The owner was very friendly & suggested we try their olive oil + za'atar spice blend with some como bread from the bakery around the corner. That's my perfect kind of snack, so I did exactly that and am here to report back that it is in fact delicious! Very special to find these imported goods & I find food shared from all over the world to be the most special thing in life. There are so many Turkish towels it's mind blowing. I'm a big fan of Turkish towels because they are super absorbent, dry quickly, and fold up without bulk. I keep one in my gym bag because it's light. I use daily after my shower and wash several times a week. After 6 years it still looks brand new! Indigo Traders has solid towels in every color of the rainbow and every hue within a color palette. And an equal amount of striped towels. They come fringed, no fringe or with tassels. In every size: bath, hand, kitchen and even table cloths and napkins. Truly an amazing and vast collection displayed beautifully along the walls on shelves with easy visibility and access. In the kitchen area, the copper tea pots and coffee pots are beautiful and functional. I bought one several years ago while in Turkey and I keep it out on display all the time. Olive wood is all the rage these days, the grain in the wood creating patterns that make these pieces beautiful to look at while being functional. Indigo Traders has a varied assortment that includes charcuterie boards, ladles, salad bowls and serving tongs, small round dipping bowls, salt containers, cheese spreaders, mortal & pestals, serving dishes and more! These olive wood pieces speak to me! I have several; they add warmth to your kitchen and home. For the foodies - myself included - there are jars of honey, bottles of Moroccan olive oil, pomegranate syrup, rose water and seasonings. A selection of Turkish coffee and black tea. Lots of drinking glasses, ceramic bowls, cookbooks, and kitchen towels. The bed and bath selection is just as impressive with big chunky soaps, bath bombs and lotions. Provence Sante pure vegetable soaps in soft colors and scents. Bed linens and covers, baskets, colorful Turkish rugs and pillows. Don't forget to look up, the hanging mosaic lamps are exquisite! Service is friendly, they let you browse on your own while being available to answer any and all questions. There is no getting around it, everything is expensive. Some items feel excessively so. Yes, it's top quality, but I have many similar items and paid far less. One example is the olive wood serving spoons, ladles and salad tongs. The ladle was $65 and I paid $12 at another home store. My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this store as we were headed to dinner. When I say everything is gorgeous, I mean everything is GORGEOUS. I was so in love that I forgot to take photos but I'll post the two kitchen hand towels that I purchased. All the textiles are stunning, high quality and simply classic and the hand feel is unforgettable. The price is not low (each towel was $25.00 each) but once you feel see and touch, it's worth the splurge. They have beautiful wood pieces (bowls, spoons, dipping bowls), towels of all sizes, throws/blankets, Turkish treats, the most amazing smelling soaps and even apparel. I need to remember to frequent this place when I need a hostess gift. They have pre-made gifts that anyone would love to receive. This shop has been around for quite some time, has a fun and interesting history, offers a nice selection of unique Mediterranean goods, and is incredibly visually appealing. The goods can be a bit on the pricey side but everything is high quality. What is so unappealing is that the owner/staff don't seem to get the local culture despite their many years in operation. They are on you like white on rice. There is no easy browsing or shopping in peace. They will follow you around and talk at you unsolicited, nonstop and it can be very uncomfortable at times. I keep trying to come back hoping things will improve. They moved into a larger space and I was pretty eager to check it out but left after only a few minutes when immediately the commentary and sales push started HARD the moment I walked in. If you are tired of musty smelling, always slightly damp towels (a constant in the PNW or the South) you NEED these linen towels. If you want to cut your carbon footprint by not using 45-50 minutes of dryer time, you NEED these towels. They are also incredible for travel (use as a towel, a sarong, a glamorous shawl)- they pack small, cover large, and dry quickly. The beautiful shop also has an amazing selection of olive oil soaps, household items, and edible goodies including a large selection of lokum (Turkish delight), and two delectable dipping/ finishing oils from the Palestinian territories that are the BEST I have ever tasted. Indigo Traders has recently opened a branch in Hillsdale. It's right next to my Son's favourite hang out (Other Worlds), which gives me a chance to look around while he's having fun with his friends. Indigo Traders specializes in textiles, ceramics, and various sundries from all over the Mediterranean. This Store is larger than it's Multnomah Village Sister, but oddly has a more limited selection for what I was looking for. I know that because I visited both stores back-to-back during my most recent visit. I was also around when both Stores were offering 20% off everything. I almost pulled the trigger on a nice red and black scarf for Gayle, but was called off after calling her to check. My backups were the Turkish towels and a few gift ideas for when I return. read more

