I visited Schats on a solo road trip up the 395 to celebrate my birthday. I had heard much about this famous bakery, from its sheepherder sandwiches to the pull apart sweet breads, this bakery certainly did not disappoint. Food: When you first walk in, the impression you get with Schats is "Wow". And wowed you shall be because the whole store is absolutely stacked with breads, cookies, savory loaves, twists, cakes, pastries, and baked goods of all shapes, sizes, and flavorful persuasion. I came in prepared however, determined to try a half order each if their beef and turkey sandwiches, and decided to treat myself to some of the sweet baked goods from their extensive sweets section. While I was disappointed by the amount of meat on my sandwiches, I marveled at the flavor and textural cohesion unified in the simple sandwiches. What looks like a basic veggie-mayo-meat quickly becomes a homey culinary experience with the light and fluffy yet hearty sheepherder bread. Where you might expect an overwhelming mouthful of veg (thanks to the substantial sprouts), I'm met with a cohesive bite of delicate fresh flavors that meld together in a delightful sandwich. Safe to say, this is a sandwich sandwich. Not something stacked between bread, but a thoughtful creation that is greater than the sum of its parts. A true sandwich. The complimentary pickle spears and cookie that comes with your sandwich order is a perfect pairing, and I'd highly recommend these sandwiches if youve never tried them! I also got the Apple fritter, grandma cinnamon roll, old fashioned bar, and the apple strudel thing for my desserts to try (not at once). Each had a lovely texture. I disapprove of donuts that don't retain their moisture and texture, but Schats delivers on both marks especially for their old fashioned and Apple fritter donuts which retain a moist fluffy interior with the right amount of crisp. They are also not too heavy, a high mark in my book. The cinnamon roll was delightful with just the right amount of cinnamon and walnuts, the apple strudel thing was mildly disappointing however as the dough was overly dense and difficult to cut/bite into without squeezing out all the filling. Service: Schats staff are friendly, but this is an in and out institution. With the reputation it has, it's no surprise that things are structured to move quickly as there are a constant stream of customers flowing. Even so, staff are happy to answer questions and chat if they have a moment! They made me feel welcome despite being a clear tourist. Ambiance: Schats has a lovely charm to the interior and exterior. It is reminiscent of what I imagine a rustic German/european bakery would look and feel like, and dining at the outdoor seating or perusing the bakeries stacked displays and carts is a wonderfully charming experience. Highly recommend for a fun and lighthearted break that foodies, families, friends will love. Especially as you travel the 395! Overall 5/5 a perfect experience to add onto your 395 itinerary. The bakery of note to stop along the 395 route to Northern Cali. Why? Because it's got some really good stuff, that's why. Things to buy here for sure while you're there: - Pull Apart Bread - 8/10: different variations, but all sweet, gooey, decadent. It's like the traditional cinnamon roll's raunchy cousin. - Pastrami sandwich - 10/10: good lord this is delicious. Easily top 5 sandwiches I've ever had. Hefty and filling for sure. The meat isn't your run-of-the-mill, dry, salty pastrami that you'll get at your local deli. They use premium naval cuts that are lightly seasoned, juicy, fatty, and super tender. The Swiss is also soft and spongy, very similar to mozzarella. You'd be satisfied just eating this by itself. And the rye bread is artisinal elite level, as expected. Freshly baked and super soft. So damn good I nearly SCHAT my pants!! - Original Sheepherder Bread - 8.5/10: 100-plus year-old recipe. Tried and true. Great for sandwiches or even just toasted with whatever spread that floats your boat. Versatile and superb. Another thing to note: this place is fully staffed and they have their stuff together. On our way from Orange County to Mono Lake and Lake Tahoe, we stopped at Erick Schat's Bakkery as Yelp rated it highly. The building with its blue awnings and decor is charming, but the baked goods (loaf cakes, monkey bread, cookies, etc) didn't look appetizing. The majority of the baked goods looked sloppy, oily and unremarkable. The cookies looked dry. The sandwiches didn't look appetizing. There's a refrigerator that has the same sandwiches (boxed and made that day) that you can grab and pay for immediately in lieu of standing in a long line just to order and watch staff put the same kinds of sandwiches together. We got a few items to go (strawberry éclaire, carrot cake and cheese bread) and ate at the BBQ place across the street. read more

