We've gone twice now, both times the place was pretty much empty. A sunday night and a Saturday night. Was slightly concerning for dinner time to be so slow but it also was nice not dealing with other folks. The second visit was very strange as our food took forever, yes we had one couple ahead of us and one pick up order but it still took over 20 minutes for our first roll and our daughters avocado roll arrived last and an hour after ordering. This was just strange but they only had one sushi chef working. Another issue was our omakase orders, one was just a Tina roll and the other was the surf n turf roll. Which both rolls are totally fine but it wasn't what I thought I'd get when ordering omakases. Also the ginger that say was really flavorless, I've never had such watery bland ginger before. Being in the old Japanese blossom build it has plenty of space, and with the lack of customers the parking lot was a lot easier to deal with compared to when it was JB. No music was playing but it was well lite and didn't have any noticeable smells. If we could remove the odd Saturday night dinner it would rank higher. But that second visit was a huge miss from time to flavor. read more

NOT WORTH THE TIME AND MONEY! We went on a Tuesday night to try the new Japanese restaurant in town, with a 4.3 stars on Yelp. We ordered Ramen - hubby with Challenge Ramen, Ikkyu Ramen for my son and I got the Tonkatsu Ramen. We also got an order of soft shell crab and an order of the crunchy roll. We were the only customers in the restaurant. We should have run outside; it was almost like a premonition of how epic a failure it would be. We were very disappointed with the food that we had. Nothing close to authentic Japanese food. The soup is watery and bland, needs seasonings. The instant Tonkatsu ramen at Costco has more flavor. The meat has no seasoning and tastes like it was boiled in plain water. The tempura is too doughy and very salty! The pork belly was seared without any seasoning at all. Don't waste your time and money on this place, there are other Japanese food in Chico. Was the chef absent when we went there, or are all the other ratings at Yelp fraud? We don't know. We still ended up paying the full price, but just because we understand employees need to get paid, but we will never be going again. (At least the service and ambience were good) read more

Husband says 4, I'm saying 3/3.5 until I try it a second time. Had edamame, miso soup, and 3 rolls (spicy veggie, Chico, Philly). It seems like a majority of their rolls include surimi which I'm not a fan of. Service was good even through there is one server for the entire place. Been twice, and each time left disappointed. First time, inorderrd 2 things on the menu and was told they not only don't have those dishes, but haven't even started carrying the ingredients altogether. Said in 1 week they be offering the dishes on their menu. Odd, but ok. Came in a month later for said dishes, and NOPE! Still not offered, and STILL on the menu, and no clue when they'll ever offer them. Freaking WTF?! Each time I had to settle for bland food, that I only got, instead of walking out, because who I was dining with likes their food,which was different than what I could eat. Very difficult to communicate with the server, as well. Any slight alteration, andnyou won't get what you asked for. read more

The food here was amazing! We got the tonkotsu ramen, gyoza, rainbow roll, and two spicy California rolls. Everything was made fresh and I honestly regretted not getting more of the sushi! The price was also one of the more affordable options that I've seen in regard to sushi and Japanese cuisine. Service was very attentive and friendly. And the ambiance was simple but classy. I loved the interior a lot and their sushi bar has a great setup! I was sad to see that they haven't been getting a lot of business so I hope that changes soon! I had really high hopes for this place until I ordered sashimi of seven pieces. They did give me eight, but it was all tuna... I did order to go so it could differ from in-house treatment however two rolls & seven pieces of sashimi with edamame cost $70.... The roll was more expensive than sashimi which I've never heard of and it was supposed to come with 2 shrimp or maybe they misheard me however it never came.. overall will not be back again... read more

