Olathe and Overland Park are lucky to have this trail head and this trail system. My running club meets here every so often and we can either run to mid American Nazarene university which is about 2 1/2 miles away or go in the opposite direction and run for miles and miles. Unfortunately there is no water here but there is a trashcan and a porta-potty. so if you're in the area be sure to stop by and use this wonderful trail for running biking rollerblading walking. it's great for everything. read more

Gotta love the Indian Creek Trail system winding through the woods of Johnson County. Safe, scenic and relaxing, the investment they put into these trails has definitely paid off. I think the real value here is for walkers and runners, and I'd recommend road cyclists (myself included) stick to the roads and not these narrow trails with blind curves. It can be tough to navigate a bike at 15-20 mph on these trails. I love getting a run in over here, dropping in at either Roe Park or Leawood Park. Near Leawood specifically, there's a somewhat new stretch for mountain bikers with a short stretch of dirt trails that I really like to hike. As a nature lover, I'd love to see networks of trails like these all over the city. read more

This place is fun. Nature trails, a creek, trees, play yard with fairly new equipment for kids to play on and adults as well. Places to picnic and tennis courts. There are also a men's and women's restroom for those in need. There is a Pokémon Go gym and a Pokémon Stop if you are into that sort of thing. The only wish I have is for it to be larger with more trees. It can be walked in 20 minutes. read more

One of my favorite trails to walk the dog on. Very convenient location. Saturday's can be very busy as well as weekday afternoons if the weather is nice. The path is nicely paced and is pretty wide in most spots. Lots of shaded sections as well. I often times see deer around dusk in the winter. A local treasure. Having lived and cycled in Chicago and Los Angeles, I have to say, we're flippin' spoiled here. Sure, Chicago has its phenomenal Lakeshore Trail, and Los Angeles has the beachfront trail along Venice and Santa Monica, but we here in Kansas City have a massive 15-mile (and growing) thing of beauty along Indian Creek. Given the choice between all three, I'd never hesitate: I'd choose Indian Creek every time. Originally started by the City of Overland Park, the Indian Creek trail was nothing but a tiny loop around Roe Park. Over time, the circuit expanded further south and west, and then further north and east. Currently, the blacktop tendrils snake all the way from 160th & Mur-Len in Olathe to 99th and Holmes in Kansas City, MO. And if that's not enough for you, there are plans on the books to expand the trail further east, eventually linking up with Brookside's Trolley Track trail. I usually enter the trail near the 103rd & Metcalf segment, cycling down to 127th & Black Bob and back (about 15 miles roundtrip). The trail follows the creek faithfully for most of the leg, but diverges slightly once you get to Olathe. So, why do I choose this trail over the ones in LA and Chi? Unlike those paths, which are usually clogged with pedestrians and cyclists alike, the Indian Creek trail is usually pretty empty. Hence, its actually bikable. Sure, there are definitely peak hours (late afternoon and just after dinner) and days (weekends, natch), but usually pretty sparsely occupied. Couple that with the fact that it snakes through some pretty gorgeous scenery, and you can usually spot local wildlife like deer and great blue heron walking about. Cool stuff! Just be sure to use the informal rules of the trail: slow down when speeding around curves or cresting hills, don't turn up your iPod too loud, and always call out "On your left!" when passing. Absolutely awesome these trails are. They provide a huge variety of scenery and are very long. The pathways are wide enough for both walkers/runners and cyclists. The trail is also extremely reasonable in regards to hills and bends. Also one thing you will appreciate is that all of the trails for the most part have bridge underpasses, so you can avoid automobile traffic and have a safer ride. I regularly enter the trail on the terminus @ 127th and Blackbob and bike all the way near 103rd & Metcalf. The only thing I would advise is to be watchful of deer on various parts of the trail. I once saw a weirdo on a bike wipeout because he was going to fast. At the time I thought it was comical since he didn't get hurt, but then realized I was the weirdo. The pavement was wet and since it is black tar, anytime it rains you better be very careful about riding on this trail. Especially during the summer and since there is a lot of shaded areas some spots get really slick, so be careful on the trail. If you are a bike rider then be sure to give advanced warning to joggers. I know some of the nearby schools use the trail for jogging so you always want to yell out, "on your right". Everyone on the trail knows what to do and it make it easier to get around them. For the most part the trail is clean but you occasionally see trash lying around. I have heard, but have never seen any crazies running around flashing people so always be on the lookout for those idiots. Sometime I go early morning and there are tons of deer running around. They can easily ge startled so make sure you don't creep up behind them so you dint end up on America's funniest home videos talking about how you got whooped by some psycho deer. Overall, a great place to come and enjoy nature. read more

I usually only go here to watch tennis. The courts are nice. It butts right up against a major street, which can make for some noise in heavy-traffic times. But this is a pretty nice park. The trails for running or bicycling are scenic and cleaned up for this part of Metcalf. A lot of people use this trail, so it has a safe feeling to it. And even at night, everything is fairly well lit. It's pet-friendly, although you'll want to bring your own bag for poop-scooping. I didn't see any the last time I was there. read more

