I have been going to iKandi Salon for over 5 years. I think the salon a hidden jewel of Evanston and Kandi the owner is simply fabulous. Many of my professional friends go to iKandi for their haircare and styles. What I love about the salon is that they not only cater to relaxed hair or chemically treated hair but they do natural hair styles and locs and braids. I wear natural hair and iKandi has helped me maintain my natural hair and turned out some great styles on me that I wear into my corporate and casual life. I've gotten faux locs, twists, and weaves done at iKandi and I've never been disappointed with any of the work. Also, because many of the clients have diverse schedules the salon has wide ranges of hours to come in and get your hair done. I've been during the week, after work, and after church. The scheduling is nice too because they send you text reminders of your appointment. I recommend iKandi to all my naturalista hair friends and my friends with relaxers. I definitely recommend iKandi. Update: iKandi is open and has precautions in place to have a safe beauty experience. There are temperature checks and hand sanitizer before sitting in the chair. Also, you must wear a mask. There are sneeze guards at the sinks and no in shop waiting to keep the number of people in the salon to a minimum. The stylists wear masks. I am a white parent of a 5 year-old biracial foster daughter, and having her hair braided was a new experience for both of us. Kandi was patient, kind, and amazing at her craft. She gave me tips along the way, and was very gentle as she washed, detangled, trimmed, blew dry and braided my little one's hair. Not only does her hair look amazing, but our mornings are more peaceful now that she doesn't have to sit through my attempts at hairstyling. Kandi's website is so clear and easy to use, and I appreciate the explanation of services and transparent pricing. Her safety precautions during COVID were also appreciated (she took our temperature upon entering, we were all masked the whole time, and there were a limited number of people in the salon). Charges $70 per hour and it's not like they work very fast; more overpriced than most braiders. Wouldn't recommend if you don't want to spend $300+ for a hairstyle read more

I've visited this salon twice and so far both experiences were great! The shop is in a convenient location between work/home, the hours are perfect and the owner Kandi and other associates are very friendly! I especially appreciate 1. they do multiple hair styles, 2. have a price list on the website (no surprises) and 3. booking appointments & follow-ups are done technologically and very professionally; hence arriving on time and finding three or more clients have not been booked at once. read more

I should have listened to that review dated below - 8-22-2019. I called to make an appointment at the shop. I told the person who I believed the be the owner that I wear a unit/wig. What I needed was to wash and braid my hair that is under, and wash the unit. The owner was a bit rough talking over the phone but I was going out of town and I needed a wash before I leave. The owner told me that it would take about 25 minutes to braid the hair that is going under a unit and put the unit bag on. It did take about 25 minutes to braid my natural hair and they wash the unit. She charged me $80 for that. Wait till you hear that one, after they washed the unit, I asked them to use a flat iron to style it, the person who braided my hair told she only braid hair. The owner then said that if she do it she would be here all night....what...what stylist charges $80 and spend 25 minutes braid your natural hair and can not style a short shoulder length unit with a curling iron. Style Seat is showing these people how to overcharge for their services and also need to teach them more customer service skills. One good thing about the salon, they took your temperature when everyone comes in the salon, they leave the window open for air circulation in light of Covid and they have hand sanitizer at the entrance of the salon that everyone has to use and everyone has to wear masks. I felt a bit more comfortable going in due to COVID. After a few hours, the hairstylist who did my hair braided it so tight, so I undo the whole thing so I can sleep tonight. read more

I took my daughter to see Kandi for a haircut. She was excellent. This is the only salon I will ever take my daughter too. Kandi made us feel welcome and answered all of my hair care questions. She even showed me how to do a quick and easy hairstyle for busy mornings. We are definitely going back. read more

