A bit disappointed in this Indian restaurant. It seems that the reviews were highly recommended, but unfortunately, this food did not live up to our expectations. The Paneer Makhani was absolutely flavorless and just tasted of tomato sauce. The Mutter Methi Malai also felt very lackluster and without the use of fresh methi leaves vs the boxed kind. We ordered medium and both dishes were mild at best. The Naan was good and the best part. The service was also lacking as the waiter only came to see how we were doing when we were done with our meals and to offered a to go box. It was only then also that we got our water refilled. They were quite busy so it is understandable but still did not make our experience Satisfactory. Typical vibe for an Indian restaurant. We will not be returning to this restaurant.

Ordered: butter chicken, rice, garlic cheese naan, raita, chai tea iced. Service - sufficient, not hovering. Ambiance is good. For the main dish, they ask the spice level you want, I am a bland person so I had mild, but maybe someday I will be brave and try the medium level. Haha. Butter chicken is top notch, so tasty and filling. Garlic naan, I could eat this on the daily it's just delicious. Raita- yogurt dip, runnier than I was accustomed to, but taste was good. Chai- I wished I had ordered the mango lassi instead, as I prefer a stronger spice presence in my chai. Rice was good. I think it has cumin in it, but idk.

They are new and systems are evolving, but they are also learning fast. As anyone who has ever worked food service or small business knows, it's a ton of work. Food is excellent. The fact that they are packed from opening until about 7:30pm every evening they're open is a sign of how delicious it is. We've eaten here twice. First time was take-out. I walked in and asked about wait time for a to go order. (Every table was filled and there was a line of about 10 people waiting, and having read some of the other whiny reviews about long wait times, I just wanted to manage my own expectations.) The woman at the register estimated 45-60 mins. I ordered, went home, came back 50 mins later, and my food was ready. Lamb vindaloo, mango chicken, veggie pakora, palaak paneer, butter chicken, naan, a lentil and bean dish, and papadum. Spice level medium. Big hit at home. A week later we came back for dine-in at 7:30pm. Seated right away although all but one table full. Ordered spread pictured below. Mix of medium and spicy, meat and vegetarian. Water refilled 3-4 times. Noise level decent for conversation. This is such a welcome addition to the TVC cuisine options. Wish them all the best as they come fully up to speed.

No sauce, just dry chicken n veg...this is the first time I tried this place. Definitely the worst version on "Indian food" I've ever received

Samosa Chaat, Shahi Paneer, Garlic Naan

Fabulous food and quick service! This is a place to keep your eye on, they will be popular this summer and beyond. Well blended masalas, stellar naans from the tandoor, amazing samosa chaat. Such friendly service. We will be back. Our picture is not great, but the food really was!

This is a photo of the bones that made up the majority of my meal

The goat tikka masala was 80% bones and 10% gristle and fat. The waitress acted like she was doing me a favor making me wait for 7 minutes for her to take my order.

Mango lassi, hot chai latte, aloo gobi, chicken vindaloo, butter chicken makhani, rice, raita. All delicious at India Garden!

I'm not sure if times have changed the attitude of recent staff, with covid essentially putting most people on edge and stressed out, but as of yesterday was the first time I was treated with less than impressive service. I've always been greeted with warm and friendly smiles, when a person wasn't required to wear a mask, obviously, and always a welcoming hello from the gentlemen that run the store. I noticed there was now a female employee. I walked in with my son, we both had masks on, my son even had gloves on, because that's what makes him feel safe. The place was a bit busy, so we didn't receive a greeting upon entering. No biggie. My son and I picked out some gum, and weaved through the aisles. We were on our way to a playground, on foot, so I had a rolled up kite visibly sticking out of my purse. I'm not sure if this put the female employee on edge, but everywhere we went, she was only a few feet away, staring at us. We picked out some drinks, and immediately after she walked over to where we got our drinks and opened the door, like she was doing inventory. Then we waited in line to check out. She refused to go to an open register and check us out, as we waited behind someone else that was paying. The reason I come to this conclusion is because while we were waiting in line, some young man walked through the door, went to the same area we picked out our drinks, then stood in line behind us. She immediately ushered that guy over to check him out, even though we were in line before him. She glared at me specifically the entire time I was in the store. Pretty unbelievable and a bit confusing, as I felt like I was being profiled and somehow discriminated against. Maybe it was just in my head, but sometimes intuition proves otherwise. I still love and respect the establishment, but that woman needs a serious attitude adjustment. I'm not sure if it was simply because I was a young female, or what the deal was, the kite I had in my purse, maybe unsettled her...doesn't matter. I did nothing wrong. I've never been stalked throughout the store like that before. I'll still be happy to give my service to the store, it was just rude behavior on her part that I never have experienced before there.

