Apparently there was some kind of disconnect because I asked for a few inches off and the guy took off twice the amount I asked for. If I had wanted my hair this short, I'd be happy because the stylist took his time and he did a good job blowing it out and straightening it at the end. I'll like this cut in a couple of months when my hair reaches the length I wanted. After reading my review, the salon called and apologized, which is definitely appreciated, but in the end my hair is still much shorter than I wanted. read more

Great little salon in Cleveland Park. The hairstylists appeared to me to be all Turkish men and are pretty charming too....not that that's a good reason to decide where to get your hair cut, but it doesn't hurt. Haircut & blowdry came to $70, but with the 20% off discount for my first cut there for mentioning Yelp, my total came to $56. My stylist was Cem (pronounced like "Jim") and he was great. Gave me exactly what I asked for and did it fast. I must admit the price is a little steep for me for a basic cut and I won't be able to use my 20% discount again since it will be my 2nd time. However, it was such a pleasant experience and it's hard to find a salon that offers haircuts for women that are that much cheaper than $70, I'll probably go back. read more

Best manicure + pedicure in the District! I have been going to Imaj since I moved here. I have never had such a fantastic mani/pedi before. Lynn is a perfectionist! My polishes last for a week! Literally, my nails grow out before they start to chip. So worth the money! She is my 'go to' anytime I have an event or just want a salon day. I have also had her wax my eyebrows, and now I don't trust my brows to anyone else. Everyone at the salon is very professional, and you can tell the owners run their business with pride. I have had my haircut by John- master of the razor. And I have had my hair blowdried (blown dry?) by Cem, and he made it super smooth and straight. I recommend them to everyone. I recently moved back to DC and have been trying out various places for hair. I need a fuss-free style that looks ok on an aging face with too many chins, but something has changed, whether it is the water or the texture of my now-graying hair. What used to be wavy and almost curly now limps and droops. After a few really terrible cuts at other places, I found Imaj. Reggie found an excellent semi-permanent color that lasts very well and looks good even as it fades over time, making the gray that is growing out blend in with the colored hair. Wow! I have gotten my hair cut at six places in D.C., and all of the results were terrible. I'm not picky either; I'm just a straight-haired guy who prefers hair to be even on both sides and for my hair not to have a long spot near the back or to make it look like I am bald. One would think it isn't too much to ask. Finally, I checked out Imaj and discovered that Murat knows how to cut men's hair with a brilliant combination of speed and accuracy. The results are always so stunning that I feel like I'm missing something and that he can't possibly have cut that much hair that quickly (I have a lot of hair). I've been there twice and I'm definitely coming back. The only reason it's just four stars is that even though there's a discriminatory price differential between men's and women's cuts, $30 is still a little pricey for a men's cut. As a woman with stick straight long hair, I'm constantly look for a great trim at a good price. My hair is simple, as is my request- no more than 1 inch off and minimal styling... 1. This review is for the fellas. Not sure what a big blow-out is, but it's not a flat tire at 80mph... 2. I've never been happy getting haircuts. Maniacally bad haircuts on Navy bases in the 80s have scarred me. 3. Prior to discovering (via Yelp and a friend), I was quite happy driving 45 minutes for a cut (each way) because I am so distrusting of new barbers/stylists. 4. Imaj gives a great haircut. If I move, I will be doing the drive to see the guys in there. Pros: Excellent cut no matter which guy you get. Cost-neutral for the city. This place is not Supercuts. And that is a great thing. Cons: None. Unless you think calling for a reservation is a con. (Semi)Cons: English is decidedly a second language here. If you must give lots of special instructions etc. you need to know in advance which guys, with confidence, will understand you. But my first cut was with a guy who did not speak a lick and it was great. Knowing Spanish, by the way, won't help. I've been playing a personal detective game (rather than just asking) and I have it narrowed down to far-eastern Europe (Bulgaria) or the mid-east (Turkish? Arabic? Farsi? Who knows!!!). The truth is, these guys know how to cut hair. So let them do it and, free of having to make small-talk, enjoy a good read or whatever. read more

