We had my child's birthday party here. The kids loved the play area! My first big complaint is the cleanliness. The floors were gross in the party room and I included a picture of one of the chairs. This was it at the start of our party. There weren't trash cans in the party room, which was frustrating. We spilled some water and when I used a paper towel to clean it up it was brown. The whole place needs a deep clean! Also, the party time is short. One hour is not enough time. If they need to clean the party rooms before the next party they should allow the kids to go back and play for another 30 min to make it a 2 hour party. This place has potential! read more

Props to this place mainly for existing. There aren't any gymnastics gyms near us, and this has opened up a new world to my daughter that she loves. Inspired by Simone Biles and the 2024 Olympics, my kid has jumped in (cartwheeled in?) with both feet. Straight up, the lobby and bathroom areas need to be cleaner and I'll stand by that. But the rest of it is pretty nice overall. The teacher seems great and has control of the group. The times I've watched my semi-trepidacious daughter here, I've noticed they move at a pace that doesn't allow for a lot of fear which is important. They sort of just get after it and settle in from there, always a good approach. I can't say we'll go here for a long time based on the distance, but we may because my daughter loves it and we're continuing with it despite the distance for us to travel each week. read more

We attended Open Play for ages 3-13 with my three- and seven-year-old kids. Fun for kids, nerve-wracking for their parents. They do not allow parents on the gym floor but only have 2 staff (they said there was a third but I never saw them) supervising a massive area which includes advanced gymnastics equipment. Their website says there is plenty of supervision for Open Play / Parent's Night Out; I fail to see how 50+ pre-teens to 2 adults qualifies as adequate. Meanwhile, their "parent corral" balcony does not provide line of sight to much of the premises, including kids being able to wander out of the gym area. About a dozen parents, myself included, chose to ignore their no-parent policy in favor of keeping our kids safe and supervised. This resulted in me having two arguments with two different staff members; they eventually capitulated and allowed parents on the gym floor "for this time only" since we had already paid, the kids were excited, and they did not want to refund me. We will not go back now that we know how inadequate their staffing actually is alongside a nonsensical no-parent policy. read more

Awful service. Employees in multiple circumstances will tell you there's open play and the next day when you arrive they say they don't. This has happened MULTIPLE times over the past years of the staff not communicating to each other their hours for play. This ultimately leads to the staff telling the customers times that are free for open play (when they actually aren't). I have left that building numerous times being frustrated with the staff and how they display the wrong information. read more

Brought my 6 and 4 year old to open play to get our energy out in and escape the heat. I am so upset we haven't been here before! $10 per kids for 90 minutes is one of the most affordable activities in Johnson county and it's right in our backyard. All of the kids were playing so well together, and the two young women working were so hands on and involved with every child. We will absolutely be back. It was such a blast! read more

We've been coming to Emerald City for a few years now. My kids have taken part in their rock climbing and gymnastics classes. We've always been very pleased with their classes and staff. The beginner classes are laid back and the kids have a blast. Would definitely recommend if you are looking to try out a new sport! Our favorite part of Emerald City is their open play times. Even if you don't attend classes at the gym you can come to open play times. They are usually on the weekends and on "no school" days. Open play is for kids ages 4-12, but they offer a toddler and parent version during the week as well. It's about $12 per kid to play for 2 hours, but it's worth it. The kids have full use of the gym's climbing and play structures. There's a zip line, foam pit, rope swing, slides, trampolines, etc. The kids aren't allowed on the gymnastics equipment or the rock climbing wall, but there is enough stuff to keep them busy otherwise. Parents are not allowed on the floor during open play, but they have bleachers to sit on that overlook the gym floor. Staff members are on the floor supervising the kids. The photos speak for themselves. I took these on January 16th, 2022. I used to bring my daughter here 4 years ago and the bathrooms have looked the same. This is the only open place I can take my daughter that doesn't have a waitlist. Absolutely disgraceful. The owner must of died and nobody has been keeping up with it. There is no way you can own a place and not know the sanitary conditions of your facility. The men's is identical, my husband used it the same day. If you're restrooms look like this, you are cutting corners EVERYWHERE. What a joke. These are our children that have to use these filthy restrooms, it's unbelievable. My daughter has been attending a preschool gymnastics class at Emerald City for approximately one year now. She LOVES her "coaches" - one has been the same since we began, but the sidekick has switched a couple of times. Each of them has brought something different to the gig - sometimes energy, sometimes enthusiasm, sometimes a personal background in gymnastics, but all of them have been great with the kids, and definitely appear to foster a fun environment. The facility is very large, and there are a lot of areas or stations with different equipment to focus on different aspects of gymnastics. And even then, the gymnastics piece is only half the story - the other half of the facility is an indoor football (the soccer kind) area where leagues play. The gymnastics side has everything I've ever seen or heard of from my years of watching miniature Olympians every four years: rings, vaults, uneven bars, trampolines, balance beams, and rope climbs, with loads of pads and cushions spread all over for safety. There's even a couple large play structures for the little ones, and a rock-climbing wall along the entire backside of the gymnastics half of the gym. Being that this is, essentially, an enormous barn where dozens of tiny athletes come to play and sweat, the climate can get a bit dank and smelly some weeks, but those are few and far between, as they tend to ventilate it pretty well. Overall, a great place to enroll your kids in a gymnastics program, or even host an event such as a birthday party! read more