The selection isn't huge as they have a smaller footprint but we found pretty much everything we needed in this small town market. Candy, Sprite, and s'mores fixin's for my little cousin, blueberries and oatmeal for my grandma, beer for my husband and uncle, frozen soft pretzels and mustard for my aunt, brats making sausage and peppers for the group for my mom, and Moomers ice cream and cans of Bubly for me. Prices were decent, especially for a smaller market, and they had a surprising amount of locally made goods. Produce selection was a little small (we had to go into Sutton's Bay to get oranges, for example) but all pantry items we needed were easy to find. The shop, because it's small, makes checking out a little challenging when there are more than a few folks in there. At one point my mom and I were looking at the ice cream selection and a line of about 4 people filed behind us. We didn't realize the coolers were adjacent to the second cash register! Navigating out was a challenge but everyone was very kind about it. Admittedly, though I read the amazing reviews for their Indian eats, we did not get any. But I'm definitely game to try it out next time.

My friend who lives here frequents this restaurant and this was my first time here. We ordered their naan, which was ok (tasted store bought), as they were out (make sure they aren't out), their chicken tikka masala, which was pretty good and their shahi paneer, which was also pretty good. Their food is on the mild side, I got a 3 level but could've done a 5 level. They do give you something to spice up your food. I'm going with the assumption that they tone down their food to make it more accessible to people that normally don't order Indian food. Service was pretty good too!

None of our friends had tried Indian before, and my husband and I are pretty limited as to what we have had in the past. My husband and I split an order of Chicken Korma, an order of Samosas and some garlic naan. Everything was real good, but I didn't feel the Samosas were worth the price that we paid. I can get better at Trader Joe's. Two friends got the Butter Chicken, with one getting the spicy sauce on the side. The guy that got the sauce on the side was very thankful that he got it that way as the other guy could hardly eat his because it was too spicy for him. Keep that in mind when you order. All of our friends enjoyed their first experience with Indian food. Just a heads up, we were served on disposable plates. There was a sign on the door that they were missing a few employees so they didn't have anyone to wash the dishes. I don't know how true that is, and while it didn't affect the way the food tasted, it DID affect the experience of eating in a nice restaurant.

The halibut was very well seasoned and perfectly cooked, and the risotto was a great accompaniment. My fried perch was, as expected, not as good as the halibut, but still quite above average. The prices were higher than a "regular" sit down, but I felt it was a good value compared to a place like Artisan at Delamar or the restaurants at Grand Traverse Resort (we paid about $85 + tip for the halibut, perch, 1 lobster bisque, and a soda) The location is certainly one of the main draws here, as the restaurant is located right on the water, with a great view of the west bay. We were very happy to get a table with a good view of the water, but it seems like the vast majority of tables also have a good view, aside from the bar seating. The decoration and furniture was tasteful and cute -- not quite fancy, white tablecloth vibes, but much more elevated than your average taxidermy-infested northern Michigan dinner spot (ahem, Nonna Lisa's in Mackinaw...) The service was one thing we encountered that I felt was less than completely perfect. Strangely, it seemed like our waiter was a bit overwhelmed or something, despite the moderate crowd, and forgot to bring our soup until about 2 or 3 minutes before the entree came out, and then did not bring the ciabatta bread until after the entree. We also did not get our Coke until after the entrees came out, which I thought was a bit weird for a place as nice as this. But, I know things like that tend to happen in food service, so I don't hold it against them. It was also nice that the manager came to chat with us about TC and our hometown. Overall, we loved this place, and my girlfriend is begging me to come back. We would love to make this place a tradition!
