"The 2,400-square-foot store is filled with thousands of works of art and folk crafts made by Illinois artisans. The wide variety spans the genre of arts and crafts and includes large collections of fine oil paintings, graphic arts and pottery as well as homemade specialty soaps, jewelry, exotic woods crafts, metal crafts, quilts and much more. including clocks, pens, wine bottle holders, boxes and cutting boards. The garden center green house is filled with seasonal plants and the shop offers a full line of garden supplies. There's always something happening at Silver Creek Mill Every week artists and artisans are invited to demonstrate their work in the store near the homey fireplace surrounded by comfortable leather sofas. In the summer, many events move outside to the Farmers Market or Universal Garden. The shop is operated by volunteers and proceeds support Trinity Services, Inc. adult learning and residential programs for people with developmental disabilities." This year I began volunteering and patronizing Silver Creek's local farmer's market and although smaller than most, they always have quality organic produce options, musicians performing, and fine people to talk to. It is truly a great and fulfilling feeling to be supporting an organization that does such good in the Mascoutah area! Try it out for a Saturday through the growing season. 8:00-12:30 pm.

If you are a shade-gardening enthusiast, or anyone looking for easy to care for plants for a shady…read morearea, Hostas on the Bluff is an absolute must-visit. While they historically focused just on hostas and hellebores, they look to have expanded their inventory to include a variety of other plants this season. The hellebores were out of season during my recent spring visit, but the hosta selection was incredible. I brought home four new plants: two stunning, blue-green 'Halcyon' and two crisp, white-edge 'Patriot' hostas. The retail operation recently moved three minutes down the road from the original property (which is now a display garden) to a historical 1920s brick schoolhouse. The retail plants are housed in a massive greenhouse on-site. They are still organizing the inventory by hosta size, but it's already mostly easy to navigate and a blast to explore. The customer service is low-key but knowledgable. I initially didn't realize the woman working was an employee since she was dressed in a college hoodie, but she turned out to be very helpful and knowledgeable about the varieties. Between the unique schoolhouse setting and the unparalleled selection, this is a local treasure for plant lovers! The Breakdown Selection: + Quality: Pricing: Staff Helpfulness: Vibe:
