Real menu is better than the buffet! Buffet is fine, I go there on purpose. Then due to the stay-at-home rules, I got delivery from the real menu and this was a revelation. "Medium spicy" has some burn! Their spice blend, when they really get going, turns out to be delicious, with lots of nuance. Before everything, I'd gone back to my long-ago favorite Indian restaurant in San Francisco, my gold standard for affordable Indian comfort food and... India Palace is better. India Palace's current pakoras are the best thing to happen in fried food (and there's even the excuse they contain vegetables). The naan with the dried fruit is everything. How smart is the spicing? I'd ordered two dishes that both involved chicken in creamy tomato sauce (yes, I'm boring). They are absolutely, distinctly different (as promised on the menu) -- one might be a substitution but if so, it was a thoughtful substitution, which is all I ask. The chicken is happy safe white-meat chicken and it's all delicious. If you let me go on any longer, I will enthuse over the basmati rice, grain by grain. read more

In a town with a rather impressive allotment of Indian food, India Palace is my default and favorite. The lunch buffet is a pretty sweet deal at $9.95 a head, but I've also gone a number of times for dinner. The restaurant is very low-key with a friendly attentive staff. It's a great place to go with a big group. The food is pretty awesome, with a lot of variety. The lunch buffet is fantastic, and it lets you try all sorts of goodies. The nan is excellent and tastes good with everything else. I prefer it to the rice. I don't know all the names of the various dishes, but I'll make it easy for you - it's all delicious, try everything. Chickpeas, lamb, chicken swimming in curries of various colors and spice levels, blushing tandoori, spinach and cheese...let it all bleed together and sop it into your stomach. You'll be happy. You'll be even happier when you go back and indulge in dessert - gulab jamun and kheer. Gulab jamun is Indian for "incredibly sweet and addictive deep-fried donut hole soaked to delectable softness in milk and honey syrup." I eat it with little spoonfuls of kheer, which is essentially flavored milk with shreds of fruit and rice. When I actually sit down and stare down a menu, I tend to order the chicken curry or chicken vindaloo, as spicy as they make it. The first time I did this, the waiter asked if I was sure. Clearly, he doesn't get too many Korean customers. In case you guys were wondering how spicy India Palace goes, the answer is "pleasantly spicy but many chili stickers short of painful." I also occasionally get the mango lassi, which takes me all of 4 seconds to slurp down it's that good, and always enjoy the complimentary basket of deep-fried cracker flatbread things with various chutneys. I've never had anything bad at India Palace. My only complaint is that their chicken is sometimes a little dry. This rarely matters as the slathering of sauces compensates, but it's worth mentioning. The service is consistently stellar. Besides dining in the restaurant several times, I've also catered an event with India Palace and they were wonderful to work with. I asked them to recommend a number of dishes, specified the number of people, and they took care of the rest. For an extra $20 they also supplied us with plates, utensils, cups, and soda. A while back I came here for the lunch buffet and came away slightly disappointed. The items (butter chicken, Navratan Korma, Daal, fried pakoras, chicken tandoori, etc.) tasted all very plain and nothing stood out. For the $10 that was paid, I expected better service and better food. The restaurant itself is tastefully decorated. The outside almost looks like a small house but is quaint and clean on the inside. The parking is mostly regulated to street spots and its conveniently located in an area where it makes the journey here a walkable one from the Yale campus. It also is a convenient option for student lunches I'm sure and I wouldn't be surprised if this place exploded during the lunch hour on any given week day. In spite of that, I should probably give this place another try. If they are indeed the "best" then I certainly caught them on one of their (severely) off-days. read more

Indian is one of the few cuisines I had never tried...and Scott T kept talking up this place. After a trip to Ikea one night at the end of August....over to Indian Palace we went. It's a very basic, but clean, restaurant with very friendly service. They had some funky Indian shows playing on a TV in the back...the commercials were interesting to say the least! We went on a Wednesday night and were the only people in the restaurant for a bit...so I can speak on how busy they are on the weekends. I had been warned that Indian can be spicy....but that's okay by me, because I dig spicy =-) After going over the menu and having not a clue what anything was....Chicken Vindaloo was ordered. What came out was delicious little chunks of chicken and potato in an amazing sauce. Serving over white rice...delish. We also split an Indian beer...very good, but be warned...very strong. Definitely a place I'll go back to....but I do want to check out some of the other Indian places NH has to offer before I make my final call on what is "good" Indian food. read more

