I'm so glad I stopped at this tiny little shop. The employee (owner?) greeted me as soon as I came in but then let me roam freely, offering help if I needed. The store is really warm and welcoming--I loooooveee all the plants draped around the place. They support many local artists, which is why I love visiting small businesses. They carry some really beautiful jewelry, a nice selection of clothes, and other gifts (for yourself or someone else). The jewelry always catches my eye and I found some really nice earrings and other pieces, but what really caught my eye was this awesome bracelet. It is rather dainty and has some small gemstones in it--the one I chose has multiple stones, but they also had a garnet one that I considered as well. What's particularly cool and unique about the bracelet is the closure system. It doesn't have a traditional (or even non-traditional) clasp; instead it has a bolo closure. I know that there are bolo bracelets but I've never seen it on a piece with gemstones. Since this was my first stop of the day in this shopping trip, I decided not to go too hog wild in here though they had several things that I could have taken home with me. The parking right in front is rather sparse, but there is street parking along the various streets nearby for all the shops here. read more

I met the owner in Paloma's and she was an absolute delight to talk to about stones. Very knowledgeable full of lovely energy. My sister and I went to her store and spent time there met Genevieve, very delightful and helpful as we meandered around the store, looking and asking questions. Sarah J. Handmade presents a unique combination of women's jewelry and clothing, along with various handcrafted items and native stones. It's a small boutique, with the various well curated items nicely displayed over several rustic shelves on both sides. I dragged David in with me, thinking about Gayle. He took immediate interest with the stones, and talked me into buying a neat amethyst stone. I also suspect that he'll be back for another rock that he was admiring and chatting up with the owner. I ended up with something that Gayle might mock me as "feeling good in my hand" It was an upcycled man purse/wallet made from old military tents. Pricing was reasonable, and I'm sure I'll be back for additional inspiration. read more

I love this store. I love the concept. Gift shop doesn't begin to describe the brilliance of this little Multnomah Village treasure chest. Sarah J has combined the artisan workshop with a great collection of unique items including hand crafted, fair trade, locally made jewelry, art, and clothing. The beauty of having an artisan in store is that they have a wealth of knowledge about the products, gems and stones. In addition they are able to create special one of a kind items by request. I have had a couple items customized to my particular preference and they are always kind and accommodating. Shopping for Christmas and birthdays just became a joy instead of a chore. Sarah's shop is THE best gift giving (or self giving) shop in Portland. It's next door to a delicious breakfast spot (Down to Earth) in Multnomah Village and always has a fun selection of handmade jewelry, candles, soaps, and crystals. Everyone who works there is kind. A friend visiting Portland fell in love with a particular stone in Sarah's shop but it wasn't in the design of earring my friend desired. Sarah said "I'll make it! Hold on a minute." She was back in about 15 minutes and had made the perfect custom earrings for my friend. My favorite necklace is from Sarah's shop. After wearing it for quite some time a small piece came loose. I brought it back into the store and they fixed it for free. Always above and beyond my expectations and all around nice people. read more

This little business with the narrow green door and adorable garden box outside encompasses everything I love about this part of the city. Additionally, the prices are overall reasonable for the very gorgeous and unique jewelry, home goods, clothing and more that make up the offerings at this boutique. You can tell Sarah and her employees have curated the selection themselves - carefully and passionately. They seem to each know a little something about the artists and are enthusiastic to share that knowledge. I've probably purchased twelve pairs of earrings, a bushel of sage, and a couple candles here so far for girlfriends. Not sure why I haven't 5-star reviewed this shop one hundred times over. I absolutely love everything about this little store. The staff, the selection of clothing and especially the jewelry are all top notch. I have shopped here at least once a month religiously for almost 2 years and I've NEVER been disappointed with my purchases. The quality of the products cannot be matched. I used to buy from the average department stores and found myself buying more, more often due to seams falling apart on clothing, gems popping out of statement necklaces, but not here. I have an extensive collection of Sarah J finds and not even the very first pair of suede fringe earrings I bought here show any sign of wear (though I wear them frequently). This past birthday my dad didn't know what to get me, and knowing how much I love Sarah's, he gave the ladies a dollar amount he'd have spent elsewhere and they put together a lovely selection of gifts. Candles, body scrubs, lip balm, and even the sweater I'd picked up and looked at several weeks prior but put back to get a summer dress instead. That's the kind of service you'll receive here.
