Please be careful. I was strolling down the road when I stopped to look out the front of the store. Out of no where, the assumed shop owner runs up to me and starts yelling the prices of everything. I felt very overwhelmed and concerned for my safety. His passion for his Indian clothing store was blinded by ignorance and assumptions. He repetitively screeched, "100% silk", and would slam the tags in my face. His credibility for high quality Indian clothes was dismissed as he yelled about the prices of every single item in the store - which he decides the prices for. The clothes are low quality and massively overpriced. I would recommend going elsewhere to look for genuine Indian items where you will not be ripped off or tormented by the shop owner. read more

I highly recommend India Art & Craft. I called the day before I went to the store to verify that they would be open on a Saturday. I was assured that they are open on Saturdays. Next, I explained my dilemma. I needed a long "woodland formal" for a wedding in upper New York. I am older and a strapless or thin-strapped long gown is not appropriate for me. I was also seeking something with three-quarter or long sleeves in a pure fabric. For example, silk or cotton. The next day when I arrived at the store I was warmly greeted by the owner. He had selected six gowns that matched my requirements. I tried on the gowns and selected a light yellow gown with a full underskirt and thin turquoise shawl. It is very festive and meets all my requirements. My husband was concerned about the cool evenings. Therefore, we also purchased a cashmere shawl that coordinates with the wedding outfit. I have sent photos to the bride's mother to determine if I am "on track". She believes I am on target and believes my outfit from India Art & Craft is perfect. Where does one go for a gypsy costume last minute in DC? Why, an Indian clothing store of course! I was trying to find a skirt with the noise making coins on it to go over a long peasant skirt I had. Plus, I've always wanted one of those skirts, but I could never find one that I liked. Luckily, I found this place on yelp and have to give it major props. The shopkeeper is super attentive (annoyingly so, actually), but he may be willing to barter, and threw in a bangle for good measure (as well as 2 business cards to distribute). The clothes are a little pricey (Full price was $39 for a belly dancing skirt?) But they have good sales and deals (Pashminas were 4 for the price of 3, belly dancing skirts were $19 that day). The clothing is all beautiful, and there's a huge selection of colors. Skirts, dresses, scarves everywhere...right next to Chipotle! I may not need to shop here very often because I don't need this kind of clothing(so pretty though!), but it definitely made my weekend. I got TONS of compliments on the skirt at all 3 Halloween parties I went to, and I did end up buying two instead of one - that man can bargain. The skirt itself is of much higher quality than I've seen elsewhere(more rows of coins, better design for easier tying), and held up through Halloween and All Saints Day. read more

I am going back next week when they get those tiered skirts in stock that are so popular in Takoma Park and Greenbelt. Today the owner helped me choose incense, and he gave me so much information. The pushy sales guys here make me feel like I'm transported back to India--which means we get the fun of haggling. I love how all I have to do is ask for the price of one skirt and the guy will start pulling ALL the skirts off the racks. Apparently, everything in the store is "authentic and one of a kind." Once you show that you know your stuff, he will leave you alone. For example, I was browsing through the box of bindi. The following conversation ensued... Sales guy: $7 and they're one of a kind. You won't find them anywhere else. Me: Actually, I can find them in Jackson Heights very easily. Two packs for $10. Sales guy: Where is that? Me: Queens, NY. Because there is a lack of competition, the prices are on the higher side. What a wonderful experience! My husband and I both needed clothes for a Hindu wedding. The proprietor was extremely helpful; he discussed and showed us alternatives and gave us information on the traditions. He also was very thoughtful about what would be comfortable for the ceremony and reception and basically could not have been nicer. While this shop is small and quaint, it boasts high quality products backed by excellent customer service. There are lots of indian outfits to choose from - men and women's for different sizes. I, too, pass this place daily & never think twice, but after an Open City brunch I decided a little window shopping was just what a needed. And what a treat! Everything at India Art & Craft is beautiful and, for the most part, authentically Indian. It's