I live a few blocks from this store and having spent a portion of my life in Morocco and Peru, where textiles are cherished, was excited to see a store with familiar high quality goods. Upon entering, I was followed around by the owner who clearly thought I was going to take something. Having once managed a popular retail store in a busy downtown area in my 20s I know the difference of a store employee wanting to give customer assistance vs. a store employee who expects you to steal something. I will never step foot in that place and made to feel so uncomfortable again. When I bought my new home I was honestly upset to receive two towels from Indigo Traders from our Realtor. Lots of olive wood items, copper kettles, Turkish towels, bowls, glasses, etc. There is a table full of chunky soaps, which I can never resist. There is no price tag, but I buy fancy soap all the time and didn't think to ask as I brought two bars up to the cash register. Turns out that the soaps are $28 each! I was shocked, but I don't mind helping out after a tough year. However I doubt I'll buy soap there again as there are a lot of more reasonable options. But I'll definitely go back if I need a special gift. read more

I can't say enough good things about Indigo Traders, and owner Samir! My mother had given me one of his beautiful olive wood salad bowls as a gift, and I decided to do the same for a friend's wedding. The Indigo Traders' bowls are exceptional in their quality, and I wasn't willing to buy one elsewhere. However, the size I preferred wasn't in. Samir went out of his way to find one, and within days is shipping it to my friend. This is a beautiful store full of unique textiles and gifts. The owner and staff are extremely friendly and helpful. It's true that some of the towels are more expensive than what you might find in a large chain store, but they are also artisan made and much higher quality than you might find in a big box store. Wife and I stumbled on them after a lazy breakfast at Fat City in Multnomah Village. They specialize in Mediterranean stuff and it comes from all over the world and each and every item has a story to it that reminds you the world is a small place and we are all connected. We first ended up in their towels, soaps and lines store (they have two right there in the village) and ended up getting schooled on soaps and towels (who knew such a thing existed) by a very educated and beautiful young lady. We bought a soap "sampler" for $15 and have not bought shampoo in months as we now use all of their olive oil based bars of soap. Of the five bars in the sample pack, each has a story and comes from a different place in the world. Then we learned all about towels...who knew...the towels were amazing as well, whole story to them, but ended up not buying one that day. They have another store, across the street that is more kitchenware, dishes, bedding, blankets, etc and it was here we met the owner (totally cool guy who made me a Turkish Coffee) and we bought some spices and wife and Mom bought some cool scarves. Flash forward two months to my 40th birthday and my Mom purchased me a new sample pack of soap and a "shower towel" for my present and by far, best gift in years! I love this towel, it is eco-friendly in so many ways and it is just one of those you have to use it to believe it kind of things. Love this little shop. Snuggled in the quaint Multnomah Village, Indigo Traders is a trip. A trip away from Portland into another continent. The Facade of each little shop in Multnomah Village has their own design and color scheme. Indigo Traders' is my favorite. Bright Blue and Happy. The scent upon arrival is also my fave. Coffee and Soap. I'm all about smells. And these two scents are both relaxing and invigorating to me. They recently acquired the space next door to expand on. It provides a deeper space to stuff more items. My fave side is still the coffee side. The walls are covered in tiles and appears more foreign. The owner and all the shop employees are very kind and helpful. I always enjoy my visits. The owners travel to Turkey and Morocco for their wares. Which include soaps, lotions, artistic pottery, clothing, linens, towels, and TURKISH COFFEE!!!!!!!! Well, truthfully the coffee is locally grown, but internationally inspired. LOL. I like to take my time and poke around a bit. The shop owner or employees will make you a little cup of Turkish Coffee. So fun. I strongly recommend one should pop in just for a cup of it. read more

