I came here to watch my friend perform in a play, and I was surprised by the very intimate setting. It only has two rows from the stage, so I was able to clearly see every actor close up. Fun experience! One hour parking is limited in the plaza, but there are enough spaces that you should try first. Plenty of street parking too. Theater is located on the second floor. read more

Impro Theatre presented Tennessee Williams Unscripted at the beautiful Dynasty Typewriter theatre on Monday. All I can say is, Tennessee Williams would be UPSET that he hadn't written this amazing play! Pathos and bathos and drinking and smoking and sex and coming of age... created as we watched, with wild audience suggestions as prompts. (A boar's head heirloom, really??!). I was in the audience this past weekend for "Shakespeare Unscripted" and what these folks do is nothing short of incredible. A two-act Shakespearean play completely improvised! It was funny, yes, but even more impressive, it was a complete, complex, heartfelt story of interesting characters you might find in one of Shakespeare's comedies!! Magical the way these actors brought the story together. They perform in various theatres across LA so do yourself the favor of checking on their schedule and give yourself a night out to remember. I took classes there a couple years ago, so if you are interested in learning tricks of the trade, I recommend their classes as well! read more

I'm a long-time fan of Impro Theatre -- it's my #1 choice for live entertainment in LA and they never disappoint. I was in the audience of Impro's recent performance of Shakespeare UnScripted, and as usual, was impressed by the actors' ability to perfectly capture the manners, speech, movement, plot twists, and style of Shakespeare's world. In every Impro Theatre production -- whether inspired by Shakespeare, Austen, Westerns, Film Noir, Sondheim, you name it -- the actors' mental and physical dexterity is astounding and the laugh-out-loud plot elements keep on coming. In this show, every cast member found an opportunity to exercise their enormous talent and comedic skill in tour-de-force solo moments -- a rhyming sonnet on the sexiness of baked goods, lavish drawn-out death scenes, a conversation among 3 characters played by the same actor, etc. Great value for my ticket purchase. THE best long for narrative improv is Los Angeles, and among the very best in the world. Even if you're wary of improv, having seen some that didn't work, this improv will astound you with it's hilarious storytelling. Some of the shows you see here are so good you'd swear they're scripted, but they not. Some are even better than a lot of scripted plays you've seen. The cast is chock full of stellar professionals who deliver jam packed and fun filled plays... Not games but actual theatrical plays. Tickets are a bargain at $15, there's not a bad seat in the intimate house. Parking is easy next door in the bank parking lot, and restaurants abound nearby. Like many others here, I started as a fan of their shows and became a student. I cannot say enough good things about Impro Theatre. Their shows are always so well acted. In fact, I took my parents to see Twilight Zone Unscripted, and my mom said she enjoyed it more than most scripted plays she'd ever seen. I take improv at quite a few schools, and while they all have their benefits, Impro offers something truly unique. The teachers are fantastic, and I have learned so much...but beyond all of that, there is truly a sense of community. People support each other, and I have made a lot of new friends in the six months I have been studying there. I am proud to be a part of this community. Full. Length. Plays. Improvised. Wow. I actually had to see it to believe it. This isn't like anything else I've ever seen in Los Angeles. Yes, it can be funny. But when has an improvisor at UCB or the former IOwest made you want to cry (in a good way)? Wow. And when they perform genres like STAR TREK, it's not a gimmick or even ironic for the sake of a cheap laugh. Here they improvise full length plays in various styles of literature, plays, films and even computer games. The first performance I ever saw was in the style of Jane Austen, and it literally took my breath away. It's hard to believe that it's all made up on the spot! I've started taking classes at Impro. Who knew the main company members whom I have admired for many years teach adults their secrets! All of their teachers are master improvisors and know what they are doing. They've been improvising for decades and their experience and ability is hard to find elsewhere. The community of artists and fellow students are incredibly supportive. Jane Austen Unscripted was our first, but certainly not last, taste of the Impro Theatre. This is not like going to see that dude you know from your acting class do some improvised scenes in the basement of a church. These guys are CRAZY AMAZING! They're professionals. I have been a fan of this company since first seeing Jane Austen Unscripted about eight years ago. The classes are taught by the Main Company members I have enjoyed seeing in the past eight years in Shakespeare Unscripted, Sondheim Unscripted, Chekhov Unscripted, Play Unscripted, and Twilight Zone Unscripted. Full length, narrative plays improvised completely in the style of the genre or author - it is homage, satire, and exceptionally connected ensemble storytelling. There are always moments of tremendous joy and comedy, and sometimes - unexpected moments of heart, humanity, and pathos. I think these are some of the best improvisers AND actors around. I've passed this place countless times, due to working nearby for the last 5yrs, and barely gave it a second thought because it's tiny and in a small little shopping center. But damn are they good! I watched the long-form Tennessee Williams improv the last two Saturdays and am hoping to make it next Saturday, as well. It was that good. And for a free show of that quality not to have a line out the door an hour before is just criminal. Frankly, it's better than UCB and not nearly as hard to get a seat. Go! I took a Foundation 1 class here last summer with Lorne Greene. It was cool. It was a very, very, very small class (3 + teacher) but we had fun and learned while playing improv games. It is $300 for 8 weeks. Which if you think about it, comes out to $150 a month for 4 classes. Totally affordable. I believe they also have a saturday kids class that Lorne teaches on Saturdays. read more

The main company at Impro is one of the best improv ensembles on the planet! They are steadfast in their pursuit of creating stunning narratives in a seemingly endless list of genres. Their school is also excellent and they attract passionate and serious students. Their approach of training the improviser as playwright is as demanding as it is rewarding. They also employ some interesting theatrical approaches such as Viewpoints and the Circles of Presence which seems to be novel for an improv school. Great community as well! read more

I usually only use yelp to look at reviews and not write reviews but Impro Theatre was SO good, I'm making an exception. I really didn't know what to expect when I decided to watch Jane Austen Unscripted at the Carrie Hamilton which is part of the Pasadena Playhouse. All I can say now though is that I have been blown away. These actors were some of the finest I have seen. They were so talented and it was clear that they had done extensive research about Austen's style of writing. They were so natural I would forget that they were improvising. They made an entire play out of an audience member's suggestion (lace trim). I had so much fun. They were hilarious. There wasn't a person in the theatre who wasn't laughing and completely captivated by the actors. They really reminded me how there are so many amazing actors out there. I definitely plan on seeing them again and I highly encourage others to see them if they get the chance. They were great! Wonderful actors and a wonderful concept. When I discovered Impro Theatre, I felt as if I had discovered hidden treasure in Los Angeles. I attended their Jane Austen Unscripted show last year and my jaw dropped at their talent and wit. I immediately signed up for their Foundation 1 class and have never looked back. I was lucky enough to have Jo McGinley as my first teacher--an incredibly warm, supportive person to have as I began my journey. I'm currently taking a class with Tracy Burns and love her fun, animated teaching style. What I love about Impro Theatre is that they welcome both non-actors and actors alike with open arms and leave no room for overblown egos in the classroom. I had only taken a couple of acting classes prior to taking classes at Impro Theatre, but I felt like I was treated as an equal along with the more seasoned actors in the classroom. It's a safe place where you feel that you can be yourself and grow as an actor. I only wish more theatre companies were like this one, but that's what makes them unique. I've been involved with Impro Theatre on and off for decades. Their strength, in my view, are the play forms they perform, which I have yet to see any other group pull of successfully. They also host a very nurturing and positive group of performers and teachers.