I'm generally not a fancy hair salon type of guy, but after one ridiculously crappy haircut (see my other review) at one place, and three mediocre haircuts at Diego's, I decided to switch it up and try the hair salon in my hood. It was a bit of a tough pill to swallow to pay $35 plus tip for a haircut, but I gotta say, it is a relief to sit in a chair with a hair stylist who knows how to use a pair of scissors. I finally caved in 2009 and went to get my first professional hair cut and I don't think I can ever look back. I have been an Imaj regular for 3 plus years and I cannot recommend another place more. This turkish-owned salon is awesome. Jean, the owner, is as friendly and charasmatic as it gets. He also listens to his clients and is able to juggle the right balance of length and style to the hair. I've been getting my hair cut from Lynn for the last year and she's a class-act as well. Very professional and thoughtful. It seems like she can just tell what I want when I walk in there. She's also unbelievably patient and I hear she's also got some serious skills on women's hair too. I am a stay at home mom of a 14 month old toddler, with an extremely busy schedule. When I take time out for myself to get my hair done, the least of my expectations are to be treated with respect and politeness. I walked in without an appointment, but the stylist took me on as I had just had a simple hair color job ( I appreciate that as I can never plan ahead and was desperately in need to get my grays treated) I was told that the job has assigned to this woman who I am not even sure is a qualified hair technician but I think hey! ok it's not a problem, a simple one color job, she can't go wrong! She was so bad with the application I had hair dye dripping all over my face. When I asked her to clean it and be careful, she turned around and had the audacity to tell me that this is the way color is applied and I probably haven't been to salons enough to know any better!!!! I was so appalled by the behavior of this woman to not even apologize and then turn around and talk so rudely to a customer who was being charged a pretty substantial price for a simple coloring job and expected the technician to at least have their basic application technique straight!! So after her complete denial of my blackened face, I had to clean my face myself with absolutely no assistance from her!! And then, to add to my frustration, the other employees started chattering in their own language in a sniggering fashion! My hair color was completed by another stylist who stepped in and who continued making small talk as if nothing had happened! Appalling service! I will never go back. How do people get away with insulting customers this way!!!! And yeah, if I had the option I would give this salon 0 stars for a lousy customer experience!!! read more

He always know exactly what my hair needs to stay healthy and always makes sure that I have the most flattering cut. If I could give this place zero stars I would have. While the atmosphere is pleasant enough this is by far the worst hair cut I've gotten in years. I mean, leave the salon in tears worst. I went to this place after my go-to place closed and after reading the good yelp reviews that most people seem to have given based on their experience at this place. I've spent the past 6 months trying to grow my hair out and so the one thing I said was to please take max 1/2 inch off the length while adding in some long layers. Jim, the stylist, said that was fine and then proceeded to cut about 3 inches off my hair. He cut uneven layers that he then flipped outward when he blow dried and I left feeling so embarrassed of how my hair looked that I literally put it up in a pony tail (what little of it still fit in a pony tail) as soon as I walked out the door. He didn't take the time to really listen to what I wanted and cut so harshly that he actually pulled hair out and didn't apologize. He worked so quickly that he was done with my cut and "style" in less than 35 minutes. I would have rather he slow down and take the time to actually focus. He seemed so oblivious to what he was doing and how hard he was pulling on my head/hair that I wondered if he was high. During the blow dry (before which he put no styling product in my hair to guard against the heat) I could smell burning hair and at one point he even used his mouth to blow on it. Its now going to take me several more months just to get my hair back to where it was this morning before this dreadful experience. I dont have the money to really splurge on hair cuts but decided this time it was worth it since it had been awhile. It came to $80 and I will literally NEVER return to this salon. I have been in DC for 16 years. I have used many hair stylists until I found the one, about 6 years ago; Murat Akdemir. Let me first give you background about me for you to understand what a difficult client I could be. I am a very particular person especially when it comes to my hair. I also have a very controlling character where I like things done the way I want. When I first met Murat for my hair, I was nervous but as soon as I met him at his salon, the way he approached me, the way he smiled made me feel so comfortable. He asked me to sit at a chair and offered me a glass of wine. it was a Friday afternoon. I am surprised that I even remember that afternoon about 6 years ago. Murat asked me what I would like to have. I told him that I want a cut and highlights. He asked how short I want the cut, the color. The only thing I told him, just make it so it suits me. Me, being the controller, basically told him to do what he likes. Trust me it was not the wine effect, I had not even had my wine at that point. He actually gave me a layered hair cut with dark red highlights. Before I reveal how it turned out, I want you to remember that I told him to do as he likes. When I looked at the mirror, I was amazed and actually could not believe that it was my hair. The color of red was perfect, the cut, the layers were done in such way, I could not believe that my hair could look that good. But Murat made that happen. When I left the salon that evening, I had to go out and show my hair off. The minute I left the salon, I had three ladies walking by and complimented me on my hair. Of course I showed Murat from the window and told them that they have to go to him for their hair. Since that day, I have not used anyone else but Murat. Murat has excellent vision in a sense that he can look at you and know what would look good on you. I had long hair before as you can tell from the layers I mentioned. Murat told me that I should go short and that it would suit me. I told him "yeah right" and this is the first time I actually questioned him. He said let's try, and he promised that it would look great. I let him do his thing as usual. When I first saw the cut, I was shock at first, and when I came to my senses, I could not believe that it was me. I looked like I just walked out of a magazine. It was the best decision I have made about my hair. If you look at my picture, you will see that I have short hair and I have been using it past 4 years and I love it. Every time I leave the salon, I get compliments right and left. I love that feeling and I owe all this to Murat. My experience with Murat has been always excellent. Every time I left his salon I had the "WOW" reaction from everyone including me. Finding Murat as my stylist is probably the second best thing that ever happened to me (First one was my Lasik Eye Doctor ). Every women needs an excellent hair stylist and I found the one for me. Ladies and gentleman, I definitely recommend Murat to everyone. I cannot tell you enough that you will absolutely be coming back, over and over and thanking me, over and over for recommending him. I also would like to comment about the Imaj Hair Salon Murat now works at. I love this salon. I love the atmosphere, people are so welcoming, and they have wonderful receptionists that are so ready to help you with whatever you want and need. After you have been there couple times, you feel like you are at home. The owners Can and Recep, are always there and always so accommodating. Can, always takes a minute from his busy schedule, remembers to stop by next to me and asks how I am doing and I appreciate that. The whole place feels like a family environment and you can't help but feel that you are one of the members. It is a great feeling that people are so warm, sweet and you feel comfortable. It actually feels like Happy Hour but better. I apologize that I wrote a long review but I hope that I at least entertained you. This review is way over due and I wanted to do justice to Murat. I have super thick hair and enjoy its length. The stylist went much shorter than I asked, but I can deal with that - hair grows back. I specifically asked for layers though bc my hair is so thick and just puffs out if not cut correctly. He put in no layers, just a straight cut on the bottom (my hair actually lines up at the bottom in a way that makes it look like a wig) -- just awful. I have a massive fluff ball on head and will definitely need to get it cut elsewhere but I dont want to loose any more length... Oh, to top it off, drys my curly hair with a blow drier so I walk out looking like a disaster (something another yelper mentioned as well). First thing I did when I got home it washed and restyled my hair. Worst experience ever. If you have simple hair, then its probably fine but those with thick hair or looking for some style should stay away. read more

