Yall, I'm obsessed. The staff here are so helpful and friendly. They could totally roll their eyes at me ordering my food at "white girl spice level" but they dont. They make thoughtful suggestions and come back to check on me instead. I ordered the paneer xacuti plus garlic naan and a beer. I genuinely cant wait to go back and try other options, even though I could happily each the xacuti and garlic naan for the rest of forever. Good to know: the leftovers are maybe even better somehow. We stopped at Thali of India on our way driving from Cleveland to Boston. Because of rainstorms and traffic jams and route closures we arrived shortly before closing, around 2:15 pm, but the staff was very nice and accommodated us. The buffet was an interesting mix of meat and vegetarian dishes. Some were standard but others were unusual, creating a nice variety of choices. Everything was great. I tried the chicken kabob, a tofu dish, saag paneer, a dish with jalapeno dipped in chickpea flour and fried, and other dishes as well. The naan was very good. I had fresh fruit for desert but there also were things like golub jamun, and also ice cream of various flavors. Came in on a Friday night with a group of friends and could not have left more satisfied. We were seated quickly, though they did ask if we had a reservation and we didn't. Service was quick as well. There are many menu options for both vegetarians and meat eaters alike and you can choose your spice level. I ordered the chicken tikka masala which was so incredibly rich with flavor and spices. It's been a while since I frequented Thali of India, but recently I've ordered pick up here multiple times. I didn't realize they had an online ordering system that offers really good deals. I had an introductory offer, and then for reviewing I also got more points and another deal on future order. I suppose that's their ploy to keep you coming back, but honestly, the food is what makes me come back again and again. The last few times I've ordered I went with Aloo Gobi and a butter masala or makahni dish. The Aloo Gobi is honestly my favorite dish, and it was so flavorful and aromatic. I love the smell of the spices, it just gives you a feel of being embrased by your beloved aunti! It's always a great sign when the dining room is full and there's a line of people waiting for pick up orders. And despite the volume of people, food is consistently ready on time. Best Indian food in Rochester, hands down. I've been here for the buffet numerous times and it's just spot on every single time. There's a lot of good Indian food in Rochester but for whatever reason, when you have Thali it's just edges out all the others in terms of the delicate flavors the food offers. You'll have to see for yourself to see what I mean. Anyway, we also did a takeout order tonight. Although our order said it wouldn't be ready for another half hour, I figured I'd stop in just in case is was ready early. It wasn't. We had our baby in the car having a fit and I let them know nicely that we might have to cancel our order due to the timing. No harm, no foul on either end. About 3 minutes later we got a phone call from Thali letting us know they would have our order ready in 2-3 minutes should we still want it. Of course we did! We swung back into the parking lot where we were met with a lovely lady already waiting to hand us our bag. Super thoughtful gesture. You just don't get service like that anymore. Give em a shot. GRUB HUB was scheduled to deliver my dinner and the live status kept pushing out the delivery. I finally called GrubHub and asked for a status update after an hour and 15 minutes, come to find out the idiot GrubHub driver left it outside in the cold without ringing the doorbell to let me know that it had arrived .. in addition the Live status that I was getting showed that the order was not delivered yet. I would strongly suggest firing GrubHub and using doordash or some other service because clearly these uneducated morons are clueless. While the food tasted okay it was ice cold because it had been sitting in the snow that's why I'm only giving one star .. get rid of GrubHub and maybe your service will improve. read more

So far, my favorite Indian food place in Rochester. Staff keeps changing but overall very friendly and willing to make you happy. Prices are very acceptable and food tastes really good. Make sure to ask what shortages they are going through before you place an order. If (for example) you ordered lamb dish or a mixed plate while they're short on lamb, they might substitute the lamb with chicken without asking or they might just let you know after they make your dish. It happened to me twice, so make sure to ask and to communicate very clearly. I mentioned that on my last visit and they made sure that I have my mixed grill plate with its full collection, it's my favorite plate. Sometimes they're short on staff so things might get longer to prepare. Overall, the food is delicious and the place is clean and well put together. I'll still go back and enjoy their menu. Oh, it was delightful to sample a little of different dishes, from Chicken Tandori to succulent mini meatballs ,naam, fried bread, rices, vegetable dishes. We came again last night. It was a regular night no buffet today. We shared Vegetable Somosas. Crunchy and tasty filling drizzled with the tamarind chutney a nice start. We love coming here for the buffet- One of our two go-to places indian buffet. They are always busy, so it tells me it's enjoyed by many! The food itself has been good and has featured dishes I hadn't seen - like a cabbage dish- a little too salty for me when I was there. But overall, will keep going. I didn't believe there were any Indian buffets left post-COVID, so I was happy to see Thali