I've been ordering here takeout consistently as my main Indian spot and I gotta say the food is delicious. But the one bad thing is the service is crazy, hanging up on me after I ask one thing no bye no hello no interest at all ( this has happened literally everytime I call which is a lot of times.) but damn that food is good. read more

This is our go to Indian restaurant, we went there once on our way back from the airport, it then turned into our favorite take out place and last night we sat down and ate there. The staff is so friendly, checking in on you and one of our dishes we were afraid to get it too spicy and they brought out a spicy sauce to add heat tot he dish. The food is off the charts, my favorites are the Dahl, korma and goha. They have a great large selection and have some fun local Indian beers and a full cocktail menu. It is a very large space with a water fall and statues inside as well as a back event room space. Very well decorated and attention to detail. Such a fun spot! read more

As soon as we walked in, we knew we were in the right place. Right inside the door is a Ford tractor, probably 1954-57. My father-in-law owned a 1955. That was totally random. But also, it was the right place for dinner. Do be aware that it might be spicier than you expect. I got a saag paneer "medium" and it was pretty spicy, much more than my daughter's medium butter chicken. My husband got a chicken dish that was described as "mild-to-medium" and I tell you that the mild was not in the room with us! The food was great and the staff friendly. read more

The food here is delicious! I'm definitely not a connoisseur when it comes to Indian food as I've only recently tried it, but of the 2 places I've been to, this one far surpasses the other. The food is hot and fresh. Everything is flavorful and well seasoned. I usually get the butter chicken and even though this spot is out of the way for me, it is definitely worth the trip out. I will say though that one time I got medium spicy which is usually perfect for me, and it ended up being waaaay spicier than expected. I'll count that as a one off though. Establishment is always clean and well maintained. Bathrooms are also very clean. Only hassle is the parking, so to keep it simple we just park in the parking garage. We visited India Palace on Super Bowl Sunday, and since it was a quieter evening, we were seated immediately. The staff was very attentive, making our dining experience smooth and enjoyable. For starters, we ordered the pickled vegetables, pakoras, and a salad. The pakoras were large, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the accompanying sauces. The pickled vegetables were also really good. The salad, however, arrived at the end of our meal and felt a bit underwhelming--it could benefit from being either pre-tossed or chopped more finely, as it was mostly lettuce with tomatoes, cucumbers, and a small side of sauce. The highlight of our meal was the chicken tikka masala and fresh bread, both cooked to perfection and packed with flavor. My husband also enjoyed his alcoholic mango lassi, which was a nice addition to the meal. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely return for delicious Indian food. A few small improvements to the salad presentation would enhance the meal, but everything else was spot on! read more

It's a well-decorated restaurant, very close to Sharp Mercy Hospital, with a very diverse menu and pleasant atmosphere. I enjoyed lunch here despite only two other parties being present during a rainy day. The Shrimp Biryani was flavorful and delicious, with lots of saffron rice that balanced the medium spicy shrimp. The raita on the side provided a nice cooling touch. The entree went really well with Rupee beer - a big improvement over the usual Kingfisher and Taj Mahal. Highly recommended. read more

India palace I have liked this place for a long time...We started frequenting the restaurant during COVID and continued going there. Yesterday I went in to order four meals to-go. Some things have changed. The chai was excellent which I ordered while I waited. Everything smelled so good on the way home in the car. When we got home and had the food, the flavors were nice, but a few things were not so good. I will attribute it with costs of a small business trying to stay alive in this economy. Because the differences I noticed were cost related. First of all the baingan bharta should be called baingan peas because it was a sea of green peas. And I do not like peas. It is not even possible to get a bite without peas or to separate them out, it is chock full of peas. I didn't even see any eggplant pieces in there. Peas are way cheaper than eggplant. Secondly the kashmiri naan which hubby and I love - and have been ordering for years was different. We used to go there just for the Kashmir naan. But this time it was nothing special. It was thin with less filling and with more coconut (cheaper) than the last time we ordered it. There were no cherries that I could tell which used to be the main flavor with some nuts. The naan itself was thin. I was craving the good thick pillowy Indian bread stuffed full of deliciousness. But all I could taste was stale naan. I know that French almond croissants are traditionally made by filling the day old croissants with almond paste. And they are delicious. Maybe that's how kashmiri naan is made. But this naan just tasted stale. So I was disappointed. The other disappointment came with the to-go packaging. Everything was tightly wrapped in plastic wrap, however still something leaked through one of the brown paper bags making it tear through. Secondly when I opened the plastic container of the korma it squirted all over me and stained my ivory sweater. So I was already bummed by that experience even before opening the peas bharta. It appears the restaurant had rebranded itself as Indian Punjabi Cuisine and has a new Panjabi teddy bear logo. So I'm thinking that perhaps the ownership has changed hands. I didn't see the older Indian lady owner who is usually there during the lunchtime. Oh, they have the butter chicken on the backside of the menu with three other house specialties and I didn't see it until after I had placed the order -or I would have ordered that instead of the chicken tiki masala for my dad. We haven't had the desserts yet, but I trust they'll be fine. Anyway don't take my word for it. Go check it out for yourself. read more

