I forgot that I had visited India Sweets & Groceries until I saw Alana's recent pics & found my review draft. I discovered this mom & pop when I was picking up lunch takeout in the same strip mall; they're noted for their Indian deli food takeout (there's a few table & chairs if you prefer to dine-in, & kinda cramped) & groceries, & they have cheap, huge samosas! I would detour here to either supplement my lunch or add a mid-afternoon snack. I mostly order samosas... & they are large, flaky shells stuffed with spiced potatoes, peas, onions. They're flavorful & seasoned well, but not always fried properly; sometimes they're greasy because the shell absorbs too much oil (low oil temp, overcrowded pan, improper drainage?) or they're a bit burnt. They come with a tamarind (red) & cilantro (green) dipping chutney; the tamarind is packed with tangy, sweet flavor with a slap of spiciness, while the cilantro is herbaceously savory & vibrant with a slight spicy kick. I usually eat the samosas on its own, & save the chutneys to use on the pakoras because sometimes they're on the bland side. And the pakoras also has similar issues of being too oily. The Aloo & Gobi Parathas are huge & nicely stuffed with spiced mashed potatoes (aloo) & spiced grated cauliflower (gobi). The comforting flatbreads are flavorful & filling... sometimes I'll bundle both into an aloo gobi paratha because I love aloo gobi stir-fry (it's my one of fav Indian dishes & I almost always order it). Since I'm dropping in around lunch, there's usually a line but it moves fairly quick & the foods in the steam tables are fresh due to constant turnover. Sometimes, they do run out of samosas & the wait hasn't exceeded 10-mins. Food prices range from cheap to moderate. Service is more about speed than friendliness, which is fine by me... This is authentic, homemade Indian food and I can taste it! They offer a large selection of dishes they make from scratch when ordered, but the most popular vegetable dishes (Saag Paneer, Dal, Aloo Gobi, etc.) are already made, a faster option than waiting for my order fresh! These dishes are a little spicier than when I order fresh, which I expect from experience with family meals I've had in the past, but not too spicy. And I'm unusually wimpy about spicy food! I'm ashamed to say that I started writing a review of this place way back in 2017 (7 years ago!)...and I'd already been coming here for a couple of years even at that time. In L.A., there are a ton of these 'India Sweets and Spices' or 'New India Sweets and Spices' joints around but this one is "India Sweets & GROCERIES'. I have no clue if they're all related, well, of course they are because they all seem to sell goods as well as prepared food so in that way, they're related. And the prepared food here is fantastic! A very good childhood friend of mine had been keeping this joint a secret until he brought a big 'ol box of Samosas (not the Girl Scout cookie kind) to a party we held many years back. At that time, I believe, the Samosas were $0.75/each.....which was incredible! These massive fried potato and veggie 'wonton' grenades are H-U-G-E, super flavorful and at $0.75/each at that time, a steal. Unfortunately, inflation has even crept into the no-frills 'India Sweets & Groceries' and so they've doubled in price to $1.50/each which still isn't bad. With every Samosa, they give you two delicious chutneys, a green mint one and a tamarind (sweet) one. The chutneys are great too. These are fantastic to bring to parties; everyone loves them. There's a huge selection of ONLY VEGETARIAN curries as well as baked goods and it's a little intimidating trying to figure out what everything is and if we'd like them. The only downside here, for me, is that there are no meat offerings but then I peaked at the menu over at 'All Indian Sweets and Snacks' just north up Hawthorne and their chicken and lamb/goat dishes are $15 and $17, respectively, which I feel is comparable to ordering these at a restaurant. Since it's not one, I wouldn't expect having to pay those prices. I don't know, that's just me. Now, I've never eaten at 'All Indian Sweets and Snacks' but I want a good deal and 'India Sweets and Groceries' offers just that. The staff is always very helpful and even offered me a couple of samples of the curries on this last visit last week because I didn't know what to get (and honestly, I had a hard time understanding what one of the ladies was telling me). You're able to order different sizes which I think is great so I ordered 3 different curries as well as the Saag Paneer (I know what that one is) all in the small size and they went a long way along with the other things