I had an 8:00 a.m. appointment with Dr. Kevin Macadaeg. I so appreciate Dr. Macadaeg for his compassion, expertise, and communication skills. I've known him since he started the practice. He has treated various back issues for me successfully for seven years. I have probably referred six patients to him, all receiving superior care and outcomes. Today I am feeling hurt, betrayed, and yet in severe pain. I called the Carmel office two weeks ago to request an injection. The scheduler checked to insure that I was not violating a "waiting period" between shots. I explained that the pain had been more severe with a short three month span than I usually experience after nine months to a year after Dr. Mac's expert therapy. I'm back in my office after I was turned away, an hour ago because the front office had no record of my appointment. Bad show. The scheduler was pleasant and seemed pleased to slot me into an appointment within a relatively short wait given that my pain levels were so high. The front office staff this morning were agreeable and I believed attempted to fit me into the schedule after telling me that I did not have an appointment. I'm writing this arguably because I am disappointed. I will continue to depend on Dr Macadaeg and his care. Perhaps he and his partners might examine best practices regarding their support staff processes. I've now had 3 surgeries for my spine at Indiana Spine Group. On my last follow up visit, I let my surgeon know that I have significant upper thigh and hip flexor pain. He had x-rays taken and it's been over a week and I cannot get anyone to provide me information on the findings. Yet I've an appointment to have an injection in the hip for the pain, which has yet to be diagnosed. I'm quite frustrated with the lack of follow up communication. I get the feeling that as long as one's in line for a surgery, you are nurtured but following surgery, not. Finally, the administrative team that manages their PT office does not confirm appointments nor communicate on other issues. read more

I was referred to the Indiana Spine Group by my primary care physician. I was experiencing significant back pain. I was seen by Dr. Konopka & Dr. Adams in both the Greenwood & Bloomington offices. The first 5-star comment goes to the scheduling staff. They could not get me in until the next calendar year; I advised them that I lived closeby and if they had a cancellation to please call me. They did exactly that, and I was able to get in quickly. Excellent job by the scheduling staff listening, and making the appropriate entries in the computer system to allow them to reach out to me when an appointment suddenly opened up. Thank you for being so efficient and responsible!!! The next 5-star comment goes to the nursing and support staff. They bent over backwards (pun intended) and made extraordinary efforts to squeeze my injection appointment in (pun also intended) at the end of the year, then quickly worked to obtain pre-authorization from my insurance company - successfully; their quick action saved me significant personal expense; I am very grateful for their excellent skill, attitude, willingness to help, and truly going above and beyond to assist their patient. Their level of service was absolutely top-notch. Finally, my last 5-star comment goes to Doctor Jeffrey Konopka & Doctor Brian Adams. Dr. Konopka's assessment and initial consultation was professional, timely, and he was very explanative answering all my questions. Dr. Adams medical care and communication skills during my injection procedure were flawless. Most impressively, even though Dr. Konopka was not on site, I heard Dr. Adams consult with him twice about two different concerns; the availability provided by Dr. Konopka and the willingness to immediately consult by Dr. Adams showed me that this is a tight knit group of professionals. I appreciated how answers and decisions were made immediately instead of the expected response of: "I'll consult with him and get back with you as soon as possible as he is out of the office at this moment." Truly impressive. Finally, Dr. Adams skills were superior because his shot placement completely relieved my pain at this time. While I know this might just be temporary, I am so thankful that it was 100% effective. In summary, my experience with the Indiana Spine Group scheduling staff individual, the nursing staff for Dr. Konopka, Dr. Konopka himself, the nursing staff for Dr. Adams, and Dr. Adams himself - were all superior. I could not have asked for a better group. I recently met Dr. Michael McCarthy of Indiana Spine Group, for a consult regarding my lumbar stenosis. I could not be happier with my experience. Doctor McCarthy was very personable and professional. It was refreshing to find a doctor who would actually listen to my concerns and answer my questions. He took the time to review my diagnosis thoroughly and with images showed me the areas requiring surgery. At no point did he try to compel me to make an immediate decision about having the surgery. I must mention the staff I met. The girls I saw at intake were very amiable and made me feel like more than just a number. And lastly, I must give kudos to Dr. McCarthy's clinical nurse, Krista. She is simply amazing. Her years of experience have taught her well academically and given her people skills you rarely find in the medical environment. I'm at 9 months, (2) implants and (3) pain specialists later. We originally contacted ISG to repair a damaged Spinal Decompression and herniated disc issue. it was yes yes yes we will implant an SCS in your back, this pacemaker will control and dissolve your back pain. With the 1st surgery, the SCS leads moved creating level 8 & 9 pain thresholds. ISG was too busy to investigate WHY the increased pain levels. "I turned the pacemaker off." 4wks after the 1st surgery they Scoped my spine, oh oh oh the leads have moved, we need to do this surgery over. Insurance Co. now in the situation. After the 2nd SCS surgery, pain thresholds drop, but (7) program changes later, pain levels flex between 3 and 7. We have had to invest into bio-lateral spinal injections, quarterly to be able to walk. Now lets discuss sleeping, the back spasms dictate my sleep patterns which are up and down 24/7/365. I'm, tired and very disgusted with ISG and Abbott Labs. DON'T go there, they are only interested in your Insurance Card. After $115K expenditures, I don't see Drs. just White Coat "operators" whose REAL-Time efficiency ratios are a faction of what they SELL out their front office. read more

