelves. The place is untidy and disorganized. There were a lot of boxes of products that were all around the walkways of all of the aisles, needing to be shelved. With that said, it wasn't the best or safest place to walk around in since items needed to be off the floor and on to shelves. They do offer great products here though for pets. Lots of different options for food, treats, hygiene products, car seats, etc... They also sell mice inside. We were able to get some free samples for our dog, but we did notice that the prices here are much higher for the same product that's sold at our pet store in Bellevue. I also noticed that in addition to pet supplies, they sell some home basics like toilet paper, milk, soaps, etc... Again, it seems to serve the local neighborhood partly as a convenience store. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back to Ideal Pet Stop, but it's nice to know this neighborhood can come here for its pet needs and perhaps more. read more

We stumbled on this place and so happy we did. It has everything for our kitty! I used to split my time between different pet stores but now I'll just come here. I over heard the pandemic has been problematic and I really don't want to lose small businesses like this!! Just a short two block walk from Four Paws Veterinary center is this local neighborhood pet store. It is certainly not as big as the mega chain stores but what it lacks in size it makes up with kind and helpful staff who take the time to explain things. Anyone who follows me on Yelp knows that every other Friday I take my Pug Pugsly to the vet where he gets his spa treatment. Sometimes when I'm in the area this pet store is a very convenient place to walk to and stop in and see what they have. The staff greet you when you walk in the store and as soon as your inside you get that independent business vibe which is something that's lacking in many of the bigger chain pet stores. One of the good things about patronizing a small local business is that you're more apt to have someone on staff who will take more time with you. That personal touch not only extends to showing you where things are but taking extra time to help. I have been to many of the larger stores looking for a new raincoat for Pugsly and usually I'm just told where they're located. Then when I have a question, I have to wander the aisles looking for assistance. That's not the situation here. The staff are easy to find and more than willing to help. I was looking for a raincoat which is more of a seasonal item in pet shops but this store actually had some. Trying to hold Pugsly's leash lead, him and the raincoat would take more hands thank have. Fortunately, a staff person actually helped me by offering to hold my little pug because he was way too excited to make this a one man task! He earlier got away several times and was dragging his retractable leash around the store as I chased him. He's a fast pug! They did not have what I wanted in his size but offered to order it for me. I needed it that day and they understood. The store has a wide selection based on your type of pet. There's stuff for all kinds of critters so it's not just all about Pugsly and dogs... although Pugsly probably saw this shop as his own personal playground. My advice is if you're in the area check this pet shop out. You never know what you'll find at a small independent business catering to pets. It's a good way to expose you and your pets to different products that you can't find at the bigger stores. Wander the aisles with or without your furry friend and pick something up for them. I was hesitant to come here because of the terrible reviews, but I'm glad I decided to find out for myself. The young woman who helped me was absolutely fantastic. She even gave me a bag of dog food samples to take home. Not only that, she educated me about my puppy's coat and digestion and recommended some good chew toys. So yes, I suppose she didn't greet me or smother me with shopkeepers' cheer when I came in. (That seems to be the most frequent complaint.) She let me walk around the store on my own and approach her for help--which is what I prefer--and when I did ask advice she gave me a welcome boatload of information. This pet store is straight out of an episode of Portlandia. You know the feminist bookstore episode? Yeah, well Ideal Pet Store is the feminist pet store! After spending my money off and on at this place for six years, I will no longer be doing so as I am convinced that the people working here would prefer it if only women shop there. I've been living in the Seward Park neighborhood for almost six years now. My wife and I have frequented the Ideal Pet Shop fairly regularly since we've moved to the neighborhood. I never gave much thought to it initially but over the years, I've noticed that the people who work at this store are just never very friendly to me. I never get a smile, and often there is very little eye contact or words exchanged. When I would tell my wife about my experiences at this store, she would look puzzled and tell me that they are always nice to her. I also want to point out that I have NEVER seen a man working at this store in the six years I've been here. Tonight, my wife and I went into the store together except that my wife went in just ahead of me. I followed shortly after her and my experience was the same as usual, no acknowledgement, no greeting or smile etc. We just stopped in to get some cat good real quick. As we checked out, once again, the clerk says nothing (doesn't even look up at us) until my wife says "Thank You" on our way out and the clerk looks up at my wife only and replies to her with a smile. After we leave the store, I mention how unfriendly they always are to me and my wife tells me that the clerk smiled and said hello to her when she initially walked in without me! I consider myself a supporter of feminism and women's rights and it's really too bad that these man hating women have treated me and (judging by other reviews) others so poorly. My wife and I will not be shopping at this store anymore. I'd rather go the extra way and support a corporate pet store just to prove a point. On a completely different note, the store is dirty and disorganized anyway so it's just not an enjoyable experience to shop there for several reasons. read more