I ordered. I actually have a little left of 2 curries almost a week later. The curries are super flavorful, exotic, a little bit spicy and definitely more gourmet or at least different I'd say than your every day Indian buffet. If you're looking for plain and mild Indian buffet flavors, you might not like the curries here. But if you're looking to expand your palette horizon, I think you'll be pleased with the flavors; there's a lot going on in each bite. And actually, I didn't really miss not having my favorites Chicken Tikka Masala or Lamb Vindaloo too much. And even if you're not a fan, you can drown everything with the provided sauces/chutneys and those are yummy so really, it's a win-win. In addition to the usual green mint and tamarind chutneys, we were also given a different green sauce, an orange sauce and a yogurt sauce which was kind of like raita. In addition to the various small size curries (4) I ordered last week (the names of which I have no clue and I doubt I'll ever be able to remember them), I ordered Samosas (4), some Pakora (fried veggie fritters), a Dosa Masala (a Southern Indian 'burrito') and garlic paratha (kind of like Naan but not exactly and I don't know what the difference is frankly). It is a fried lentil ball, cut up and smothered in whipped yogurt, topped with chutneys and onions. It was a little sweet and a lotta very good! I also ordered 4 baked goodies...gulab jamon (fried doughy balls in syrup which are my son's favorite Indian dish), jalebi (which I recognize after having them at Moroccan restaurants; they're the lacey, bright orange, crunchy thingies) and a couple burfi (first time trying them; they're interestingly tasty). The gulab jamon were yummy, just like those I've had at Indian buffets and the jalebi was very good and just like I remembered. Parking is plentiful in the little stripmall parking lot and you can dine in at the handful of tables inside. This is a small, family owned grocery store that also has a vegetarian deli where you can order combo meals and also grab an assortment of sweets/desserts. I ordered the masala dosa, saag paneer and samosas to go. The masala dosa, which comes with a side of sambar (lentil stew) would have likely been better eaten there but it was still tasty and satisfying. I personally prefer stronger flavors/spices when it comes to Indian food but everything was still delicious and well-balanced. read more

I was pleased to find this local Indian grocer and market. I had a specific mandate from my doctor to incorporate more fiber into my diet, and he suggested a specific species of Indian psyllium husk for the results I was looking for. The ladies behind the counter and even a couple of regular shoppers were more than glad to direct me to exactly what I came in for and even shared some helpful tips for using it safely and effectively! This is a small but well-stocked (to the gills!) and well-appointed market. It even has a hot food bar (gonna take advantage of *that* sometime!) with a couple of tables. Hot Cuisine: Ordered some items to go, but they do have a seating area. Instead of ordering combo meals, I ordered pints - which would be similar as if I ordered at a restaurant, but way more affordable. Similar to my grocery notes below, it's probably easier if you already know which dishes you want to have (reminder that it's all vegetarian - Indian Veg Cuisine). The service is very friendly, but language can be a barrier - smiles, patience, and an adventurous spirit go a long way. Aloo Gobi - large pieces of cauliflower and potatoes. Well cooked veggies. I really enjoyed it, but then it seemed to get salty. Not sure if I would get such a large container again. Aloo Baingan - large pieces of eggplant and potatoes that were very well cooked and tender . I really enjoyed this - I'm more used to baingan bharta - so having it with the potato was a nice change. I loved the slightly sweet flavor. Since they specialize in vegetable cuisine, I was very pleased that both of these dishes has properly cooked veg. Samosa - very large filled with potato and peas. Kinda plain but satisfying. Pakora - too much batter to veg ratio. Taste was fine, but I prefer veggie fritters and not batter fritters. They did reheat very well in a toaster oven. Grocery: The shop has quite a wide variety of items, but I do recommend that you know what you are shopping for. Many items don't have English (or American English) translations, and not everything is marked with a price. I went for some specific items included a canned mango puree (kesar mango is my preference), some nan khatai cookies (kinda like shortbread), and some fine semolina, and then also picked up