So the whole time I was going I should have been checking in here oh welps. So at first I thought he was a douche. He was mean and so unapproachable. Then I realized that is his approach at getting ppl to work out. No coddling, do the work, push yourself. Well.. this is awkward. The cover photo is of the instructor for the class I took... and well, I wasn't expecting that much... muscle. Whoops... excuse my distraction. Anyhow... I checked out Infighting Shape after they offered an amazing deal on Groupon. I think it may have been $49 for 10 classes or something like that. I wasn't going to miss out on it. I was sort of meh about the boxing class offered, but the Combat Cardio class sounded very interesting, so I signed up. I'm unsure about the affiliation between Infighting and Complete Body... but the class was at Complete Body and it's a very well-equiped gym. Lots of very fit (and great looking) male trainers... everywhere. And yea, workout stuff too. Distracted again. The class itself is great. I must admit that it seemed a bit disorganized, but I think it was a function of so many newcomers taking advantage of the Groupon. We started out with drills involving wall sits, pushups, and some type of throwing motion with kettle weights. Like, I wanted to give up almost instantly. But the instructor (guy in the pic) has a way of speaking in the right tone to keep you moving and motivated. Next we learned about Olympic lifting and the instructor gave us one and one attention, critiquing our form and providing guidance. Next we did a series of circuits that involved some type of martial arts, mountain climbers, scary jumps onto elevated surfaces, high knees and some motion that I wasn't coordinated enough to do without the instructor snickering at me (lightheartedly, of course). This is definitely not the type of exercise I'm used to. I'm more, laying on a mat in a pilates class doing minimal movements and getting a good workout. This is like tons of lifting and exertion. It was an excellent change of pace. Most of the participants were newcomers and the instructor did a great job of keeping people motivated and being accomodating to varying skill levels. I was sore immediately after the class. Two days later, my arms and back are still sore. The best workout I've gotten in a class setting in a while -- comparable to the aches I feel post a personal training session. Unlike other Groupon fitness deals, I will definitely go back to Infighting Shape!! read more

I think a lot of the reviews on here are BS. People complaining that the concepts behind Crossfit haven't been explained enough, that Coach Ed is an awful coach. If you want to do Crossfit in a proper Crossfit gym, then go join a box for $300 a month and then you can complain about how expensive and competitive it is. (There will always be something to bitch about.) Every single person who joins has to do a fundamentals class, during which he will critique form and explain the moves you'll need to use. The gym is not a proper Crossfit box. It's very small (that's the only reason why I didn't give 5 stars ), but I think he does a good job of making the most of the space for what sometimes can be crowded classes full of people who are just there for the groupon. It's also about 1/3 the price of most boxes in Manhattan and the workouts are just as good. I love Coach Ed! There's no coddling from him but we're not there to be babied or motivated by someone else. We're there to put in work! If I've ever had a question about anything, he's always been very approachable and will tell you what's up/what you need to fix, etc. He just doesn't sugar-coat anything. Anyone who's ever played sports can appreciate that mentality. Come, work hard, go home. If you want someone to motivate you and coddle you through your work out, get a personal trainer. There are also a lot of good regulars in his class that are encouraging to others and awesome to be around. I look forward to going to class there partly because of them, as well. read more

So I just come pleated my first ramp up class and it seems to save gone well. Crossfit is definitely a fun and new way to work out and you will never be board. We went over basic form and procedure today which is good because there apparently is so much to crossfit that it would take up to much time in a session to go over. The instructor was nice and motivating he was eager to answer questions and have good pointers. He even offered people that if they felt they didn't master the ramp up they could take another at no extra cost. Overran I am please with the place. I woke this morning to yet another iteration of Infighting-Shape's now-infamous, forever tainted, and decidedly "...too good to be true" membership sham - oops, I mean "Offer!" - trotted out under the guise of a Groupon Deal as a desperate stab at long forsaken legitimacy. Once again, time to repeat the age-old adage like a mantra... "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably (in this case, definitely) is!" Don't fall for it - or them - even when Groupon is innocently "fronting" for them. Make no mistake; the whole "Groupon thang" is rolled out as a bogus veil of legitimacy - for what is an otherwise unscrupulous, naked, money-grab. Rather than simply "close up shop" and physically disappear like in the days of yore, these 21st Century Internet savvy proprietors "disappear virtually" ...by breaking website links they require you to click on in order to activate your membership; then ignoring your repeated emails; before finally resorting to more sophomoric, "old-school" tactics like ignoring your repeated phone-calls and voicemail messages to their published phone number. Notwithstanding that I meticulously complied with absolutely every last one of their published rules and regulations - a fact reiterated by Groupon representatives themselves - these dolts subjected me to a consumer gauntlet of obstructions, barriers, hurdles, and hassles, to and including: --A Broken, non-functioning website (to which you are directed as A NECESSARY PRECONDITION for activating your membership) --Broken website links (on which you are required to click as A NECESSARY PRECONDITION for activating your membership) --Published business phone number that literally rings off the hook (I verifiably completed not one, but TWO! (2) separate phone calls (and corresponding voicemail messages) to Infighting Shape in a good faith attempt to activate my membership; and none was answered - Ever! - through and including even today's date, more than 6 months after I paid them!) --Business voicemail service "to nowhere" (and, to which no one responds - Ever!) -Business email "to nowhere" (and, to which no one responds - Ever!) I had to enlist live Groupon personnel who - after independently verifying all of the foregoing barriers and breakdowns, to their utter shock and dismay - are STILL working to recover my money - MORE THAN FULL 6 MONTHS AFTER I PAID! I went to this place for 3-4 months last summer. The space is really not good for so many people. I wish he would move to a larger space but who knows the cost for all that. He does not coddle you. He basically shows you what to do and you get it done, however the other people working out with you are your motivation. There's never a moment where others acted uppity or too good to help you out or even throw out some encouraging words if you were struggling. We ALL were. Even those who were in shape. It was really intense and I had the best results in my life. I am thinking of going back as soon as I find the funds. read more

