Also, asked the cashier if I could leave a heavy box in the cart, she said, "put everything up" and then when I proceeded to put up the heavy box, she yelled to leave it there. WTF?? I have bought most of my furniture from IKEA in other countries and always loved their furniture had a great experience. But something is wrong with IKEA in the US, at least in Emeryville. First time I went I asked to sign up to the credit card, and the girl told me she can't do that, that I should sign up online. So I did. Where I then saw an offer that said sign up in store and get $25 off? I decided to just let that go and applied. And I got an email saying I'd have to wait two weeks. The thing is, I'd just moved and needed to make a large furniture purchase so waiting two weeks was problematic. So I went back to buy some small things. The girl at the register was totally unfriendly and didn't help at all even though I had tons of stuff to pack and was obviously by myself, she started piling the next person's stuff on mine! I then had to return something and I ended up waiting almost an hour and it was absolute chaos and the staff seemed miserable and didn't apologize for the wait. I kept harassing the credit card people so I could at least get a delivery to furnish my apartment only to be told two weeks later that the address on my application didn't come through properly somehow and I now was approved but would have to wait another two weeks to get a card. But I'm starting to think I might be better off just chopping it up and going somewhere else. read more

This ikea has the most inefficient system. I am looking for a shelf for a cabinet I bought as-is in the store, asked an employee what size I should get, he measured it, and gave me the wrong size. I only found out after picking up the order - which was waiting 2 hours at the furniture pickup for the employees to get the shelves. Then waited another hour to refund them, and then another 2 hours to pick up the right ones. Fuming. Been in the store for 8 hours now. read more

I came by on Monday and the store looked totally picked over. Tons of items not on the shelves. I figured it was because of weekend business. Came back today (Thursday) since I was passing by, and hoped some of the items I wanted were back in stock...NOPE! Still looks exactly as picked over. I had talked to someone about one particular item on Monday, and the store's inventory said they had 34 in stock. None were on the shelves. There are still none on the shelves today. The only bright shining light was Kate in textiles/rugs. She called Palo Alto store, sat on hold, and confirmed they have 10 of that item on the shop floor. I'll be going there on my way home today. The absolute WORST IKEA I have ever been to. Listen to the other reviews and avoid this place at all costs. They are sold out of everything, the food WILL make you sick, and the customer service is absolutely terrible. Worst customer service in the history of ever. Claim they have a 365 day return policy but will find literally any reason not to take what you are retuning. The check out staff is pleasant enough but the staff in the return policy are extremely rude. They do not greet you, smile at you or even try to be remotely helpful. I had the displeasure of speaking with the "manager on duty" Felipa. She was arrogant, rude and dismissive. Been here many times, just never got to review them! Well, i went there a few days ago to pick up some things for the house, and I remember how nice it is and why I haven't been there in so long! We purchased an item that was a recall and had to come here to return it. Customer service was really nice, and we got all of our money back. This place is huge and you can likely find everything under the sun for your household...kitchen items, bedroom items, and pleny of children's decor and toys. For cheap ! They're organized and many things are very reasonably priced. Like all Ikeas... What I don't like is their floor plan, it's like you have to go through this "maze" in order to find what you're looking for. The departments are lined up one connecting to the next , so you can't easily skipp one department to go directly to the one you need. Great sales and marketing strategy here to get you to buy --buy-- buy! Try not to fall for it, go get what you need and don't pick up stuff you don't! That's the smart way to shop! We got lots of candles for our wedding, and pleny of furniture items for our new home. The staff that walks around this place could beef up better service. Service is blah but the options are amazing. Just moved into a new condo and came here with a friend, since they had a truck. Picked up a new coffee table, book shelf for my bedroom, and a ton of accessories. Pricing is great and I have owned Ikea furniture before and aware about they're quality. Basically self serve furniture warehouse store. Love their meat balls and their $.99 dogs. I should give Ikea 3 stars but that would be based on the quality of their products and how they don't survive multiple moves. I'm not planning on moving for years which is why I'm going this route. I have purchased a kitchen in Australia, and part of a kitchen in Chicago. So, I went online to design a kitchen for Berkeley. No amount of trying would allow me to log-in or sign-up for a log-in, as 1) "registered at another store." 2) Your family login doesn't work on this facility. (I don't have a family log-in) And back to 1) etc. in an endless circle. So I tried the 1-800 number provided. They are closed at 3 PM due to bad weather (true, it is raining in the Bay Area). It was 2.50 PM and the automated system would not allow me to progress. Finally I punching ' 9' got an operator... but I was then on endless hold. "Had I tried online, your answers are there." Eergh. Semi-disposable furniture. It's a double-edged sword. The cheap, DIY shelves, beds, couches and tables most know what they're getting in to. They'll be good for a bit and, you don't feel so guilty if you have to give it away, or leave it behind when you move on. In this arena they excel. THEN there is the other thing they offer - rooms. Kitchens and baths. We got a kitchen. Here, my friend, is where I OFFER WARNING. This is specific to IKEA and not any 3rd parties they may suggest to help you. But they're kind of the worst. Issues we ran into: 1 - During the 5 digit $$ purchase process - 1st visit not one person helped us. We had to return a second time. 2 - During this visit we had one person helping us, who was consistently looking at his watch, because he couldn't finish helping us. He told us this 3 times. I respect this, but please let us work with someone who can complete the task. Halfway through someone else came to help. 3 - We scheduled delivery, matching up with our house's schedule, with their delivery avails. We scheduled delivery of kitchen assets about 1 month out. 4 - CUT TO: Delivery day. (We were suspicious to not receive a confirmation call the day before) But on delivery day, nothing. They had automatically rescheduled our delivery 5-days after. Means we need to reschedule: Installation and counter tops. All of which were already scheduled 5 - Customer service 888 # was an over 2-hour experience. After holding, had someone help us, asked us to hold and said they were calling the Emeryville store. 30 minutes later someone else is on the line and casually says "oh, looks like the other person you were talking to didn't call the store" Umm, ok. She calls the store, says they will call me to reschedule delivery. (They didn't call back, and still waiting) AND customer service person says "FYI, if they don't call you before the delivery day, that means they're not coming." WHAAAAAAAAA? Not helpful or positive, and assumed on this end. Thanks, but no thanks. MORAL: Get your kitchen or bath somewhere else, not at IKEA. read more