I moved to the neighborhood in July and was quite relieved that a pet store carrying high quality foods was within walking distance. Every time I've been in to Ideal Pet Stop I leave disappointed. Customer service is very important to me and this place lacks service. For example, I was in last week and the woman working failed to tell me that they were out of bags until I had already paid for my basketful of foods and treats. She had no solutions to offer me, and just said "sorrrry!" and shrugged. I had to ask if I could keep my items in a basket behind the counter and come back with a bag. She agreed, and proceeded to watch me put all of my items back in the basket. Thanks lady! So, I return about 15 minutes later with my dog on a leash and waited at the front for the clerk to finish with her customer so I could pick up my purchased goods. She just stared at me confused! And then it hits her... "OH! Your stuff!" So she puts the basket on the counter... and AGAIN... I have to bag up all my own things while she turns her back to me and starts texting on her phone. Really? I mean.. come on. They sell the food I feed my dog and cats. I appreciate the nonexistence of crap like Science Diet, Iams, etc. They have a very poor selection of treats and it's always hit or miss. A lot of the dog treats I purchased just shattered into a million pieces and left my dog uninterested. They sell the small flossies for $2.99 (overpriced). There is a lot of damaged packaging. I can walk here. It's sooo convenient. But after being burned multiple times and treated as though my dollars aren't appreciated, I will go out of my way for better service. read more

Wow. What an awful place. Despite the fact that they are located in a convenient spot AND carry both dog & chicken supplies, I will never set foot in this horrible, shabby shop again. I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old as well as 3 dogs and 7 chickens, so life is sort of hectic. I usually called ahead my orders here for BIG bags of dog food and BIG bags of chicken bedding so that I could park six feet from the door and just run in. I thought this was terrifically clever -- save time, keep my kids out of the store, make life easier for everybody, right? Well, not so much, I guess. Every time I called I was met with a glacial response. The owner gave grunts of begrudging assent. When I stopped in to pick up my orders, she acted like carrying things out to my car was the biggest imaginable inconvenience. No smiles, no friendly words, just weird WAVES of hostility. I shrugged and figured, what the heck -- she's a grump who loves dogs, so what? This is Seattle -- you can't toss a Chuck-it without whacking somebody on the spectrum. But today was the last straw. My kids are both very ill. The youngest had a 100 fever on and off for days and the oldest has been struggling with serious asthma attacks and is on three new kinds of medication. It's not the best time to shop but the beasts gotta eat. So I packed these poor kids into the car and called ahead to have the order ready. Unfortunately, they didn't answer, so I was forced to drag them into the store. Of course the youngest falls on the way in and gets a bloody knee and is sobbing inconsolably and refuses to leave my arms, the oldest has to use the potty and then when he's done, he tears in big loops around the store like a terrier released from a long trip in the trunk of a car. Blame the crazy steroids he's on to keep him BREATHING. The tattooed hostility lady is SEETHING. I ask her nicely if I can sit behind the register to show the crying kid the nifty lizards. She looked at me as if I'd splashed her with acid. I tried to explain that he'd spent six hours in the ER at Children's Hospital the day before and was just worn out. Again -- not even a nod, never mind a smile. I asked her if she could help me pick out a leather collar. She curtly informs me, "What we have is out there." Uh...thanks? When I politely ask if she plans on carrying non-cedar shavings for chickens, she flies off the handle and snaps at me that "I've been gone for two weeks, okay? I wasn't able to order everything." Uh...okay. We rang up and I asked her to help us out to the car. She heaved our things into the car and stomped off. I called out, "Thanks so much." No response. Not even a glance. At this point I feel justified in calling out, "Excuse me? I can't help but feel that you are upset with us for some reason. Is there something you want to tell us? " She says, "Yeah, you let your kids run around and it's really dangerous." My four year old DID run around the store, it's true. But so what? Did he kill anybody? Tear anything off the shelf? Pee on the floor? No. He did not. He's a little boy. Sorry, I can't put him on a leash. And 9 times out of 10 the kids don't even come into the store. I respond, "That's true but we've been coming here for months and spending a LOT of money and you've NEVER bothered to smile at us." She growled, "Listen, I'm having a really bad day." I am flabbergasted and sputter back, "Oh yeah? Well, I've got a sick kid with a fever of 101. That's no excuse for being mean." Without another word, she turns on her heel, stomps off and SLAMS the shop door. Okay, let's do the math. $200 every 2 weeks = $400 a month. $400 x 12 months = $4,800. Let's pretend they have the unlikely good fortune of staying in business for 5 more years -- 5 years x $4,800 = KISS $24,000 GOODBYE, MEAN LADY. Dogs are great, but HUMAN BEINGS PAY THE RENT. Wow. This place might be the anti poster child for the "shop local" movement. Stopped in for the first time tonight for dog provisions. As I was poring over their dental selections I overheard the clerk educating a customer that Procter & Gamble had bought out the brand she was buying (EVO), so due to P&G's horrible business practices they would be phasing out her brand soon. Awesome, I'm liking her knowledge and passion. My turn at the register. I was purchasing a different food brand than the previous customer (California Natural), and some sketchy looking dental wipes. I asked if they were alright, since i'd read positive reviews about something similar. The answer was simply "yeah", prompting me to wonder aloud "...iiiiis there something else you recommend?" "No". Gosh, thanks? I kid you not, I checked my rearview mirror as soon as I got back to the car thinking maybe a coworker had sharpied a swastika on my forehead while I wasn't paying attention. Hours later this stellar experience is stuck in my craw so I googled the dog food brand I bought, and it's owned by the same parent company bought out by P&G. Shame on me for not keeping up on food my dog did well with last summer, but if one customer gets a heads up, shouldn't others? If my dog gets diarrhea, I'll consider it a symbol of my first and last trip here. read more

