We have trusted this veterinarian to help us say goodbye to three of our dogs. Our first two…read moreexperiences were compassionate, gentle, and handled with dignity. That is exactly why we chose to return when we recently had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize our 13-year-old dog. Unfortunately, this experience was completely different, and I am extremely disappointed with the way both we and our dog were treated during his final visit. After considering our dog's age, condition, and quality of life, we made the heartbreaking decision that it was time to let him go. This was not an impulsive decision. We had loved and cared for him for 13 years, knew him better than anyone, and made this decision out of love for him. Instead of receiving compassion and support during one of the most painful moments a pet owner can experience, we felt criticized and judged for our decision. A veterinarian has every right and responsibility to give a professional medical opinion. But there is also a compassionate and professional way to communicate with a grieving family who has just made an incredibly difficult end-of-life decision for a beloved pet. We did not feel that compassion during this visit. What happened during the euthanasia itself is what troubles me the most. Our dog was not given a sedative beforehand. We were not told that his euthanasia would be handled differently from the previous two euthanasias we had experienced with this veterinarian. The euthanasia medication was administered, and within seconds our dog was gone. We did not get those final peaceful moments with him. We did not get the opportunity to hold him while he became relaxed and sleepy, talk to him, love on him, and say our final goodbye before the medication that would end his life was administered. By the time we realized how quickly everything was happening, he was gone. There is no way to get those moments back. That is unacceptable to me. If the procedure was going to be different from our previous experiences, that should have been clearly explained to us beforehand. We should have been told there would be no sedation and given the opportunity to ask questions. Most importantly, we should have been given the opportunity to take whatever time we needed with our dog before the final medication was administered. We specifically chose to bring our dog here for his final moments because of the compassion and dignity this veterinarian had shown our other two dogs when they were euthanized. We trusted that our third dog would receive that same level of care. That trust is what makes this experience so difficult to accept. I am sharing this because other pet owners deserve to know about our experience. If you are ever facing euthanasia here, I strongly encourage you to ask exactly how the procedure will be performed, whether your pet will be sedated beforehand, and when you need to say your final goodbye. I stand completely behind the decision we made for our 13-year-old dog. What I do not accept is the way his final moments were handled. We had one opportunity to give him the peaceful goodbye he deserved. We didn't get it. And we can never get those moments back.