some snacks. April Food Explorer club wanted to learn about Indian food and culture. So we headed to India Sweets & Groceries. Our group of four loved it. This was the first time for some of them to try Indian food. This is a simple Indian grocery store and we enjoyed looking at the foods available to take home and cook with. Snacks looked great! There are a few tables between the buffet and the grocery aisles. The People serving our food were helpful and supportive as we asked lots of questions. They explained things to us. The customers were also kind and helpful and shared their suggestions for what to order. Some of our favorites were the rice, samosas, Dahi Vada and Palak Paneer. You can not beat the price. We had more then enough food for four people and it was $30.00. This place is not fancy but great for great food and family friendly. We will all return on own and look forward to sharing this treat with our friends. read more

Their hot foot is cafeteria style with tables and chairs which were unfortunately not there due to Covid. So I ate my samosas in my car before finishing the rest of my Torrance shopping excursion. The aisles are very narrow with boxes of food in the way as they were stocking the shelves. In several places with no regard for their shoppers. The grocery prices are much higher than Cash and Carry Grocery on Pioneer Blvd in Little India. The most annoying thing about the grocery section is the lack of prices on too many of the items on the shelves. I had to ask for prices about all too many items. I have been coming here for a few decades and I am a fan of their cooked vegetarian food. No meat here either cooked or uncooked in the grocery section. Don't expect a huge fresh produce section. Located in a strip mall next to an Arco gas station, there is a small parking lot. Just down the street is a mall with Walmart. The Del Amo Mall is really close. read more

It gets a little messy when you try to fill it with tamarind water, but it's totally worth the mess. They make a decent Masala Dosa as well, though All Indian down the street is better. Food is good, decent portions for price. Definitely more like a traditional home cooked Indian meal, rather than commercialized versions, which I'd prefer any day. Sometimes difficult to order exactly what you want because of communication. I think this is only an issue when it's busier because you can feel a little rushed. I've driven past here countless times and never really considered going inside until a few months ago. But wow, have I been missing out! Tucked away in a little plaza is this little gem: an Indian grocery store with a cooked food section towards the back. I was drawn here because I was curious about their dosas. I had always wanted to try one. When I came in for the first time, I wasn't really sure where to begin. *(I noticed there weren't any signs indicating what each dish was or what was in them. I think that would be a really helpful addition for customers. It's hard to know if you'll like something if you don't know what it is! Haha) I asked the lady at the counter what the difference was between their plain dosa and their masala dosa. She was really sweet. She could tell I had no idea what anything was and took the time to describe the dosas to me, as well as the dishes they had for the day. The masala dosa is filled with potatoes and other spices. I opted for the plain dosa. It comes with a soup/sauce to dip it in. (I still don't know what it's called, but I will!) The dosas are cooked fresh when you order and it takes some time to make. On one of my visits, it took around 20 minutes because they said I was the first order and their cooktop needed a while to warm up. The dosa comes out super crispy but also tender on the inside. So yummy! Their samosas are great. They're massive! My husband really enjoys them. So when I get a dosa, he gets samosas! I also like to grab some of the Indian snack mixes when I'm there. I enjoy coming here and enjoy the food. I do, however, feel like the food lacks 'something'. I am by no means an expert in Indian cuisine but I have been to other places that I enjoy more. The staff is very nice to me and that is great. The hot entrees have a decent amount of spices and flavor but I think they may be tailoring their food to the area. I asked for hot sauce or something else, maybe chili powder, to kick the flavor up a notch. I was given 2 condiments which definitely added something to the food but the heat factor was lacking. I ordered a HUGE 2 item lunch plate and in total I only paid $8 (I added it to my meal for $1, yes I still paid only $8!) I think the pakora's are very salty. The samosa