I was referred to ISG for installation of a SCS pain controller. After the 1st botch surgery, I had to wait 3 months on the Insurance Co.for a Do-Over. Then comes 5 months of uncontrolled pain moving from 3-7 Rms. Then I'm told in Jan '23 we need to establish a new bench mark. Come to find out, the Program that was left on the SCS Controller was only a Play-bob. U could run the controls up , down or off. Same pain sensations, persisted NO difference, that meant the whole Pain Management Set was a fraud. I've had the controller for 11 months, during that period ISG has had the Unit turned off 5 months due to their operational issues. But, ISG cashed the checks very quickly and I was charged a 2nd deductible. I have been told later, that they assure success with a 50% reduction in pain? That was a huge shift from what the Front Office was selling in early 2022 , Complete Pain Control. (Still waiting for ISG to show up) read more

I'm not one to leave bad reviews, but watch out for this place. Indiana Spine Group makes it extremely difficult to find straightforward pricing for almost anything. When asked how much the doctors visit or an MRI was, all I got from anyone was "I don't know" and that it depended on insurance. Yes, the insurance company will cover a certain amount based on your deductible, but to not have clear pricing in my opinion is... unacceptable!!! On other note, when calling Indiana Spine Group. Expect to call a half a dozen times for almost anything. No one picks up the phone, returns your voicemail, or knows anything (see above). read more

Dr. Smucker's CMA is very rude, and non caring. They will not allow you to change providers if your provider does not typically do the procedure that you need, you can not go to that provider. You are stuck with that provider. So have to have that doctor do your surgery. I have found another provider at Ortho Indy who does do my type of surgery. You also NEVER see the doctor even if you are having a problem. Thank twice before going there. read more

While the actual medical staff seem competent, the front office is not. The prior authorization staff did not submit the authorization paperwork for two weeks and only did so after we called insurance to see what was taking so long and were told they had never received a request. We were then lied to by the Spine Group who only came clean when we demanded to see the fax confirmation. This tells me two things: 1. They do not follow up with insurance at all to make sure the correct paperwork was received and 2. There is no reasonable expectation that any bill received will be accurate because they obviously don't understand how healthcare insurance works. To make matters worse, this is a Medicaid policy and we were told by the office manager several times: "well this happens with your kind of insurance" meaning that the Spine Group seems to prioritize commercial patients over Medicaid which they are contractually barred from doing by IHCP. My advice: don't go here if you can help it, but if you can't, demand proof that all paperwork was submitted timely and accurately to your insurance. Follow up with your insurance no longer than 72 hours after they told you it was submitted. We will be reporting them to Medicaid, but I hope someone else reads this and can avoid these issues when dealing with your own healthcare. This screw up has caused an additional two to three weeks of debilitating back pain and I would hate to see someone else suffer at the hands of their incompetence. read more