My friend and I came in for lunch today and were seated at a booth. We ordered our food and thankfully had only been drinking water when we noticed what appeared to be rat droppings on the table. Unfortunately, I was so shocked and disgusted that I didn't think to take a photo. We immediately canceled our food order and left as quickly as possible. A standard Indian restaurant. Had some interesting decor, in my opinion did not have a cohesive theme going on. Service was alright as they forgot one of our dishes, but then brought it out when we asked for it. Appetizers: Onion Bhaji: kind of addictive, but very very salty. Needs the tamarind sauce to tone it down. In my opinion just like a better onion ring. Just needs to reduce the salt since the sauces cover most of the flavoring. Entrees: Tandoori Chicken: Good flavoring and tender. Doesn't stand out from other tandoori chickens I've had but is very solidly good. Lamb Biryani: Lamb was good and tender, no smell, rice seemed different than regular basmati rice, felt way too wet. White yogurt sauce brings the dish together but that's expected. Butter Chicken: Solid flavors, maybe less than other places I've been to. A classic dish for sure. Garlic Naan: was good, maybe a little too crispy for me. Great Indian cuisine in Hillcrest! We ordered the Butter Chicken, Lamb Saag and some Garlic Naan. I've had better Butter Chicken dishes at another Nepalese restaurant in Chula Vista but the Lamb Saag was fantastic. I was also very happy with the Garlic Naan, maybe some of the best I've had in San Diego. Our server was great and made sure that our water glasses were full and kept checking in on us to make sure that we had everything we needed. We sat outside on a perfect sunny San Diego day and enjoyed the outdoor seating. So everything from the food taste to the outdoor experience made this visit an excellent choice and I would recommend to anyone who also enjoys good Indian food. read more

I've had some bites here before, but this was my first time having a full meal. We just decided to do a girls' night and I was first to arrive. It was pretty empty and I didn't even know who else was supposed to be here, so I just waited outside LOL. I noticed that they have a painting of Drake on the wall, which doesn't seem to match the waterfall entrance/decor. After everyone arrived, we were seated and browsed through the menu. We decided to just order a bunch of items and share everything. I had to have my mango lassi, which was thick and very refreshing. For food, we got the chicken tikka masala, 2 garlic naan, mango chutney, papadum, shrimp vindaloo, roti, lamb goat curry, butter chicken, and chicken hariyali. Everything came out pretty quickly in these small bowls, but they were surprisingly filling! The papadum was very interesting- they were crunchy lentil crackers that came with two dipping sauces. I'm so disappointed. I've been eating at India Palace for more than 15 years. Tonight when I ate my usual order, paneer Tika masala, veggie korma, alou Gobi, reshmi chicken and garlic cheese naan, every dish tasted like every other dish, like bland buffet food, but the price was the same as always, very costly. I didn't mind before because it was the best Indian in San Diego, imo. I called the restaurant and learned they changed chefs 6 months ago. I will never eat there again. Wow, what a spectacularly cool Indian restaurant! We're big fans of the cuisine and have been in many Indian restaurants over the years, but this is by far the neatest interior I've ever seen. Really unique and fun decor, awesome water feature, and romantic lighting all around. We had the chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, chicken korma, and both the garlic naan and garlic cheese naan, with rice and mango lassis. All very good! The mild spice level on the korma was perfect for me, even has a tiny bit of heat to it still at that lowest spice level. The chicken is all white meat, and I like how the pieces are smaller than the big chunks of chicken you typically see in Indian dishes. The service was also excellent. We were the only seated customers for half of the time we were there; they had lots of takeout orders though. Some people trickled in as we were eating so it got a little busier around 8/8:30. I'd love to come back here when we're in town again! read more

A tough day! GPS wanted us to drive through the hospital on a road than no longer existed. Lots of traffic. So we decided to stop and eat a late lunch. Someone pulled out of a parking space directly in front of us! Perfect. And that was the kind of "it-all-fit" experience we had. The food was exceptionally good. Tried green peas and mushrooms and enjoyed. Naan with cheese and garlic was yummy. We also had chicken strips that were fully of chicken, not breading! All the food was tasty and lovely. A quiet relaxing atmosphere allowed us to enjoy our food and get rid of the stress of traffic. Good value with moderate pricing. Quick service with pleasant servers. Returning for the second time, I started with fish pakora and chicken 65. While the chicken 65 was amazing, the fish pakora lacked fish and was mainly breading. However, the mains--chicken kebab, lamb kebab, saag, chicken curry, biryani, and garlic naan--were all outstanding. The ambiance with Kobe artwork was lovely, and the waiter was very sweet. I came here with my dad who can't eat spicy foods. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Saag Paneer with no spice and it was DELICIOUS! Not at all spicy, but still tasty! Meanwhile, I was able to increase the heat with their sauce trio. In my humble opinion, the saag paneer needed a little salt, but it's easier to remedy that than too much salt! The plain naan is like heaven on earth and the earthy flavor of the white rice is amazing too. The chai tea is top notch as well - warm and inviting. Got there before they closed, so no wait. This is one of the best places in the area for Indian food. Between the two of us, we got three dishes, and had plenty of leftovers. Plenty of food, and it was quite tasty. The venue is pretty big with a ton of tables. The staff is fastidious and courteous. A return visit is definitely in the works. read more
