Tiny but mighty. Very well organized and stock Japanese market. We always stop by to peruse after getting dim sum next door at Lunasia. Did not realize I've never left a review. It is well organized, with prepared foods towards the front of the store by the entrance in refrigerated displays. some good sushi selection and rice balls. This was an unexpected find! I've always seen this market in visits to Rolling Hills Mall in Torrance. Did stop there until I was on a Japanese rice lager search today. I found the beer at a great restaurant in West Oakland and wanted to get some more down in LA. The bigger stores couldn't help me, but the manager on Saturday duty said he'd ask for some to arrive in a week. I will be looking to if his service promise is met. This is such a cute little market!! When you first walk in, the have a selection of prepared foods. I've tried many of them and found they're all good. The mackerel especially was great, and I didn't know I liked mackerel! I always come here for the best rice, it's hard to find the brand I like elsewhere. They also have a good selection of raw meat and fish, in sizes that are perfect for a reasonable meal. The frozen section is small but well stocked. Produce section has good-looking produce. They recently rearranged some things and now have an endcap of different soup bases. On the back there are suggested add-ins. It's really fun to pick a base, grab the add-ins, and make an easy soup! read more

I've been here a couple of times and enjoy looking at the sweets and snacks. I enjoyed a delicious Yuzu sparkling drink from here as well. The store is well kept and the produce seem fresh. I come here for shabu shabu meat to use in my pho too. The bad: I tried to find wooden Japanese sushi rolling mats but they only have the plastic kind. Out of 4 - 5 Japanese markets in Torrance, this Rolling Hills location is probably the smallest and the worst one out of them all. It is one thing to have a small market, but their grab-and-go sushi selection is smaller than other Japanese market's. Most importantly they don't offer post 7 PM discount on their leftover grab-and-go sushi & bento boxes whereas Tokyo Central in Torrance offers 20% discount and Mitsuwa offers 50% discount close to 7 PM. Unless I am super desperate, then I will most likely not visit this location again and it is pale in comparison with Nijiya Market on 182nd St (closer to Gardena/Torrance). read more

I had an hour to kill before my movie start time. I didn't feel like having popcorn or soda or any theater grub during the run, so I decided to have some kinda meal before heading in. There were plenty of eateries to choose from. But I had the issue of being in the plaza way too early: most places weren't open until AFTER my movie starts (I caught a matinee) and the only one that really caught my eye is Nijiya. I know it's a market, but I also know they have ready to eat grub. (I learned this from checking out their market located on 182nd.) An hour was plenty of time, so I took my time looking through their goodies. (They have a lot!) I ended up choosing the katsu don (pork cutlet bowl) along with a bottled iced tea. (NOTE: They do have a microwave to warm up your food should you choose to.) I also found one of my favorite shrimp chips, so that was cool! $9 and change and I was outta there. So, the bowl wasn't the best, but it's decent for the price. It also somehow hit the spot for me, squashing the need of any treats from the theater (that everyone knows would cost an arm and a leg.) Besides, I figure if I had the urge, I still had the bag of chips to munch on during the film run. Although it's smaller than its sister store on 182nd, it's a pretty organized store. Lots of fresh veggies and fruits. They also had quite a variety of rice. Probably won't shop here anytime soon, but should I find myself on this same exact situation again, I'd most likely stop by and try some other goodies. read more

The staff there is eager to help you find items, even those hard to find items that you don't know the name of. Be aware since it's a small market, it doesn't get quite cold in there during the winter time, but it is very cool and comfortable during the summer. Super cute Japanese market with a large selection of pre-made meals in the refrigerator aisle. The sushi was very well priced! The simpler rolls such as salmon avocado was priced around 5 dollars which I think is a steal! I just wanted a small snack so I got the spamusubi priced at 2.29. The staff at the register was extremely friendly with a large smile on her face. They have a microwave at the front of the market you can use to heat up your food. I was too lazy to heat my food up so the rice and spam of the spamusubi was on the harder side. I'm sure it would have tasted better if I had heated it. The market also has weekend sales and the deals are posted on a small stand in front of the entrance to the market. read more

Price is expensive - especially Torrance has so many big Japanese markets. You don't need the membership card like "Marukai". Plenty of parking. Fish: The selection was a little more interesting than others. Fresh produce: Expensive than "Sprouts" but they have Japanese vegetables... Sweets: Not a lot but some. Tea: They carry all kinds. They even have various "matcha" (green tea). Rice: Various. Seasonings: Not a lot but some. To-go food: They have quite a lot. Japanese products: Not a lot but some: shampoo, medicine, stationaries, cosmetics etc. Sale: Small yet having the section. - Gluttony Expedition - Koshihikari echigo beer: Light and mild. Too light. Meh. Asahi amber lager: A bit hoppy and very light. Meh. - Conqueror's Deduction - Now I start enjoying craft beers, so I'm not fond of Japanese beers anymore. Japanese beers lack in body in general unlike Belgium and German ones. Japanese can make amazing sake and whisky, but not so much of beer I think. Stopped in here because Whole Foods nor TJ's had chinese hot mustard. Think of this place as a asian market convenience store. Its small but effective. The prices were very good. A bag of mung bean sprouts was .99. At the other stores mentioned it was 2.99 and up. The generous jar of mustard powder was 1.99. The produce looked ok, although I passed. I didn't check out the meat department but what I did notice that the shelves were very sparse, not sure if that's because they don't keep much on hand or because its Monday night after a busy weekend. It certainly isn't stocked chock full like the other markets. The employees were helpful and nice directing me to where things were. I will shop here again . read more

It's quite small compared to all Nijiya, but it's the one I frequent the most. It is actually the only Asian market on this side of Torrance. Selection is a little bit limited since it is smaller, especially with the made bentos, sushi, and bowls. However, quality's good, especially with the meats and seafood. All the usual's here if you want to make Japanese food, but it is a bit more expensive than any other Asian markets. It's a good option if I don't want to go to 99Ranch or Market World. read more

I've been to the Nijiya Market in Santa Monica before (on Sawtelle) and the storefront is relatively small. This store is just as small (although perhaps wider aisles). Since I was having lunch in the plaza already, I wandered over to this market as I saw it from the window of the restaurant I was in! haha I was only interested in picking up some fresh salmon roe and fresh uni (usually sold in packets wrapped w/ saran wrap). Their salmon roe was only $7! So cheap - but I didn't end up buying any. :( It's because I ordered salmon roe as part of my lunch, so didn't have the urge to buy it separately to take home. The store also sold 5 pieces of sushi = Salmon roe sushi (3 pcs) & uni sushi (2 pcs) for only $7.99. The salmon roe sushi was fresh; however, the uni was not as fresh as the kind you get at an omakase. :( Sad! We also bought some fried Fish cake (it was stuffed w/ a piece of calamari) for $1.99. I used the fish cake in the hot pot I made at home yesterday night. haha :) Too bad they didn't have any 'packaged uni sashimi' for sale, because I would have bought a packet to take home! Clean and convenient however that only accept California IDs. Huh??? So only California residents can patronize this market? I presented my Nevada ID and a manager was called for review. Then she asked if I had a passport? When questioned why she us asking me for another form of ID, she just stated it was store policy. I will also mentioned there was no scanner or machine she ran my ID through, so what is the point if not that? What kind of policy is that? If ownership is reading this, I suggest you review this"policy" and instead if living in the past train your staff or even have a handbook on all government issued IDs so you dont ask for a "California" ID. read more