a small store packed with a surprisingly huge amount of stuff -- dresses, skirts, shoes, bags, wraps, beaded wall hangings, jewelry, hookah, flavored tobacco, Indian music CDs - every corner of this store is filled with something bright, colorful & interesting. When I arrived, the owner greeted me promptly & friendlily, telling me about their pashmina sale & pointing out their dressing room but otherwise leaving me to shop. I tried on a dress & when I returned from the dressing room, the place was packed! Alas, it was not my lucky day to find the sundress of my dreams at India Art & Craft, which was OK because my wallet wasn't at its best today. That said, I will be back for another try. This store has clothing in all sizes, from XS on up up 3X, in long and short varieties & every length in between, so there's something for everyone. The racks are a joy to browse -- gorgeous, luxurious Indian dresses in every color of the rainbow. Sure, I noticed a couple made my Necessary Objects by Ady Gluck-Frankel, which they sell at Sears, so that was a little off, but even those dresses fit the image, & like I said, for the most part, everything else appears to be authentically Indian - made in India. Oh, one FYI: They have a no returns policy, with only two days to exchange your merchandise. I also plan to go back to buy a hookah -- they have smaller ones for only about $45 (larger ones for as much as $145), & they sell flavored tobacco for $15 in every flavor imaginable. The smell of the incents drew us in but once you are in the clothes make you stay. Two men were in the shop father and son both were kind and customer friendly as far as answering questions and helpful with the sizes, I kid you not. I picked up two items scarf and dress. The one thing I have a difficult time with is the "one size fits all" Not true depending on the cut and material. The one gentleman I think was the father gave me a card and said I could order online and they would ship the items to you. Got my attention. Today I checked it out and was disappointed its not a website where you can actually make purchases you have to call in and give the item number and your CC# over the phone. Big no no with me giving your CC# over the phone does not permit permit safety features for your information. Shame because I was ready to buy again their skirts are beautiful. The owners should really think about investing in online shopping it would pay off especially in this day and age. Plus I don't live in DC. Thus the 4 stars no online buying. I really love this shop! Everything is so beautiful and colorful. I called ahead of time to make sure they had body henna in stock. CB answered the phone cheerfully and confirmed. When I arrived at the store, he greeted me warmly and remembered that I called. He's really the sweetest. He helped me pick out body henna cones and then gave me a complimentary bindi when I told him it was my first time visiting the store. I was in DC for a conference, and this shop happened to be close to the hotel. The owner asked how he could help us as soon as my husband and I walked into the store. We are going to a friend's wedding this summer, and we both were in search of traditional Indian attire to wear to the ceremony. He asked us questions about the couple and walked us through everything we needed for our outfits, which was really helpful as this will be our first time as guests at an Indian wedding. He was not pushy at all, and suggested accessories but said they were just ideas and of course you could also use your own jewelry/shoes to complete the ensemble. The prices were very fair, less than what I had previously found online. I was first attracted to this place after I saw the brightly colored pashminas hanging outside. I went in and the salesman (we all know him) was very helpful, but kinda in my space and pressuring me to buy. I was impressed with the prints and colors (the different shades of ROYGBIV) and the quality seemed decent. He said they were running a special. This special runs all the time. If you buy three you get a gold bangel. I would recommend going here if you are looking for a pashmina or scarf-like accessory in a specific print or solid color. There is a sheen to the fabric which makes the pashmina irredescent and they reflect light very well. I have 3 and I get compliments everytime I pair them with a coat. 20 bucks is pretty steep for a scarf that is not authenticated--pashmina is a type of cashmere wool and textiles made from it. But you will get use out of them. The store also carries some of the most beautiful clothing, but expect to pay a price, and there are interesting trinkets and collectibles. Definitely stop here to buy a gift for the person who loves South Asia culture and for the person who has everything. The price varies from item to item. read more
