Erick's Bakkery was recommended by a friend of my wife. We decided to stop by on the way back from our trip, and so glad that we did! Luckily for us ,it wasn't too crowded as we stopped by Thursday morning, so parking was great and lines were not too long. As soon as you enter, you are greeted with hundreds of packaged sweets and breads, what a paradise to those that love carbs. I ordered a turkey club sandwich and my wife ordered a BLT with avocado. Ofcourse, we also cannot leave without taking a few pastries with us :) My sandwich was delicious and not to heavy, the bread was fluffy, the turkey was thickly carved, the avocado was noticeably present and the tomato and lettuce were a nice touch, one side had mustard and the other mayo. I was pleasantly surprised and the sandwich did not disappoint. My wife's sandwich was identical but with bacon instead of. Turkey. As far as the pastries, they were good, they are very light and not to sweet, so if your looking for krispykreme, this is not it for you. Overall, I'm glad this place was recommended and will definitely go back whenever we take a drive back up north! read more

Wow, what a place -- really impressive. I picked up two donuts and they were excellent. I also bought a loaf of sourdough bread that was incredibly fresh when I got it, and somehow it tasted even better over the next few days. They have so many tempting bakery items that it was hard not to leave with a lot more. The only thing I probably wouldn't buy again was the provolone cheese. The quality didn't seem very good to me -- it was rubbery and didn't really taste like provolone. But their baked goods are definitely where they shine. read more

Favorite place to stop on our way home from mammoth! They have the best breads and pastries

I know some say this is a tourist trap BUT we loved our quick stop on a recent road trip. We picked up a couple sandwiches made on their "famous" bread. They were VERY big and you can easily split one. My hubs did the Mule Kicker and I did the turkey salad, both delicious. I could not resist the sweet side where I grabbed an apple strudel and some almond cookies. I seriously could have bought one of everything with my massive sweet tooth. Staff was really warm and friendly, and tossed in a couple complimentary cookies to go with our sandwiches. They have plenty of seating outdoors and indoors if you pop across the drive to their adjacent building. read more

We were on the way back from Mammoth Mountain and this place is a must stop for those who love fresh baked goods! As soon as you walk into the store, you feel a sense of pleasantry. The store's aroma of all the fresh breads and pastries were like a dream. There were lots of people in there even near closing time. There are aisles filled with breads, cakes, cookies, candies, etc. There are even sandwiches but we went a little too late that the sandwich bar was closed. You walk around and grab what you want before getting in line to pay. There are two or three pay areas - they accept Tap to Pay! We camp at Big Pine Creek every year and always make it a point to stop in Bishop and pick up some goodies here. There's a Tesla Supercharger close by on Warren Street, so we usually just walk over while we wait for the car to charge. I usually come during the summer and it's always packed but it actually was not too bad over the weekend. This year's haul included their raisin bread, olive focaccia, stroopwafel and some churros. Everything was delicious! They have all kinds of bread, cheese, pastries, a deli, gelato... pretty much everything you could want! They've also expanded so now you can sit down and eat next door and there's a restroom there too! The staff are always friendly, helpful, and quick even when the line is long. Worth the 5 hour drive! I first visited Erick Schat's over 20 years ago when I had moved to Nevada and would drive up the 395 from San Diego. It was a great spot to stop and grab snacks. My sister and I did a small road trip with my son and we wanted to bring him to this bakery. It holds memories for us and we wanted to share those memories with him. The bakery is the same as I remembered. The bread is made fresh and is amazing. I love that they offer samples so you can try different breads throughout the bakery. The cheese bread and the sheepherder's are staples and absolutely fantastic. My new favorite was the cranberry white chocolate. OMG, this bread is heavenly! Make sure you pick up a loaf, it's great with just butter. My son fell in love with the chocolate chip loaf cake, he finished the entire loaf and asked me the next weekend to drive back up to Bishop to get more of the cake. It really was that good. All of the items are wonderful and the staff are great and friendly. This is bakery should be on anyone's list of stops to make when going up or down 395. read more

It's always fun to stop here on our way up or down from Mammoth. They need to expand this location and make it larger to accommodate all the bodies that come thru especially on the weekends it's bumper to bumper traffic in there! For those that are claustrophobic or have health issues probably not the best to come in during peak hours! As for the food everything has been solid thus far. I've tried their sandwiches, breads, and cookies over the years since 1994 and they are all baked fresh out of the oven! They do have a clearance section in the back by the bathrooms for day old stuff or cracked cookies. We have gotten stuff back there and just reheat them with no problems! They do have another indoor/outdoor seating area to the left of the main building if you can't find any space in the main area. If you have pets go across the street to the park and relieve them there with beautiful ducks wading by. I grabbed some heart-shaped dark chocolate cookies on my way down this time and it was a hit with all my friends back home. $22 for a tray kinda steep but well worth it for large unprocessed cookies! read more