Its sad that this is our "neighborhood" pet store, when the folks that work inside definitely are not friendly, kind or knowledgeable. If you ask me, they are plain lazy and have no cares for the customers that walk through their doors or for their animals. I am all about supporting our local businesses, but when we walk in to buy dog food, treats or toys (mind you, the ideal pet store's prices are $2-3 more than Mud Bay or Pet Co), we get no greetings when we walk in, and the lady that helps us while checking out, gives us this look like we are inconveniencing her by just being there. My husband and I have decided to spend the extra time to drive to Cap Hill to Mud Bay with better service and just plain old nicer people who want to help. I recommend shopping at Ideal Pet Store only if you REALLY have to. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and spend your money elsewhere. read more

This place is more like a feed supply store you might find in the midwest rather than a frou frou urban pet boutique. It's about basic supplies without the fluff. Personally, I'm thankful for that. I love this place, they have the best selection of food and litter - and great prices. If you have particular questions about your pet's diets or habits, or need a suggestion on a product, just ask. The employees are extremely knowledgable and clearly love animals. If your pet doesn't like the food, they'll happily replace it with another one. A nice, neighborhood pet store with great prices and good service. It's normally staffed by one or two people who will go out of their way to try and answer your questions and find the right product(s) to suit your needs. One time in particular, I had a cat who was terminally ill and not wanting to eat. We had a rough night and I came in bleary-eyed and desperate for something bland to feed her. Not only did the manager search everywhere in her store for something that seemed appropriate for my dying kitty, but she even went across the street with me to the Co-op to continue the search, even went as far as asking the deli people if they had some chicken broth I could buy (without seasonings). I've never had any other store give me that type of customer service and I'll never forget it. Their selection is very good and comparable to similar sized stores. And I've found their prices to be at the very competitive, if not better than most local and major pet store chains. My beloved canine companion Sophia loves visiting and gives it a five paw rating. read more

The folks at the Seattle Canine Club compared the Iams we were feeding our [over-weight] dogs to McDonalds. They gave us a list of healthier dog food, which I searched for at Safeway and Target, but couldn't find. Lo and behold, the Ideal Pet Stop a mere 4 blocks from my house carried most of the healthier brands on that list. As well as a huge assortment of other goodies for practically any type of pet. The folks that work here are always friendly. And they understand good service: at one point we ran out of our special low-fat food that we've been feeding our [now only slightly over-weight] dogs. I headed down to the Ideal Pet Stop, but they were out of that food. My beagle has a sensitive stomach--whenever we change her food (or give her people food) she pukes and craps everywhere. So this was a pretty big problem. So the staff at the Pet Stop found a bunch of sample single serving bags and gave them to me free, and let me know when their next shipment of food was going to arrive. And so we got through a puke-/crap-everywhere-free couple days, and lived happily ever after. read more

