Took my friends out for Christmas celebration last night and we sat in the bar at the center round table. Had the worst service I have ever had at a restaurant. We waited 30 minutes to order our drinks. It took another 30 minutes to get them, we asked for bread and finally one of my friends called the manager over and asked for bread again when we got our dinners two of us ordered salmon one ordered Rosemary chicken. The salmon was cold and very salty mashed potatoes were cold. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. I think you get the point. The guy that was the waiter was very overwhelmed had no help. We have been coming for Christmas celebrations for years and we will pick another place next year. read more

Came in for dinner this weekend with a few friends after some holiday shopping and had a great experience! The drinks were delicious, the food tasted just like it did on our recent trip to Italy and our server, Lauren, was so attentive and sweet. For the cost vs service and quality, you could go and find other places for a better value. There were tons of flies that did t allow us to have a good dinner to start with. Beware there are no refills for "free" on anything. Everything is charged and you would hope the service will at least be above great with a $450 check for a family of 6. Drinks were not refilled including water and letting the customer know if you would charge extra would be appreciated. Steak was okay and pizza was good but then again, not for that cost. read more

I really like the atmosphere of this restaurant. It's very comforting when you walk in. A friend joined me for dinner. They had never been here before. After looking over the menu we ordered fish. I ordered salmon and ask if I could get risotto instead of the mashed potatoes. When the salmon came it had four shrimp laying on top of it. Not reading shrimp was in the dish, I asked our waitress why it had shrimp on it. I explained to her that I didn't eat shellfish. Her response was, "no the dish didn't call for it but I put it on. Are you OK if I just scrape it off" Say what!??. That's exactly what she did...she simply scraped it off the top of the salmon. I started to eat the risotto and realized it had pork in it. I don't eat pork! Who puts pork in risotto with salmon? Again when our waitress returned I explained to her that I don't eat pork and why did I have pork in my risotto. Oy! Needless to say I didn't exactly enjoy my dinner. I stepped away to go to the restroom and when I came back our waitress had given my friend a card for a free drink for the faux pas on my meal. Say what!?? I've been to this restaurant before, and it's typically really good. They fell short tonight. The last time I visited this restaurant I ordered the butter not squash pasta. It was really good. The pasta was al dente like I like it, and the sauce was full of flavor and really delicious. Would I eat here again? Absolutely. read more

Nice looking venue with high ceilings and open space. Has a pretty upscale feel and some marginally upscale pricing but the food and service was just under par. Perhaps its due to the recent revival of dining in options but everyone seemed flustered and rushed. We had to constantly wave people down for help. We were sat with no utensils. No bread basket either. We noticed everyone else had both, so waved down a runner to get us some. They did so but forgot the bread. Asked someone else for bread and they didnt bring out butter or oils. Asked for both from a 3rd person and he said something to our waiter and he runs off and grabs us more bread - in which at that time we said we have plenty of bread but hoping for butter and oils - he says right away! And brings back a handful of butter, no oils. But thats all understandable... however if im paying more than $15 for some pasta i dont expect huge portions but i expected good pasta... the rigitoni bolognase is what i had and though it wasnt horrible... a box of bertollinis rigatoni with ragu tomato sauce and some ground beef could have tasted the same for me. The beef carpaccio was decent and the calamari was so so as, personal preference i would have liked it more breaded and crispy/crunch exterior. Overall - subpar experience with subpar food. Id rather spend a little less for more portions at an olive garden or a little more for a better quality meal. read more