As far as paved trails are concerned in Kansas City this is one of the best, but hey is that really saying much when you're accustomed to the winding dirt paths unkept marvelously all around Columbia MO? No it is not. That is why I can only give this trail system 3 stars even though other than the unpaved hidden mountain bike trails at swope park it is my most traveled, it must be mentioned I do not mountain bike. We enjoy visiting here about once a week, there are multiple access points that have reasonable parking in nearby strip malls or neighborhood streets and there is one small parking lot near 89th and Holmes. All in all if you are looking for a scenic walking spot this may not be the best spot but if you are just looking for some good old fashioned exercise in the land of strip malls and drive through culture this is a pretty solid bet. read more

Not bad for an urban walking trail, but far from idyllic or from being truly beautiful. Lots of highway and trash along sections.

Many people around KC know about the trail...but not so many actually use the trail. This will work out to your advantage. It's a good place to bike and a good place to run, which is what I usually do. You usually end up going under the main roads which means you can keep your pace, safety and sanity without having to slow down and stop like other runs/rides you will take around the area. The path slowly curves through neighborhoods, trees, and of course along the Indian Creek. If you don't live right along the trail, there are also some good entrance points with plenty of parking - some parks, and some dedicated lots for the trail, such as on Black Bob near 127th. The only negative - some parts of the trail can get monotonous. The area south of that 127th/Black Bob entrance is one of those - I'll go running and the scenery just gets kind of boring. It's nice scenery, don't get me wrong, but I like changing scenery to keep me going on my run, and that stretch just doesn't do it for me. If you are a runner, do indeed watch out for the bikers - it's your responsibility to do so, in my opinion. Also, a previous review mentioned the trail getting slick when wet. That's true, so be careful! read more

A local gem discovered! I enjoy bicycle riding to discover and explore new places. In combination with several other bicycle trails in the Kansas City metropolitan are, the Indian Creek Trail is ideal for this purpose. The Indian Creek Trail is heavily wooded in many sections and parallels Indian Creek. At times, It traverses over Indian Creek (sturdy wooden bridges), affording the sounds of rushing waters of the creek below. When you think of the "Indian Creek Trail," do not think of dirt.. The trail is well maintained and generally is an 8-10 foot wide asphalt trail. The trail is also patrolled during summer by the Police Department. Well-maintained city parks are situated along the trail with drinking fountains so that one may refill water bottles. Also numerous commercial places are available off trail to eat. The trail is usually flat with mile markers every half mile extending over its nearly 17 mile route and incorporates bridge underpasses, avoiding all automobile traffic. There are a few steep grades for short sections and tight turns, particularly where the trail approaches streets or bridges, all offering a very interesting bicycle ride. While on the trail, I see other bicyclists, joggers, and walkers. I also see numerous birds, and at times, turtles, rabbits, and deer. Whereas many other trails are overused, one feels like they have their own piece of the Indian Creek Trail because of its length and limited usage. If one desires to feel solitude, ride the trail off peak hours (such as late afternoon) and avoid the weekends. The Indian Creek Trail passes through four metro cities: Leawood, Overland Park, Olathe, KS and Kansas City, MO. It also connects with the Tomahawk Creek Trail, extending the overall possible riding distance. For those who cannot bicycle to the Indian Creek Trail (I ride from North Kansas City, MO), there are several parks and one recreation center where parking is available. Community Park (138th and Switzer) Foxhill South Park (109th and El Monte) Foxhill North Park (Indian Creek Parkway and Roe) Roe Park (105th and Roe) Indian Creek Recreation Center (103rd and Marty) I-Lan Park (126th and Nall) Corporate Woods Founders' Park (9711 W. 109th St.) Indian Valley Park (116th and Knox) Quivira Park (119th and Quivira) Several branches that lead away from the trail are exciting to explore. However, if one is not careful (by not consulting a map), it is easy to get "lost" and not know exactly where you are. Wow--perfect for me. I agree with Andrew J., this trail is a local treasure. It's like a different world when you're on the trail, you can hardly believe you're in the middle of a city. It's not that crowded so you can easily bike on it without having to shout "On your left" too often. It does have some nice hills so you get a little bit more workout than the distance would suggest. And the distance makes for a good bike ride. I get on the trail right by Metcalf South's Sears Tire Center and ride it south to 103rd, then I have the tough decision whether to continue southwest or head east. If I head east I can get to Holmes maybe further or I can catch onto the Tomahawk creek trail. The good thing about this way is you're under tree cover most of the way and don't really see that you're in the city. Heading south you end up riding alongside 435 for a while and go through Corporate Woods. I haven't ridden the whole trail yet, I have to go a couple of miles before I even get on the trail. I'm trying to stretch it out so I can ride the whole thing and ride back. I know I want to ride the whole thing. My problems with the trail are relatively minor but worth pointing out. The first, more serious one is there tends to be a lot of dirt/mud runoff underneath some of the bridges that you can't see as you're descending under at a pretty good rate of speed. Once you're on it, it's just a matter of luck getting into a tire groove and through. If you aren't lucky you may slide and could end up in the creek or on some pretty big rocks. I've avoided this so far but it's something to be aware of. There are other places along the way with some dirt runoff covering the trail, but it's fairly easy to maneuver through. My second complaint is there are many branches of the trail and you can end up not taking the right one and ending up somewhere you don't want to be. I've unknowingly ended up on the Tomahawk Creek trail and had to backtrack to get where I needed to be. A couple of well placed markers, distance markers and maps along the way would be greatly beneficial. Aside from my minor complaints, this is a truly fantastic bike trail definitely worth checking out if you like a good long bike ride or a nice long walk or jog. read more