All their bread is magical but I had their rosemary sourdough during my most recent visit and it was just perfect. Every slice was heaven. I ordered an almond pastry and a white chocolate drink with two shots as well. The almond pastry was fluffy, sweet, and delectable. Would order this again! Stopped into Eric's today ordered the Number 1 sandwich, whole for 14.95 Sandwich was made up mostly of lettuce and sprouts and 1/8 inch slice of a side of a turkey folder over to make it look large. Finally stopped by after hearing so many people hype this place up, and honestly... I get it now. What an adorable bakery with cute Dutch charm! I was amazed by the WIDE SELECTION of bread types and baked goods, from breads to pastries to loaves to bear claws to cookies. I loved the little Dutch clogs as decor hanging from the ceilings. Their brand advertises themselves as "Home of the Original Sheepherder Bread", so obviously had to try it. Stopped by this famous bakery on the way to Mammoth Lake. Such a fun vibe inside, and lots of free samples of breads hidden among the bread stacks. Breads and cookies are very nice! We ordered: - pastrami sandwich: Loved every bite of this, highly highly recommend. Not too salty and very soft pastrami cuts. - turkey sandwich: very refreshing, the bread is really nice as well - roast beef sandwich: very fresh! We love this place! So many goodies to get from here it's almost overwhelming. We usually stopped by on our way through town but this time we stayed in bishop and was able to come multiple times. This made it easier to browse. The sandwich deli and potato salad is a must. The pull away bread is one of my now favorites. Cute nick knacks to buy (tulip bell, wooden shoes). We stop here any time we're traveling through Bishop. The Sandwhiches are really good, but there is often a line. This time we decided to skip it, but went over to the Bakery side and got some Bear Claws. We also got Coffee, which with 4 more hours to go on our trip, is just what we needed. The store employees were so nice and friendly...It was hard to choose what to take specially that there were so many options...we got cinnamon pullaway handmade bread and as its famous in tictoc its imported dutch cinnamon... very delicious... We stayed in Bishop for a snowboarding trip in Mammoth. Started our day right here. The moment we walked in it felt like we stumbled into a cozy mom and pop Dutch bakery! The bakery is split into pastries/donuts/drinks, fresh breads, and a sandwich bar (opens at 8:30). Any pastry you can think of, they have it! Bear claws, pound cakes, hand cut cookies of every kind... I wanted to try everything but ultimately left with a haul of their egg croissant, jalapeno ham and cheese croissant, turkey sandwich, donut holes, their OG Sheperd bread and their OG Chili Cheese bread. The bread is so crispy and crackly, highly recommend you leave with a loaf or two. Can't wait to come back during our next Mammoth trip! read more

If you're ever passing through Bishop, Ca. Do yourself a favor a stop at Erick Schat's bakery. This is an impressive find and worth the time to wait in line for one of their handmade sandwiches. It smelled heavenly and the lines coming in were as long for the sandwiches as they were for their pastry counter. It was such an impressive spread. I will tell you, it's worth every carb and take a pullaway bread home or for the car. The Apple was delicious. The ingredients are simple! This area is filled with beautiful parks and outdoors that this bakery offers everything you could ever search for. Buy lunch here and have a picnic a few minutes down the street or on their popular patio. We had a mule kick, turkey and cheese, ham and cheese and a veggie sandwich, a 3pk of cheese bagels, and an apple pullapart. We didn't have time to stand in line for pastries, but told ourselves we'd stop on the way home. Their case was clearing out quickly. Everyone working was working as fast as they could to get us all on our way. Parking is a mess, but we survived it. Most of Ca is marked for economy cars. Just be mindful and careful as you enter their lot located behind especially if you're in an suv or truck. This place is impressive! I can't wait to stop in again on the way home and on my next road trip. This is going to be a regular stop for my family. Brief stop. Brief review. We popped in for a few snacks for the road at the infamous bakery. They were quite busy on a hot labor day but even so lines moved pretty quickly. Staff is very friendly and efficient. It can be a bit overwhelming with the amount of items and choices. Their pastry case is very impressive. I couldn't resist getting one of the too cute marzipans. i've been coming to schat's for years and it's a must whenever we pass through on the way to mammoth or lake tahoe. depending on the day of the week or even the season you're coming to visit, schat's can be extremely busy where it's body to body inside the store or it could also be very calm and less crowded. i've experienced both and i feel the staff have always kept up with great hospitality and efficiency. luckily now they accept tap as before i believe you'd need your physical card to pay. parking can also be quite tricky as their parking lot is very limited, but the carl's jr right across the street seem to have no problem with people parking in their lot. they have both a deli and bakery and honestly you can't go wrong with anything you purchase there. i've personally gone back several times for their hot pastrami sandwich (huge portion with fatty, tender pastrami and all the right accompaniments), their "stonewall kitchen" spreads/sauces, freshly made bread of course, and the occasional pastries (i'm not a big sweets fan) but i have friends that love their pastries. i got to try some of their coffee drinks as well and while their flavors were definitely good, they were all extremely sweet so id recommend asking for less sugar/syrup. read more

My coworker and I stopped by twice on our trip - once for lunch and again the next morning to pick up some items to bring home. Lunch was busy (even at 1pm) but the sandwich/deli line moved quickly. I'd suggest being ready for your order when you get called up to the next available staff member. I opted for the BBQ turkey sandwich with a chili cheese (jalapeño cheese) bun. The order comes with a pickle spear, a scoop of coleslaw, and a cookie. Bonus tip: At the time of our visit in September 2025, there is additional indoor seating available in the building right next door. The space was super clean and air conditioned, with plenty of tables and seating to enjoy your food. Not sure if people didn't know or just preferred to eat at the outdoor tables, but the indoor seating was pretty empty the entire time we were there. There's even a separate restroom. On our return trip to buy goodies for home, we helped ourselves some samples and filled up our baskets with a variety of bread and cookies. Family and friends back home enjoyed the haul! read more

Definitely recommend the pastrami sandwich!! Con: they don't toast the bread which sucks because I love my bread toasted and the OG Beef Jerky was overly salted, you can't taste the beef. Am not sure if it's just the batch I got but too much salt, unable to consume. Back to the sandwich, it took five-six minutes for them to assemble in front of me upon ordering. The prices were reasonable for the quality and quantity. If you ever had Langers in LA, you would know what I am talking about when I say this comes close to their sandwich! I also took home a loaf of SF Sourdough bread and Salami to make some sando at home. I am in love with this place!!
