If you're not already familiar with Ikea, it's Swedish inspired and based furniture store that prides itself on its do it yourself, affordable, yet stylish furniture.This new location is similar to many before it but is definitely on the smaller size. Restaurant and food is similar... clean, fresh simple foods at affordable prices. Very family friendly In a cafeteria setting. The store is set up so you enter way and if you follow the highlighted path, you end up pursuing through all the inspiring showrooms before ending up in the marketplace with textiles and household goods to recreate your own ikea-inspired room. The warehouse and "as-is" sections are your final stops prior to checking out. Multiple blue and yellow uniformed IKEA attendants are stationed to help... although if they are busy, it may take a while to flag one down. Furniture looks good, just don't try to move it! First off, gotta love IKEA but you also have to be smart about what you get there. There are tons of items that you're better off getting a more quality build piece. But then again there are things like furniture that are worth your while, as long as you're not living with wild pets or hyper destructive kids or reckless people damaging it, your furniture can last you years, even decades if you use it as intended. For the price, it can be an absolute steal. So despite some communication gaps, this Norfolk location was solid shopping experience. COVID doesn't make it easy but businesses are managing the best they know how. I have been on the hunt for a specific piece of furniture for months now. It's extremely affordable and seems to fly off the shelves. I would check daily using their inventory checker on the website. And each time it's in stock in either of the locations closest to me, they would sell out within a day. I then realized that the item count down would decrease so quickly, that it's actually people buying the item online and picking it up as opposed to people going into the stores. Game changer. So everyday, I'd refresh the website. Knowing that depending on which store had it in stock, I'd have to travel 2, 4 or 5 hours, I'd stalk Charlotte, Woodbridge and Atlanta relentlessly. It then dawned on me to check out Norfolk to see how far it was. Lo and behold, Norfolk happened to only be 3 hours away! When I saw the item in stock, I scooped it up and paid online. The trick however is that typically you have 7 days to pick up your order. Now due to COVID, you actually have 24 hours - which really makes scheduling tight. I had to rent a larger car, drive three hours away, collect my bounty, drive 3 hours back, unload my bounty and return the rental. It was an adventure to say the least. Did I mention that IKEA didn't offer shipping on this piece? So the whole "click and collect" process is a smooth one. After you get your confirmation email that your order is ready, when you get to IKEA, you back in to the designed spots and then sign on via an app so that the workers then bring you your item to load your car. The wait wasn't long and it was a nice hand off. The only thing is, they don't help you load it so if you're not stronger enough, you may need to get a hand. Afterward, of course one has to go into the actual store. The line was long due to staff letting folks in in phases but it went quickly. After collecting dozens of "must haves" I also sought to buy another large item that wasn't found on the shelves. I had to go to the info desk and from there, the worker told me that the staff would bring my item to where my car was parked (even tho I told her I was in the garage - she said yea yeah!) and handed me a receipt to pay at the cashier and told me I'd be given more instructions there. When I got the cashier I paid for the item and then was handled a leaflet that said "click and collect". I asked the cashier how it worked (not sure if it was different) and he also said that it would be brought to the car. I asked him how will they bring it to my car if I'm in the garage? He got flustered and said that they would and if I had further questions, then I should go to customer service. Turns out, it was the same method I had previously used to pick up the first item. It's unfortunate that all the staff aren't trained on how "click and collect" works - if they were, they'd be better equipped to guide folks on what to do and would provide a better experience. In all, the leaflet and website led me to pick up my order correctly but I also wonder about people who don't have smart phones. Those folks are definitely at a disadvantage. Still work to be done at IKEA but overall no crazy drama and I appreciate that. Got what I needed and also to my pleasant surprise, none of the items were damaged. Now that's a win! read more