Went here for lunch about a month ago. It was a late lunch on a weekday and we were the only patrons in the place which normally would make me nervous but it was a late lunch. That said the service was excellent! The food was also excellent and the fish very fresh. They really nailed the ambiance in this small space. The lighting not too bright but still bright enough to see the food your eating. Good choice of appropriate music playing lightly in the back ground. Our server, sorry forgot his name, was super nice and while he struggled a little with the English language he expressed his desire to learn more so he could speak better English. He asked me if I could help teach him to which I replied, "your asking the wrong hillbilly"! All in all a great experience and looking forward to going again today for lunch. read more

My family tried Ikkyu last week for the first time. We were greeted at the door and sat immediately. The waiter was very attentive and friendly. We had appetizers and sushi rolls all of which were delicious. The food came out in a timely matter and the waiter checked on us throughout the meal. The fish was fresh and flavorful. The Chico Roll was fantastic! My husband's ramen bowl was HUGE! The tempura vegetables were perfect. (not too heavy or greasy) it was a cold rainy night, and the spicy miso soup hit the spot! The service was timely and the food was brought out quickly. It was a quiet Wednesday night, so not too many people. The atmosphere is more relaxed. The prices were on par with other sushi restaurants. I don't know if this is a new restaurant but this is one of the better one I had in Chico. The shrimp tempura was very good but a little pricey for just 4. My bf had the challenge ramen and in his opinion is the best ramen we had tried in Chico. We been to Coco's Ramen, Momona, and Izakaya Ichiban and didn't care for their ramen. The dynamite sushi was very good and nice thing about it was it didn't fall apart when I picked it up. Nice atmosphere as well and service was good. read more

The owner is incredibly nice and made our sushi himself! We really enjoyed the freshness of the ingredients and the care with the food was made! We had the Crunchy Tempura, the Crunchy Texas Roll, the Jimmy and even tried the Omakase. It was all super delicious! The prices and portions seem to be the best in town too. UPDATE: Tried this placed again. Food was still good but we ordered it to go and waited over an hour for the food after they told us it would be ready in 35 minutes. Called in at 7pm, left the house at 7:40pm, got to restaurant at 7:50pm and didn't get our order until 8:30. Only one server and one cook. Sushi rolls were significantly smaller this trip. I was a fan of Japanese Blossoms and came to Ikkyu with a friend recently for a noon lunch. I ordered a poki bowl with tuna. The entire experience was odd from the beginning. There were two other tables with customers but, soon, we were the only people in the restaurant. My poki bowl was absolutely terrible, no flavor, no interesting contents and came in a very small bowl for a large price. My friend's dish was also a disappointment to her. The server disappeared and never came over to check on us once even to ask if we wanted more water. After an hour, I had to get up and shout to ask if anyone was still there. Finally, she came out and brought us the bill. The whole experience was disappointing on all levels. Unfortunately, I will never return due to the bad food, terrible service and strangeness of the entire meal. read more

I'm relieved to say that Ikkyu is as-good if not better than Japanese Blossom (previous business that was here). The staff is great, providing fast and friendly service, and the food carries the rest of the experience home. I waited until I'd dined here twice before finalizing this review, just to make sure it was consistent. Both times my family had a great meal and a good outing. Ambiance is nearly identical to how it was before - looks like they sold the entire place to the new owners as-is. But that's a plus for me, as I enjoyed the look and feel of JB (no need to fix what isn't broken). As a temporary benefit, crowds are light - I think people are still rediscovering this gem. I can't imagine it staying that way for much longer as word gets out, though. This is easily my favorite sushi spot in town, and I've been to all of them. Great traditional rolls, fun custom rolls, and a nice selection of non-sushi stuff too. read more

The food and I am not a fan of ginger. They put it in the dressing in your salad and they make a ginger dressing and put it over your rice don't care for the taste. I like to put my own soy sauce or eat it plain we ordered the Bento box with Trampa came out of her machine . The Shrek tempura it was all dough. You could barely see the shrimp . and we're from the Bay Area we know what good sushi is. I do not recommend this place. Sorry to say, but I had to give it a try because it had so many stars.