This is a cute corner salon located a few minutes walk away from my place. It's a clean and cozy room, friendly service, not too crowded if you can go early in weekdays. Recep was really nice and did a great job with my hair colour. Apparently he also cares about customers' feedback, which is a good sign of taking business seriously, I was thrilled that he called me back about it and invited me over. LOVE Imaj Hair Salon! I was hesitant to try somewhere new after having some bad hair experiences in the past but I'm so glad I did! I have been going to Recep since 2012 now and I love the results! My hair is naturally curly and can seem dull when it's straightened but Recep always does the best job blowing out my hair! If you want big full curls for an event or just a simple blow out with a lot of body - he'll do a great job! I also have naturally dark brown hair so it can be nerve wrecking hoping highlights don't turn out brassy but my highlights have always looked very natural. I have been asked many times how I get my natural highlights and I have to tell them about Recep! I would definitely recommend checking out Imaj Hair Salon! This is a long overdue review. I have been going to Imaj fro about 8 years ever since I moved the Forest Hill area. Let me begin by saying, I am one those people who loves getting a blowdry, makes me feel great. That being said I have tried quite a few places in DC & VA and hands down Ercan (John) is the best for blowdrys. He is very good at haircuts as well and prices are comparable to Dry Bar blow drys. I have recommended this place to many of my friends and colleagues in the are and they were not disappointed! In addition, Rukiye (Ruki) is the best for eyebrow threading or waxing in the area. I have been getting threading for past 15 years and have tried Dupont Threading, Threads, mall kiosks, yes those places are good, however what sets Ruki apart is that she listens, takes her time until your eyebrows are the perfect shape. She works 9 to 5 (tues through sat). If you are someone who loves to have the perfect hair and eyebrows do give this place a try! read more

Just had a really excellent experience at Imaji. I had never really noticed it sitting there at the end of Cleveland Park but a few people I know swear by it. I hadn't cut my hair in, um, way too long and one Saturday around 3pm got fed up and decided to chop of 6 inches. 15 minutes later I was in the chair showing the stylist (sorry, can't remember his name!) a pinterest picture. I was a little nervous bc he didn't speak enough English for me to tell him what I wanted -- instead the lovely women working the front translated. No need to be nervous AT ALL. I love my cut so much and felt totally confident as he snipped away. Whatever he did brought new life to my 9 month old balayage, so much so that people keep asking if I got it redone. It was my first time so I took advantage of the 20% discount and for around 85 with tip this was a freaking steal. Will definitely be going back next time I need it! read more

