A true bummer they charge so much. 19.99 for a bale of choppy straw ie not the good stuff. Guy said his supplier charged him 14 for the bales. Reber Ranch still only charges 9.99 and its long cut. So where can I pick up some chicks? Well, I know there's one place in Burien you can actually buy yourself gobs of chicks and get them some feed to boot. This place is really cool where you can buy a salt lick, smoked chicken feet, bird feed, chicken coops, pet food, etc... Too bad I don't have any chickens at home nor a bird feeder to feed. But, I loved walking through the store and seeing and smelling stuff I've not seen since when I was a teenager picking up feed for my mothers horses at the county feed store. Great farm and feed shop in old downtown Burien. I love I don't have to make a long drive to get all the goodies I need for my pigmy goats and chickens. We've also bought new chickens from them after we lost a batch due to predators. They are all healthy and happy chickens, laying their little hearts out for us. We feed them the Hayes special mix crumble and the chickens love it. Who says you need to live out on a farm to have animals? Hayes will make creating your urban farm or homestead dreams come true. I've always been met with helpful guidance when I need it and friendly smiles when I go in. And don't fret hauling feed or bales into your car. Just pop in the front and pay for your order, then zip your car round the rear and they'll load everything up in your car for you. I hope they never move. My heart would break not to be able to make my feed stops there. Go support this fabulous local small business, you won't be sorry. Stumbled into this 1929 feed store while waiting for my car to get serviced. A stroll inside was like we walking down memory lane of how feed store used to be 30 + years ago. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and they have everything my chickie girls need. Save more than 50% some on some items compared to the online conglomerate. Employee Julio is horrible. Not customer friendly at all. Doesn't know the products. I went in today to pick up some items. The gentleman before me said that you can have her back and asked if you could help him put the bag in his car. Julio said that's why he's leaving the company because he has a sore back. He then said they are hiring and looking for young men to work there because they will have to lift heavy items. I am a Sr. VP of HR and was appalled by that discriminatory statement. He's not only discriminating against women but the older workforce. I told him that he can't fire based on gender and age; it's discriminatory. Justified and kept repeating that they have to have the item and I told them emails and people over 50 are able to do so. He still disagreed. I explained he can have the company sued and he stated that's what the owner wants, which I doubt very seriously. Another thing that bothers me is that I was in the store last Thursday or Friday and today I paid $4 more. He said the prices changes almost daily depending on the taxes which again isn't true. Julio is a flight risk for this business legally! The owner Sue is who I spoke to in the past and she's extremely pleasant. I was shocked to encounter an employee like Julio working there. read more