The fourth restaurant in New Haven I've tried. Tasty food. Ordered the Special Dinner for 2 off Eat24 for delivery. Huge amount of food and quick delivery. Soup (2), naan (3-4 pieces), pappadum and raita (plenty), rice (huge container), tandoori chicken (has veggies too, two pieces of chicken), chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, tea (2), and kheer. Fed me for days on end, but I love Indian food and got a discount! All of the food was flavorful. The naan was chewy, not the best I've had. The chicken and paneer were tender, and there was a lot of sauce (great for dipping naan or just pouring on rice). I would order from here again! read more

Tucked away in this nondescript location, across from Miya's sushi, lies one of New Haven's lesser known treasures. And by "treasures," I mean sources of such scorchingly hot Indian food that I can't help but wonder who died in order to secure these recipes. Whoever they were... sorry, but worth it. The atmosphere, if you can call it that, is a little on the, uh, minimal and/or strange side. There's a bunch of pictures on the wall representing various aspects of Indian culture, though I can't speak to what they represent specifically because I was too busy pounding water to speak. However, if you love Indian music videos, you are gonna fuckin' love this place. We ordered some garlic naan, lamb saag, and shrimp vindaloo, which was apparently created in the depths of Hell. The naan was quite good, and the saag was an interesting, really enjoyable dish with subtle but complementary flavors. They asked us how hot we wanted the vindaloo. We were feeling brave. Perhaps too brave. Like Icarus, we sought to fly too high. We learned. That shit is hot. Like, legit hot. Luckily, our server continued to bring out pitcher after pitcher of water. They also gave us a complementary order of naan, which is great for absorbing Hellfire. Honestly, it was pretty great. Despite the temperature being about 67 degrees in there, I broke an honest sweat. I guess I can skip cardio today, huh? The portions felt a little small for about 15/plate, but I definitely left full, so perhaps that's just the deceptive presentation. They also gave us some rice pudding to try, though it smelled sort of like suntan lotion, which freaked out my date. I ate it, obviously, because I'm a sick weirdo. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience, and while I might not quite order something so spicy I end up sobbing uncontrollably later, the food was excellent, the service was good, and I finally got to watch some awesome Indian music videos. Buffet for lunch time was superb. Parking can be a bit of a pain, make sure you bring money for the meters. I like indian places that aren't afraid to put different things on the buffet, and aren't afraid to use spices and not "tone it down" for the american crowd. Vegetable Biryani was fantastic, as was the Paneer Makahni. Chicken Tikka Masala was a bit on the dry side, but the sauce was velvety and light. Tandoori Chicken was dry also, but had great carmelization on the outside and hint of smoky flavor that i enjoyed. Naan was out of this world, and they only kept about 4 pieces of the buffet line, so it was coming out fresh every 5 minutes, so fresh in fact you could still see the ghee glistening on top of it. My only complaint is that they had "indian chicken wings", however they tasted just like regular "out of the bag" buffalo wings, nothing indian about them. -1 star. I've only ever been to India Palace for the lunch buffet. At $6.95 it's a great deal. If I've been there a dozen times I can say with certainty the staples that many of us look for were there: Nan, Tandoori chicken, Chicken Tika Masala, Saag Paneer, Biryani, some kind of curry and a lamb dish. It's always hot, fresh and very good. They have other typical traditional dishes too that vary from day to day. Let's not forget the standard chutneys (love em!), salad, and those horribly-sweet-but-i-can't-say-not-to-balls-o-dough-and-honey. Live Indian music plays in the very outdated yet clean and minimalistic dining room. The staff is always friendly. Of the dozen or so Indian restaurants in New Haven that offer a buffet at lunch this one is hard to beat. read more

I don't expect much from Indian restaurants in the US, as they all feature virtually identical menus and the same tired recipes and boring ingredients. You know the drill: potatoes, lentils, chickpeas, etc. India Palace isn't a bad place, though. Sure, it features a generic North Indian menu with the standard options for vegans (potatoes, lentils, chickpeas, etc.), but at least the food here is prepared competently and the service is friendly. Also, they give a discount to students; just show your ID. I had an alu chole ($11.95) and an order or chapati ($3.25). I got the alu chole "hot" instead of medium-hot, which tested my endurance. Ultimately, I pulled through, but don't try this on your own, kiddies: if you're not used to excessive spice, getting a dish "hot" here will ruin your meal. The dish was good, not great. I liked that it wasn't oily, but the chickpeas and potatoes felt industrial-grade bland (meaning, their food service provider is Aramark or Sodexho). A better choice would be to use organic baby potatoes and diced roma tomatoes for the curry base. For $12, it wasn't a huge portion and I think they over-price their dishes (meanwhile, Tandoor next door, charges only $10 for the same meal). The chapati was well-made: light and soft. For $3.25 it was expensive, however. I'll come back to India Palace as they have much cheaper prices during lunch hours. The service is friendly and attentive. India Palace, if you added some more vegan dishes, such as some with tofu, seitan or tempeh, I'd be back in a heartbeat. Also, please offer brown rice. White rice is passe these days. read more

