When I think of the Strip District I think of restaurants and grocery shopping. I guess it only makes sense that there would be at least one store dedicated to helping us shoppers prep our shopping once we get our things back home. The impression I had from my first visit here is that if you're looking for something kitchen-related, there's a good chance that it's available at this store. In The Kitchen sells quite the assortment of cookware, bakeware, cutlery, and gadgets. Plus you can find some kitchen essentials such as seasonings, pasta sauce, and salsa. When I was here I purchased an assortment of items for my friends, as there was something here for all of them. I have to admit that despite being surrounded by high-quality cooking utensils and whatnot, my favorite purchase was a dinosaur-shaped ice tray. Come on - that's just too fun! While I'm not in the Strip very often, I can definitely see myself shopping here again when I do make the trek back to the area. I've shopped here for 10 years. 3 weeks ago I bought a Viking fry pan. The other night I noticed flaking of the finish on edge of the pan. It was near the handle. On the box it says the edges have a stainless steel finish over an aluminum core. What was flaking off was bright shiny stainless steel looking, and underneath it a duller metal. I have not used this pan much. It is a spare pan. It's been in the dishwasher maybe 5 times. The manager said it was "normal" wear and tear. In 3 weeks? The manager said it is probably due to the pan rubbing against other pans. So I pointed out that she agreed it was flaking? She said no. We looked at a fry pan on the shelf of the store and it also had that defect on the edge. She would still not take the pan I bought back, exchange it, or give me store credit. She would only give me 10% on another pan. I'm surprised at how bad customer service here is. And I seriously do not recommend Viking fry pans. I've bought stainless steel cookware for decades. This is the first time I've experienced this. read more

I've been coming here for years now and have always had my cooking needs met. When I come here, I'm usually on a mission for something specific. The staff has always been extremely helpful if I need help finding things. Toward the front of the store, they always have cute displays set up with decorative plate sets, cup sets, kitchen towels, etc. Each year around Christmas they put a tree up with cute kitchen and cooking-related ornaments, and they'd make a thoughtful gift for anyone with a chef in the family! Recently I got a set of fall-themed sprinkles that were so perfect and cute for all the baking I've been doing (goodbye, beach body season), and it's nice to know that I can rely on this store for all my baking needs. I got blue sprinkles here for my baby shower cookies, purple sanding sugar for my friend's birthday cookies, and I'm looking forward to seeing what fun wintery baking decorations they have. Its a very convenient location; you can do some shopping in the Strip and then pick up some knives, baking materials, ovens, coffee grinders, and other cookware items. This place has a great variety of products for the size. It's not huge, but the items they sell are high quality. They have some of the best knives that you can buy in the Pittsburgh area. Keep an eye out for the knife display they have. You'll see Zwilling, Wusthof (rated and recognized as one of the best knives, if not the best, for chefs), among others. They also offer knife sharpening services. If you are a serious chef, this is essential to ensure your knives last for a while and you can make the most out of your products. The staff is also quite helpful and will ensure you find the best product for your needs. It's clean and well organized. Price-wise, it is fair. You can probably find cheaper ordering from the manufacturer directly or searching online, but it's one of the cheaper kitchen speciality stores in the area. My wife and I can't seem to walk past a kitchen specialty store without walking in...and buying something...but for the most part, they're all pretty similar. They'll carry everything you could imagine, from low-end products to high-end items, and you'll always walk out with something you didn't plan on buying in the first place. The only thing that I feel really sets most places apart is their staff. Are they knowledgeable? Are they nice? Are they helpful? Are they obnoxious and pushy salespeople? Having been in countless specialty stores, I can honestly say that In The Kitchen is one of the best places to shop. Maybe it's the fact that they're locally owned and operated, but their staff has always been very helpful and incredibly nice. Plus, since they changed the layout of the registers, the store is a lot more open and easier to navigate. If you haven't been in for a while, you'll notice the difference immediately! Overall, I think the independently-owned nature of In The Kitchen is what really makes it unique. I went to get my knives sharpened and my knives were returned to me more dull than before I brought them in. This has created a very dangerous situation where I have slipped and almost cut myself because the blade will not slice through food items. The price is good and they are very fast but do not take your knives here if you want quality. I feel as though this was a waste of money and now I have to take them somewhere else to be sharpened and hope that my expensive knives have not sustained irreparable damage. read more