absolutely HATE #IKEA s idea of customer service. Drove 3 hours to shop at the store and 3 hours home. Realized when we got home that the cashier did not process my customer loyalty number for 5% off my purchase even though I asked her three times if it went through. she assured me it did. got home and saw that it did not. Yes I should have looked before leaving the store but I was loading bags, my husband was paying and family members were wandering off. Kind of hectic at the register. Then part of our order had to be pulled and delivered to us in the parking lot so again I was distracted. After getting home I tried to call the store to complain and ask for a gift card (had receipt in hand to prove my claim) and the rep on the phone said I had to go to the store to get a receipt adjusted. really? drive six hours to tell a manager the cashier did not process my order as asked? Customer Support refused to give me a phone number to Norfolk store and then refused to let me speak to her supervisor to take my complaint up the chain and MAYBE get someone in Norfolk. Before this I never gave a second thought about making the trip to IKEA. If this is IKEAs idea of customer service I'll think twice or maybe three times before making the daylong trip. read more

I really like this store. Very cool stuff!!!! I love their non-furniture items. I bought the best wooden spoon I have ever owned here. It can be a little difficult to navigate and I frequently wondered just where we were. I have a couple negatives. They don't have enough electric scooters for disabled folks. They really, really need more. There is NEVER one available. They have a lot of wheelchairs but those require a second person to push them therefore inhibiting the disabled person from shopping alone. Additionally, I had heard about the wonderfulness of their Swedish meatballs. I found them to be dense, dry and tough. The food was a disappointment. But the shopping was great! read more

I remember when IKEA had first opened here and everyone was going ham about this place. I was not eager to go but a few weekends ago I looked in my daughter's room and was like she needs shelves or something. So I came here on a Saturday afternoon and was greeted as I came in by woman who explained the shopping experience. She told me how I'd go up the elevator and go thru all the model rooms and and can write down the items that I want or take pics of the code and then at the very end you pick them out in the huge self serve area. I was able to find a nice 8 cubby shelf and I also bought her several toys. It was sooooo easy to put this together. I did it in under 45 mins. I'm constantly on the ikea website now looking for things i don't need. And that's okay. read more

I'm torn between 2 and 3 stars, but being nice and going with 3. So this new Ikea in Hampton Roads is located off of Northampton Boulevard, very close to the Norfolk Outlets. So I've been 3 times so far, and was never super satisfied with the visits, like I normally am with other Ikea locations. First and second times were ok, food mediocre, not as good as I remember Ikea Swedish Meatballs being. But this last time, definitely deserves 1-2 stars, but I'm still going with a 3 because they still have decent furniture at good prices, and have lots of cool items for home and office. I'll break it down. My parents and I recently came at lunch time, and our experience in the dining area was horrible - food was COLD - meatballs, mashed potatoes, even my mom's soup, which was sitting in those big, heated soup containers/pots. The only good things were the fries that came with the tenders my mom ordered, because they had just come out of the fryer, and my dad's chocolate cake. Coffee was old and cold, we got the last bitter drips from the coffee machine and didn't drink it. The WORST part? Customer service...everyone who helped us (I mean, DIDN'T help us,) was just...uggh. Bad attitudes, and seemed bothered that they had to help you and take your order, scoop your food, take your payment. Some ladies came after us and told them the coffee was out, and as we kind of ate some of the food, waited, nothing was done about getting fresh coffee going. And that was about 30 minutes. It wasn't even worth going to the manager about; we just wanted to get our few items from downstairs & leave. I know their food is inexpensive, but it doesn't have to equal cold food and bad service. Really happy there's an Ikea here and the location is perfect. Every time I come to this location it feels like a new adventure. I gain a lot of inspiration from the show room and its easy to maneuver throughout. I highly recommend, if you can, to go during the middle of the week. It's far less crowded and satisfying to not have to people dodge during your visit. I think they offer reasonable pricing on all their items, and I really love that they sell basic household items like silverware, plate wear and even plants! I really like the food options, especially the Swedish meatballs. Even if you are not in the market for household shopping, I say stop by anyway and see what new collections are on display for future inspiration, or even go and grab breakfast or lunch. It's hard to come out empty handed. read more