While I still find it silly that they also own the other Indian restaurant down the street, Tandoor, I like India Palace. The decor is nowhere near Indian, but the owners and staff are and they are very very nice people who like to close on time. So as long as you respect that, you'll be fine. The food is consistent and delicious and their naan is fabulous. In fact, I suggest that no matter what you order, you always order it with naan, or if you're not a fan, extra rice. This is actually my favorite Indian restaurant in New Haven. I have mainly dined here for lunch. The lunchtime buffet is an excellent value for money and the staff is very attentive and friendly. Granted, lunch time is not their busiest time. Quite often I've arrived close to the end of lunch and been the only person in there. At dinnertime, I've found the portions to be surprisingly large and the service is still excellent! The food is always piping hot and delicious and quite often I've ordered an additional order to go. The food and service are excellent, but between the restaurant's location on Howe street and the dated look of the decor, sadly it's not really a place that I would recommend to most friends or dine with colleagues. This became our regular choice for Indian food in New Haven. As in, I wrote this review in 2007 and I'm still eating there today. Well, not today, but you know what I mean. The buffet *is* available 7 days a week. And the variety on the buffet is as nice as everyone says it is - you can always find a mix of hot and mild, veggie and meaty, fried and fresh on offer. The hours are convenient and so is the location. The price is right, the nan is refreshed frequently. The staff is friendly too. And I had my first ever carrot halwa here, which is now one of my favorite ways to eat carrots. But I think the lassis are too sweet and the dinner entrees are overpriced. read more

When I started to transition into a plantcentric diet years ago this became one of my regular spots. The variety of of dishes for vegetarians is incredible. They deliver also so when my lazy butt didn't want to get out of my house during a New England winter I was always good. They have a fair amount of vegan options and their staff is well informed of what it entails to e a vegan. They can even transform some of the vegetarian options that have dairy into vegan options with just a word to the chef. The atmosphere is warm and familiar. Even when my son hadn't been there for a minute they recognized him right away. The Sunday buffets are affordable and a good look. If you aren't use to Indian spices get your dishes mild so that you can build up your tolerance. In terms of beverages their mango juice is all of that and they have a fair amount of foreign beers up in there. Check them out. read more