This is a solid pet store where you can probably find that special brand no one else carries for your pet. But I agree with the other reviewers - you'll have to find it yourself. I don't mind so much - I'm a "get in-get out" kind of guy when it comes to shopping, and this is the only place I've found close to my house that carries Precise dog food. A premium brand with a premium price, but my Shepherd turned from being a picky eater to being a chow-hound on it, so that's all I buy now. I don't mind that the staff don't care to chat about my dogs, pet care, etc. since I know what I need and I can get it almost every time I go. Update on 05/21/2018 Michael, the assistant manager, messaged me through Yelp apologizing for the experience I had with his manager. He told me to come get a free bag of cat food and that he doesn't want me to stop shopping at my neighborhood pet store because of one bad experience. When I arrived he was nothing but kind and apologetic. Michael should be manager because he has great customer service skills and knows how to problem solve. Thanks for your help Michael! I've been coming here to buy pet food for my animals since I was a young girl and have never had problems. For the last 5-6 months I've been purchasing the brand Solid Gold for my kittens. When I purchased this brand for the very first time the lady told me about the incentive I would receive after purchasing 7 bags which was a free bag of the Solid Gold cat food. She started an index card which is used to keep track of all the bags of food people buy. I came in every 2 weeks or so to buy that exact brand with the idea in mind that I'd be able to get a free one at some point. A couple of weeks ago when I came in there was a young man with a paper boy hat and as I was checking out with the usual bag of cat food I told him my last name so he could pull my index card and write in my purchase (I was also curious to see where I was at with how many bags I've purchased since I was almost positive I had reached 7 bags). He searched and searched and wasn't able to find it and told me a new filing system had occurred so maybe it was lost. He verbalized to me that he would write me a new index card, continue searching for the old one and next time I came in we could compile the new and old cards so I'd be able to get my free bag. Today I went in and explained the situation to the same lady I had come across many times while purchasing the cat food. She searched for my old card and wasn't able to find it, just my new one with a single purchase of cat food. Instead of being met with customer service her words were "so just make sure every time you purchase the cat food you let them know your last name" and I replied with "that's what I do every time I make a purchase here". Then she stated to me, two times, that "the store isn't held responsible for this incentive program and if it doesn't seem to work out I'll take it away" and "there should be a disclaimer saying the store isn't held responsible". This woman was talking to me as if she didn't understand what I was trying to tell her and responded to my concern about losing my card and possibly losing a free bag of food with answers that had nothing to do with solving the problem at hand. I kept my cool but was bothered and to reassure that she actually heard what I was saying I asked her how many bags until a customer received a free one, she responded with 7 bags. After her response I explained that I more than likely had reached 7 purchased bags of Solid Gold but she still talked to me as if I was unintelligent and didn't do anything about losing my card. She also acknowledged a couple of times during that conversation that she remembered me and sees me come in often yet didn't want to fix the problem. I paid and left without saying a word. Needless to say I'll never be coming back to this pet store even though it's in my neighborhood and even though I purchased food and volunteered here as a kid. It's sad because I want to keep supporting a local business but not if they treat their customers like this. On top of it all she never even apologized for losing my index card. read more

A very small store directly across from PCC, Ideal Pet store gives 10% discounts of cases of food, which I really like. They are competitive with prices from the big guys (Petco, etc), have a good selection despite the store's small space and rarely have a long line. Not the happiest of employees, you won't get a giant smile when you walk in or small talk, but if you need a good deal, this is a great place to go. read more

I have two cats and this is the only place I go for healthy food and dust free litter. The staff knows what they are talking about and are very helpful. The manager especially is my favorite, she's a blonde woman with glasses. She always helps me pick out great food that my cats love. She has also helped me find cones for them when I got them fixed. Because my one cat wouldn't keep the cone on after surgery. She is very nice and knowledgeable about the products in the store. Mostly I love that it is just a short walk away and I grab all my cats favorite treat with ease. Would 100% recommend this place if your looking for a good local spot that isn't a big chain store. read more

I love Ideal. Once, I was a Petco grrl. I bought MaxCat canned and dry. Then I started stopping at Ideal, which is local (owner lives in Alaska). They have a better caliber of food and their prices are great for a small store. I currently feed my cats a combination of Precise and Innova Evo, plus Wellness canned. These products are usually on the shelf. If they're not, the staff knows when they're coming in (usually on Fridays for Wellness).. I now use Integrity cat litter, available at the store. Ideal has a small staff. One person usually has to run the cash register AND answer questions from customers AND place orders. Sometimes, they are too busy to answer questions thoroughly. But, if it's not too busy, they will answer questions honestly and without thought to making the sale. They really care about animals. read more