I. Love. Ikea! Instead of rushing through the madness when they first opened weeks ago, I just patiently waited to come when it wasn't so hectic. Hubby and I visited on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded at all. We did have a problem parking, as he followed the signs to Ikea parking that brought us to the bus parking (which was the other side of the highway). I understand that parking is a mess because the outlets are still new, but they really should fix the traffic for the parking lot. That should be fixed! I immediately went straight to the showrooms which are my favorite! After about 60 minutes of perusing, we decided to try out some of their meatballs and chocolate cake. Well, we were going to until one of their employees behind the counter told us we needed to follow the lines even though there was no one in line. This totally bothered hubby and I because he could have taken our order anyway since no one was behind us. We lost our appetite and left. We had two carts full, we purchased 2 bookshelves and their organizing boxes. We had used a yellow bag so when we got to the cashier, we had to carry everything out without a bag. They offered blue bags for $1.50 to purchase only. This is nothing, but I feel it was on purpose they did not mention this. Even though most of this review seems to be on the negative side up until now, I want to add, I absolutely love Ikea's products; from the kitchen gadgets, furniture, food, plants, and bed spreads. Their products are beautiful, functional, and very reasonable. What more can you ask for? I would really like to give them 4.5 stars! I would take off 1/2 star because of the employees' attitude and general helpfulness. read more

Went in for a replacement part. Matt in customer service told me they don't offer them for childrens and to bring the whole table in. Two days later we bring the whole table in just to not be given a replacement. Definitely won't be back. If you promise a replacement it should be given. read more

This is the newest IKEA location nearby and I'm so lucky that it's 5 mins away from my house! My cousin had an invitation for the IKEA family event so we had early access. The store doesn't officially open until 4/10. There is ample parking for this store. Although we didn't get to park up front, we parked nearby in the garage which was still fairly close to the store front. I am a first timer so I didn't really know what to expect but everyone told me that I would fall in love with this store...they were right lol I instantly had the urge to redecorate my entire home lol. The prices were very reasonable in my opinion and the quality seemed pretty decent as well. My plan was to just make note of some things to buy and buy them at a later time but I did end up picking up some kitchen essentials and a stuffed elephant for my son. When I went to check out, the cashier noticed that I grabbed the display elephant and had someone go get another one for me. I thought that was very sweet of her to do. Everyone working today was so friendly and in great spirits. I hope they keep it up because I will definitely be back. What an amazing shopping experience!! read more

Aloha!! I'm visiting my Daughter and her Ohana who is currently stationed here in Norfolk. We came to Ikea to purchase a Queen Sized Bed Frame and was astonished of the wide selection and most importantly the cost. Since my Daughter had previously visited IKEA, she had her heart set on a certain Bed Frame. When we got there, we were able to locate and purchase the Bed Frame really quickly and easily. Love me some Ikea! Great parking for EVs. Very helpful staff. The best affordable lunch in town. I truly am so very happy that Ikea is close enough to my home. This has been one of the furniture places that I shopped pretty much since the 90's. Many happy purchases overall. When this location opened, I had to go browsing and ended up with new full length mirror and bunch of groceries. I'm an adult who can afford expensive furniture, but I prefer Ikea on most occasions. It's like having current stylish wardrobe at affordable price. It won't last a lifetime but it will make you look good while it does. read more