This bakery has been around for as long as I can remember. As a kid I remember us getting one of their famous sourdough breads but never remember it being so crazy busy. Years later I'm sure it's gotten busier due to the influx of people. It now takes a min to find parking in the small parking lot. The inside is always busy and I find myself pushing through crowds. My favorite is the chili cheese bread. They also have rolls, lots of pastries, drinks and deli sandwiches. There are tables out front to sit at. This place is very popular so we thought to give it a try since we were driving through the area. It was Sunday and it was packed! There was a huge line everywhere and when we got in it was hard to move around. Service was fast though for the amount of customers. They have a lot of options for breads, donuts, and desserts. We were on the way back from Mammoth Mountain and this place is a must stop for those who love fresh baked goods! As soon as you walk into the store, you feel a sense of pleasantry. The store's aroma of all the fresh breads and pastries were like a dream. There were lots of people in there even near closing time. There are aisles filled with breads, cakes, cookies, candies, etc. There are even sandwiches but we went a little too late that the sandwich bar was closed. You walk around and grab what you want before getting in line to pay. There are two or three pay areas - they accept Tap to Pay! We have driven by this place many times going to visit family in Big Bear. We were told by at least two family members we needed to stop there on our way. We did, and bought some baked goods which were amazing. I ordered a turkey club on sourdough and it was fresh and delicious. I will definitely stop here again. Great spot in the middle of town. Enjoy a fresh sandwich people watching as this is on Main Street, right across from the park. Rows and rows of fresh baked goods. Order at the counter and take your goodies . Plenty of sweet treats, breads, and other delights to choose from. The breads are so fresh! Loved their roast beef sandwich and Mac salad! Wow, what a place -- really impressive. I picked up two donuts and they were excellent. I also bought a loaf of sourdough bread that was incredibly fresh when I got it, and somehow it tasted even better over the next few days. They have so many tempting bakery items that it was hard not to leave with a lot more. The only thing I probably wouldn't buy again was the provolone cheese. The quality didn't seem very good to me -- it was rubbery and didn't really taste like provolone. But their baked goods are definitely where they shine. read more

Worth the 5 hour drive! I first visited Erick Schat's over 20 years ago when I had moved to Nevada and would drive up the 395 from San Diego. It was a great spot to stop and grab snacks. My sister and I did a small road trip with my son and we wanted to bring him to this bakery. It holds memories for us and we wanted to share those memories with him. The bakery is the same as I remembered. The bread is made fresh and is amazing. I love that they offer samples so you can try different breads throughout the bakery. The cheese bread and the sheepherder's are staples and absolutely fantastic. My new favorite was the cranberry white chocolate. OMG, this bread is heavenly! Make sure you pick up a loaf, it's great with just butter. My son fell in love with the chocolate chip loaf cake, he finished the entire loaf and asked me the next weekend to drive back up to Bishop to get more of the cake. It really was that good. All of the items are wonderful and the staff are great and friendly. This is bakery should be on anyone's list of stops to make when going up or down 395. read more

Place is pretty crowded and I see why. Definitely stop there if you are in the area to get some amazing bread and food! It's always fun to stop here on our way up or down from Mammoth. They need to expand this location and make it larger to accommodate all the bodies that come thru especially on the weekends it's bumper to bumper traffic in there! For those that are claustrophobic or have health issues probably not the best to come in during peak hours! As for the food everything has been solid thus far. I've tried their sandwiches, breads, and cookies over the years since 1994 and they are all baked fresh out of the oven! They do have a clearance section in the back by the bathrooms for day old stuff or cracked cookies. We have gotten stuff back there and just reheat them with no problems! They do have another indoor/outdoor seating area to the left of the main building if you can't find any space in the main area. If you have pets go across the street to the park and relieve them there with beautiful ducks wading by. I grabbed some heart-shaped dark chocolate cookies on my way down this time and it was a hit with all my friends back home. $22 for a tray kinda steep but well worth it for large unprocessed cookies! read more

