Barryville is not a hot bed of culinary options, to say the least. We came into town to go camping and were soon amazed by the fact that the local grocery store closed at 7pm and we had brought no food for dinner. We followed the smell of delicious pizza and found this place. There were several carry out specials and we chose one with wings/pizza to take back to our campsite. There seemed to be a steady stream of people who were also ordering pizza that night, so it seems to be a local favorite. After waiting about 15 minutes, our pizzas were finally ready. We got one large cheese, one large pepperoni, 20 wings, and a soda for just under $40, not too bad. I only tasted the pepperoni pizza, which was quite large and very heavy with toppings. After camping for the weekend and realizing we had ran out of food, we decided to drive around a bit and try to find some food. When we found a pizza place we were not expecting anything special, given the area we were in, but this place does make some pretty good food. One of my friends ordered the chicken ceasar pizza, which I never thought I would eat, but it was quite delicious. I have already started searching back home to find another place that can hopefully make something similar. We ordered a margherita pizza too and I was more disappointed in that. They used shredded cheese and it had pretty small pieces of basil. Still, if anybody is in the area looking for food I would definitely recommend this place. read more

The staff and food sucks at this place. I have lived in the area my whole life. They use to be great but now the food is extremely under cooked and the staff is very unprofessional. After refusing to help me she walked into the back and began talking very loudly for everyone to here about my husband and I. The owner should be ashamed. Terrible service!!! My Friends and I went there to have dinner, the server kept saying she'd be right with us, but never came. She ended up sending another server over and there were several servers not doing anything that could have at least asked us what we wanted to drink! We finally got our drinks and salad plates which took 10 minutes to get just so we could go to the salad bar which wasn't that great. Our food came and the food was very good, but we opened the Parmesan cheese container because we were having a hard time getting it out and it was rusted on the cap!!! It was disgusting! When we told the server she just said " Oh, sorry" and that was the end of it! I should have asked for a new plate! because I used some of that cheese! My two sons, and I, like to explore the food places in our area. We have experienced all of the pizzerias in Port Jervis, NY, in Slate Hill, NY, in Montague, NJ, and in Matamoras, PA. Yesterday, I discovered Il Castello, in Barryville, NY. I read every review, from every customer. Many of the customer reviews were favorable. Two customer reviews were unfavorable. I asked my sons; "Do you want to go on a pizza adventure?" Of course, they agreed. We traveled 21 miles, from our home in Sparrow Bush, NY, to Barryville, NY. We entered the restaurant, and we were greeted by the friendly waitress. We were promptly seated. The restaurant was clean, and the atmosphere was pleasant. We ordered a large cheese pie, with fresh garlic, and a medium white pie. The service was prompt and friendly. The waitress was attentive. With respect to pizza quality, one son said; "This pizza rates 10/10, on my scale." My other son stated; "Wow! I really enjoyed this pizza." We highly recommend this pizza, and this pizza place. Now I will review some of the morons, ooops I mean well informed reviewers. S H., from Merrick, NY wrote, (9/6/2015) "Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. Besides how this place is horribly over priced, it is gross." [ Dude, I ordered two pies and three sodas. Including the tip, and the taxes, the total bill was about $33. Horribly overpriced? You are an idiot. Also, the restaurant was clean. "Gross" does not apply. ] He also wrote, "What grossed me out was how the woman behind the counter picked up the slice with her BARE HANDS and DRAGGED it across the bottom of the plastic area it was in and ACROSS THE COUNTER. "Wahhhh! People were staring at me. Oh the dread. Tito, give me a tissue." ] He also wrote, "Despite the dining room having plenty of space, we were ushered over to the smaller, waiting room. We brushed that off but then our waiter didn't come back to even check on us for at least 30 minutes. When the waiter finally came to take our order he rushed us." [ There is no "smaller, waiting room" in the restaurant. Parallel universe, much? ] "Food took forever to finally come out and when it finally did, it was nothing but mediocre." This place has the best pizza I've ever had and I was born and raised in NYC. I cannot comment on the other food, but the others in my party ordered off the menu and they were extremely satisfied with the quality of the food. After a long day of water rafting my family and I were looking for the closest place to get some pizza and unfortunately Barryville doesn't have many options this was it. The last time I checked, this restaurant was located in New York, in the year 2015 so I just cannot fathom the level of racism and unprofessionalism that my family and I experienced here. It left an absolutely bitter taste in all of our mouths. If we did not have young kids with us that were starving, we would have just walked out and left. As soon as we walked into the restaurant, we were barely greeted and just stared at by the other patrons. The restaurant was divided into two sections, with one