This review is only for the service we received at the snack area right before you exit. After a fun evening perusing and shopping the store, we decided to end our night with some delicious cinnamon rolls and treats at the snack area. We saw the sign that said they sold a six pack of rolls for $4. We proceed to order, but were told they were only for the prepackaged bag that they were sold out of. They would ring us up for them individually so $1 each. We decide to get just two and were told to get it ourselves in a very dry tone. This was our first time ordering so we didn't know how it worked. So we go to sit in the dining area. There were two tables pushed together and chairs stacked right next to it. The dining area was full of guests eating. We had 8 people with us and proceeded to take the chairs to sit. We were then told by the staff that we couldn't sit there because those tables were "closed" in a rude way. No explanation of why, just that we couldn't sit there or the other 2 tables that were empty. This was at 8:10pm...they close at 9. So what are we to do? The diners present were sympathetic although we were kind of embarassed. Thankfully a nice family offered us their table even though they weren't completely done with their meal. That was sweet and we appreciated it. Next time, the staff should put signs on tables that aren't available and/or practice better customer service communication. *Edited to add that new diners sat at one of the tables that was "closed" off to us and weren't told to move. What the heck?!?* I still love IKEA but maybe train snack staff to have better customer service skills. Felt very unwelcome. read more

As Ikeas go, this one is typical. Good merchandise selection and great displays. Of course the dining area is good. Great selection, food was piping hot and prepared quickly. Customer service, however, is absolutely lacking at this location. Simple questions asked to two employees were met with horrendous attitudes. Kailyn and Micheal are sore spots on this location. The eye rolling, confrontational behavior, and disruptive discourse were flowing. Proper training in customer service is needed. read more

I am still using the duvet covers and matching pillow cases, plus a couple bath towels, purchased at your Beijing store in 2004. I just wash them in cold and hang to dry (or use an electric dryer for a 10 minute to get out the wrinkles). Since then, I have bought other bedding, curtains, storage boxes and shelves, kitchen items, plants, lighting and mattresses, all of which have maintained their style and durability with everyday use. Drove up from NC, had to get my Detolfs...I was expecting it to be crowded, but was quite manageable as far as parking. Got there with the wife around 1100. Ummm...ain't it only Wednesday today? Y'all don't work? I just came back from deployment and I'm on leave, so that's why I'm out and about during hours most people should be working. Is everyone on vacation too? Sheesh! Go to work! At any rate, this is a pretty nice IKEA. Lots of parking even though it was mad crowded. This should be great for Norfolk, but bad for Haynes. Bye-bye Haynes, you suck. Super clean, big restaurant/cafe inside plus another small fast food line at the checkout area. Didn't try going in the restaurant area as it was too crowded (with people who should be at work). Very organized, streamlined for efficient shopping/browsing. If you've never been to an IKEA, check this place out. Cool stuff. 5 STARS FOR the Nice Young Man inside the door. We told him we wanted to pick up 2 toy boxes on wheels and didnt want to go through the whole store. We showed him what we wanted and he quickly gave us the isle and bin # and told us to walk though a closed line. 1 STAR For the LOUD MUSIC being played be the DJ. We couldn't even hear the cashier NOR could she hear us. Due to this we were not able to ask about the IKEA Family Program. Than again she didnt ask us if we had one. 1 STAR SINCE I cant remember my password I Used the reset my password option- email took 2 days for them to send me the reset password email. Finally got a chance to visit this place. It's HUGE!! Tons of cool thinks for any area of your house to make it look how u want. They have stairs and an elevator to get up and down the stairs. Finally tried those meatballs everyone keeps talking about. They were good, was bit on the dry side but the gravy helped. It's a cafeteria like atmosphere like high school lol. Grand Opening Day was a success!! The store was everything and although packed everything was put together so beautifully. They had face painting and balloon artist for the kids enjoyment. All the staff was super supportive and helpful to those around them and eagerly wanted to help. First visit I bought a bunk bed and dresser for my kiddos... will be going back for more!! read more