I went to the Spine Group after an MRI showed that I had a herniated disc. I was surrounded by young people in the waiting room who were taking many pain meds a day and who were there again for injections for pain and had been dealing with horrible pain for years. I am in my thirties. They told me that I could have surgery but let's first do some cortisone shots and do I want narcotics? I said no to the narcotics since they make me itch but I went for the cortisone shot. It helped minimally and after a few weeks I began to have shooting pain down my leg and then my leg and foot weren't working well. (Not from the shot but apparently the disc was moving further out). I showed them that I had "foot drop" and that I needed to know what to do next. They gave me another cortisone shot and told me to call them in a month. A MONTH! I am dragging my leg like Quasimodo and they want me to call back in a month? My father in law knew some people who he sent my MRI to. All three of the Spine doctors at these different places wanted me in surgery that day. They told me if I had waited a month I could have lost permanent function of my foot and possibly worse. I got immediate surgery and am almost 100 percent. There are many other very good Spine places to go to and I would never send anyone to The Spine Group. It almost cost me my functionality at a young age. read more

This review is of the Kokomo branch of a Indiana Spine Group. I haven't been to their other clinics. I made the appointment last week and did the pre-registration online, as instructed. I showed up at 10:03 a.m., my appointment time was for 10 a.m. First impressions: the front lobby smelled unpleasantly familiar; then, I recognized it: Port-o John. It was probably the cleanser or something they used, but it was foul. There were bathrooms in that front lobby hallway, so, it could've been a dirty bathroom I was smelling. Even so, this is a doctors' office, right? It shouldn't smell like a public toilet. Next, the waiting room was extremely low budget. I used to be in social work, and this is the kind of clinic that you would find in public housing complexes and Medicaid clinics. The harsh lighting above and industrial brown, low-pile carpet immediately concerned me; the beat-up chairs and Formica tables scattered around the waiting area confirmed my fears. So, I should have been prepared for the series of brochures promoting local businesses and a bizarre trophy for a hot rod award, or something, lining the wall approaching the check-in window. I immediately had serious doubts about my choice of back specialists. I waited at the check-in window for several minutes--even though no one was in line in front of me--and watched the two receptionists talking back and forth. The receptionist finally slid the glass window open and asked how she could help me. I stepped forward and gave her my name and appointment time. She said that my appointment had been at 9:30; I explained that I was told to be there at 10 a.m. She replied that I should have received a phone call confirming the time, but then remarked, "although a lot of people are telling me they're not getting our phone calls." No apology; no emotion at all, in fact. She asked when I'd like reschedule my appointment. I felt relieved that I had avoided treatment at this dodgy clinic and told her I would find another provider. read more

Indiana Spine Group has everything needed for spine health in one building, including spinal diagnostics and therapeutics, physical therapy, chiropractic and imaging. Everyone on staff is friendly, caring and knowledgeable. I appreciate that the doctors listen to their patients and do not suggest surgery as the first and only option. They are willing to discuss a multi-prong approach to treatment and pain management, and they have almost everyone in the same "office". If you get an X-ray or MRI, they are happy to burn a copy on CD for you. I highly recommend Dr. Smucker (Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon) and Dr. Macadaeg (Minimally Invasive Spine Specialist). read more

