The best indian place to eat in Bloomington. These guys are amazing in their food, the way they treat their customers is simply outstanding!

I've been here twice and each time it was pretty bad. First time I ordered a rice pudding that was just cooked rice sitting in a very thin milk sauce, and it had clearly come from the freezer. This time I ordered lamb biryani and garlic naan. The raita was the consistency of water and had an ice chip in it from the freezer... absolutely no flavor. The biryani was poorly seasoned and oddly wet. The naan was average. This place is way overpriced for the quality. read more

My favorite Indian restaurant in town because it does not have any glaring health code violations from the county (that I'm aware of) but most importantly the food is delicious and it has its own parking lot downtown! A rare bird, indeed. From the naan to the vegetable samosas to the vegetable malai kofta (really, give this creamy vegetable curry a try) to the chicken tikka masala, everything is delicious and the portions are sizable. I love that it's family run but the downside is when it does get very crowded and too many orders are in, the service can be quite slow. read more

Found this place on Yelp and I was not disappointed - exceeded my expectations actually! Went for dinner and got the vegetarian Tali platter (sampler). This was a terrific deal at $15- I barely ate half and left quite full. Had the option of specifying spice level which was really nice considering that other Yelpers mentioned their food wasn't spicy enough. I'm guessing they went for the lunch buffet which presumably has a fixed low spice level. I went with 4 out of 6 which was perfect for me - pretty spicy but easily balanced out by the cool yogurt sauce, a beer, and sweet rice dessert. I would like to qualify this review by saying that the food here is honestly not bad. It's not the best Indian in town (Bombay Cafe) but it's okay. My issue with them is their miserable service. I have ordered delivery from India Garden three times now and each time I have been disappointed. I keep giving them more chances, which is my mistake. My three orders have taken a collective five hours to reach me. That's 90+ minutes each time. I'm only about a mile and a half away. When you call they just tell you it's on the way and there's nothing they can do. Furthermore, Indian is a cuisine that you need utensils for. India Garden is the only delivery place I've ever encountered that will deliver soup, without a spoon. This is a mistake I only made once. It's rather frustrating when you wait almost two hours for food and then have no way to eat it... When called out on this they say that you have to specifically request utensils when you order. Good, in theory, except they seem to ignore it when you do. The bottom line is that, when it comes to delivery, you can do better. This place is good, but so frustrating that the (rather high) price doesn't come within a country mile of being worth the effort. read more

I ordered take out; got daal makhni, garlic naan, mango lassi, aloo tiki chaat (not on the menu but it's fantastic). Portion sizes are generous. Ordered medium-spicy and loved it. Only took them 20mins to make all of the food. Haven't dined in, but highly recommend the food. read more

The food was really good, I especially liked the butter chicken (call and make sure they have it on the buffet before you go if that's what you want). It's certainly never going to be as good as the stuff we get back home, but it IS as authentically Indian as it can possibly get here in B-Town. Its competitors, Bombay Cafe and Taste of India, are a far cry from it - the former being cheap and of inferior quality and the latter being unreasonably priced and unauthentic - completely pandering to the American palate and listing dishes which don't even belong on an Indian menu! read more

The food is awesome, the best indian food in btown. The price is affordable with a huge portion. The waitress and the owner are so nice and they sometimes give out discount to the regular customers. If you are a student, you can actually get the student discount. The restaurant often has some discount on the hooked apps to, be sure to check the app. I highly recommend the butter chicken or the lamb briyani. read more

I've never had a bad experience with India Garden, so I'm confused by all of the negative reviews. Since Bombay Cafe shut down, and was replaced with Amrit, it has been my go-to for butter chicken, samosas, and naan (best in town - IMO). The staff is extremely friendly, and they're always willing to make up for their mistakes. They're lunch buffet is one of the best things, so come hungry! I enjoy the usually quiet and unique atmosphere. Also, delivery (30-45 min) from Btownmenus is my guilty pleasure. I'm always ordering food to keep me company in my studies. read more

Go to Indian buffet. Simple and delicious. Only difficulty is not knowing what I'm eating because the tags above the choices are normally just the dish name, which not being Indian makes it harder to know what it is. It doesn't matter though, because they are all excellent choices. read more