In Fighting Shape is a fantastic program for training in boxing. Not only do you learn the fundamentals of boxing; footwork, combinations and movement but you also get a great workout that will improve strength, power, endurance and speed. The class is run by the creator of this program, Coach Edward who is not only an extremely skilled boxer and martial artist but also a wonderful teacher who will enable you to reach your potential. He is very hands on with each student, giving everyone close personal attention. He is able to see one's areas that need improvement and articulates this in a very constructive way, correcting your form until you have mastered it. The warm-up is challenging and in itself a great workout for getting in shape. It is done to music that gets you moving, assisted by the other coaches who are also really good. You will leave this class each time feely energized, refreshed and in great spirits and ready for the next one. STAY AWAY!!! Your money is better spent somewhere else. I've been dying to try cross fit. I know several people who had amazing transformations with it. I was so excited to see the groupon for this place. So I bought one for myself and my boyfriend, I also got one of my friends to try it as well. I went to class yesterday and took the ramp up then work out of the day after. The instructor is not motivating at all! He really should consider an alternate profession. He spent about 5 minutes teaching everyone the routine then spent the rest of the class in the corner day dreaming. He wasn't going around correcting postures, or making sure you don't injure yourself. The room was insanely small, definitely not meant for cross fit. My boyfriend had knee surgery years ago, and if you've ever injured anything in your life you know that pain is reoccurring. The instructor had the audacity to tell my boyfriend that "it should be healed by now". He is rude, not motivating and you will never see me go back here ever again. I also know that there were several people in the ramp up class that was not happy with their experience. Needless to say I called groupon and got my money back. They were extremely understanding about it so I suggest you all should as well. PS I'm not really much of a complainer and I will usually let things slide (this is actually my first review on Yelp) but it's really dangerous and I hope that no one seriously injures themselves because of the negligence of the instructor. I bought a one-month Groupon for CrossFit. Having done CrossFit at a number of other gyms, as well as worked with a number of trainers and instructors over the years, I know what makes a good class. The room itself is WAY too small for a CrossFit class. With that many weights being thrown around and people that cramped together, it's downright dangerous. The instructor himself was disorganized and the least motivating coach I've ever worked with. He gave almost no instruction beforehand, and spent the class in the corner ignoring all of us. I think the classes are valid in cross fit teachings. I felt great after each class and there were certain exercises I wanted to get better at, I did slowly progress. But, the instructor takes some time to warm up too as I feel he comes off a little aggressive and short tempered. I had moments where I was afraid to ask him for help and there were moments where I did asked and he gladly helped. some days good mood, some days not? I had a groupon for these classes and it was great. But, just not worth the full commitment. read more

This is my first ever yelp review. And rightly so. This place is terrible for Crossfit. The regular personal training might be fine (I wouldn't know) but for the Crossfit classes, this is a terrible space for Crossfit activities. It's small and has wooden floors. The class is completely disorganized. The teacher is AWFUL. He made suggestive comments to some of the "curvier" african american women in the class. He didn't explain anything about the concept of Crossfit, was unorganized and he seems downright unhappy with his life. Sorry bud. I bought a groupon, it says pre-registration is required online but there is no option to enter the groupon online. (shrug) I e-mailed the gym and groupon two days ago, still waiting to hear back. Leave your notions of cardio boxing or tae bo behind! Coach E's classes kicks ass. I have taken several boxing classes over the years, as well as a myriad of other fitness classes. These classes put them all to shame. Was I really working out before? Even if you have never boxed before, you should definitely take this class. I am learning new skills everytime I go-but also getting the hardest workout I have had previously. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to workout hard. What a phenomenal workout! I didn't quite know what to expect when I signed up for the introductory boxing class at InFighting Shape, but it has far exceeded my expectations. If you survive the intense warm up including (but not limited to) jump rope, high knees, pushups, wall sits, box jumps and kettlebells, you'll find yourself throwing and catching 300+ punches by the end of the hour. By the time you reach the end of the class, you WILL be exhausted. I haven't been that sore in a very long time! I was very impressed by the dedication and professionalism of Coach E, Coach Juano, and Coach Thor. They provide detailed explanations and demonstrations of proper stance and the basic punches (jab, hook, and cross). They cater their one-on-one instruction to the skill level of their students, and they make sure to progress the class at a reasonable pace each week. They identify where a student's technique needs improvement and help him/her make the necessary adjustments. All three coaches were willing to stay late after class to review what we had learned and to let me throw some extra punches. InFighting Shape is great for both men and women alike. Whether you're looking to find a knowledgeable boxing instructor or just get a good workout, InFighting Shape has it all. I couldn't recommend it more highly. read more

