He could have just said so, instead of treating me in such an unethical, inhumane and humiliating fashion at the most vulnerable time in my life. His assistant probably noticed and attempted to make up for his rude and unprofessional behavior, and that was very appreciated (she is a sweetheart.) His hygienists are amazing and I am so thankful for them. Do us all a favor and retire, Dr. Margeas! You ARE NOT God's gift to dentistry, as you think you are. Used up insurance benefits for them to tell me my teeth were in great condition, "but I needed a deep cleaning". The hygienist has a horrible tableside manner and is so brut and quick in his service that he's just poking and prodding around like there's no tomorrow. Can't even offer a cup of water apparently! Huge waste of time and I'll now have to pay out of pocket for an actual cleaning or wait six months.

We also had our toddler (2 years) go in for his first dentist visit and Dr. Baker was gentle and patient. They were thorough with their checks every time and treated us with care and intention. Anecdote/Example time: My partner has had many teeth degrade due to depression/fear of dentists, so much so that another dentist told her she'd lose all her teeth. However, when my partner was in incredible tooth pain, we went to Downtown Dental Care as it was recommended by One Iowa. We explained that she had dental anxiety, and when we arrived, everyone (from Joni at the front desk to Dr. Riley himself) was kind, understanding, and patient with my partner. No guilt or blame were given for the state of her teeth. There was only a focus on "get you better" and looking to the future-- no shame or chiding! Prodecures were explained to us step-by-step, all matter of fact without judgement. All tooth care has been presented with options and explanations of each option for us, like the cost physically vs financially for a root canal vs a tooth pulling. Not only have we been given options for treatment, but when Dr. Riley cannot do something himself (either due to his practice (like pulling teeth) or due to cost (root canal), he recommends the best place to go- a surgeon who also understands dental anxiety, or Iowa City Dentistry School for cost. One additional thing to add: My partner has Delta Dental, and the staff, hygienists, and Dr. Riley, have all helped her navigate her insurance and pointed out the next steps she needs to do when they cannot do something for her. I have anxiety disorder so they are able to use "gas" to keep me relaxed. My periodontal problems are gone and so are five cavities and now I see him three times a year with very little anxiety to keep my periodontal issues under control. He even worked me in the same day for an emergency. Delta Dental and all forms of Medicare and other insurers are accepted. If you don't have dental insurance no worries, they will write up a payment program. As long as Dr Thies is in business I will always go to him; I can't imagine going to a different dentist.

Seemed perfect. When the receptionist answered I could barely hear them and it sounded like they didn't know what they were supposed to say. New person maybe? So, I asked if there were any appointments I could schedule for the near future because I am looking for a new dentist and need to establish care. Another apprehensive response but this time it also sounded like I was being unreasonable, silly and presumptuous that they'd have availability. Then I wanted to make sure I heard properly and was disconnected. No formal goodbye or anything. I called back and this time just got a "hello" like they're answering their own personal phone. So I ask if it's Franklin Family Dentistry and they say yes and I suggest that they remove the accepting new patients verbiage from their site because that might be helpful to avoid people calling thinking they can get care established. The response was that they're not accepting new patients and I said I understood that, just offering some advice. Look, I don't know who's answering the phone these days, maybe they're new, maybe it was a bad morning, but it's not a good look and it isn't going to translate well to current patients nor new ones. My suggestion: Train reception and all staff within to respond with tact, positivity and compassion. Some professionalism in a healthcare setting. If they cannot, then maybe this isn't their jam. Have the website and socials reflect the current business goals and services. If you're not accepting new patients, none of your outlets should state you are until you are.