India Garden has the best masala in town. I went for a buffet and I loved all the thick, rich, spiced sauces, but the masala is the one I kept returning to get. It's always fun to eat at a restaurant that is in an old, charming house and that is what the Fourth Street restaurants, including India Garden, have to provide. Me and my partner always order the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Chicken Biryani, as well as the Garlic Naan and it is SPECTACULAR. The food is the beat Indian food you will find in Bloomington; the staff are always friendly and patient with your order and the interior of the restaurant is beautiful. My reasoning for giving two stars is mostly based on how filthy this restaurant is. I'm telling you, the front of house was so messy and dirty that I was nervous about the parts of the restaurant that we can't see as customers. The food tasted alright, but I couldn't enjoy it because I was worried whether or not it would give me food poisoning. I'm not exaggerating when I say my shoes stuck to the rug in front of the buffet. This rug felt like someone had dumped a two liter of soda on it, it was so sticky. There was junk mail piled on the floor under a table. The salad looked unimpressive, AND the lettuce was turning brown. I mean, come on. Splurge on some fresh lettuce, would you? They wiped out table with a sopping rag right before we sat down, which was less than appetizing. My silverware also felt fairly sticky. The air is also very humid in there, and it's perplexing. Is it built on top of a hot springs? I went to this location back when they had first moved in to the building, and it was not as bad. Clearly, they haven't cleaned it since. We usually go to Taste of India down the street but decided to try India Garden this time. They seemed to be incredibly understaffed, but there were only a few other tables seated. When we walked in, we were greeted with a warm, "I'm really busy right now," so we offered to seat ourselves. It was about 10 minutes before anyone even brought out a menu and table settings. We waited another 10 minutes without as much as a glass of water or being asked for our drink order. We just got up and walked to Taste of India, which was reliably magnificent. The food reminds me of my Indian mother-in-law's cooking--my favorite part of visiting India! They have a great mix of spicy dishes and milder curries so you can't go wrong. My mother is being introduced to new food and eating out, so this wasn't the best option for her. It is much smaller and thus more crowded, and there aren't as many options. We were getting desperate for Indian food last night, so ventured to India Garden. Unfortunately, we are still desperate for decent Indian food. The first clue was the complimentary Papadum. Normally it is very crispy and flavorful. This seemed like it had been sitting out in the high humidity all day. It was soggy and tasteless. Next, we had a Mixed Grill Tandoori. The shrimp were so overcooked they were barely chewable. On the other hand, the tandoori chicken leg was very undercooked and almost raw on the inside. The chicken tikka was bland and tasteless, almost like they had forgotten the seasoning. The final dish was Lamb Rogan Josh. While the lamb was tender, the brown gravy had little flavor; where were the spices normally associated with this dish. There was also one black and crunchy something hidden in the gravy that seemed like something Andrew Zimmern would have tasted somewhere, but at least he would have known what he was eating. Even the rice had some chunks requiring a knife and fork to break down some of the pieces. The only decent item was the plain naan. Overall, this had to be the worst Indian food meal we have ever had. There was a lot of it not eaten. I wouldn't give this restaurant even one * if possible. As poorly cooked as the tandoori chicken was, the health inspectors should shut it down. read more

Was just quoted 10-15 minutes and took 45+ to fulfill order....it never used to be like this. I'm down going to give it ~6 months or so and maybe give It another try. I have heard of health code violations here as well. Many of the same people from before and they are nice but terrible misquoted service. They never even ran my card after 10+ minutes. I can't attest to the experience when ordering in, but the experience when dining at the India Garden deserves more credit than most these reviews suggest. The service is polite and quick. The food is quite good, especially the tandoor dishes. The best aspect in my opinion is the value. My wife and I typically spend roughly forty dollars for two enteees, drinks, an appetizer, tax, and tip. On the other hand, their a la carte food has actually been pretty decent. Their chicken curry and garlic naan are especially good. However, I stopped going here a few months ago for a very specific reason, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned this in the reviews so far. Cockroaches. Last time I was there was for a buffet, and there were so many cockroaches. They were on the buffet table, and when I picked up a piece of naan, something dropped off and I initially thought it was a burnt piece of naan. No, it wasn't. When I went up to pay, a cockroach crawled across the counter as I signed for my payment. Only reason I'm giving two stars is because their dinner menu is actually decent, and if they fix their roach problem, I might consider going back. read more