was delicious! I do not know the names of the entrees but I don't care. I always get something with potatoes and the second item is a total mystery to me. This time I chose something squash. The market portion of the location is very busy. They have a ton of products I am not accustomed to seeing but I think that's amazing. As you can see in my picture, they have ALL the rice! Update: July 29, 2021. My wife bought 10 samosas, 2lb Pakorey and Gulab jamuns which we took to our friend place so we could enjoy lunch together. Worst experience ever see details below: It was the most embarrassing when my friend served us the food which we brought from this shop. 1) gulab jamuns tasted like uncooked flour and had disgusting taste that none of us was able to swallow even one bite. All had to be trashed. 2) pakora were very dark looked like reheated in oil and didn't taste good either. Might be stale from last night left overs reheated and served to us. We trashed the pakoras. 3) samosa were not good either but still edible that we ate half of it. On scale of 1 to 10 I would rate 3 with 10 being max. Bland samosa with almost no crunchy crust. This was extremely bad experience and it does not stop here. I called the restaurant and shared my experience the owner replied that she just tasted one and gulab jamun aren't that bad and exact wording " eeny burey v nahi" see what a pity, owner is saying these aren't that bad it means they are bad 100% They are in self denial and when I asked for refund she said no sorry. Come to our shop we can have a talk. I replied $50 wasted and this is the last time me and friends in Torrance will give them business. Their attitude was like we don't care, Indian customers do have options in Torrance so they will eventually only come here. But word of mouth and what you serve speaks for itself and on top of it extremely poor customer service and self denial owner. Hopefully no other customer have to go through this experience. All my friends and family in Torrance will share this experience even though it is neighborhood shop we are not ever going here again. Not only do they have a stixkes grocery store they have an extensive menu of foods to either dine in or take out. The yogurt vada is amazing! It was so good, I ordered a second one to take home haha. I've never had one like that, dressed up to the nines! They layer it with so much yumminess. Sweet sauce, another type of sauce, crunchy stuff, I don't even know what else but loved it. 5 stars for the jalebi. Fresh, crispy, and sweet, all for $4.49 a pound. Besides that their pista/pistachio barfi was good and fresh. Avoid anything else. The carrot halwa was very low quality, big chunks, not much thought or detail put into it. It really seemed mass produced. The cashew/almond bars were less than desired too. Not much flavor. And I didn't realize how big they make the bars. Probably to add weight since it's $8.49 a pound. If you need an Indian dessert fix like I usually do, this place will do. Especially the jalebi. Start with Indian Sweets - a little grocery store/food joint located in a little strip mall in Torrance. I did. At the suggestion of Alex C, we decided to give this place a try one afternoon. Once inside, I found myself surrounded by packed shelves filled with Indian spices and vegetables.The food counter and a few tables were located in the back of the store. We ordered a smattering of dishes to try. All the dishes were between $2-$5 and were all very tasty. Alex C. is fairly versed in Indian cuisine but the lady behind the counter and some of the customers were also very helpful ( and friendly). We started off with: Seu Puri Masala Dosa Idli samber Aloo Paghra Then half way through we noticed they also had Chana Bathura, one of my favorite dishes. Of course the meal would not be complete without a taste of this delicious bread. In fact, all the dishes were very tasty and at such a good cost point and good service, how can you not give them a try. Next time? This is the best Indian grocery store in the South Bay, by far. We've been coming here a lot lately, and really get a kick out of the somewhat healthier veg Indian food from the back of the store. It's served cafeteria-style by some really nice women who seem to take pride in what they are doing -- as opposed to places like All Indian Sweets and Snacks, where the dude is often pissed off. They have a few items made to order, like dosa, but otherwise items are served cafeteria style. Highly recommend the: * pakora (like tempura but with garam masala/salt sprinkled on top), * samosa channa (where the samosa is used as a bowl basically to put chickpea curry on top), * the sambar (a soup which is supposed to be a side for things like dosa, but I think is standalone good here), * dal makhani (lentils that are "restaurant quality" is what my wife said -- at 1/8th the cost) The assorted curries and subjis vary day to day and are all worth trying. Really appreciate that the store is quite big, clean, and well lit. Prices are super reasonable. Oh, I almost forgot the sweets! Make sure to get a few every visit! The besan ladoo are amazing, clearly very very fresh as they crumble when touched. Some of the best available in America. Final note: this place compares very, very favorably with most joints in Silicon Valley (where Sunnyvale and Fremont have some of the largest desi communities in the country). I also read them after I had already been here a couple times and while I might be more cautious during my next visit, I can't deny the fact that I had good experiences here. I've been to this cash n carry type deli for over a year now because of my bf and his family. They've got me hooked on their masala dosa with aloo (potatoes) and samosas (My two favorite items from them) They have a vegetable baji and Channa masala as other vegan options, and plenty of veggie options to choose from. They are slowing creeping up their prices yet their quality is diminishing a bit so that's a bummer, but overall, still an above average place. read more

This place is legit. I've only come in for Samosa chana, Pakoras, and thier gajar ka halwa. I love how they also sell East Asian groceries. Besides groceries, they also have nick nacks such as: paintings, candle holders, incense, and prayer beads. This is the place go for samosas! I'm pretty active with my college alumni group and one of the girls there always brings gigantic samosas to our meetings. They're always a hit and so I just had to ask here where she got them. It turns out they're from India Sweets and Groceries; a place that I've had on my bookmark for a longtime. One lovely weekend; I decided to finally check this place out; 1.) to get samosas and 2.) to get some lunch ;). I came rather early and lunch wasn't ready yet at their counter and so I checked out the grocery for a little bit. They've got various Indian snacks and food and saw some of my favorites. The one thing I did notice is that there are no prices anywhere for the items they're selling (hmm I guess you need to go check out first to see?). After some quick browsing, I made my way to the lunch area where a line was slowly forming. Similar to the grocery items; there weren't many labels on the food offerings but the folks working there were kind to answer any questions. I soon chose to get a combo with saag paneer (spinach), aloo gobi (cauliflower) and pakoras. I of course got some samosas to go. I also opted to get a mango lassi and a kala kand (pistachio bar) for dessert. The combo also came with some crispy bread (not typical naan). Overall the lunch combo wasn't bad. The crispy bread and pakora was a little bit on the salty side. The main entrees themselves were ok. Definitely the best part was the samosas! The samosas are big, fulfilling and well worth the price. Now that I know this is the place for samosas; I will definitely be visiting more often. read more

My family has been coming here for nearly three decades. The owners are very nice people who remember regulars. As a kid, they always gave me free deserts. Only vegetarian Indian food here. Be sure to get the 6 or 12-pack of large samosas, oversized puri with Chana (#1?) and get a large side of rice. That's my go-to item - I never get sick of it, after decades! Come back again and try the massive dosa with orange and green chutneys. Amazing! Almost 20 years ago, when I was a little kid, the owners' sons used to watch my brother and I at their house, while our parents were on vacation. They're very down to earth people, and as a small business, we must support them through these difficult times. They bought out "Filmistan" (blockbuster for Indian movies), the next door business, like a decade ago, and renovated to double the space of their restaurant. It is very spacious and they have a large assortment of Indian groceries. Yes, it is slightly more expensive than Little India, but it is also 20 miles closer to us, so we don't mind spending extra. How fortunate am I to have a plethora of International markets close by! How the Samosa made it home without being gobbled down is nothing close to a miracle. I LOVE this market for affordable spices, dalia, rice, and various flours. Sometimes I may pop in for lunch or dinner take out en route home. They also have a wide variety of British goods from PG Tips to Milo. read more