My home is filled with items from this store, but the atmosphere just seems to be a little less inviting lately. If you are looking for a unique gift, love having a personal shopper at your elbow, and have plenty of money to spend then Indigo Traders is your place. If you are looking for a leisurely, no-pressure shopping environment that caters to people of differing income levels, Indigo Traders is not the place to go. So about the no pressure thing: The sales staff hover much too closely, offering a stream of rave reviews about all the wonderful (but pricey) items. I know the towels are amazing, yes I have tried the olive oil soap, uh-huh the bowls are beautiful - you've had the same inventory in here for a long time and I just told you I come here often, but still you are following me around the store with the same pitch you gave last time I was here. Then actually purchasing my items resulted in an uncomfortable experience last time, which made me feel that the cashier was more concerned with making an extra dollar or two (I had a chinook book coupon) than having me leave happy. Apparently none of the gift baskets I picked out as ummmm gifts were valid . . . The savings would have been small to me, so that wasn't my issue, but last year when I went coupon Christmas shopping I bought the exact same items here. The store expanded (to another location across the street), and then went back to only having one location, so I hope that the newly awkward shopping environment lessens for shoppers as things settle back in at Indigo Traders, but I think I will try a few new places to finish out my holiday shopping this year. My sister and I, after grabbing a quick snack at Baker & Spice, decided to visit this store. There was a sale going on and my interest was piqued by all the pretty scarves and dishes. The woman in the store was friendly and inviting telling us about the "evil eye" and the style of dishes. They have pretty linens and dishes, delightfully scented lotions and soaps, and some serious scarf selections. The sale made the reasonable prices just that much better. I was really glad that they also had a scarf selection for men. This shop is well organized and well kept by the people that work here. Definitely worth a visit! read more

This is my splurge spot, my place to go when I really want to get myself something nice. I'm slowly converting all of my towels to their Turkish Bath towels, they dry so quickly, they get softer every time you wash them (instead of stiffer and more scratchy every time like terrycloth), and they're compact and travel-able. The owner is very knowledgeable about his products, and has good recommendations to fit your needs (and your wants. The scarves and soaps are definitely wants for me). He even weaves some textiles in house, which is super cool. You get super local and fun imports from far away in the same spot! Interesting variety of mostly Moroccan imports: tagines, textiles, foodstuffs, soaps, and clothing. On my last trip to Indigo Traders one of the salesguys was a bit too persistent for my taste. I like to take my time when looking at things I might buy, and he kept coming over to tell me a bunch of stuff about everything I was looking at. I think he told me that almost everything I was considering was selling well, too. This became suspect after a while. I guess you can't blame the guy for trying, though. Both my friend and I walked out with bags in the end, and we like what we bought, but I might sneak a peek through the window before I go in again, just to avoid the aggressive salesguy. read more

The salesperson, Dan, was a total sweetheart. I came in 10 minutes before closing but was not rushed at all. He shared his enthusiasm for a couple items I was looking at but never tried to "sell" me. When I perused the gorgeous pashmina shawls on sale (75% off!), he offered to go look at their stock to find any particular color I might want that wasn't on the shelves. I walked out with 4 shawls, two lovely seaglass dishes and a cute carafe of recycled glass. What a beautiful store! I want to move in and try all the yummy soaps and towels and scrubs. There are two stores, across the street from each other, and I only allowed myself to explore the Bath store, as the products were too scrumptious and expensive to really indulge. I asked the owner/sales lady questions about the Turkish Bath Towel, the peshtamel, and she answered them without being pushy or condescending. The only problem I had with Indigo Bath was that there were too many colors and patterns of towels to choose from and I couldn't get one of each! I experienced the hovering salesman, which I admit made my experience less pleasant, and I bought less as a result. I just chalked it up to a cultural difference. I have been to Turkey and shopped there. That is how a shopkeeper in Turkey sells his goods, by constantly showing you more stuff that he wants you to buy. My friend and I stumbled into this shop as we were walking around Multnomah Village and I fell in love! I live in the village but for whatever reason just hadn't gone in before. We were helped by a very kind, knowledgeable blonde employee whose name I didn't get, but she was so sweet and helpful! First off, they give you complimentary Turkish tea or coffee so that's a great start to the shopping experience. They have wonderful products that actually support talented textile artists and aren't made in abusive sweatshops.