Keith at Imaj saved my hair when I had it absolutely butchered at Bang. When I told the receptionist my story, Keith offered to take me later that day -- his schedule was booked, but he gave me an after-hours appointment just because I sounded so miserable. I paid $60 for my cut & style -- neither of which were incredible, but to be honest, the stylist at Bang was given me such a crap cut that Keith didn't have much to work with, especially because I begged him not to take off much more length. I've lived in Cleveland Park for a while and would periodically stop in and get trims here. They've always been stellar. I did get a bad blowout/style here once on NYE, but every other time has left me walking out of the salon feeling like I'm going to a photo shoot. A chic one. Last Thursday was my wake up call. I got a great cut by the owner, Recep, and decided it was time to commit for good. Somehow, he gave my winter-drab hair some body with great angling and long layers. I just moved to forest hills. I was looking for a place for a last minute updo for a military ball I had 12/06/13. While browsing yelp, I found Imaj. I called a day or two before the ball and asked if they had any last minute opening, they set up with Franco. I'm rather particular so I brought two pictures with me so the stylist would have either to choose from. One was blatantly a more difficult style than the other so I assumed Franco would go for the easier do. Upon entering the salon, the front desk staff wasn't the friendliest but that impression was quickly wiped away as I met Franco. He got right down to business and asked what the updo was for and what my ideas were. I told him I had a couple ideas and showed him the pictures, surprisingly he picked the more difficult style! He quickly got to work, making casual conversation but not the forced conversation I have come across in some other salons. I have to say, my hair looked identical to the picture I brought in! I received compliments the second I walked out of the salon. Before leaving I discussed Franco's suggestions for a future cut and color since I recently moved to the area, his ideas were well thought and fabulous. Extremely upset at my experience today. Instead of the slight layers I asked for, Yunis only thinned my hair out. I was a little unsure of how I felt about my hair thus far, but I decided to trust his professional abilities and judgement, and believed that he would know what to do after years of experience. I was wrong. When I asked for a simple straight blow out he decided to go and give me curls and make my hair huge to the point where I looked absolutely ridiculous. He put tons of hairspray in my hair as well and I looked absolutely horrible. My friend's experience was almost worse as well, it was not just me, I have included a picture of hers but unfortunately was too horrified to take a picture of mine. However, the worst part was the treatment when paying at the end. When walking in, we were told by the receptionist that the entire thing (wash, cut, and blow dry) would cost $60. However, at the end she just decided that mine would have to be $80 because of my styling (which was the opposite of what I asked for and made me look absolutely terrible). It was not only the horrible styling that made my time at the salon so upsetting, it was the judgmental and rude treatment we experienced. My stylist at Imaj was Victor and he is truly an artist when it comes to hair. My husband and I met Victor while having dinner at Zaytinia and he mentioned he was a hairstylist at Salon Imaj. After my last three bad haircuts at a salon in Tyson's Corner, I was desperate to find a hairstylist who knows how to do layers properly, so I made an appointment to have my hair cut by him. I have long, somewhat thick hair that I wear straight. Upon arriving, I noticed that the salon itself is clean and nicely decorated with a very personable receptionist. What surprised me was that Victor was ready to start working on my hair AT MY APPOINTMENT TIME. I have never had a stylist be on time and that was a good start to what turned out to be a truly beautiful haircut. Victor took the time to listen to me, asked questions regarding my hair texture, how I normally wear it and what products and instruments I used in it. I explained that I wanted long layers that would add some body to my hair. About an hour later, Victor was done cutting my hair and had finished blow drying it and styling it. I couldn't stop running my fingers through my hair and looking in the mirror. My hair had bounce, the layers framed my face beautifully, and in short, I had the exact haircut that I always wanted but never received. Even my sisters, who have hated every haircut I've every gotten since I was six, were impressed by the way my hair looked. My little sis has since made an appointment with Victor and is going to get her hair cut as well. Pros: Gorgeous hair cut, very reasonable price, clean salon, Victor is fun to talk to and DELIVERS what you ask for Cons: Once word gets out about Victor, it may be more difficult for me to get an appointment with him :-( read more

I went here about a year and a half ago shortly after moving to DC because I lived in the area. I received a very nice coloring service and cut from Recep - I have blond hair and multiple people commented on how good my hair looks the days after my appointment. Most recently, Recep did my hair for my wedding and I couldn't have been happier with the result. I tried this place for the first time yesterday and had an awful experience. Although I asked for a rather simple haircut, it was a bit difficult to explain it to the stylist because he was not very fluent in English. After showing him a picture and pointing that I wanted my hair about the same length as his, he started clipping so roughly that I had to ask him to take it easy because he was pulling my hair with the clipper. When he took the scissors the situation didn't get better. He seemed to be rushing out and not paying much attention to what he was doing. He actually did some of the cuts while looking at the entry door instead of looking at my hair. As he went on cutting I told him that it was short enough but he insisted and left it way shorter than I had requested. I left the placed not too convinced with the result, but when I got home and looked at it carefully I realized that it was worse than expected. Result: I got a hideous irregular haircut with la stretch of shorter hair in the middle of my skull where you can actually see the scalp for 35 bucks. Doesn't look like a good deal to me. read more
