The restaurant is located on Mt. Hope Avenue, which can be a busy area, but one thing I really appreciated was the convenient parking behind and along the side of the building. That makes stopping in much easier than many places along this stretch of the road. Although the restaurant itself is relatively small, the layout feels open and spacious, which creates a comfortable atmosphere to sit down and enjoy your meal. Food I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala with Garlic Naan, and it was absolutely delicious. The sauce was rich, creamy, and full of flavor without being overly heavy. One thing that stood out to me was that the dish included potatoes in the sauce, which blended beautifully with the chicken and spices. When combined with the basmati rice, it created a very satisfying and balanced meal. The garlic naan was soft, warm, and perfect for dipping into the sauce. If you enjoy Indian cuisine, this is definitely a combination worth trying. Service The service was friendly, welcoming, and attentive. It's a good place if your looking for some real Indian food, really only for takeout though. There is some seating inside but it's mainly for takeout. Food comes in plastic dishes, which is not preferred if your looking to eat in.. But the food speaks for itself.. Chicken tikki masala is quite nice. I was skeptical of this place because of the reviews, but I was hungry and it was the best option nearby. I walked into the restaurant, it was small. I ordered the Lamb Korma to go, which was a little on the expensive side because of the "Express" in the name. I got my food, which by the way was a massive amount of food. Suddenly, the price makes sense. My combo got me a bunch of rice, korma, a side of stewed potatoes and a piece of naan. The korma was wonderful, so much heavy cream it was a treat lol. The potatoes were decent but the sauce could have used a tiny bit more flavor, I couldn't tell what it was supposed to be. The naan was a little chewy so I didn't eat much of it. I've had far better Indian food. The chicken makhani was soupy and barely had any flavor and not a lot of chicken....when you get Indian food you expect lots of flavor, this chicken makhani tastes like it was watered down to stretch the batch further which I'm almost positive it was. I got 4 samosas and only got enough chutney for 1. I didn't get my naan bread with my order either that would've been helpful to soak up the bland soupy Makhani sauce. After that health department fiasco at the South Clinton avenue location a couple of years ago I thought I'd give India house another chance. Looks I'll be sticking with Taj Mahal for Indian food. Food was great; My boyfriend who lives in Toronto decided as a way to celebrate our anniversary we would purchase each other dinner for the special night. I was a little worried that the food might not be that good; But the worst that might happened would be I don't eat everything and then just toss the rest. Not very excited by my experience. My husband and I were looking for somewhere convenient to grab an early dinner. We arrived at 4:00 pm and didn't walk out with out food until 4:37. For starters, there was only one staff person running the whole operation from taking orders, to cooking, to busing tables. When I ordered one of the specials, he didn't think he had the ingredients to make it. Then he "pushed back" when I ordered tea-it would take up too much space on the stove to prepare... When we finally did get out food, the nan was stale, the rice undercooked, and the shrimp curry bland even though I had asked for it extra spicy. India House Express is the latest expansion in the India House empire. It is located in a spot that has seen several express style restaurants open and close very quickly. The building is small and has about 4-5 tables inside. The interior looks updated but is still very much a casual quick lunch ambiance. You order up at the counter and they bring it to you when it is ready. I have gotten my food to go both times so I have no insight on how good the servers are. The person taking my order at the counter has always been friendly and helpful. They have a lunch special menu (offered 11:30am to 3pm on weekdays) where you get a small portion of a main dish, a side dish, easily 2 cups of rice and a piece of naan for $7.51 (after tax). I have ordered off of it twice. Both times I got the chicken curry (yes, I got it extra spicy..how did you know?). The chicken curry was pretty good and had a good amount of heat. The side dish on my visit today was a potato dish. So....I literally ate rice, potatoes, naan and 6 small cubes of chicken breast. The only thing missing is the marathon I should run after that many carbs. Though slightly illegal (maybe?), I find it easier to park in the CVS lot. Also, if you are going south on Mt Hope, you will have to take a U turn at the Mt Hope and Crittenden/E.Henrietta mess to get into this place Overall, I did enjoy my lunch and will go back there again. I just wish they would give you more protein and less carbs. But for $7.51, I guess I can't complain too much. yesterday at 6pm my daughter picked up our order for 6 dishes. Drove back to Spencerport and food was still hot and servings were huge. Best Indian food, in our opinion of course but we've tried every Indian restaurant in the city and for decades. it's number one. Thank you! what a feast! For your Indian food fix, India House Express is an option. Right on Mt Hope, close to the hospital and cemetery, it is a convenient spot for travelers and does in the area around lunch time. In hungry mode, I gravitated to the butter chicken. I will advise that though the food was tasty, it seemed bland overall. Like they watered down the sauce or didn't season everything properly. Part of me suspected they toned down the spice due to the clientele but figure if someone is going in to get Indian food, they know what they are getting themselves into. I am not saying it needs to be so hot you taste it twice, BUT should still have flavor. Overall, the staff was friendly and the price was what you would expect from a lunch rush. I ordered here several times hoping that it would be better than the last, but they continue to disappoint me. The chicken is always overcooked. The rice is always hard and under-cooked. I don't know what's so hard about cooking rice? Service is often pretty bad, the owner is always angry and unfriendly. I would love it if they improved the quality of their food. This is a quick takeaway version of the India House Restaurant. Surprisingly they have a fairly comprehensive menu instead of the buffet-like experience that I expected. I could imagine this being an issue if there was a rush on the cook. The takeaway was well packed with all the proper cutlery and accessories that one might need. Putting the nan in the plastic container with entree and rice did make it a little soggy. The rice portion was generous but the entree portions were quite small compared to what you would get at their full service restaurant. I know the bread and rice are traditionally the staple but it still felt too far out of balance for me. This place gets three stars primarily because it offers a slightly different kind of Indian cuisine. The taste itself, isn't spectacular. I was excited that this place offers kaati rolls (wraps), which if made right, are brilliant. However, the rolls itself are store bought, instead of being made fresh, which takes the fizz out of the whole thing. I am not an expert on Indian Cuisine, but India House Express fulfilled my craving for spicy food and is only a short walk away from U of R, which is great for students. I asked the man that was working the register what the spiciest thing on the menu was and he told me that the Vindaloo was spicy, and that's what I got. No surprise - it was really spicy! It would have been nice to have a glass of milk with my food, but I knew what I was getting myself into. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The reason I gave this 4 stars is because of their options. If you want Indian food for later in the day you can quickly grab one of their frozen lunches which you can heat up and enjoy later. I also really appreciated their sign titled, "what's that?" - a run down of what everything on the menu was for those of us that are not familiar with the names of Indian food. Was actually pleasantly surprised by this. I found the curries tasted better than the restaurant. Had the vindaloo, it was the perfect spice for me. I like spicy food and it hit the stop, made my nose run in a good way. Sampled the palak paneer. Mild and not extremely flavorful but that is to be expected with palak paneer so no complaint there. The only complaint was the wait to order. Took a while for only three people in the whole joint. Try the guava juice. Refreshing. Will be returning for sure. read more