I went to iKandi after getting the recommendation from a nurse at Evanston hospital as the place to go for box braids, and I wholeheartedly agree. I have a natural hair texture, and had just had twins-- a low maintenance "new mom" hair style was needed asap. They were able to get me in for an early appointment on short notice, and it was one of the fastest braiding sessions I've ever had. The braids were consistent and not at all painful. They have their own hair supply they use, and the price was pretty great considering it included the hair. One of my babies was still in the hospital (right down the street), so I ended up wearing my other baby in a wrap, and she actually slept through it all. And I was used to braiding appointments taking foreeeeeeeever, even for box braids, and was totally shocked when the stylist was nearly done in half the time. It was a chill salon, the staff had an upbeat attitude, and the stylist did fast, great work-- highly recommend. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. I was recommended to this salon. I called twice and left a message. My call was returned by the receptionist. I told her exactly what I wanted and when. She told me to send her pictures of the style and she would call me right back. I sent the pictures on Tuesday at 5pm. The receptionist ( Kandi's sister) didn't text me back until 10pm that night. The next day I had questions regarding the price because it just didn't seem right. I asked her to call me instead of texting. She said she would have Kandi call me. The whole day went by without a call. On Thursday morning I text the receptionist again asking when I should expect the call from Kandi and she writes back "what am I having her call you for" like she had no reference of our text conversation from the previous day. I send her a screenshot of literally our last text exchange where she said she would have kandi call me. She then responds asking if I'm ready to book. I text her telling her, yes I am but I would like to finalize the price and style before doing so and if she could call me instead of texting. She then asks me to call her, weird but whatever, I call her. She is rude, says that's the price Kandi told her and she's just the receptionist. So I understand that completely so I ask her to hace kandi call me like she originally suggested. She then tells me Kandi is too busy to call me and if I wanted to walk in and talk to her i could. I told her that is unreasonable because I work full time and that's the last thing I'm trying to do after work when this could be a conversation. I then proceed to ask if there's even any availability on Saturday or Sunday. This lady tells me no. She knew from our very 1st call when I was looking for a style, that's when she should have told me there was no availability. Instead she wasted my time and when I asked her why she didn't tell me this sooner she said she doesn't know people's schedule. I don't understand what her purpose as a salon receptionist is then if she doesn't know the stylist schedules. She then hung up on me. I've never stepped foot in this salon and I never will. And I recommend you don't either unless you want to get treated like they're doing your hair for free while overcharging. read more

I've been taking my daughter to iKandi for about a year and a half now. Their prices for braiding a child's hair are very affordable and Courtnee (whose name I know I'm spelling wrong) is wonderful with my daughter. There's always music playing and it's a nice, laid back atmosphere. There's never an unreasonable wait...my daughter's always at the shampoo bowl within 10 minutes of the appointment time. We've always had styles we love, no matter how specific or vague we are with our requests. Parking is metered on the street out front, but never a problem except on NU football game days. read more

I have spent the better part of 10 years looking for someone who could cut/style thick hispanic hair and I finally found Tameka at IKandi hair salon. She not only cut it, she styled it with beautiful curls that stayed in place for ever, and my hair hasn't been this soft and shiny in years. I also loved being surrounded by kids getting their hair done and will be bringing my daughter for conditioning and styling. read more

iKandi was a good studio that braided my hair well. i don't know how much I loved the style in the end, but I think it was because the style may not necessarily fix my face well or I told the hair stylist the picture didn't have to be exact. However, I was skeptical with the stylist using a very fine tooth comb on my kinky hair, so I am a bit worried on how my hair would look when I took out the cornrows. Also, the braids were a bit tight, but not incredibly painful. Overall, the staff was incredibly sweet, especially the owner. read more

Long story. My twin daughters (8 year old) have been customers since 2010. The service was so great that I referred customers and continued to encounter Kandi about creating a website. Fast forward, September 2012, Courtney, who usually works on my daughters hair, assigned this pregnant woman to work on one of my daughter's hair, who has courser hair and some mats). The woman put something in her hair and waited 2.5 hours, while my daughter was crying while her sister and her friend were being serviced, cracking jokes with Courtney. I was disappointed that Courtney failed to step in. Finally, after 5.75 hours, normally for a 2.50 hours job, she was done and we left. I called Kandi on Tuesday and explained what had happened. She was apologetic and said that she was sending the girls something and would discuss this matter with the woman. Long story short..... 6 weeks has come and gone without the promised whatever she was sending my daughter. This is after Kandi claimed that her sister was a having problems with a transplant and she dropping the gift in the mail... Lesson learned...... I now go to Paul Mitchell's on Roosevelt and Halsted in Chicago. read more

I landed at iKandi hair studio after a woman with beautiful braids at Target recommended the studio to me. They were able to schedule me on a Saturday which is the only day that works for my busy work schedule. I had the pleasure of having box braids put in by Kandi herself. They look amazing and I couldn't be more happy! While I was there Kandi educated me about how to take care of my hair. I've never had box braids and wasn't sure what to do or expect but after working with Kandi I felt very informed. What I appreciate most is that Kandi consulted with me about the look I wanted: length, color, style, ect, while giving me her professional opinion. She told me it would take about four hours to do a full head of braids and it ended up being four hours on the dot. I had a very positive experience the entire time. The salon is very cozy and I felt like a regular my first time there. Kandi and the other stylist were very friendly and welcoming. Can't wait to go back and have another cute style done or just learn how to maintain my natural locks.