That is nonsense and I hope somehow this gets out. I will try to tone it down! I changed from 5 to 4 stars for eg. I grew up eating Indian food, both home-cooked and restaurant, have eaten in villages across North India, and have eaten in Indian restaurants in New Delhi, London, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Los Angeles. As far as all-you-can-eat buffets go, this little, nondescript restaurant in unglamorous New Haven, CT, is the best I've experienced. I am not claiming this is the best Indian restaurant that I've tried, but, again, in terms of buffets, it is by far. Variety: most buffets have the same standard fare, week in week out. India Palace has the audacity to vary their buffet offerings, so you can actually periodically enjoy new dishes in unlimited quantity. Vegetarian dishes include: Alu Gobi (potato and cauliflwr), Palak Paneer (spinach), Mattar Paneer (peas), Punjabi Kofta (veg balls in cream sauce), pulau (flavored rice), and other less common gems like roasted eggplant. Meat dishes include: Chicken Tikka Masala (of course), lamb (chunks or ground), homestyle chicken curry, some occasional seafood, etc. They always have fresh samosa or pakora, and the naan comes out in regular, piping hot intervals. In addition to a large assortment of fresh vegetables and raita (yogurt) to make your salad, what is striking is the generous selection of sauces and pickles not normally available at buffets (tamarind, mint, mango chutney, mixed pickle, pepper pickle, etc.) Dessert is usually gulab jamun (sweet balls) and kir (rice pudding). Admittedly, they could vary this occasionally. Quality: most indian buffets "cut" their dishes with extra, watery sauce and sparse meat/veg. This buffet consistently serves up rich, thick sauces, as high a quality as many restaurants' a la carte dishes. I find myself worrying that they might be losing money by being so generous and attentive to their buffet food quality. A note on drinks: I've tried both their mango lassi and their masala chai. The lassi, I must regretfully say, left much to be desired. It was watery and tasted like mango juice rather than real mango. The chai, on the other hand, was rich, earthy, dark, sweet and slightly bitter even- really amazing and reminiscent of the steaming hot stuff you can procure from old chai wallahs in India. Great in the winter to top off a gorging session at the buffet. The staff is personable and friendly, and will remember you. It's a great place to dine alone, as a couple, or in a group. The buffet is only $9.95. I've eaten there for dinner too, and the food is similarly amazing and high quality, but I can't stomach paying $15 for a single entree when I can eat so many different unlimited dishes for $5 less for lunch, so I really only frequent the buffet. In a town so depressed (economically and otherwise) as New Haven, with businesses popping up and disappearing overnight, I live in fear that this wonderful, wonderful establishment might follow suit. I have been coming to this place for years. The owners know me now by sight and are very hospitable. The food is fantastic and so is their selection of Indian beer. The atmosphere is laid back but festive and it caters to mostly downtown New Haven people, especially Yale students. If you like spicy food I would suggest getting the Chicken Vindalo with an order of their fabulous naan bread, which is made fresh. The lunch buffet has a decent variety but doesn't change too often, so i tend to skip the buffet and order from the kitchen directly. Weekdays it is not crowded so don't be surprised if you and 1 or 2 others are the only people there but diner time and weekends the place explodes with a flurry of hungry Yalies and people who love powerful and filling food. I live in the Old Lyme area. I drive past a well known Indian restaurant in Branford to go to India Palace. The masala chai is always perfect. Mango Lassi is sweet. What makes this place unique is the thicker-than-normal gravies. So many places dilute their gravies. The Butter Chicken (Makni?), CTM and Seekh Kebabs are amazing. The breads are perfect. Service is excellent. The pricing is great. And, as of spring 2007, the atmosphere has improved with a few renovations. Skip the well known tourist trap restaurants. This place is amazing. My first time at India Palace. The restaurant has average ambiance but the food was very flavorful. The owner is from Punjab, India and I was told that he is the chef. If you like north Indian food, you can't go wrong with this place. Appetizers were not very good (see ratings below). In my opinion, you are better off skipping appetizers. My Queen & I patronized this beautiful restaurant approximately 15 years ago...so today we decided to have lunch & we were extremely impressed & satisfied with the food & staff!!!! The chicken biryani was tasty & delicious, the saag and naan was also awesome, the tandoori chicken was cooked towards perfection. I can go on and on about the food and the staff, but at the end of the day they deserve 5 stars which is a first for me. The India palace in mushrif mall abu dhabi is super bad and is a huge scam, apparently we were going to order one chicken tikka masala and 5 butter naans then the person at the to go counter said that two chicken tikka masalas will be enough for 4 of us so we ordered two which in total cost us 99 dirhams, we thought the food would be worth it but when we got home and started eating the food was horrible because the chicken tikka masala was just diced onion with tomato past and some other thing to give more flavor and it was not cooked well and we got scammed because only one chicken tikka masala was enough for us. Please never ever eat here this place ruined my whole dinner and I hope no one goes there. I decided to eat the buffet since I had gotten excited that my old Indian place was re-opened. I found out no it hadn't and my review went to this place. So I figured let me try this place. The food was okay nothing like the old place very small samosas. The service was AWFUL!!! I'm sorry, but there is no reason for you to put the check down before I even finish eating. India Palace is hands down by far my favorite Indian lunch/brunch buffet in New Haven, even