I have been suffering for months with pain. The pain I wouldn't wish on anyone. I would leave work and just go home and cry my eyes out, some days I barley made it to the parking lot before the tears would come i actually had to leave on stress leave because my mental health broke down due to all the pain. My elbow and hand and upper arms were burning and falling asleep nonstop. For months I was sent to an arm dr who was amazing, we all thought it was my arm. Dr kaplain finally determined it was in my neck and I was sent to Dr funk. Dr funk is amazing and very good with people. He figured out what was wrong and before I knew it I was getting injections. I just had two injections today I'm hoping they work. Regardless of my outcome everyone here has been nothing but wonderful to me. The staff is always polite and the doctors know what they are doing. I would recommend them to anyone and I'm currently in the process of trying to get my sister a 20 year pain suffered car accident victim that most drs don't care about to see Dr funk as well. Dr Boody is absolutely WONDERFUL. He has a perfect blend of compassion - educating his patients - sense of humor - a super tactician - & a genuine concern of his patient's "head space" to take on the 2nd part of the surgery which is healing & recovery. He politely came into my hospital room during morning rounds w/ a flash light to prevent blinding me w/ a bright hospital light. He also allowed my daughter to ask questions via FaceTime during office appointments (Covid restrictions). I have had SEVEN spine surgeries so I can truthfully say I have some insight of what is entailed in having a spine surgery. ALSO, I noticed hospital staff speaks highly of Dr. Boody which says a lot. Dr. Boody's staff are professional & approachable. I have never heard staff be impolite to patients. And I've heard several demeaning patients in the waiting room! If anyone is critical of this practice it must be because they are having trouble w/ the healing process, pain, feelings of inconvenience or confusion over the maze of healthcare. It honestly can't be Dr. Boody or his staff. If anything, I think Indiana Spine Group would benefit by addressing the mental ups & downs of surgery w/patients by providing concrete resources at the time of scheduling the surgery (folder w/ surgery info) & follow up info given w/ physical therapy orders after surgery. Maybe it would help patients own their recovery? My previous spine surgeries were in Waukesha Wisconsin, Chicago & Indianapolis. I've also been seen at Mayo Clinic. Unless you have Obamacare (Affordable Insurance Act) Insurance, do no go to Indiana Spine Group, unless you are prepared to be charged an arm and a leg to have your back treated! Or if you are willing to be bait and switched! Here's my story. I went to Indiana Spine Group initially to have my back treated after living with back issues for quite a while. I was diagnosed effectively and was prescribed an epidural for my spine to help alleviate my back pain that at the time ranged from 5-8 on the 10 point pain scale. Initially, I was overall quite happy with their service (although the wait in the examination rooms could be a little long). I was also initially happy with their billing practices as well as they charged everyone the same price. I was getting an epidural every so often, and I was getting charged a reasonable price for it. Recently, without any warning, Indiana Spine Group decided to move me (and apparently others without Obamacare insurance) to a "different facility" in the same building for my treatment. I saw no issues with this as I figured since it was still my doctor treating me, and the facility was owned by Indiana Spine Group that I would be charged the same price at the end of the day. I was completely wrong! When I received my bill a few days later, I found I was being charged 4-5 times the original amount! Thinking this was a billing error of some point, I called and asked to speak to someone regarding the price increase. Explaining that I have gotten this procedure multiple times and knew the price I should be charged for it. I was given all kinds of different excuses on why I was now being charged nearly 5 times the original amount. Some included that they were now segregating patients whether they had Obamacare, or they were trying to move people around based on their individual needs and other reasons. I went so far as to speak to the billing manager who tried to say that since I signed the billing agreement that I had no fight and that I should get over it and pay my bill. I told her it was bad customer service if nothing else to not warn your patients that you are going to charge them 5 times the original amount. She repeated her original arguments, where I felt like she was just trying to blow me off. I asked to speak to her manager as well, but was not given anything positive that told me would actually connect me. This is why I am trying to do my duty and warn anyone else looking into going here, to not do so! Spend your money somewhere else! I realize you are probably in pain if you are reading this review, but there are plenty of other options for pain management here in Indy, and I plan to explore them myself as well. read more

This review is for the N. Meridian branch. To make a long story short I use Dr. Vitto who is fantastic however my opinion of this facility takes a dramatic turn because of their billing practices. I have called numerous times and always reached a recording that says they will return my call at THEIR earliest convenience. I have waited 3 weeks and have not received a call so I can pay this bill. I finally go online and pay the bill I have on hand which is a different amount that they say I owe. Ok, then the receipt has another amount stilled owed. I know they were having serious computer systems problem a while back but now it boils down to extremely poor customer service and incompetence. I no longer have confidence that I am being properly charged or credited. I love you Dr. Vitto and staff but I have to find a facility that is the whole package. read more