I took my husband today since we wanted something new. We ordered potato samosas, chicken tikka masala, and lamb kebab meal. The samosas we super yummy. My tikka masala was just ok (the box from costco is better), the side of potatoes was perfectly cooked but lacking in flavor, the naan was fine and the lamb was bomb. I think the rice was slightly undercooked, it wasn't fluffy or flavorful. I don't think we will try it again. read more

I have been coming here for the last 4 years but unfortunately I am leaving Rochester next month. I promised myself that I would put in good reviews of my favorite restaurants before leaving town. I happen to work next door at the hospital and this has always been a great place to get food on the way home. The food is always consistent and very tasty for an express restaurant. Definitely surprised by some of the negative reviews. The pricing is very reasonable for the large portion. I had just landed in Rochester after 2 long flights with a long layover, and came here for a late lunch. The place was small, but looked nice and cosy. There was a lone gentleman at the counter who informed us that they were no longer serving lunch. No worries, the other items on the menu looked good too. I went with a lamb naan wrap, and mango lassi. The food came out in decent time, though it seemed like ages to me since I was famished. They say that hunger is the best sauce. But, even when I was that hungry, I only managed to eat half of the wrap. I do not know what I would have done with the food had I not been starving. The lamb was dry and lacked taste. The naan was basically a tough pita, and the dressing was the absolute spolier...pieces of raw onion with some weird vinaigrette which did not hold together the bread and meat, and merely dripped as you tried to work your way through the wrap. For some reason, the Indian eatery tried to give the food a Mexican flavor by wrapping the wrap like a burrito and adding a side of chips and salsa (Indian papadum and cilantro and tamarind chutney in this case). Even the chutneys were such a disgrace, packaged chutneys from the Indian store taste so much better. Their only saving grace - the mango lassi, it was pretty decent. read more

I've been here for lunch a few times. The gentleman behind the counter comes across as a bit gruff and unfriendly but I suspect that he's not and perhaps that's part of the charm of this place. I'm definitely not a connoisseur of Indian food but I do like the chicken Makhani lunch special here. It comes out a bit hot (as in temperature not too spicy) but I'd rather have that than too cold. Being so hot makes the chicken a bit overcooked though. The serving size is generous and the cost reasonable compared to other places in college town. The samosas are pretty tasty as well. The atmosphere is very casual and dining area fairly small. There is a freezer where apparently you can pick up frozen meals if you want. read more