We camp at Big Pine Creek every year and always make it a point to stop in Bishop and pick up some goodies here. There's a Tesla Supercharger close by on Warren Street, so we usually just walk over while we wait for the car to charge. I usually come during the summer and it's always packed but it actually was not too bad over the weekend. This year's haul included their raisin bread, olive focaccia, stroopwafel and some churros. Everything was delicious! They have all kinds of bread, cheese, pastries, a deli, gelato... pretty much everything you could want! They've also expanded so now you can sit down and eat next door and there's a restroom there too! The staff are always friendly, helpful, and quick even when the line is long. This is ALWAYS a must-visit whenever we're roadtripping. Erick Schat's is a Dutch Bakery located in a small town called Bishop. It's usually on the way up to Mammoth if you're traveling that way! They've got baked goods galore, fresh sandwiches and soups, and so. much. MORE! The whole place just feels like a warm hug. Everything is locally sourced, owned, and made. We always get one of their deli sandwiches to share (their portion sizes are extremely generous) and a couple dozen baked goods as gifts for loved ones. Erick's Bakkery was recommended by a friend of my wife. We decided to stop by on the way back from our trip, and so glad that we did! Luckily for us ,it wasn't too crowded as we stopped by Thursday morning, so parking was great and lines were not too long. As soon as you enter, you are greeted with hundreds of packaged sweets and breads, what a paradise to those that love carbs. I ordered a turkey club sandwich and my wife ordered a BLT with avocado. Ofcourse, we also cannot leave without taking a few pastries with us :) My sandwich was delicious and not to heavy, the bread was fluffy, the turkey was thickly carved, the avocado was noticeably present and the tomato and lettuce were a nice touch, one side had mustard and the other mayo. I was pleasantly surprised and the sandwich did not disappoint. My wife's sandwich was identical but with bacon instead of. Turkey. As far as the pastries, they were good, they are very light and not to sweet, so if your looking for krispykreme, this is not it for you. I would go here for their bread alone! Everything they make and offer is delicious, but waiting in the busy chaos is worth it for the bread. All their bread is magical but I had their rosemary sourdough during my most recent visit and it was just perfect. Every slice was heaven. I ordered an almond pastry and a white chocolate drink with two shots as well. The almond pastry was fluffy, sweet, and delectable. Would order this again! The white chocolate drink with shots wasn't my favorite as I wanted more of a coffee taste, but that's on me as I should have ordered a latte with the syrup instead. Everything else was delicious! I picked up the mushroom focaccia, garlic bread, green olive tapenade, and roasted garlic jam -- aka the lineup of things that will absolutely ruin my self-control tonight. What an adorable bakery with cute Dutch charm! I was amazed by the WIDE SELECTION of bread types and baked goods, from breads to pastries to loaves to bear claws to cookies. I loved the little Dutch clogs as decor hanging from the ceilings. Their brand advertises themselves as "Home of the Original Sheepherder Bread", so obviously had to try it. Stopped by this famous bakery on the way to Mammoth Lake. Such a fun vibe inside, and lots of free samples of breads hidden among the bread stacks. Breads and cookies are very nice! We ordered: - pastrami sandwich: Loved every bite of this, highly highly recommend. Not too salty and very soft pastrami cuts. - turkey sandwich: very refreshing, the bread is really nice as well - roast beef sandwich: very fresh! Had to take large bites bc of how much filling there was. Also a big fan of the free pecan cookies that came with each sandwich. We're only here a couple days but will be back for sure. read more

Stopped into Eric's today ordered the Number 1 sandwich, whole for 14.95 Sandwich was made up mostly of lettuce and sprouts and 1/8 inch slice of a side of a turkey folder over to make it look large. When you finally got down to a little bit of turkey and bread, it was good. The bread is excellent. I know some say this is a tourist trap BUT we loved our quick stop on a recent road trip. We picked up a couple sandwiches made on their "famous" bread. They were VERY big and you can easily split one. My hubs did the Mule Kicker and I did the turkey salad, both delicious. I could not resist the sweet side where I grabbed an apple strudel and some almond cookies. I seriously could have bought one of everything with my massive sweet tooth. Staff was really warm and friendly, and tossed in a couple complimentary cookies to go with our sandwiches. If you're ever passing through Bishop, Ca. Do yourself a favor a stop at Erick Schat's bakery. This is an impressive find and worth the time to wait in line for one of their handmade sandwiches. It smelled heavenly and the lines coming in were as long for the sandwiches as they were for their pastry counter. It was such an impressive spread. I will tell you, it's worth every carb and take a pullaway bread home or for the car. The Apple was delicious. The ingredients are simple! This area is filled with beautiful parks and outdoors that this bakery offers everything you could ever search for. Buy lunch here and have a picnic a few minutes down the street or on their popular patio. We had a mule kick, turkey and cheese, ham and cheese and a veggie sandwich, a 3pk of cheese bagels, and an apple pullapart. We didn't have time to stand in line for pastries, but told ourselves we'd stop on the way home. Their case was clearing out quickly. Everyone working was working as fast as they could to get us all on our way. Parking is a mess, but we survived it. Most of Ca is marked for economy cars. Just be mindful and careful as you enter their lot located behind especially if you're in an suv or truck. This place is impressive! I can't wait to stop in again on the way home and on my next road trip. This is going to be a regular stop for my family.