My experience with ISG has been with the Kokomo group, and particularly with Dr. Thomas Reilly. Dr. Reilly "hit the nail on the head" not only in diagnosis and surgery, but also follow-up care and education about nerves and their healing. Dr. Reilly is very pastoral in his patient care, being willing to any answers a patient or pt's family. He gives each pt. as much time as the pt. needs and wants. One of his favorite questions is "Is there anything else I can try to answer for you?" His main goal is pt. care and not making as much $'s as possible. I would post ZERO if possible. I had incredible pain radiating down my arm. They did X-rays and MRI - my follow-up lasted 5 minutes maybe. The doctor suggested I might have RA and I should mention to my GP. I did and had an immediate blood test - NEGATIVE except for scary me almost to death. I basically got a brush off from the ISG doctor and knew it - my dad had been a surgeon. Well anyway - 3 days later I get a call from my GP who had received the radiology report and told me he was scheduling an immediate 2nd opinion. I got a copy of the report and sent it to an out-of-state doctor for yet a 3rd opinion. The out-of-state doctor said I needed attention - he added that the doctor might probably was looking for fast money - uncomplicated surgery. I went for the 2nd opinion and the doctor was engaged and took time to show me the MRI - explaining situation and giving me options. I chose surgery and it was the best care I have ever received. Six weeks later I am PAIN FREE!!! If I hadn't had a caring GP who actually looked at the report - I would still be in pain - which is what I gathered from ISG was my future - just live with it. So now I received a bill from ISG and I am to pay over $1000 co-pay. This plus my new surgery bill has set me back. I don't mind paying the good surgeon --- Buyer Beware!!!!!!!!!! read more

The women they have rooming people are very rude!!!!!!!!!!! I have experienced this on my visit a d the. I went to Indiana Spine Group after a recent cosmetic surgery I had due to some left over swelling in my lower back along with some pain in my spine. I was 5 weeks out after my surgery and my doctor had referred me here for a check up because the cosmetic surgery I had done had nothing to do the area that was swelling on my lower back. I was told to arrive 30 minutes before my actual appointment to fill out paperwork. I got to the office by 11:05 my appointment was for 11:30. I had already done all the necessary paperwork online they asked of me. I sat down with a nurse in the waiting area and filled out more paperwork and then was put in a room to wait for the doctor. Naturally I expected for them to give me a bit of the run around before actually seeing the doctor because I had never been there before. Because I didn't come with images (MRI or X-ray) the nurse raised an eyebrow at me for not coming with any of those images. Which tells me she wasn't paying a bit of attention when I told her I wasn't in there because of an injury I just needed advice on my lower back and if after the surgery I had this was normal. After waiting for about 30 minutes we're now at 12:00 pm and an x-ray tech steps in and says they need to do imaging. I politely told him no and that I'd prefer to talk to the doctor before doing imaging as once again my swelling wasn't a result of injury. He was annoyed with me that I refused but told me he would send the doctor in anyhow. I waited another 20 minutes for the doctor to come in. He was very nice and agreed with me that I didn't need imaging and apologized about the staff pushing it on me. After reading through everything he had me taken care of and on my way. The real reason I was dissatisfied with this place was truly because instead of treating me like a patient I was treated like a number. In order for the monotony to stop I had to say I wasn't going to go along with their little plan to charge me out the wazoo by taking images and reading them in the same day. I couldn't help but think they force this on everyone that doesn't have it in them to say no first and talk to a doctor before hand. It makes me wonder if that is how they are paying for the brand new fancy expansion taking place there. Although the doctor was kind and understanding, the staff was taught to be pushy and insistent. Beware of this place and know that as a patient it is ok to say no and ask to speak to someone before they do imaging. read more

This place is organized chaos. You step off the elevator to a tiny hallway that gets very congested. You need to print your name on a publicly viewable form. None of the staff are friendly and there seems to a huge number of them walking about. My doctor was about 40 minutes late, even though I was told no one was waiting to see him when I arrived. He spent less than five minutes with me. Event though I had had an MRI he did not show it to me. read more