We love coming here to burn off energy. The staff is always kind and helpful when I call or talk with them in person. We are so thankful to find a place that properly follows the governors guidelines when it comes to respecting medical exemptions for mask wearing. Had my 9 year olds birthday party here. He and several of his friends had been put in time out at the part for 5 minutes for "breaking their rules". Rules aren't posted anywhere. We suggested the the front desk that the overabundance of time-outs was excessive and got a lot of attitude back about how they give 3 warnings before any time outs are issued. The sheer number of time outs issued to our group - even to the rule followers in the crew suggest to me that their employees did not follow the 3 warning policy. I'll stop short of saying the timeouts ruined obsessive rule follower's birthday, but he was very upset they put him in time out. Will not come here again. Exceptionally poor service. read more

I brought my daughter and her 12 year old friends here to open gym. After paying, they were informed they were not allowed to tumble. It is a gym. This is not written anywhere or mentioned when they take your money. Now I have to pay to take them somewhere else where they can actually tumble. This is very disappointing. I am very glad I found out before we scheduled a party here! Update - I talked to a staff member who had no answer and told me to I had to leave the floor when my daughter wanted me to watch her. PARENTS BE WARNED: Maybe not all instructors are this bad, but DO WATCH the class as this may be going unnoticed as parents cannot see the entire gym from the viewing area. I'm guessing most parents sit on their phones and don't watch closely. (Which I normally do too!). I enrolled my five-year-old in the 4-5's class. I am extremely disappointed in the professionalism of the teachers. Her regular teacher is a high school age instructor, which is fine. She often has meets on Saturdays (during my daughter's class). The substitute teacher asked my daughter's class, "what do you guys want to do today"? I'm sorry, but I think this is completely ridiculous. This is a group of five-year-olds. As a parent paying them to teach, they should at least give them some options, not just asking them what they want to do! After the class we did talk to the substitute asking where the structure was - her response was "I'm just a sub". After that things got a little better. Until last week... At her last class, her regular instructor laid down while the children were climbing up the rock climbing wall. She was in a place that she could not even see or react quickly if the children needed her. One of the children called out asking for help. She did go over and help the child. But after enrolling in 2 months, I am removing my daughter. The wall is not extremely dangerous, but I would estimate about 15 ft. tall with padding at the bottom. Regardless, this does not excuse the instructors lack of instruction/attention. I cannot imagine if a child had fallen and landed on their neck. read more

Great place to be a part of. I am most familiar with the rock wall in the back. It is a very well run wall, with a great staff. Their pricing is cheaper than most other rock gyms I have been to (if not the cheapest). Plus they offer discount nights. The hours are limited for climbing, but that does make it easier to meet other climbers. Wednesday night is the most social night if you are looking to meet fellow climbers and many people go out for a drink after climbing on Wednesday. The main down side is the lack of lead climbing and the limited wall space (they have maybe 15-20 ropes?). But the staff is good about getting new routes set and they will have small comps from time to time that usually result in a completely new set of routes being thrown up. All in all a great local gym. The main part of the gym is dedicated to gymnastics, and if all the trophies on the wall are any indication they are quite good. They also have a great play area called bump city that is tons of fun for kids (heck I think most adults would even like to run around and jump in the foam pit). read more

We have not been to Emerald City in probably 8 years so thought we would try it out with our toddler for Parent Tot Open Gym. We went over Spring Break so it was full but never felt that way. When we checked in and paid everyone was friendly and fast. Onward to taking our shoes off and placing them in one of many cubbies then off to play. On this particular day actual gymnast were practicing but it was sort of a bonus for the toddler, they weren't using anything from open gym and she liked watching them. There is so much to do no matter skill level or interest. They have a few rope swings throughout including one over a foam pit, mazes, slides (that are extremely fast), hula hoops, trampolines, a rock wall, a net wall and more. We had no problem killing an hour here. And at $6 per kid I felt like we got out money's worth. There was only one worker on the floor but with so many parents I didn't feel that more were needed. We are excited to come back for summer camp. read more

I'm not sure what it is about open gyms not being staffed but we won't be coming back. There is ONE staff member on the floor and one at the desk. No one to supervise. I asked several times to go on the floor to watch my son and was told only birthday party parents can be on the floor. It would be different if you could actually see every part of the gym floor but you can. The tramps are blocked and it one of the more dangerous spots... with no supervision. So as I'm sitting in the bleachers, I watched two girls collide and one starts bleeding. No one moved a muscle. I went down to help as she couldn't find her mom. The lady at the front desk helped her but didn't seem concerned. And the girl got blood smeared on the counter and I have yet to see it wiped down. You can tell a lot about the sanitary standards of a facility when the bathrooms aren't kept up on. read more