Honestly this place is so dreadful... and not really a necessary evil. Everything that you can purchase there for cheap can be found elsewhere. The layout is designed to force you to walk from beginning to end instead of normal department stores that allow you to walk in and B line to what you need, pay, and leave. This is like you start in one area of items (for ex. Curtains) and you have to walk through all other forms of textiles, through lighting, through shelving, through whatever else... just to get to plant stuff. Plus the items all come packaged separately (like a curtain rod, sold separately is the bracket, then the hardware, etc.) I've never once left without a headache. Also, you cannot take scooters or anything to help the handicapped OUTSIDE of the store??? So I literally had to push my friend with a broken leg out on a furniture pallet to catch the bus that took us to the lot we parked in (at the outlets). I can't fathom how that's acceptable. God forbid a wounded war veteran come for some Swedish meatballs and be met with that crap. The two stars are only because I like the plant pots I purchased. read more

Went to the store for bookshelves. After spending a leisurely two hours walking through , picking up UPC's to collect /purchase and having lunch, we reached the end and NONE of the items were in stock. Not a single thing. Felt like a wasted two hours. The bookshelves were back stocked for 4-6 weeks. I placed my name on the list to get a text when they were in, not to place an order (that would have been too convenient), just be notified . When I received this text at 10 pm (*while out of town*), I immediately placed an order to pick up. This was Friday evening and since then I've received a text and two emails saying if I didn't pick it up- they would cancel my order and refund my money. I called customer service and changed the order to Tuesday pick up when I was back in town and received an email confirmation. Last night a rep called at 2030 and said if I didn't pick it up by 2100 they would cancel /refund. The store closes at 2000. This level of blatant disrespect for customer service solidifies I will never shop at an IKEA again. read more

I have waited for years to get a local IKEA. Finally this year we got one. I have been there multiple times already. I finally started to budget for the items I wanted to buy and today I went to get a shelving unit I had made room for in my living room. I found it in the showroom and snapped a pic of the locator number. It I couldn't find it. So i sought help. The rep told me that they didn't stock that item and that it had to be shipped to me from the warehouse. I was SO disappointed. So much so that I didn't even want to eat meatballs afterward. And while I'm posting grievances, WHY do they put rechargeable batteries near the checkout but no chargers? I asked someone and she said she didn't know with an attitude. I'm very upset with what I used to think was a store that spoke to my style and budget. *sigh read more

We visited today and had a nice visit. The store is right off the highway and they have a parking lot and a garage. The extra parking made it easy to get in and out. As usual I feel like I can live in this store. We spent about 3-4 hours and had lunch in the cafeteria. Check out was fast and really easy. We had planned to go somewhere else for dinner but the kids were hungry so we decided to eat here after having shopped for about an hour. Big mistake. We were there on a Sunday evening and there was very little left. There was no salmon, the fries were limp, and the salad was wilted. The workers were quite a miserable, unsmiling bunch and when I asked for freshly cooked fries, they acted as though I just asked them to go out back and churn a pound of butter. I have visited this store three times, each and every time it was a challenge to purchase things. The furniture quality is minimal but the prices are great. That would be if I was ever able to actually get a product in my hand to purchase. The entire purchasing process is a nightmare. Copy a number go downstairs, find it's not in stock, go back up find another number repeat the process a few more times before giving up and going to another furniture store. I don't suggest using this company for anything other than a day of window shopping. read more

Took my boyfriend here for the first time and he was skeptical of IKEA when I described it as a mall of affordable furniture and dream rooms with a cafeteria for when we got hungry. He didn't believe me, so I let him formulate his own opinion and now he's going back to buy new things for his apartment. We started our IKEA date with some food. The Swedish meatballs were a must, but not the best that I've had compared to other IKEAs. We had some of their Swedish chocolate desserts and ended up buying some for the ride home. After eating, we walked around following every arrow into a new room that we wanted in which he couldn't believe that everything in that room was under $900,$1300, etc. Now from personal experience, SOME things from IKEA are not the best. Most, if not everything, you have to build yourself. My word of advice would be to use your best judgment- if the material looks/feels cheap chances are that it is and won't last long. I like ikea for things here and there, but would not build a whole room from it. I think it's the perfect place to buy college dorm room furniture or cute accent furniture and the little things like decor or utensils. read more