My sister made a reservation for our family of 20, to celebrate my nephews baptism. I love the decor and the ambiance. We had a prix fixe menu that was incredible. House salad Entree - choice of salmon, NY steak, pork medallion and primavera pasta Dessert - choice of sorbet or chocolate cake Everything was delicious. Shout out to our assigned server Jason. Cannelloni Forno- one word: DISAPPOINTED It's beautiful inside and out which brought my boyfriend and I here. Seeing that we are new to the area we are checking out places. All I can say was the look did not match the taste. I should of known better then to set expectations so high because t mostly only leads to disappointments. I was very well impressed with Jason out server- if it weren't for him I would of probably left. He worked hard to make up for my lack of satisfaction with a dessert- but I didn't like that either. Wine was five star, service five star but considering my main dish was almost as good as something I could make out of an Amy's frozen dinner and they didn't even offer gluten free pasta for it this was right before dinner rush- I can only imagine what the dish would of been like if we had been there for the busiest time of the evening.......no star. If anyone is looking for a restaurant for a private party, IL Fornia will usually provide reasonable accommodations and a private room. And I have had fairly good experiences at private bashes held at both Burlingame and Palo Alto locations. However, this time we had to organize a family dinner in Sacramento area because most of our family lives up there. And it wasn't easy. It took months of preparation. First I called several restaurants and picked the Sacramento/Capital IL Fornia location, but the banquet coordinator at that location was responding sporadically and ended up giving our room away to someone who works at IL Fornia. I was shocked and couldn't believe it. So, my husband who is more patient, tried the Roseville location and we ended up with a much better experience. And it's all because of 'Meredith' the Banquet Coordinator who was a true 'professional'. She was upbeat and helpful with the menu. She accommodated our needs from the moment we started working with her and all through the evening. She had individual menus printed for each of our guests and a completely different one for the children so that they can play with the crayons. I would say she is the best Banquet manager I have worked with so far and I have organized quite a few personal and corporate parties.... Meredith was customer service oriented and sensitive to our needs. the two waitresses that were designated for our event, also provided us with excellent service. Let's not forget the food was great and plenty for our guests. read more

My parent's went all out and invited about 35-40 people for our engagement party and thought Il Fornaio was the perfect place to host the party (they love Il Fornaio!) The space is made to accommodate different size your party due to movable walls, so this time our party was in a much larger space. We did the "heavy appetizers" instead of a sit down dinner which made mingling much easier. The service was impeccable and they continued to walk around and refresh the wine, beer and food the entire three hours. The food was very good especially the pizza and the stuffed mushroom tops. Came here for a dinner with a colleague while on the road. Il Fornaio has a great reputation in the Bay Area, but hadn't been to the one in Rocklin/Roseville. We started with a trip to the bar for a cocktail and met Marcus, who I call an "old fashioned bar-man". He had a scholarly knowledge of everything he had to offer and gave us tastes, opinions and options. Exceptional! Then off to dinner, excellent wine list, took the friendly and knowledgeable server's advice on a great house red wine. Our courses were delicious and we couldn't even finish all the food. We enjoyed ourselves in a great atmosphere and before we knew it, 3-1/2 had elapsed. What a great restaurant. Absolutely the best way to end a morning of Christmas shopping. Hostess was very welcoming and cheerful. She gave us a choice of several seating locations which was nice. My husband and I were trying to decide on a bottle of wine so bartender came over to help us decide. Our waitress was very prompt and professional. We love the decor and design of this restaurant. You are nicely spaced from other customers so you have enough privacy but still open enough to look around. Food was delicious from appetizer to our daughters desert. Il Fornaio had been a restaurant where we celebrated special occasions and enjoyed happy hour on a regular basis with friends. We had a very poor experience there last Christmas Eve. The waiter was inexperienced and he was overwhelmed by the number of people he was attempting to serve. Our food was substandard. My husband was brought the incorrect entree but chose to not create a huge upset for our large party. He later wrote a letter so they could learn and improve. Last Friday night we decided to try happy hour again. It was a huge disappointment and we have vowed not to bother with this establishment again. Five of us arrived at 5 and the bar was completely full. We asked the hostess if we could sit in the restaurant and have appetizers. She advised us that would only be possible if we paid the full price, not the happy hour costs. After discussing the option with our friends we agreed to sit in the restaurant and pay full price. When we asked to be seated...she refused to seat us as she did NOT HAVE A TABLE FOR US, EVEN THOUGH THE RESTAURANT WAS 3/4 EMPTY. THE HOSTESS WAS CURT AND CONDESCENDING. We ended up leaving and going to another restaurant. PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR A RESTAURANT THAT TREATS THEIR PATRONS WITH AN ATTITUDE THAT DISPLAYS APPRECIATION RATHER THAN DISDAIN. read more