Johnson County is replete with recreation trails. The two biggest are the Mill Creek Streamway Trail, and the Indian Creek Trail. While Mill Creek tests a riders ability to ascend and descend, Indian Creek presents a test of endurance. There are 17.5 miles on the Kansas side, plus a shorter section in Kansas City. If you are in decent shape, then you should be able to complete a round-trip ride. For a more challenging ride, I suggest combining it with the Tomahawk Creek Trail. This trail will take you from Leawood City Park to 143rd and Pflumm. There are a few steep hills near the trail's western terminus. Once you have landed in Olathe, there are some roadside trails (along Pflumm, 138th St., Blackbob, and 151st St.) that will take you to mile 16.5 on the Indian Creek Trail. Overall, these trails offer a pleasant ride. I spend most of this ride in high gear, which makes for a relatively quick trip. However, you must also be aware of other riders, runners, walkers, etc. The trail can sometimes be crowded, and it's best to remember that it is a public amenity. The Olathe segment can be frustrating because it crosses at stoplights. If you do not like waiting for lights to turn green, then you might want to avoid the last few miles. read more

I'm writing this review from a cyclist's perspective. I'd give it a 4 star for walkers, and 3 for runners. 2 for cyclists. Here is why I'm not a fan of this trail for cycling: 1. The asphalt has severe frost heaves in many places, and lots of expansion cracks. This translates into a very rough ride, unless you're a 5mph pokey rider. I much prefer crushed gravel. On a bike, constant BAM BAM BAM as you hit the expansion gaps. 2. Constructions, closures, poorly marked detours. I got on today at Foxhill South, headed east. 2 or 3 miles later, construction at the Quik Trip on 103rd and Wornall, trail closed. No directions on how to detour. I rode around across Wornall, again was unable to re-access trail on the other side of Wornall due to construction. Turned around and rode back to FHS, figured I'd ride west. Nope. A couple miles west of Foxhill South, again construction, detours, no explanation of what is going on. Packed it in and rode back to car at this point. Planned on a 20 mile ride, settled for 10 out of frustration with trail conditions and closures. 3. If you actually want to get some fitness benefit from cycling, and not just putter around looking at trees, this is not the trail for you. Too many blind curves, etc, to keep up any decent speed for any length of time. Kind of a pita. Low prevailing speeds. On the plus side: 1. The walkers and runners on this trail were very conscientious and stayed right. Many trails, people wander all over the place and this makes it tough to cycle. On this trial, I noticed that people were smart and slower folk kept right pretty diligently. Kudos to the walkers. Of course, there are always the occasional side by side baby stroller pushers who hog the whole width of the trail, but relatively few of those here. Anyway, again, in summary: a nice trail to walk. If your definition of fitness is mall walking or slower, a great trail. Runners will be bothered by the frost heaves to some extent, and I'd only rate the trail fair at best for cycling. Little Blue Trace Trail, for instance, is light years better for cyclists. read more

This is a great trail to run. It has good scenery and is nicely shaded. The only negative is the water fountains are few and far between.

I've lived on Wornall and driven past the Indian Creek trail for four years now, and only recently decided I needed to start exercising more and starting riding this trail. I currently ride from Wornall to Metcalf and back every day--I love the trail, and because so much of it's in the shade, you can even ride at mid-day without getting too hot. After any storm be wary of mud and driftwood on the trail at low-points. This morning there was slops of mud up to four inches deep in some spots of the trail, and there was a pile of driftwood under the State Line/103rd St bridge over 3 feet tall! Tomorrow I'm actually heading to Holmes/99th, and I'm going to ride the trail all the way to the other end. :) Oh, and about seeing wildlife on the trail--the pic below was taken this evening at about 7 PM. We started at 127th and Blackbob and ran towards Garry Gribbles. The fireflys were still out and it was really cool.

Very nice trail with lots of scenery. It can get a little confusing in terms of being in the correct trail once you are by the Leawood Aquatic Center. For bikers, be careful at the sharp curves by the bridges. Too much speed combined with dirt or water on the asphalt will result in a nasty spill. If you are traveling west on the trail, it is closed at Switzer road for construction. You'll have to take the surface street to get on the next segment. Signs said it will be closed for Spring 2013. read more

I can't get enough of these beautiful trails, walked many many miles last Spring and Summer, decided I needed a bike, so now I'm exploring all over again, love how most of the trails are near enough to food to take a break for a bit to refuel, no need take food with me.