The first time coming here, I was assisted by a nice guy (very knowledgeable) who showed me the timothy hay bale (for sizing purposes) and how big the bag would be if I decided I didn't want the bale. I decided on getting the bag and he went out to get me a whole new stuffed bag of hay! It's actually a lot cheaper and A LOT more than what I used to get somewhere else, so this place is definitely a keeper. The hay actually didn't make me get any kind of allergic reactions like the other hay I used to get, so that's really a big plus for me! & also a big plus for my bunnies because now they are eating this hay non-stop! Wow! Not a lot of "flash" but amazing prices and customer service nestled in quaint Olde Towne Burien. They have feed for every member of our pet "family" - from pot bellied pig food, to food for our Flemish giant rabbit. I foster, um, quite a lot of cats and was literally spending hundreds of dollars a month on World's Best. Enter Hayes Feed, where I can buy 25 lb. bags of chick feed which work just as well and cost two-thirds less (50 lb. bags are even cheaper but my back would revolt). The nice folks at Hayes may not remember my name but they've come to expect the cat lady who picks up her bags of "cat litter" every month. To tell you the truth, I love coming here because it's fun to see the chicks, pet the dog, take in the feed/hay/farmy aromas and chit chat with some of the most down-home people you're likely to meet in the Seattle area. Haye's Feed and Country Store is a decent little feed shop. It was recommended to me by a woman that I bought some turkeys from. They don't have a huge selection, and the store is dusty. But the staff are nice, and they will try to order you something if they don't carry it. Also, the prices are fairly reasonable. This is a feed shop that caters to FARMERS, not prissy suburb moms that are looking for something for their daughter's 4-H Pony. I use to shop more in old burien but with the lack of stores lately I forget what a great little store Hays is. I've been going here for a few years now, at least as long as I've had birds up here in Seattle. Their special crumble is the only feed my kids will eat. I've gone other places (because I was living closer to them when I stumbled upon them, living in Normandy Park) but then I moved to Sammamish, then Monroe, and it got kind of far to come down once a week. But my birds wouldn't eat anything else. Literally. So I'd come down once a month and buy 4-5 bags at a time. Since moving back to Issaquah its an easier commute, but with the welfare of my birds' being so important, I'm sure I'd find a way to buy from them if I lived back in Texas. The staff are really friendly, funny and knowledgeable. It's a nice break after sitting in traffic to have a good laugh with them for a few minutes. The food may seem to be overpriced, but the other day I bought a "special blend" from another store that my birds refused to touch. It cost the same. And the people weren't as friendly. In all actuality, when you walk into a store, they know you, if not by name, but by what you buy, or by where you live and THANK you for making the drive, who really cares what you're paying. They know your birds are happy and you're there for that reason only. Otherwise... you'd not be there. I get my coops built from a guy in Orting (WELL worth the 3 hour drive one way) and the feed in Burien... If it's good, don't look elsewhere, right? the things I do for my babies! read more

I discovered this place a few months looking for straw for my chicken coop. They have a fantastic selection of items. I ended up purchasing some baby chicks from them a month ago. They are healthy and happy. My older hen is a picky eater and has turned down several types of food I have purchased for her from other stores. I gave her some of the Hayes special crumble and she loves it! Definitely recommend this place, everyone is friendly and extremely helpful. Definitely a gem in Burien! read more

I cannot say enough good things about this store and the humans that work here. We are avid caregivers to the woodland animals (squirrels, raccoons, birds) and I would normally supplement picking up a bag of nuts while grocery shopping and hit these guys up for the big orders but...the pandemic occurred. So we started going to Hayes once a week to avoid being exposed unnecessarily through the stupidity of others, they always have what we need and are always helpful and kind (they even remember our names & what we usually get!) This is missing from most retail establishments today, it's go in...get your crap and get out at most places even before the virus hit. We are so grateful to have them so we can continue to take care of the wildlife which in turn takes care of us emotionally. Fantastic feed store - and so close! I went in to collect supplies in preparation for spring chickens and all I had to do was tell the staff what I was doing - they did the rest. They walked me around the store while letting me know what I needed and what my options were - they even had light bulbs for the heat lamp! Not only did they help me with supplies, they were also very knowledgeable about chickens and talked to me about how to care for them and raise them, etc. One stop farm shopping! I hopped in here real quick to get a guy I'm dating a lil duck feed for his daughters, Ummmm $0.95 a pound, hell yes I will take 5 pounds! WHAT! Pigs ears for my puppy for $1.85 and they were HUGE! My mom use to take us here when we were little to get duck/peacock/rabbit feed, and I remember coming to the little feed store, same smell. They don't have the chicks yet, but I can see they are in the process of hatching the eggs, so I will make sure to bring my nephews/neices in when they arrive. You can get generic dog bisquits also 95 cents per pound, my pup is wheat allergic, so pigs ears for her, but others might like the cheap bisquits. They have a dog (golden) running around lose, but its friendly and they kenneled it when I came in. Another time there was a meowing black cat in a cage and a loud parrot, which my pup found fascinating. The staff was super nice, as usual for owners in Burien! He ask me what I gave my pup to eat, and I explained Mudbay and the wheat-free foods...He agreed and he gave me a sample free of his wheat-free dog food, to try, and my pup hadnt been eating, so I tried it, what do you know, she ate it. FINALLY! Nothing wrong with the dust, its the crack corn feed and hay it just gets every where. I know you can order all your needs for animals here. GREAT store and fond memories. read more
