Okay, fine. This place is actually pretty great. The person working there just acted like they knew more than me, and that's just incorrect. I had a really good convo with I think the owner about a plant they are propagating that there's a wait-list for that I covet, and he was pretty honest about it just being popular right now and that is why it is hard to get. My summer garden today is a tribute to the assistance I received from the Indoor Sun Shoppe. They sold me trays, sterile soil, seeds, and a grow light in the beginning of March. We seem to have a terrarium addiction at our house. If you've come by, it's clear that every available surface is covered in a thrift store purchased glass container with rocks and some form of air plant in it. If you've gotten one recently as a gift from us, I wish it was because we really are that sweet to have thought of you, but it's really mostly because we can't move about the house and we need to clear them out. Preface: I have never been able to keep anything alive, regardless of how "low maintenance" it may have been. I stopped in here one day while walking along the canal- and left with a peace lily and another plant whose name I can no longer remember. Currently, my plants are thriving. In fact, my second lily is about to open! This is a huge step for me. Ever since I returned to my apartment with my new friends, my roommate has developed an obsession with carnivorous plants. He now spends quite a bit of time staring into his terrarium, filled with plants he bought from this store (upon my recommendation). I miss him... We're currently considering turning our apartment into a jungle. Think Jumanji...sans Robin Williams covered in fake hair. I think it would work considering we're already growing mold because we have such poor ventilation. That aside, this place is great- even if you're looking to just get a high from all of the light. I heard about this place when I was asking around at the Ballard farmers market for a shop to re-stock my terrarium. I did find ample air plants and cactuses of various sizes, more than enough to fill my small terrarium. In fact, I even picked up more supplies (glass teardrop container, ceramics, moss, and sand) to create a new terrarium for my friend as a gift. By no means am I a plant expert, but I was really happy with the variety that they had here. It also felt like a local, family store that I am happy to support. Prices were really reasonable too (a huge variety of air plants ranging from $1-5). I would highly recommend checking this place out for your terrarium needs! read more

3 stars for lighting supplies I originally stopped by here in search of some lighting equipment for my plants. They had a decent selection, including various reflectors and fluorescent light kits, but did not have what I was looking for -- equipment for HID lights (maybe they were there, but I just missed it). I was hoping to check out different ballasts/hoods/reflectors in person to see how they could be set up in my apartment. 5 stars for the carnivorous plants The Indoor Sun Shoppe has a really great selection of carnivorous plants including venus fly traps, various types of pitcher plants, and sundews -- all being grown under T5 fluorescent fixtures. I've been to a few nurseries in the area and I was quite impressed by the selection over here. Many of the plants were also fairly mature, which is a good thing since they're a little bit hardier than the younger plants...especially if you're still trying to find the right set up to grow them. In terms of the plants, one unique aspect about this place was that they sold hanging pitcher plants. I haven't been able to find them at too many places, so if you're interested hit up the Indoor Sun Shoppe. read more

This place was an unexpected find; we walked by from our parking spot on our way to Theo Chocolate. As someone who is a do-it-yourselfer who knows their way around a Lowe's, I was a bit aghast at the ridiculously expensive grow light setups they have. I was curious enough to do a little research, and, for those products, they are right in the sweet spot. Go figure. The selection of grow-light setups (different sizes from half a bookshelf to tanning bed size) is impressive, and the selection of bits and pieces for your indoor gardening or growing operation (tomatoes, yeah, it just be tomatoes) is all there. Some very interesting plants, from staghorn ferns to carnivorous plants to orchids (but with some common houseplants like asparagus ferns) are all bathed in warm, bright, artificial light. If I lived in Seattle, I'd be dropping by here REALLY OFTEN just to soak up some artificial sun. And, of course, they sell light boxes, and have an area set up where you can try them out. As it so happened, I needed something to combat the scale that has accosted my Meyer Lemon tree, and I found their prices to be reasonable, and the selection of products impressive. While I chose what I needed without help, the staff were available, and helped a number of other people with questions ranging from the n00b gardener to the semi-professional. I found it amusing that the place apparently used to be a large, giant, walk in fridge. The entire building. Look at the doors, and look at the ceiling next time. It's a large walk in cooler. Huh. Very cool little garden shop off the beaten path in Fremont. I was looking for some random bug eating plants and found this placed stocked a pretty sweet supply of the kind. I have a thing for Venus Fly Traps. Admist everything else the place is stocked with beautiful orchids, other random plants, succelents, and quirky gardening essentials. I would say most are reasonably priced, but I'm not an avid gardner so what's cheap vs. expensive can range. The staff help is a whole nother story. While I had fun looking about the store, the two employees stayed hidden behind the counter munching on dinner. I had to go up to ask for assistance with was slightly annoying. I came here only for things related to succulents and orchids. **PRICE** 5/5 I came here to purchase some materials to make my own soil mix for my succulents and was pleasantly surprised by the store. They not only had what I needed, but they had it for an amazing price (cheaper than anything I've seen on threads about succulents, Amazon, and Home Depot). I bought a bag of Perlite and a big bag full (maybe 2 gallons?) worth of gravel (it's self-serve bulk) for only ~$8! What a steal. Their succulents are also very reasonably priced - you can find succulents here for no more than a couple bucks. **SELECTION** 3.5/5 I was surprised by their selection of plants. There was a pretty good variety of Tillandsias, cacti, and various other plants and succulents. But remember, this is not a plant store. You will not find everything that you are looking for here. However, that being said, for someone who is open to purchasing any type of succulent, this is a great place for you to get started. It's not the greatest that I've ever seen (see Cactus Jungle - Berkeley, CA), but it's got one of the best selections in Seattle that I've been to, this including Swanson's. They also have some planters and glass orbs for terranium making, both are small selections and I've seen cheaper glass orbs (for Tillansias) and clear glass planters on Amazon. **SERVICE** 5/5 The people who work here are also really helpful and nice. I really like this place. The plants here are very healthy and well cared for by the employees, and they have a decent selection of everything you need to get your indoor tropical paradise started. I recently went in desperate to help my recent spider mite infestation and would have bought anything they recommended. This was a fantastic/cute store. I randomly walked in because I was in the neighborhood. I was blown away by this little shop because a) the plants are actually very affordable b) the staff was very helpful. The shop is very green inside and beautiful. I wanted to make a terrarium so I asked the staff to teach me on how to create one. The guy was super nice. He was not condescending at all since I knew absolutely nothing about how to make one or what to put inside. He patiently taught me on what I needed and literally showed me how simple it was to create one. He also didn't try to hard sale me on any expensive plants. Instead, he just let me wander around where I felt no pressure to buy anything. I ended up buying a cactus and some succulents along with cactus dirt and the terrarium glass. They have a big selection of plants and products, and from the look of things, it seems that they carry organic and natural products whenever possible.