We are lucky to have such a down-to-earth, local and affordable pet shop in southeast Seattle. Ideal Pet has knowledgeable staff, and excellent selection, a great community of customers, and no B.S. The only bad part is that our dog can't walk by without hankering to get inside and get a treat. I know there are other pet shops opening up in Columbia City, but Ideal is the real deal, and has been serving our neighborhood for a long time. I am a big believer in supporting small, locally-owned businesses, but the complete lack of customer service has driven me away from this horrible place. You will NEVER be greeted when you enter this store. You will NEVER receive a thank you after making a purchase. Went in for the first time last night, and will not be back. My wife and I along with our new dog, Nugget, went in last night to get Nugget a new chew toy. We went in ~5 mins before they close and were intending to be in there for a grand total of 1 min to buy a new toy. We were promptly met with "uhhhh, guys, I'm closing...". There were other patrons in the store, but we immediately left. For a place whose business plan, I assume, relies on selling people things, they sure don't care much about staying in business. Not too thrilled about my experience there. I went to get some sort of bandage or diaper for my dog because he was bleeding near his groin. The lady suggested I buy the disposable diapers as opposed to the reusable because they were cheaper. I thought it was kind of weird she said that but decided to be optimistic about it and decided to think she was just trying to be nice. I told her I had a giant German Shepherd and that we needed the biggest diapers because he was 149lbs. She assured me that my dog wasn't that size (even though I just had my dog weighed recently at the vet) and told me to go for the smaller package. Well on the bright side she told me if they were too small I could return them if I could find a way to measure my dogs waist and see if the diapers she recommended were too small. However the part that made me have an issue was when I was looking at the dog cookies and saw a Seahawks dog biscuit. She assured me that they were too expensive. I asked the price and she told me it was $2.99. That was the second time she told me something was too expensive for me to purchase. I felt extremely offended by this, I was unaware I looked as though I couldn't afford a dog biscuit for $2.99. I love supporting small businesses, and don't mind spending the extra money to keep places like this going but this is one place I'd rather not stop by ever again. read more

With 2 dogs and 3 cats I was thrilled to discover a local pet shop within walking distance just for the convenience but now I am pretty sure I'd still drive over even if we moved out of the area. The store staff have been great at helping me make choices about foods for my dogs both of which suffer from allergies. They even gave me a some samples to try out to see what worked. The store manager has a real love for animals and my two are always excited when they figure out where we are headed and they are lavished with attention and treats. The selection is very good and I have always gotten plenty of help in special ordering anything that they don't carry. I always get guidance or suggestions if needed. I get all my pet supplies here. I appreciate also they are diligent about maintaining purchase records for the buy 10 get one free programs. read more

Well I just got home from another unfriendly and frustrating visit to Ideal Pet Stop and had to write a bad review when I noticed I'm NOT the only one. I would like to give it a zero. It's hard to support a local business who's staff (specifically, one tall, brunette, tattoed woman) is consistently bitchy and unfriendly. In this case, I asked about a particular bag of chicken feed since I wasn't sure what to buy - I got a monosyllabic unhelpful reply. I decide to go ahead and purchase the 25 lb bag as she walkded away not offering to help me carry it. At 5'2", it was not impossible to carry, but was awkward. I think she may have enjoyed watching me struggle or didn't care. As I I lugged it up onto the counter and paid, i was thankful I was parked right out front and was opening my door remotely and wondering how the hell i was going to open the store door to get out when a very helpful customer walked in and immediately offered to help. Did SHE? uh, no. WOW. Shouldn't the owners be made aware of this horrible service? I will not shop here again and I will spread that message. I've been in here for a new leash, bag holder, harness, and also for a recommendation on carpet cleaner (since my dog is now on the older side). They seem to have a pretty wide array of prices and I usually go for the median priced things. They also have a well stocked, quality inventory. Every time I've been into the shop, the employees have been super helpful and knowledgable about the products I've inquired about and have suggested products that I am very satisfied with. Ideal Pet Stop is my neighborhood pet store and they carry nothing buy high quality pet foods at better prices than the other pet stores in my area. I buy one of the lower end price-wise products for my dogs and cat, but they are all very healthy and at perfect weights. The selection for treats, toys, bowls, collars, leashes and beds are great as well and they manage to pack a wide variety of products into their smallish store without it being too cluttered. They also carry supplies for every other indoor critter people might have as well as everything you might need for backyard chickens. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful helping me find certain items and decide between various products. I never shop anywhere else anymore and I'm here nearly every week picking up new things for my pampered bully mixes. I heartily recommend this wonderful local store. read more