thriving. I enjoyed the buffet and appreciated the diversity and randomness of dishes: dosa, chicken biriyani, goat curry, gobi manchurian, samosas, bhatura, etc. Things for the Desi and non-Desi palate (though nothing was hot enough for me so I added the coriander chutney and pickles liberally). My order was - how should I say this...a basic-bitch-ordering-Indian masterpiece. All your basic requirements: samosas, chicken makhani, and palak paneer. I have tried makhani at most of the spots around town and I believe Thali is my favorite (and also Rebel Pi since they use the same makhani on their naan pizza). It is by far the sweetest, which might be a turn off to some. The palak paneer was delightful and the naan bread here, when ordering for dinner or for takeout, comes with two pieces per order. Soft and perfect for dipping and scraping and salivating. I want to try the lunch buffet VERY badly, so I can hopefully breakout from my "I don't know what to order" anxiety. Prices here are crazy low for the amount of food. Everything I ordered was less than $35 and is 4 meals for event the hungriest of humans among us (aka...me). Eat a samosa too! We dined there on a Monday at 6:00. They had their dinner buffet. We had reservations for 6:00 and when we got there three members of staff separately came up to ask us how many we were. After explaining that we had reservations, we finally were seated. No one greeted us at our table. They just assumed we would know what we were supposed to do-- some Indian restaurants that have a buffet also offer a menu. After I asked the busser if we needed a menu and found out we didn't then we went up to the buffet. The food was average, to below average. Very greasy, and very skimpy in meats. They also had a vegan side. Both sides left a lot to be desired in terms of variety and taste. I have been to other Indian nuggets and they were presented with much more care and quality than what my experience was at Thali. So to sum up; lacking in flavor. Very greasy. Low on proteins. Disorganized. Poor communication with diners. We had to ask how to pay. We actually could have walked right out without paying! read more

I have been wanting to go to an all you can eat Indian buffet for about 10 years now. This was my first time and I picked this place because it was recommended to me. They sure were right about this place - everything was delicious and not only delicious but very clean too. They had just enough food where I could try a little bit of everything with out leaving super stuffed but sure could if I wanted to !! My wife and I had not been to Thali in years. Mostly pre-Covid. We finally decided to go back tonight. When we entered, we didn't see any familiar faces. But not to worry ... the ambience, the service, and the food were excellent. We had lamb, chicken and beef dishes, along with eggplant bhata and a bread basket. We ordered a ton of stuff from here so we could try lots of stuff. We used Doordash, and they were closed for lunch when I placed the order. It took over an hour once they opened, just FYI. I'm vegetarian and my husband isn't, so we shared all the veggie stuff. I'll list it. Garlic butter Naan- this was ok, but not amazing. Maybe it loses something being delivered. Assorted Veggie Appetizers - This whole thing disappointed me. I wanted to try several, so that's why we tried this. I wouldn't get any of it again. Palak Paneer - This was good, and seems to typically be swimming in sauce. I'd prefer more paneer and less sauce, but still good. Gobi Manchurian - My husband picked this one, and it's cauliflower. It was our favorite thing of all of it. If we order again, I'd get this as my entree. It wasn't super spicy. It was really good. Bhature (fried dough) - I love this at other places. This was just ok. I ate it though, lol. My husband also got these, which I didn't try. He liked everything. Kachumber salad Onion Bhaji Fish Pakora We ordered all this stuff, and they only gave us one mint sauce. I thought that was a lot of food for just one sauce. My husband actually didn't like it, so it worked out. I liked it. We'd do it again and probably order like this. I just love this place. The service is wonderful and the food is delicious. We order for takeout mostly- but if you like Palak Paneer, this is THE place to go!! They don't skimp out on the paneer at all. It's the things like this that keep us going back again and again. If you get tikka masala it's not going to be just all sauce. We went with a huge party of 11 without reservations and was seated immediately, ordered the chicken tikki masala, butter chicken, momo, chicken 65, goat curry, lamb curry, and naan. Take it from me, growing up I lived on the East Coast of South Africa for four years. It's a beautiful part of the world that happens to have a large Indian population, and I was proud to call it my home. In those four years between restaurants and eating with family friends, I know how good Indian food can be. Eating at Thali of India felt like going back home. The portions are generous, the flavor authentic, and the ingredients fresh. You can tell that every part of the meal was made with great care. My wife and I ate here as part of a vacation, and we are amazed at the quality, service, and value of the meal. We've eaten in Indian restaurants in both Boston and New York city, and I can confidently say that this is some of the best Indian food you can get on the East Coast. Used to go here a lot. The buffet was diverse and delicious. Spices were delicate. Now, too much hot spice and not enough taste. Still diverse, but limited non spicy dishes. Desserts are mostly canned puddings including the thick and pasty rice pudding without a hint of rose water or nuts. People are friendly and pleasant. read more