being the dining room and another separate room for people waiting for take out orders. Despite the dining room having plenty of space, we were ushered over to the smaller, waiting room. We brushed that off but then our waiter didn't come back to even check on us for at least 30 minutes. When the waiter finally came to take our order he rushed us. Food took forever to finally come out and when it finally did, it was nothing but mediocre. Lucky for them, they seem to be the only pizza place in the area which is why they have patrons. We have lived here for quite a long time, and alway enjoyed their food, but over the past year or two, it just is not the same. We just had pasta with broccoli and garlic/oil. The pasta was not cooked, the broccoli was brown, just not good. The bread was not fresh. Just not what it used to be. It's a shame because it's local. My wife and I went to Il Castello's tonight as we have hundreds of times through the years. Pizza is usually good but service is hit or miss. Tonight, after waiting 20 plus minutes for our drinks we had our first problem. A simple cup of Hot Chocolate took longer than the rest of the drinks. The explanation was that they didn't have any hot water and "It would take some time for it to heat up". Really? A full kitchen and hot water is an issue. The waitress brought out the Hot Chocolate several minutes later and it was barely warm. My wife asked for it to be reheated and the waitress said she would make another one for her. The second cup of Hot Chocolate came out a few minutes later and again was nowhere near hot. My wife said forget about it and the waitress said she would take it off the bill. Another problem was a cold beer was poured into a warm / hot pitcher. I could feel the heat on the handle when she served it to me which ruined the nice cold beer. Our food came out and was decent but when we asked for half a pizza and some calzones to be wrapped up the waitress just handed us a box and a couple of tin's. Now this would be fine except they have NEVER - and I'm talking 100's of visits, have just given us boxes to wrap up ourselves. Our past waitresses have Always wrapped up our doggie bags for us. I just came out of the hospital and maneuvering the boxes and tins on an (UNCLEARED) dirty table was awkward and painful, then we got the bill. I am very good with numbers and just by looking at the final price I knew something was wrong. I didn't know what but knew there was an error. Upon examining the check, I saw it was only a $1.02 error, but still an error nevertheless. The menu said half toppings were $1.50 and we had half sausage and half bacon which should have added to $3. For some unknown reason the charge was $3.02. Now I really don't care about 2 cents but wanted an explanation. I was told that bacon is expensive and that's why the extra charge. She said they charged a me for 1 1/2 toppings which should have been $3.50 so the 2 cents still didn't make any sense. Then we noticed that my wife's chicken calzone (without the ricotta) cost $1 more than my sausage calzone. Nowhere on the menu did it say chicken cost more. The explanation again was that chicken was expensive so they had to charge more. Now for a lousy $1.02 for long time customers the price should have been waived but instead Maryann explained to my wife that there was a new menu and prices have changed- OK Fine so where is the new menu? No answer... This whole thing might seem petty but I operate on principle and customer satisfaction which is obviously a foreign thought process for Maryann. In a small town you shouldn't tick off your long term customers for a lousy $1.02. because it's not the weekend first time campers that's going to help pay your salary during the long cold winter. read more

I have been going here for years. It used to be so good-the food and the service. Now, not so much. The service during the afternoon is very good, but I was in there tonight and almost walked out. It's Good Friday, which is always a busy night for pizzerias. We walked in at around 8:25pm. We waited to be seated as the sign said and stood there for about 2-3 minutes as multiple staff walked right past us and never acknowledged us. Finally a waitress said we could sit wherever we wanted-there were multiple open tables, and some had yet to be cleaned off. We sat down and waited at least 5 minutes for someone to take our drink order, and that was only after we had to yell to get the attention of the waitress-she was busy filling the salad bar one bowl at a time. Then she gave us some story about how she unplugged the phone for 2 hours because it was so busy and why should anyone put in an order since it was going to take 2 hours to get a pizza. All we wanted was some soda-which she got wrong as well. Mind you, there were 6 tables occupied and another waitress working. After we finally got our sodas it took another 5 minutes for her to get our order. Our pizza was ok and came out in a timely manner. All the blame cannot be put on the staff. The place has been remodeled 3 times in the 10 years we've been going there and seems to get worse with each remodel. The walls are a light color and you can see they've rarely been cleaned. Half of the staff are so miserable it comes across in their lack of customer service skills. We stopped going for about 3 years because the quality of the food went down so dramatically it wasn't worth going anymore. And we live 2 miles away. Being in the sticks, that's practically next door, but we travel over 30 minutes just to get something to eat when we want to go out because it's rarely a pleasant experience here.
