I had no idea what improv is when i took this class but now I'm hooked for life. Keith is amazing he kept his cool and kept encouraging me when i knew i was totally embarrassing myself in the first class, he even sent me an email the next day assuring me that i was exactly where i needed to be and that it will get easier (such a great instructor) And it did get easier and i was doing a lot better week after week now i have better clarity and less self-judgement saying whatever comes to mind and comfortable with making mistakes. Keith is not only a master of his craft, but an excellent teacher as well. Not all talented people are able to translate their genius in a way others can absorb but Keith does so in a way that is fun, informative and encourages you to let go and be fully present. My intent for joining level 1 was really to get into the habit of dropping the mental rehearsals. Just finished Improv Level 1 which ended with a grad night performance. 2 days later and I'm still buzzing with excitement and pride. Our group, Shoelaces & Tequila, full of newbies, with no prior improve experience, turned it out! Thanks to Keith's style, he gave us the freedom to help make ourselves comfortable with the stage first and foremost. He let us do our thing, no matter how dumb or lame-'just get out there'. I think that took a huge load of pressure off so we could just have fun with it, instead of focused on rules and methods. As we began to get more comfortable with each other and the stage, more attention to detail of our scenes, characters and method crept in. At that point, we were ready to accept them and get to the next level. Keith was gentle in his approach and very easy going which made this whole experience a lot easier to adjust to. One of the reasons I took the class was to help with my self confidence and Keith created a non threatening environment to help ease some of the anxiety that many new improv students face. If anyone is on the fence about doing improv, get off it now and jump in! It is well worth every penny and minute. You also get to meet new people and make new friends! It's kinda of like being a kid again and having playtime crossed with mind challenging puzzles. Improv forces you out of your comfort zone and its a blast! I've taken Keith's level one class twice already and just signed up for a third time. I'm not looking to become a professional comedian or anything, I've just found that taking the class and exercising my "improv brain" helps me both in my work (as a writer) and in my personal life. One thing I really like about this class (that might not be as true elsewhere in LA) is that the students tend to come from all walks of life-- for the most part they're not "in the industry" and I feel like this helps nurture a really supportive and uncompetitive vibe. Signing up for Keith's level 1 class might've been the best decision I've ever made. I came into the first class completely terrified at the idea of doing improv, but by the time it ended I immediately couldn't wait to come back the next week. Keith is such an encouraging, informative and HILARIOUS teacher and it was really a joy to be able to learn from him and spend three hours cracking up with my fellow classmates week after week. When I signed up for Keith's Level One class, the idea of being vulnerable in front of total strangers was, to say the least, daunting. I'm not necessarily aspiring to do this professionally, but I wanted the chance to learn how to think on my feet, work through my social anxiety, and feel comfortable being myself in any setting. Thankfully I came to the perfect place for that!!!! Keith provided such a safe environment for all of us that by the time each three-hour session was over, I felt inspired and creative and like I had really LEARNED something. I saw marked improvement in my own skills and that of my fellow students; not to mention our chemistry on stage, how attuned we became to each other, and how noticeably that affected our performance for the better. This was not a "showbiz" group; these were real people with the same fears and reservations as anyone else, so the atmosphere was always understanding, supportive, honest, and encouraging. It was exciting to discover how funny and talented each of us really were, and I thank Keith wholeheartedly for that. I had so much fun over the course of these eight weeks that it was pretty sad when it was over. My friends were jealous when I told them about it. I can't recommend it highly enough! I really wanted to try improv for a while. I'm an actor and it's been a fear of mine to branch out of the world of scripts and being told what to do. THIS HAS BEEN THE SINGLE GREATEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE! At first I was thinking I would take these classes because of superficial reasons, but it became so much more than that. After taking level 1 classes with Shaun, I got back in touch with lost parts of myself that I had forgotten. He inspired me to trust in my creativity and imagination again. Trusting in ME was something I didn't know how to do, and he gave me the safe space to do so. I will be forever grateful. These skills not only translated into my acting, but in regular things like HAVING CONVERSATIONS with people. I had become pretty shy over the last few years, but now I feel like I can step forward confidently in a way I could only PRETEND before. Classes here are SO supportive, and I made a ton of friends from both my level one with Shaun and my level 2 with Keith. People in this school are so passionate and patient and kind. I've heard from my actor friends that at some of the more "well-known" improv schools you are getting teachers that are just teaching improv as a side job and you can feel it in the way they are impatient. I want to write this particularly for those new to improv, or considering taking a class for the first time. In the words of NIKE: JUST DO IT. Last night was the grand finale of our Level One improv class with Keith and I can honestly say his 8 week course was WORTH EVERY DIME. I'll admit, prior to signing up, I had reservations about driving to Hollywood for the class (ie. dealing with evening traffic coming from Santa Monica). But after reading the Yelp reviews from his former students I decided to bite the bullet and join. I AM SOOOO GLAD THAT I DID! In fact, my seemingly "stressful" commute there actually became a JOY knowing I was en route to a PLAY DATE with new friends in a creative, safe & FUN environment. Keith's teaching style is PERFECT. He's relaxed yet completely on point. He's disarming and challenging at the same time. He creates an encouraging environment where it's safe to just be YOU and trust the process. AND IT WORKS. His teaching felt very linear in the sense that each week builds upon the former, and the way he explains things just makes sense. He's a very thoughtful, professional guy and I would recommend anyone (especially inexperienced improvers) take his class. BTW - My classmates consisted of a special ed teacher, an entrepreneur, a student, a waitress, a social worker, a psychologist and a nurse. So ANYONE can take this class! I took Improv Level 1 based on the yelp reviews and I am so grateful for them because I wouldn't have signed up. Whether you are an actor (like me lol) or someone who is craving to do something different, this is the place to be. I can only speak as an actor, but I loved that the group I was in was so diverse which added so much color to each scene. Keith taught improv in such a different way, it was almost felt natural. It's been a couple weeks since I finished the class and I am excited for the next level. Honestly, I've done improv for a few years at some other schools, but this was the first place I've been to where all the teachers really care and aren't just there for a paycheck. Everyone in my class came got really good pretty quickly, and it's thanks to the program the teachers are doing here. No dragging it out making you wait for the next class; in just a couple of weeks things start clicking and we're up doing scenes and having fun.