with Tandoor across the street, Royal India up the street, and Zaroka (a bit classier than these three) around the corner. I adore this simple and straightforward place and its ever-changing lunch buffet items that always include some great classics along with new dishes I haven't sampled. In fact, this review is based entirely on my many buffet experiences here- I've never ordered off the menu; it seems unnecessary when the buffet is so good and so reasonable. The place seems pretty dinky at first, and every single time I go I'm the only person there when I walk in, but by the time I leave it's hopping. Recommendations (excuse my spelling): the baigan bharta (eggplant dish) is amazing and my favorite thing here, saag paneer is solid, chicken tikka masala is par for the course, any type of curry they have, anything with lentils, actually pretty much everything. The naan is exactly what I'm looking for with naan- not too heavy, but also not insubstantial or flavorless. Perfectly complements the food, as does the rice. There's a variety of sauces, and I always add the green spicy one and the sweet possibly tamarind one. I recognize that there is a salad bar, but I haven't ever seen anyone get anything from it beyond a few cucumbers. Save room for dessert! The almond rice pudding is SO GOOD with spices and lightness, as are those milk ball dessert things. This place is yum yum yummy! Go for lunch because the buffet is only $9.99, and for a buffet, everything tastes fresh like it was just cooked. The only dish that could be better was the chicken tandoori as it tasted extra dry, and it was really difficult to chew and go down. This is our go to place for Indian food. It's not much to look at but the food is awesome. We've tried a large portion of the menu throughout the 5 or 6 years we've been eating here and we're never disappointed. We have come as a couple as well as large groups and have always had attentive service and quality food. They are also really good about listening to your requests regarding spices. If you want mild, they'll give you mild. Beware if you order HOT though...it's deadly! Lately we've been ordering takeout and they always deliver in a timely manner. My only complaint with the take out is sometimes the apps or the naan will get over cooked or mushy due to the packaging. They tend to steam themselves in the bags they pack them in. So this was my first exposure to Indian food and it was a great one. I was always weirded out by it without actually trying it. My girlfriend always raves about Indian palace but I was always nervous. It's a very casual non fancy Indian restaurant. Since that first time we went here we have consistently gone back. Tried a few other places like thali and just wasn't up to the quality of Indian palace. She always gets Chicken saag and I always get chicken vindaloo. Both of these dishes are amazing. We always get veggie samosas as an appetizers. And the naan....... I think it's safe to say they have the best Naan in town. Every other place I get it it's burnt and just not as tasty. Ordered online so I could pick up dinner on my way home from work. Food was ready when I came 15 minutes before my scheduled pick up time (awesome) and still warm when I got home. I had the lamb curry and gulab jamun - both were delicious. Lamb curry included chunks of tender lamb and gulab jamun was sweet, and the (2) pieces were large. This is a solid Indian buffet, for lunchtime, one of the better places in the city. They often have good variety and different dishes, but always have some of the key favorites, like Chicken Tikka Masala and some kind of Saag. Great samosas and naan, and their curries are often also excellent. Great waitstaff and a pleasant atmosphere. Have had take out for dinner too and it is also very good, perhaps even better than the buffet, as it is clearly made fresh. The flavors in their dishes are bold and fresh, never bland, but they add A LOT of cream to their sauces. We were told it would take 30-60 minutes. At 7:40 I called to confirm the order and was told that the delivery guy was stuck in traffic and would be there in five minutes. At 8:10 I called and got the exact same answer as last time. We were a 4 minute drive from the restaurant. Starved, frustrated and becoming angry we walked across the road and had a meal. Went for the lunch. I'm glad that they had the buffet. To me though, 9.95 for a lunch buffet isn't cheap eats, so my expectations increased a bit. (Note: I'm new to the restaurant scene in New Haven, so I could be wrong.) Anyway, the restaurant was very clean, though visibly worn out. Service was decent. The food was...ok. Good rice and naan bread. The chick peas and goat were wonderfully spicy. The goat was too chewy--got stuck in my teeth! Still, a thumbs up for having goat on the buffet! There were chicken and veggie dishes available. Also, they had dessert, but I didn't really want anything sweet. The pakora were dried out--greasy and hard. This place is only a short walk from work, so I'll probably come back. Ok. So, I went back just two days later. My colleagues wanted to go; I said "sure." Why, oh, why??? Nail in the coffin. Ugh! The goat was even tougher. Felt like a neanderthal picking and sucking meat out of my teeth all afternoon. Disgusting. No more India Palace for me. read more

Wow the best Indian Food !!!!! I order Dal Makhani creamed lentil perfectly seasoned !!!! It was an explosion of real flavor. The rise n Naan mmmm please You have to try them Then I order chicken Mandras in curry sauce n coconut !!!! My favorite Indian restaurant here in New haven.. They was so friendly. This is my favorite Indian restaurant in Connecticut. Their Saag Paneer always blows my mind! It's rich and creamy spinach is stuffed with the perfect amount of cheese cubes. The classic Chicken Tikka Masala was of course delicious. Their selection is fantastic across the board. The service is topnotch. Out of all the times that I have dined here, there was never a time that I wasn't satisfied with the food and service here. The décor here is simple but that really doesn't matter as they will certainly wow you with their food. Lastly, their prices cant be beat for the quality of this restaurant!