This review is only for the parent-supervised toddler open gym time. Emerald City Gymnastics has massive play structures for little children. It's a huge space and offers many, many activities to occupy your child's interest. It is well worth attending at least once; I'd be surprised if you didn't add it to your list of favorites. A MAJOR drawback is that the open gym time is limited to one hour, twice a week. It's not enough time to wear my kid out, and he ends up throwing a decent tantrum because he hasn't had enough time to check the whole place out thoroughly by the end of the hour. I was recently at a birthday party for 5 year olds. The place was packed. The ages were 3-12. Parents are not allowed on the floor (instead, there is an observation balcony) and there appeared to be 2 high school kids down there for this huge place. They just stood there the entire time and didn't help the flow at all. A couple of the parents had to go down to move the lines through for the rope swing and the zip line. It was really pretty scary watching large 12-year old boys playing along side the smaller kids. I thought it was very dangerous and unsupervised for younger children. Other moms were commenting as well. It was very hectic and there were times I couldn't even locate my kids. I think it's a really neat place, but it needs to be better managed during busy party days or only for older kids. read more

I will echo other reviewers in saying this place is pretty horrible. Zero guidance, zero rules posted, there were two teenagers on the floor with at least 45 kids. We saw one child leave with half his face covered in blood (heads bleed, but yikes!). The party rooms are tiny and not ventilated so once we packed everyone in the room was miserably stifling. The foam pit with a rope swing is terrifying with children swinging out and dropping almost onto other kids. Trampolines are unsupervised and the rule is one child per trampoline however this isn't enforced by the two 14 year olds staffing the floor. I mentioned each time I heard them say "the rule is.." that they should post the rules! A woman who appeared to be a manager directed kids to stop Climbing a ladder and jumping over one another into the foam pit, I made eye contact and said "post the rules and staff the floor" and she looked away as if she hadn't heard me. We will not return and I encourage anyone debating on this site to look elsewhere. From my vantage point it's not worth the risk. read more

We have been going to open gym - parent/tot time for about 2 years now. It is my kiddos favorite place to go. They have a great time. It is Mon-Friday during September - May and only Tuesday & Friday June-August since they offer summer camp. We also recently signed up for a class. Coach Steve is great with the kids! So far so good! My only wish is that parents would listen to the rules of parent/tot time and help their children follow them :) I have only had one not so good experience which is why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. My son had a birthday party on Friday the 25th of Jan 2019. When I first arrived I went up the the front desk and told them I was there for my sons party. I was told "your party is downstairs, the 1st room to the right." I didn't know what to expect so I just went to the room and waited. Nobody came to my room to let me know what was going on so I went back to the entry and I waited for all the kids to get there. When all the kids showed up I had them get their bracelets at the front desk. When they were done I had them go back to the room to see what we needed to do next..after several minutes and the kids getting impatient I went back to the front desk area to be told that my party needed to go over to the entry of the play area and that they needed to hear the rules. Everything was just very unorganized. Like they didn't have enough staff to make sure things ran smoother. I paid a lot of money and they never showed me where my room was, where the kids should be and what they needed to be doing. I had to keep asking and bothering the people up at the front desk. I also paid extra to get juice pouches with my birthday party package and what do you know I never got them. So I ended up spending more money for pop out of the vending machine for all the kids (which was overpriced and did not work - so some kids did not get drinks). When I told the staff that the machine did not work they told me that there was nothing that they could do! That's not the worst part. The very next day we all came down with a horrible stomach bug. Everyone who came to the party got sick. Fever, throwing up, you can't get out of bed, with aching and the chills. So that tells me that this place is VERY unsanitary. Gross! I will not be going back to this place ever again! When we were leaving, there was a group of people whop paid to stay the night there. It scares me to think what happened to all those poor people and what they had to endure afterwards! YIKES! read more

I've only been to Emerald City to climb the rock wall in the back, and it was a lot of fun! I'd had belay experience before so they didn't make me go through the whole class to belay, which was nice. If you haven't been before though, the staff is good at teaching how to belay and climb. The atmosphere is relaxed and everyone has a good time! There are regulars who go most days of the week it seems like. You can rent gear or bring your own, and if you need someone to belay you everyone is really friendly! There have been a couple times when it was too crowded and I left because there just wasn't enough space to get good climbing in. That's the only downside, really, is that it could be bigger! But, the main part of the gym is the gymnastics, so there are trampolines and big old squishy mats everywhere too. The kids always look like they are having a blast! If you want an affordable climbing place and want to meet fellow climbers, this is a good place to try out. It's great too because it's right by Oak Park Mall, so that is easily accessible for most people (IBEX is a much farther drive for me!) read more

We try and get over there whenever we have time because it is such a fun place that offers so many different great play options for kids including trampolines, slides, balance beams, kids' rock wall, zip line, rope swing, and the list goes on.