Yes, yes, I even looked at the label and realized it wasn't even made in PA but in IN. I still bought it as I'm addicted to popcorn. What really caught my attention was a table laden with Pittsburgh specific items such as dinnerware, kitchen towels, coffee mugs, and wine glasses. Wow. It pains me to write this update. I've been a (good!) customer of In the Kitchen since it was located in Wexford. I've spent plenty of bucks on stuff I needed (and really didn't actually NEED) for me. I've spent plenty of money on gifts for friends and for shower gifts. Since the store has been in the Strip District I've trudged happily over to spend lunches browsing and buying the aisles and frequently accompanied by friends who spent their own bucks there. And then. I bought a Living Social Deal. On yet another lunch hour spent in the store, I selected a knife and went to check out with my LS certificate. The clerk looked at the knife and the deal and told me it wasn't good on knives. Hmmm. I looked - again - at the certificate. Nope, no mention of not being good on knives. "Oh. Well, it's not good on sale items." Another perusal of the certificate. Hmmm...no mention of not being good on sale items. The clerk then said she'd need to get the owner. The owner came out - the formerly charming, lovely individual I'd chatted up many times over the years discussing quality, technique, suggested brands. Quite a different demeanor this time, unfortunately. She said they couldn't honor the deal on a sale item because it cut into their profit. Really? I understand wanting to stay in the black. But the deal is the deal....you can't write your own rules after the fact. I took my Living Social deal, left the knife behind and promptly called Living Social when I got back to the office. They were not pleased. In the Kitchen violated the terms of usage. My purchase price of the deal was refunded and In the Kitchen lost a previously loyal customer. A side note: ironically, I'm the Duchess of In the Kitchen....anyone who'd like that "title" can have it! read more

They have a giant selection of kitchen tools and appliances...i spend about two hours looking at kitchen supplies... it feels like a commercial kitchen supply stores.... Their staff really knows and understands the merchandise. They can help you find exactly what will solve your present need. Because of their assistance I bought the best garlic press in the world. It is so easy to clean and can press multiple cloves at once. I suggest going here for your wedding registry or especially for gift giving seasons. I have visited this store at least eight times since I moved to Pittsburgh over two years ago and have always enjoyed shopping here. They often have more unique kitchen items that I would have trouble finding elsewhere. In particular, they have a great selection of beautiful cutting boards and Ateco icing tips (vs. Wilton being widely available at Michael's and Jo-Ann's). If you have trouble finding a particular item, I highly suggest giving them a call to see if they have it. We've also been here on a summer Saturday when they had a lot of local PA vendors selling kitchen items throughout the store. It was a great way of learning about local vendors! read more

In the Kitchen is a pretty great resource for all types of cooks--serious, hobbyist, or dabbler. They strike a nice balance between fancypants and practical, and stock everything from canning supplies to tortilla presses to pasta makers to fancy knives to KitchenAid mixers. This like many other stores in the Pittsburgh strip district have realized there are a lot of dumb tourists that stop in this area hoping to catch some authentic pittsburgh food and stuff, who they promptly rip off like a three card molly dealer in the northside. For the last time I stopped in their store today just thinking I might find a rib rack for baking and they had one I liked so I purchased it for $19.99 + tax . On the way home I stopped in a local north hills department store to get a pair of shorts and walked by the kitchenware department when to my surprise the same rack I had purchased at In The Kitchen, with the same brand name and upc popped right out at me and it was $10.99 + tax. This wasn't even a sale price at the department store who's prices are not low. I feel like I'll need a hand on my wallet when I walk by In the Kitchen the next time but I'll never go in again. read more