I feel so fortunate to have chosen Il Fornaio for my sister's baby shower. They exceeded my expectations every step of the way, and in doing so they created a truly special, memorable event for my family and friends. Setting up the event was a smooth and easy process; Mary was very accessible and documented and implemented every request, no matter how small. She recommended the patio - and while I was uncertain whether this would work for mid-February, the space was incredible. It's fully enclosed, has potted flowers throughout, looks out upon the fountains, has great light, a beautiful fireplace, and is significantly wider than the loggia. It was just a beautiful. We were able to bring our own flowers, favors, and dessert with no fees or downside...I wish my wedding had been so easy to plan! :) For the set-up, we arrived 15 minutes earlier than we'd indicated, but everything was already prepared. They accommodated last-minute requests (moving seats, etc.) immediately, and presented the cupcakes we'd brought professionally in a way that complimented upon the colors we were using. The easel we'd brought didn't support a display, and - before I could even ask for help - they quickly brought out poster board, mounted and secured it beautifully. At certain times they checked on whether to open another bottle of champagne or structure the timing - all with great discretion. Their flexibility with changes in the plans was much appreciated. At another point, we realized my young cousin couldn't eat the dessert we'd brought because it contained nuts. In what seemed like under a minute, they'd brought out a sundae just for her. The most amazing part is that the aspects of a shower that are usually cumbersome - opening gifts and loading them into the car - were facilitated with great effectiveness and speed by the staff. They helped bring over presents, discarded the wrappings, packed the gifts efficiently and even helped us bring the huge load of bulky baby gear over to the cars. No detail was unattended. Refreshingly, there were no surprises with the bill and everything was explained clearly. I am so thankful to the staff at Il Fornaio for making my sister's shower a truly special day for her and highly recommend them! read more

She took my email to send me their Christmas menu, and it's been over a week now, and I still have not received it. Unreliable. Poor service. Will not recommend. read more

This is my first Yelp review - and I'm glad to be writing one for Il Fornaio. I'm not the type to go out of my way to write a review, but the overall wonderful dining / event experience we had at Il Fornaio compelled me to open a Yelp account and write. We celebrated my mom's 70th birthday and everything from the planning to end of the birthday dinner was just perfect. We met with Patty, one of the managers, on a Saturday to go over the planning details, and she helped us with a lot of care and unhurried time. She even gave us suggestions on the types of centerpieces that would look elegant for the room we chose - the Loggia room, towards the back of the restaurant, for 20-25 people. We arrived early to decorate and our server, Shane, warmly introduced himself and Cody to our family and let us know that if there was anything we needed, to feel free to let them know. They were AWESOME!! Shane was so attentive and so in sync with the timing of the food to the tables, my parents' friends' particular requests, the noise / music level, my mom's birthday tiramisu, decor (e.g. bringing out a red tablecloth to coordinate with the flower arrangement) - the attention to detail and coordination were amazingly PERFECT! At one point in the evening, Shane and I laughed and agreed at how great of a team we were - communicating, timing, and working together. He made the evening stress-free for all of us. Everyone could tell that he LOVED what he did and it just exuded in everything. At the end of the evening, when all the guests had left and the family sat together to soak in the moment, Shane came and told us to feel free to take our time and enjoy. Then he brought out more coffee for us. As we were getting ready to leave, he warmly wished my mom a happy 70th birthday. I was just so thankful for everything that I gave him a hug and told him we'd be back and asking for him at our next event. Thank you Shane!! My wife and I went to ll Fornaio for Mother's Day. Our daughter, son-in-law, my son, daughter-in-law and Grandson were treating my wife for Mother's Day. The seven of us ordered our dinner selections. When the food came, only six of the dinners were delivered Almost a half hour later the tagliatelle alla bolognese was presented unbaked evidently in interest of speeding up the process. I think it took a lot a gull to serve a unfinished meal in a supposedly a restaurant of this class. Two scoops of ice-cream and a small cake desert took forever. The reason for this service was because of the busy Mother's day crowd. I would think that is a very poor excuse for restaurant of this caliber. If you can't stand the heat, then you better get out of the kitchen. I would strongly suggest you look else where for a good meal out. Tom read more