I have been to many trainers over the years but none that seem to care as much as Edward. He plans his sessions carefully in advance and is fully engaged in every second of the workout to maximize its impact. After three years, he still surprises me every session, keeping me focused on both the current workout and my overall fitness plan. Infighting shape's unique combination of weight and martial arts training leaves me completely drenched after each workout and looking forward to the next. I can't say enough about infighting shape and the coaches there! I haven't had this good of a workout since my days as a d1 college athlete and I'm loving it! You get an amazing workout each class, but you also learn to box from great coaches that pay as much attention to teaching you the right fundamentals as they do to getting your heart rate up The classes are small so you get plenty of attention and the coaches do an excellent job of tailoring the class to the skills of the people who show up on any given day. There is a reason this program keeps showing up on Living Social and Groupon ... My girlfriend and I wanted to try a boxing/fitness program together since we have a small gym in our apt building, so we signed up for the 10 class deal. Be sure to visit the infightingshape webpage and check out the schedule before you sign up, there are little to none classes. Maybe 1 a day and some of the classes are advanced classes which do not allow people just starting out. The wed night class, Combat Conditioning, wase was all weightlifting and conditioning, no boxing which was a dissapointment. Also the instructor did not seem to take into consideration that each person is a different, size, shape, and weight. I'm pretty active & fit, and he had me olympic pressing 3 times my body weight, I nearly through my back out. My girlfriend is tall, lanky, and he had her doing almost the same weight, and when her form was incorrect, he didnt help her, but instead used her as an example of how not to olympic lift more than your body weight. Pretty rude and irritaing. The class schedule was disorganized and the studio was tiny for all the people in there and there isnt enough equipment, so at one point I was swinging a 30 pound kettle ball, when I should of been swigning a 15 pound one. We all had to jump rope at one point, and could feel the person's jump rope next to me, whipping by my face. I ended up going to one more class, my girl was over it. I went to the sat afternoon boxing class, and although it was better than the total combat conditioning, the same instructor seemed disorganized & his boxing instruction was confusing. One girl in class actually said, "you are telling us do this, but you are showing us to do that, so which is it?" If the place had more room, or less people it would of been a little better. The instructor is probably good for people who have had boxing type of execrcise experience, but not for those who are just trying to get an alternative type of excercise in ... I didnt go back after my 2nd class even though I had 8 more that I had purchased. Womp womp. read more

So this is based on the livingsocial deal i bought (mine was 5 classes for $40 which seems like a good deal). The class itself is so disorganized and you barely learn anything. The room itself is small and since so many people bought the livingsocial and groupon deals, it gets so crowded in there. Plus, the class takes a while to start (around 7:15 after the coach brings out all the equipment and gets everyone signed in). 7 is already bit late for me after a long Monday workday but that's the only one i can get signed into since the online system is wack and won't accept my voucher #. Plus I can't register through the calender - it only shows Wednesday 7 AM class. So online registration is a PITA. Once the class begins, we have about a 15 minute warm up of push ups, jumping rope, wall sits, etc and being out of shape for while, it definitely can be brutal especially since the coach will make sure all of you are doing it correctly. After that, the class is divided into 2 - those that know how to actually box and those that are beginners. So with about 30ish people in a small class, you will barely learn since the coach gets carried away critiquing the advanced people (and he does love to critique by making sure the class knows you're doing it incorrectly - he'll stop the class just to point out what the person is doing wrong). So after my 4th class, I'm still in beginner because he hasn't taught me much beyond jabbing (and you'll keep practicing how to jab for about 20 minutes). He'll also pair you up with someone similar to your size in your group and you'll keep practicing with them. Finally, around 8:15 you'll start going into rounds. By that point your arms will be worn out. Why a 1 star? Coach is rude (curses to shut you up, stops class to critique a beginner, yells near your ear, and make sure your guard is up because if it isn't he'll slap you to make a point to keep it up). Class starts at 7 and ends 8:30. Online registration is messed up. You'll barely advance in learning anything beyond a jab. So unless you want to relive days of PE where you had a hard-ass gym teacher, save your money and time. read more