I went online to check that the item I wanted was in stock and saw there were 13 at the Emeryville Store. However, in the store all the customer service kiosks have laminated signs that say that the online inventory count is not accurate. Turns out I went all the way to the store for nothing because my item wasn't there. When I was setting up the shipping I wanted it delivered to my mothers house because that is where the installation will be but the IKEA worker told me that someone must be there to accept the package or it wouldn't be left and I couldn't reach my mother to make sure she would be around so I took the day off work to intercept the package. The window for delivery was 9 - 5. After a phone call to IKEA at 4:45 I have learned that my package will be delivered by FedEx and that they would have left it no problem whether I was home or not. They always do for all the tenants in my building, and IKEA told me they don't have a policy otherwise. This entire adventure has been a frustrating waste of time (and money because I drove to there store, paid bridge toll, paid shipping and missed a day of work.) BOGUS. read more

If you buy online then you pay a lot more and don't get it back when you return. Have they ever heard of free shipping? A lot of businesses offer that, even for large items. One items was smashed, 4 items never showed, and one item was damaged and still packaged for shipment. Obviously someone at Ikea didn't what went out. I placed my order in December. The layout of ALL ikea stores is obviously designed to (a) confuse you and (b) make you stop and look at everything to initiate impulse buying. But worse, try getting someone on the phone to answer a simply question. Just got disconnected four times after pushing six prompts and waiting five minutes EACH TIME! This is all a ploy to force you into the store. And don't ask ANNA, the automated "help" (NOT) system for anything. She/It and her designer are idiots. I do have some complaints that can be alleviated by never shopping there on a weekend, arriving when the store opens and only purchase under 15 items so you can get in the shorter lines. Thanks to this location, I have had the chance to claim the very worst shopping experience that has ever occurred to me in my whole entire life! My partner and I placed an order online for Ikea over two months ago. When the item arrived, it had a damaged part and after many failed frustrating attempts of contacting Ikea, we were able to get Ikea to place a replacement part for us. Two weeks passed without receiving anything, we were on the line with Ikea customer service for a full hour to be told that the people at this very store in Emeryville did not ship out our replacement part because they were confused as to which replacement part to ship out (despite very clear instructions from us which one would think would be impossible to get confused about). Despite the initial feelings of irritation that neither the store nor Ikea online has informed us of this minor confusion which could have been resolved very quickly if we have been contacted, we naively agreed to wait for two more weeks thinking the matter has been now resolved. Another two weeks came and nothing happened but we wanted to give the competency of Ikea customer service a chance so we waited an extra week. Finally, we caved in and contacted Ikea helpline to find out that the order still has not been shipped (and yet we failed to comprehend why we have not received any status update about why it has not been shipped). The very helpful Ikea customer service person on the other end tried to call Emeryville store manager to inquire after the order to no avail but he earnestly promised us that the order would be extradited right away but one week later, without any news, we called again and waited on the phone for 30 minutes to find out that the order has still not been shipped from Emeryville store. The Ikea support person once again tried to call Emeryville store manager (which by now I have been convinced to be non-existent and just a figment of everyone's imagination) and still no one picked up. I am now promised for the third time that my item will be shipped out as soon as possible but who knows whether it will be shipped out tomorrow or next year or never. When i tried to press whether I can personally escalate the matter or call the Emeryville store myself, I was sadly informed that neither option was available. At this point, I could only say "how has your corporation/ company been functioning all the time without an escalation process, when there seems to be no coherent and seamless communication between the stores and Ikea online/ customer support?" After this two-month ordeal of working with Ikea, it feels very much like this corporation is a machine badly put together where all the screws are loose and about to fall out at any moment. I am very confident that my future purchases won't ever be made with this company ever again. Altogether, I have called Ikea three times and waited a total of one month to find out that there is no solution to a problem that can simply be solved if there were better communication between different Ikea divisions. read more
