I am placing this review under this heading although I believe the true name of the business is "Eastern Sierra Ice Cream." To say this Ice cream is " good" is not enough. This is true old fashioned ice cream made with real ingredients. You can taste how real the ingredients are in every bite as the flavors dance together on your tongue. We spoke with the gentleman that owns the shop. He spoke to us about where he gets the cream, and some of the ingredients. They really make sure they use good products. You won't find emulsifiers, and guar gum here! The care and attention to making a superior product like this is hard to find. I shared my need for clean food, and my appreciation for what he and his wife create with the gentleman. Truly an Art! Went a couple of weeks ago. When you walk in, you are greeted right away. Stay to your right if you want to try something or get something packed. The menu or offerings are also outside if you want to see what they have and what ingredients are in the concoctions. If you just want some vegan pre-packed stuff, you can just ask at the register on the left instead of waiting for the right side. I got the chai and the orange spice. Both were delicious, but both were also chalky. I would definitely come here again. On another trip, I had the pineapple whip and the apricot. The best ice cream around! Such a charming spot inside and out. They make their ice cream (fresh weekly) from quality ingredients. No fructose corn syrup ever. I never feel guilty giving it to my Til one. She also loves to count how many gnomes she can find in the gnome garden outside. We've stopped in here a few times while passing through town and I thoroughly enjoy their vegan ice cream. They make everything in house and have amazing sounding flavors, and at least one vegan option at all times (it's on the sweeter side) and the texture is perfect. It's a small and older shop but they have a clean restroom and plenty of seating. I love their pineapple and the peach is also delicious. The service is friendly enough, but depending on the day: sometimes awkward and leans towards *unawareness of what is appropriate* conversation. Like the owner tries to figure out who you are when you walk in and if he can't he will ask some questions, then calculates how to talk to you. Would easily and readily recommend stopping here for some ice cream! It was over 90 degrees and about 3pm on a Sunday afternoon when we came by. There wasn't much of a line, and we got to try a couple of flavors before landing on their Black Rock and The Drive Home flavors for our two scoops ($7). We also got a doggy scoop ($1) for our dog, which was a frozen mixture of banana, yogurt, and peanut butter. First, our dog loved his scoop! It was nice to be able to treat him to something tasty and cold, too. We got to chill together on the covered outdoor patio and enjoy our treats! Next, the Black Rock was a nice chocolate ice cream with generous, moist chunks of brownie and chocolate chips. The cinnamon flavor is pretty light - my partner didn't even notice it was in there (he doesn't usually like cinnamon, so that wasn't a bad thing!). The Drive Home was a nice, creamy coffee ice cream. A super tasty, safe choice for coffee-lovers! Overall, the ice cream here is super smooth, creamy, and tasty! The textures and flavors were perfect, though you'll have to enjoy it pretty quickly when you're out in the summer heat (not that that would be difficult lol). It seems that every town, big or small, along 395 has its own special must visit place that tempts one to pull over and let the dust settle. In Bishop, it's Mahogany Smoked Meats, and in Independence, it's Indy Place for the creamist of creamy ice cream. This spot serves up some unusual ice cream flavors, and the owners are as colorful as the decor. The only vanilla flavor on the menu is, well, vanilla! The others are concoctions of various fruits, pies, and who knows what other desserts make their way into the kitchen. Whatever it may be, you can bet that the mad scientists will whip it into a delectable treat to stuff into a cone. You're going to love the ice cream here. A couple of scoops should just about hit the spot and send you happily on your way across the vast expanse of the Eastern Sierra. Quick Tip: The owners are very cool. Yall we went back to Bishop in October and luckily got them on their last weekend open for the season! Great homemade ice cream and great service. The owner and his wife are super nice folks and were a pleasure to talk to about the local attractions and history of the town. A must-do if you're passing through on your way to Mammoth or Lake Tahoe. Just be sure that you coordinate your itinerary/this stop between late March/early April and late October when they are open for business. Additionally, they are closed on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to make their fresh ice cream per the owner. Our favorites were the blackberry blarney and the pistachio. read more

This place is a must stop on our annual camping trip. Judging from the conversation around me in line last time I visited, a lot of others feel the same. The ice cream is fantastic with a varied and creative selection. I really appreciate that they have vegan ice cream as well. The owners take time with each customer and you can tell the orders are prepared with care. When I was there last, the owner kindly took the time to discuss mint with a young boy who couldn't decide on his flavor. It's a charming setting with plenty of outdoor seating and even has a clean, spacious restroom for customers. Easy parking on side streets. They also sell cookies (which look great, but I've never had any room left after my ice cream). I only wish they were open more days of the week! That's some dedication! This place is about as quaint as it gets -- whimsical and fun too. Hard to believe it used to be a law office! If you're into gourmet ice cream, this is the place for you. This is ultra premium ice cream, similar to Van Leeuwen in LA or McConnells in Santa Barbara -- we are talking 16% milk fat creaminess with ultra premium ingredients. Every had root beer ice cream? I typically only want something with chocolate, but I was adventurous today and tried something called summer salad. It's strawberries and the balsamic vinegar. We were excited to stop by this ice cream shop. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed with our visit. We walked into the store and you would have thought two lepers entered. There was a older gentleman talking with a couple of people. He saw us, but didn't smile or greet us. He didn't even bother saying, "someone will be with you shortly." A female employee came out and looked like she was annoyed to have to serve us. Neither of the store employees were friendly with us. The ice cream was okay. Visiting from the Bay Area (: Stopped by this cute little place for something cold after visiting an abandoned mining cave. We received friendly and attentive service, you order at the register and if you ordered ice cream you tell the person behind the ice cream counter what you got. My friends got scoops of ice cream, most of them tried the pina naranjajajaja and loved it. I wanted something to drink but also ice cream, I was feeling adventurous and tried one of their blueberry Sparkles drink and I was delighted with it, it was very refreshing. Plenty of seating outside the shop with shade to enjoy your treat. Their bathroom was one of the cleanest bathrooms I have ever stepped in, you can really tell how well a business is managed by taking a look at their bathroom. I wish I took photos but I just wanted to live in the moment with my yummy drink. Definitely will stop by again when going down the 395! read more

When I came off the JMT in 2020 for a resupply at the Mt. Williamson, they told me that the best ice cream in CA was down the road. An ice cream devotee, I had to check it out. Not only were they right, I am now a disciple. Their Cherry Monzo puts my buddies Ben & Jerry to shame. (In 2020, it was called CH to 4th Power.) Perfect tart cherries with shards of hand-rolled chocolate... Well, I had three scoops! And then... Went back before closing to get another two!! (Hiker hunger is a real thing, y'all). I thought about that ice cream for the rest of the JMT. And when I came back the next year, it was the fuel in my brain that got me up those passes... The ice cream at the end of the trail. No cherry monzo in rotation when I was there in 2021 (the other flavors are incredible as well - shout out to their mint chip and coffee) but... Stopping by on the way back home from this year's trip, BEHOLD! My hiking prayers were answered! We stumbled upon this place last year on our way back from a backpacking trip and it was unforgettable. We returned the other week and it lived up to expectations. The Indy Place gets 5 stars because it serves a plethora of unique HOMEMADE ice cream flavors that are delicious! Extra points for a great bathroom rest stop.
